So...whats for dinner?

eric - Rome, NY, kind of between Syracuse and Utica

Sharon grew up in the Syracuse area...

Crazy lake effect snow in that area - blue sky and snowing! I loved living there in spite of the winter weather - some of the best times of my life, and both of my children were born there. My DD likes to answer the "where were you born" question by saying Rome, watching the reaction and then pausing, and adding New York after a few seconds. She is her father's daughter.

Boy, I hope these snow events for you guys stop soon. Enough already!
The hand doc appt went pretty well. She said I'm about where I should be. Based on her exam of my thumb and the amount of feeling I have, she thinks I should have more noticeable improvement in the next six weeks. She's been right about everything else so far, so I'm going with it. The doc also gave me some exercises for the arthritis in the hands which have actually helped already. I can get back to my resistance training too. So all in all, its good.
Today is potato leek soup. I've also started some baguettes which I'll finish tomorrow.

Joyce -- good to hear from you but I'm so sorry about all of your family issues. That's very tough.

Do any of you creative cooks here have an idea about what to do with leftover popovers? They are seasoned only with salt and not much of that. It seems a shame to just throw them away. I thought about drying them and making breadcrumbs. Any other ideas?

joyce - I wanted to echo the sentiments above - you have had a tough time recently and I am so sorry about your recent loss. Glad you can enjoy some sun and enjoyable times here in FL.
auntie - what about cubing the popovers and tossing them with olive oil and garlic, S&P and sautéing or baking them for croutons? Is the texture ok for that? Or cubing and drying and combining with sautéed onion, celery, sage and some cooked and crumbled sausage and chicken stock for a baked dressing?

I tried to take a panoramic picture of the grill area with the 9 foot snow bank and the neatly shoveled area, but it turned into a movie. Let's see if this will post. Nope... get a javascript error which should tell me that .mov are not allowed. So I will post a pathetic picture, well maybe two. [and after the javascript error, I am logged out of breastcancer.org. I smell a bug!]
So, I need to learn how to use this camera on the iPhone!

Joyce, it's great to have you pop in. Sorry for the sad events in your life. Give Michelle's dh a hug from all of us and tell him we miss her wonderful spirit.
Nance, good news about the hand's progress. You certainly went back to using it very soon after the surgery. WHY are there leftover popovers? That's the question on my mind. LOL. I've had them once that I can remember, at a supper club in MN. They were delicious, actually the only really good thing about the meal.
I took out a container of chili from the freezer for dh's dinner. I had a heavy lunch following the golf event. It wasn't really good, just heavy. A catered buffet with three meats and multiple carb dishes. I avoided the latter and then proceeded to eat a small dish of bread pudding that was delicious. AND thee cookies, on the largish side. So much for will power. I fear I'm falling into the pattern of older people liking sweets.
Eric, how is your mom?
Bedo, what is the soup of the day?
The cortisone shot in the foot did not cure the burning and pain. I was limping toward the end of the round of golf. I guess I should start a search for an orthopedic foot dr., as someone (Minus?) suggested. I'll be seeing my PCP soon and I'll see what she thinks.

They are piling snow in dump trucks and dumping it in the ocean, as there is no where else to put it.
Yes I loved the Velveteen Rabbit. My daughter has Baba who she picked out on her first birthday by pointing to him and saying Baba, of course. Baba has been to Europe, as a special exchange student and to South America. Baba has lived in Chicago, Auburn Ala, Ga, RI and now resides happily in MA. Baba goes everywhere with my daughter when she goes on trips or moves. He has no eyes. Our dog insisted on removing them no matter how many times they were superglued back in place. Baba is a stuffed bear, but one who stands on all fours.
Goats, this will be a 4 day a week job, but I am volunteering in Appalachia for 10 days in March to keep my sanity
Joyce, it is so good to hear from you but I am sorry to hear about your parents. You have been a good friend.
Oh Veruka, I hope that you and your family stay warm. I say Pizza Delivery and Mini-Maids! Yay! Who wants to rent a movie!?!
I am sorry for those I missed, I have to get up early for work.

Hi Joyce.....so good to see your posts, although I am sorry for the sad news about your parents. You have been so devoted to their care. Am glad your family can help a bit now.
Please give R. our best tiday! And yes, we all miss Michelle so much! She was a great cook, wasn't she! I'm sure you will come up with a great meal for tonight. Enjoy the golfers!
You are lucky that the light snow has blown off your roof in NH. Ours is just a giant growing mound on all the roofs. DH tried to get some of it off our low pitched family room roof yesterday morning and promptly fell off the ladder landing on his hip.
He is having surgery on it today, so I need to get into town to see what's happening. He is being pre-empted by lots of trauma cases so far. Not surprising given our wild weather conditions! He probably could have had his surgery done by now here in our local hospital branch, but DS1 got involved (long distance) and had DH transferred to the main hospital campus last evening. So we'll see....meanwhile I am very thankful that we are only getting a wee bit of snow today....
Will update later... Dinner late last night was half a smoothie, cheese/crackers and chocolate chip cookies. Oh dear!
Susan, I will probably be at BIDMC tomorrow....unless they cut him loose immediately, so let me know where you will be, and maybe we can connect. He is over at Pilgrim Rd building.

It.Is.Snowing.Today..... They.promised.Sunshine.... They.lied... Had.Enough.
Apartment in Seville has fallen through so I am scrambling to find another one. Barcelona is all booked. Tired of looking at apartment photos that try to mislead. Just be honest and we will all be happy, for goodness sake.
Dinner last night was the baked pasta dish I froze recently, plus some garlic bread and a salad. Mr. 02143 spent at least 4.5 hrs cleaning snow yesterday, I knew that his body would need some carbs. I am a bit worried by how much his body is rebelling from this constant tossing of snow over 8' snowbanks. But he refuses help from the kids, and is a bit stubborn.
Lacey, will send you my BIDMC details by PM. Maybe I can bring you a purchased sandwich?
Joyce, I join the chorus of condolences. What a hard time of it you have had. So happy to hear that Rick will be visiting you. I am sure that whatever food you serve after 18 holes of golf will be appreciated. Can't imagine he doesn't just love being with the two of you.
Leftover popovers... all I can come up with is a savory bread pudding, or a sweet one [but that is never what I would do], or opening them up and stuffing them before throwing them back in the oven to re-bake. Served with a sauce? Sometimes leftover bread is just good cut into strips and lightly sautéed in butter with some cinnamon sugar. Oh..... how about croutons for a salad, tossed in some oil and herbs/garlic and then toasted in a fry pan?
Back to apartment reviews.

Oh no Lacey, so sorry about your dh! Aggghhhhh! Hate winter!! We are back to the deep freeze of single digits the next few days. Ugh!
Thanks for all the great ideas. I did think about throwing the popovers in the freezer and using them for a dressing but I think I'll make the bread pudding. That will make dh very happy. Carole, I don't know why there were leftovers. I did my part lol!
My fresh pork shanks will be ready this morning. Not sure if they'll be ready in enough time to fix them for dinner.
Dh is fixing me a waffle for a late breakfast then I'm off to start the baguettes.

joyce - I will be in your neck of the woods this weekend - we are going to the Miami Boat Show to see DD (she is working a trolling motor booth) and then checking on the condo of our friend for whom my DH is the executor - in Boynton Beach. I will blow you a kiss from there! Have fun with the golfers and I am sure they will think anything you make is delicious!
lacey - eeeks for your DH! I am so sorry that he had an accident, but surely hoping that the fix goes well. Hope you and susan can meet up, just sorry for the circumstances and both of you be careful!!!
carole - so sorry about the foot, it is miserable when feet or backs hurt - you need them to do everything. Hoping you can get some relief as I know you like to be active.
auntie - yay for hand improvement, progress has to be encouraging. The bread pudding idea for the popovers is a great one - susan is a genious.
veruka - you are so busy! Wish I could help!
bedo - loved the Baba story - my son had a stuffed pig named Otto - went everywhere. I was so worried about him losing it I had a back up Otto in storage - wouldn't have been the same but man, he loved that little pig. Still have both, lol! When my cousin and his fiancée got married in Austria in the summer of '13 they had each had their small stuffed animal at the wedding.

Yup Special. We have 2 stuffed bears nearly identical purchased about 6 months apart. "Griz" named because we had "Jeremiah Johnson" on during DD's 1st birthday party and he was christened that.
Lacey - I'm so, so sorry to hear about your DH's accident. Hope surgery is a success and his recovery is without incident. What do we need to do to get the snow to let up? I think the plains and TX included is getting a very cold spell middle of next week. That might take some of the "snow heat" off of NE.
Had brats and french fries last night with repeat tonight. I have to face digging deep into the freezer to see what's in there. Also need to make blueberry muffins with the blueberries I bought umm last week.

Oh Red! Now your father will be TRULY irritated with you. Do what you can to let us know how you are doing. Lot of this falling going around. Take care of yourself.
Found a container of Thanksgiving Turkey stock!!!! Pasta e Fagioli tonight for supper. Yum. I even have a bag of soup pasta in the freezer so I don't have to make any pasta tonight.

Oh Lacey - so sorry about your DH. Hope the 'arrangements' have been completed by now & surgery scheduled at least. I hate it that you are driving back & forth.
And Redhead. Good heavens - I hope it's not your dominant hand. Here's to excellent surgery & good pain meds & quick healing.
Can't decide on today's lunch/dinner (is that linner or dunch?) Maybe grilled cheese w/pumpernickel & Havarti? Need a salad but not in the mood.

Oh Red. I'm so sorry about the fall. Hope you have some good friends to help out. Wish I was near you so I could.
0 -
red - oh no! I hope you can get the wrist dealt with while having a minimum of pain and inconvenience, so sorry!
joyce - we will - and it will be good to see DD, we always have fun with her - she is such a nut. She will work her booth from 10 am - 7 pm, so we will see her for breakfast and dinner, but will also check out the boat show for a bit. My DH is a Miami native so we enjoy spending time there, and I like that he drives and knows where he is going, so we aren't consulting a map, etc. We have basically no agenda other than relaxing, strolling, stopping here and there. I think the weather will be pleasant, and we usually just park the car for the day and go everywhere on foot. We will drive north and stop in Boynton Beach on the way home to check out the condo and do a quick vacuum and dust if need be.

Lacey, I'm sorry to learn of your dh's fall. And yours, too, Redheaded. Hoping for good outcomes and minimum pain and inconvenience. I know there has already been too much of both pain and inconvenience. Be careful, Lacey.
I played 18 holes today in beautiful weather and my foot didn't bother me much at all. I took out the purchased insoles that set me back $40, put the New Balance insoles back in and a cheaper foam insole purchased at the podiatrist's office. That combination was more comfortable. I have stopped wearing golf shoes and stick with the athletic shoes
Dinner tonight will be some of my home-made pasta made a few weeks ago with all the egg yolks.. I'll take some out of the freezer, probably some of the extruded noodles, and make use of the bought Rao puttanesca sauce. A side will be green beans also out of the freezer. Very easy and a meat-free dinner. I find I am enjoying meat less these days.
Lacey and Susan, how nice that you might connect, even though the reason for the opportunity is unfortunate.
SpecialK, your trip to Miami with your dh sounds very relaxing and fun.
Luv, don't send us any freezing weather! I think our spring is right around the corner. The swamp maple trees are aflame with their bright red leaves and the other trees are full of buds just waiting to pop open.
Hi to Eric and everyone else not mentioned. Moon hasn't been vocal in a while. I guess Bedo is watching her vacuum cleaner.

Red, oh no! Ouch!! Heal fast!
Tonight is the last of the pork butt with a bit of bbq sauce on a fresh baguette. Also made some potato salad with champagne vinaigrette using the leftover potatoes from Saturday's dinner. I'm beginning to be able to see the back of the refrigerator.
The pork shanks were kind of a bust. They were untrimmed (didn't think to request it, duh) and obviously from a young pig so two are not nearly enough to do much of anything with. I guess I'll order some more and have them trimmed this time. I did see that they had some really beautiful short ribs that I think I'll go back and get.
Baguette anyone?

oh Lacey! Wishing your DH a quick recovery. Wish I knew of someplace that could deliver you a decent kale sautee. I hear the roads in Boston are slick so please take care!
Red- owowow! Hope the pain meds kick in!
Thanks Bedo for the warm thoughts - movie night and pizza sound great. If only I could get DD to watch anything without princesses...she throws a football with her dad in her princess dress and when the movie comes on, puts it in her lap, covers it with a blanket and plays baby with it 😳
Special k- thank you. Knowing you guys are here is a great help. Just keep telling us about the lovely sunshine and golfing weather! That goes for you too Carole and Joyce!
Susan- any progress on the Barcelona apt? Btw, my DD and DS went bananas for the carpet picnic! We tried it at afternoon snack...ok, to tell the truth they threw themselves down on the floor in a snit first, but the snacks and tablecloth on the floor cheered them (and me) up immensely!
Dinner tonight was a chicken tortilla soup. And a kale salad.

veruka - chicken tortilla soup tonight at my house as well! Great minds, right?

OMG....those baguettes!!! Nance, that's what I want mine to look like! But they don't.
I have no idea why I am stil up other than the fact that .i just ate diviner an hour ago, scarfing (is that the word?) down a salmon meal from our favorite Greek diner that ?I passed on the way home tonight. At first I went to the grovcery store, but by the time I was back at the car, ?I realized I was too tired to cook, so stopped at Farm Grill and got one of my favorite meals. Yum! But I feel too fun to go to bed yet...tho I'm dead tired.
Got up early to be ready for "the call" about DH's scheduled surgery. As it turned out, he didn't go in until 10:30, and was scheduled to be back in his room by 2:00. Well, it took me almost three hours to get to the hospital...no problems with skidding out when you are going 1.5 miles per hour which I did for the last 1.5 miles. Really annoying! Then there was not a single spot available in the parking garage...so,I sat and waited even longer until someone's shift ended and got their spot. Fortunately DH was surrounded by a bevy of adorable, competent, young nurses, so I did not feel badly for being late at all.
Bottom line, the surgery went very well, and DS2 shared that he was happy with the pix from the doc's follow up report to him. DH has already started walking and meets up with the PT in the morning. He was enjoying his morphine pump tonight, but will not have it tomorrow, so he may not be so "happy". Oh, to give you an insiders view of the storm...DH's floor nurse was a young gal who put herself up in a hotel for the past four days so that she could get to work in the stormy weather. She was so excited to go home tonight for her three days off...and was attentive and competent up to her 7PM departure. Have to say I was really impressed with the professionalism and caring of all the nursing staff we met there...most all had to sleep at the hospital during this crazy week.
The downside of this visit.....DH has a roommate who is rather scary....seems to have delusions, cognitive problems, and seizure disorder, so is not supposed to stand by himself...and keeps getting up, being demanding, and tries to leave. So there are shrieking alarms going off to alert staff....constantly! At least when he sleeps (meds induced, I would say) he is not trying to bolt, but his snoring is so severe, I could hardly stand being in the room. Now all that said, DH seemed very tolerant of all of this today....but we'll see what happens when he is relieved of his morphine! He did say that the man seemed more coherent last night...so he wonders if the meds he has are leaving him in this confused agitated state.
Tonight DS2 made a two hour trip across town (no car...it is still in a snowbank in Southie) by any public transportation he could find, and finally a cab, to visit dear ol dad before heading back across town to the Celtics game. I am happy for him that it was a great game!
So I am exhausted and DH and I decided that it does not make sense for me to head into town again tomorrow to sit in his too small double room while he is in PT or sleeping. And I should be home for the roofer guys who are supposed to come to finish shoveling off the roof before the next storm. DH decide we could easily visit over FaceTime...not a bad idea at all. Except that, sadly, I will not be able to meet up with Susan...a missed opportunity I regret...and I can't even recall if I told you that on Facebook, Susan. I will check before heading to bed., and communicate this more appropriately.
Sorry to be so focused on this one topic!
And Red, so sorry about your hand. Wish I could send DS1 out to fix it up. Hope you can get it tended to right away.

Joyce, the golfers could have brought you some ribs. They probably thought they were saving you the trouble of cooking dinner. At any rate you were spared the replays of the good shots! LOL!
Lacey, so glad the surgery went to Surgeon Son's satisfaction. What a trial getting to the hospital! A wise decision to stay home today and keep in touch. Keep us updated.
The Rao sauce (name???) with the olives and capers was delicious. Puttanesca!!! Brain kicked in. I can't imagine that I could make a similar sauce any better, though maybe I could save a few $. The light wheat home-made big macaroni were a little thick in the walls but the smaller twisted noodles cooked up better. The small frozen green beans steamed in bouillon chicken broth with diced up leftover ham from Sunday sprinkled with s & p & onion powder were very good. Grated romano on the pasta. I enjoyed the meal very much and could have eaten seconds. A WW tip. We eat on luncheon plates instead of dinner plates. DH can get a lot on luncheon plate plus he loves seconds so it works out for both of us.
This morning the scale was kind! Yay! Yes, the weekend is coming. DH is down on the scale, too. He has actually been making himself a half sandwich for lunch instead of a whole lately but he loves his Cape Cod chips.
Dinner tonight will probably be stuffed peppers. Will fit with the goal of using up freezer foods.

DH and I had a good laugh last night when we were watching a recorded police drama with a detective named Laura. She cooked dinner for her dad who forked a bite of spaghetti in red sauce and asked, "Why is this spaghetti brown?" She replied, "Because it's wheat." Her dad exclaimed in disgust, "Who would do that to spaghetti!"
0 -
Pat, Take care of yourself as well.... lots of good thoughts headed both towards you and Bob. Meeting at a hospital isn't exactly an "opportunity" so don't worry about that.
Carole, glad to hear that Rao's Puttanesca is good. Sadly, Mr 02143 would never go for it. And love the whole wheat pasta comment!
Need to shower and head towards treatment.
