Does anyone use a FitBit or other personal tracker device? I am trying to decide if getting one is really worth the money. I can track my activity and food intake via other programs online or on my phone, just wondering if an activity tracker offers that much more real benefits or are they just fad toys?

Rhody: I don't have a FitBit but others here do and they really love it.

Hi All. Today is my 32nd wedding anniversary! HeartDh and I decided to go to the mountains on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We hiked 8 miles. 3 1/2 up a mountain, 3 1/2 down the mountain and 1 mile around a lake. It was in the low 60s so not too sweaty!

Congratulations Wonderland! Sounds like a great way to celebrate!

Rhoddy, I got a Fitbit Charge in March. I really like it. I don't do much of the online stuff but love to track my steps, miles, calories, etc. Days when I'm active it is fun to see how many steps I've racked up, and it has made me more active on 'down' days too because I like the 'buzz' that goes off when I reach 10,000 steps.

Congrat's and Happy Anniversary, Wonderland. What a way to celebrate!

Rhoddy, ditto to what Ruth says. I love my fitbit. It helps me to "get up and get moving" if I haven't "racked up" enough steps. It really helps me since I am "fresh out" of chemo and radiation and still get zonked with fatigue.

I am still "adjusting" to going back to work (2nd week and I am just exhausted when I get home). I realized today it may be a minute before I am e able to get the formal exercise back on the plate. The one "silver lining" is I walk as much as possible at work along with my walk. I am on track for 8K+ steps today. I am happy that I am still on this thread and being encouraged to "keep" going!

We are glad you are here too, ladyb.....and yes, indeed, I can use my school-marm voice when necessary! Speaking of which, I am out the door to sub in a few minutes & then off to the last home high school baseball game, so I don't know if I will get any formal exercise in or not today....we shall see. Have a great Friday, All!

Wonderland, congrats to you and DH!  32 years is big cause for celebration.

Claire, your weekend plans sound thrilling!  My aunt loves to travel around the country to biking and running events and she is always trying to talk me into going.  I am going to tell her about the Cowiche Crawl for next year.  Running, wine, and French food = Heaven!  I'm in!  The crazy thing is she was looking for somewhere we could go this month and we couldn't come up with anything fun.  This would have been perfect.  Bummer!

Exercise yesterday was 2.5-mile brisk walk with Cali in her stroller and a 35-minute cardio workout on my Wii Active.  Today started out rainy and ugly but the sun just came out.  Yay!  Hoping to get on my bike after work.

    TGIF!

PS:  My Fitbit Charge HR is supposed to be delivered today or tomorrow Happy

Rhody- I used a Garmin Vivofit and really like it. I take the info from it along with other exercise from biking to walking to yoga and swimming and log it in Map My Walk. You get a little "red line" when you have been sitting too long, which encourages you to get up and move (especially if you have a desk job).

Hi Everyone! Had a nice sweaty walk/run this evening. It's cooled down now and feels great.

Here is a picture from yesterday when dh and hiked in the mountains. We only stopped once during our 8 mile hike and this is when the picture was taken.

I am the proud owner of FOUR new tires!!! I am thrilled because tires were on my list for this year, and an unfixable problem meant that I got my bad tire, still under warranty, replaced for FREE!!! And the others prorated because not safe to do just one. So about one third off the cost of good new tires. The guy taking care of me was good looking, so an added bonus.

I am greatly relieved to have this behind me. Plus, I didn't get stranded anywhere with a flat. Oops....that describes part of my winter cycling.

Looking forward to tomorrow and the weekend. This should be a blast and a fun gathering of people. The Cowiche Canyon is just gorgeous, and Naches Heights is quite spiritual (different meaning from the "spirits" produced there). A truly magical place in the world.

Plus, I cycle the Yakima Canyon on Sunday, so a double-header.

Just a walk tonight. I was planning a short bicycle ride, but didn't work out. Other weekday exercises to keep it all in check.

My guy is envious as is working on his new house prior to moving in.

I am thinking a relatively early evening. So thrilled I am able to do all these great fun things. - Claire

Reporting in a few days worth. Wednesday, 60 minutes mowing the lawn and walking the dog, Thursday 15 minute walk, Friday 27 minute walk.  Today (since I mowed the lawn Wed), I got a chance to walk around the lake and was surprised to see so many pretty wildflowers.  I tried to post a picture but it wouldn't post so maybe I'll try again later.  It's not nearly as pretty as Heidi's view.  How picturesque. But I digress.  Exercise today: 50 minutes around the lake, 20 minute dog walk, 30 minutes weeding and 15 minute bike ride to get a salad.  Since y'all gave Ruth permission to have two pieces of cake I decided to have a piece of pound cake with blueberries and strawberries, and a dollop of whipped cream.

I am glad the California girls are seeing some rain.

Congratulations Wonderland on your 32nd anniversary!  Lovely picture of you and the mountains.   Claire we'll look forward to some pictures of your rides.

P.S. Rhody I have never used a fitbit either.  I use Argus on my phone.  It tracks steps and the exercise you do and you can take pictures of your meals if you like.  It does help motivate me, so whichever method you choose, I do think it helps.  I will also walk around an extra five minutes to hit a certain amount of time, or if I'm 100 steps from my goal, I have actually walked around my house before I went to bed to get that alert that I reached my steps!

If you get a fitbit; first charge it up because you can't go through the rest of the steps until it is charged.

A 50 minute yoga DVD & 45 minute walk today. Playing catchup from my too-busy week!

hi all and welcome Sweet Thing.  Been working crazy long hours but managed to log three hours of exercise this past week.  Walked to farmers market this morning before it rained.  No complaints!  Poppies and iris are ready to bloom.

Ruth, fab pic of you & your mom laughing.  So sorry about your friend.  ((hugs))

HeidiHill, what pretty Spring countryside for a ride.  Love when it greens up.

Wonderland, great mountaintop pic of you.  Happy Anniversary to you & yr DH.

hi ladies. Well I had bmx in jan 2014, hysterectomy July 2014 and now I have a diagnosis of osteopenia of the spine (-2). What is a good amount of exercise specifically walking but I'm open to other ideas to do daily/weekly? I'm 5'2 and weigh about 195. I know, I let myself go but I'm trying to reclaim myself and get healthy! I use my cell phone to tell me how many steps I walked and how many miles just not sure what kind of goal I should set. Would like it to be realistic, but also one that will show results!

Welcome mommy! Years ago I heard Richard Simmons say that you should get 4 hours of aerobics (walking, running, swimming, biking, dancing....whatever gets you moving....it doesn't hard to be 'hard') and 3 hours of toning (weights, yoga, pilates, ab work etc. etc. etc.) a week. And that is what I've stuck to very religiously for a long time. For bone health, walking is good because it pounds your bones, and lifting light weights are good for the bones too. Here is a thing that actually BUILDS bone density: eat a serving of dried plums (prunes) every day!!!!

As far as steps go, one is supposed to work up to 10,000 steps a day. loseit.com is a great place to record food/exercise etc. If you use it religiously, you WILL lose weight (plus it is free).

I am relieved to hear CA got some rain. I hope more is on the way.

    Wonderland, Congrats on 32 years!

Hill walking today--45 minutes--plus some theraband toning. Might have over done that a bit as my underarm is sore on the mx side.

You gotta start where you are and go from there! Smile

If you are teaching, you are getting lots of steps during your regular school day. I subbed Friday and had 9,000 steps before I left the building!!!!

Welcome Mommyathome, I concur with Ruth I'll bet you're getting plenty of steps at school and running after your kids but you need to add weight training, personally I love to dance and I did neglect the weights but I've added them back in doing Body Pump classes.

Today did Body Combat class followed by Body Flow, thought of you LB we did BF68, I love the tai chi part.

Mommyathome, welcome.  They recommend 150 minutes of exercise per week for cancer patients, but they found those who did more had even better prevention of recurrence. My doctor now recommends 45 minutes a day.  I always try to get my 150 per week in at the minimum and then any time I can do more, I do.

Weight training, a little running or even jumping jacks or jumping up and down are good for building bone.

As for losing weight, the only thing I've had success with is reducing sugar and carbs.

30 minutes on the treadmill & an hour of target toning with Denise Austin. We are having horrible weather; it started pouring down sheets of rain last night & has continued all day long (our backyard looks like a lake), now the wind is blowing like crazy, freeze warnings are out & it is supposed to turn into SNOW overnight!!!! Shocked
