So...whats for dinner?

A couple of amusing (wry) 'elder stories' for Red. My dad continued to climb a ladder to the top of their 3 story house to clean the gutters into his late 80s. The last time I caught him, I told him if he fell I would make SURE that he and Mother were shipped to separate nursing homes & never saw each other again. I know I sounded like a bully, but that worked. Also in his late 80s, we had a rule that he could only drive to the grocery store or to Walgreens - both a short distance over quiet streets that he'd been driving for 60 years. Even so, he made a wrong turn one day & got lost. I was already getting on a plane when he finally stopped at a random house and ask them to call his neighbors. When the police came the next day, the large, burly cop in uniform said I'd have to take away his driver's license. Right, like I'm only a 'girl' to my Dad for heaven's sake, so I just laughed. I told the officer he had a badge & a gun & handcuffs & the law, so he needed to be the one to take my Dad's license. And Dad never stopped filling out papers to get it back, which the doc of course wouldn't sign.
Luv - looks like we're in the same boat except I have an only son who will have to "handle" me. He helped my Dad when he could. But we too live in different states & he watched me try to clean out my folk's house in a different state. We've already talked about hiring someone to hold an estate sale after I go, even though I have a very small place & most of my 'estate' is books. And he knows why I have a DNR in place after watching my Mom fade away, and we are in agreement. Who knows what happens between then & now.
Sorry for rambling on and for hijacking the thread. Thinking of all of you who are still engaged in struggles & joys w/elderly parents. Time to decide what's for dinner.

Are you kidding, Minus??!! Rich family stories from which we can all learn as well as relate on greater or lesser levels. Thank you for sharing....
I have to go through a mass of photos to figure out what few to post.....and DH awaits my company for watching a movie.
Ate at a local greek pizza place...I had spinach pie and greek salad, really mediocre.

My neighborhood domino ladies all went to a little Italian restaurant that's been there since the 50's. In Houston, that's a very long time, since we tear down things that might become 'historic'. I had a side salad, which was enough for my entire meal by the time I ate two pieces of garlic bread, and I'd ordered a "spaghetti works" - meat sauce, meat balls & mushrooms w/cheese melted on top. Brought that home so now I have dinner for the next couple of nights. True comfort food. Others had what was reported to be a wonderful lasagna, a shrimp/avocado salad w/a ton of big shrimp, and a BLT w/avocado that was truly almost 5" tall
Lacey - the spinach pie sounds good. Maybe I'll make a spinach quiche this weekend when my son is here. He usually wants to go out, but I can have the ingredients on hand in case.

meatballs, spinach pie- making me hungry! Somehow I forgot to add this wonderful thread to my favorites, and chemo brain- well you get it!!
I've added it and look forward to reading about everyone's dinners. Tonight the kids have requested pizza- was going to order in because of sports schedules, but maybe I'll buy dough and make it!
What are you guys making?

The ribeye was delicious. The only side was tiny boiled potatoes which we smashed open and dressed up like baked potatoes with butter and sour cream.
For tonight I have fresh Northern fillets in the refrigerator, brought over to me by the nice man who has been renting the old cabin here at the resort. He seems to have a huge extended family, who have been coming and going and fishing with success.
It's in the high 40's outside this morning. This has been very atypical August weather the last week even for northern MN. I'm wearing warm pants and a sweatshirt! It's supposed to warm up into the 70's. Be careful what you wish for!

carole - send me some of that cool weather! We have humidity you can cut with a knife and in the 90's - I know you know!
tinkerbells - welcome!
Last night we had some of the leftover pasta with marinara and peppers, and a salad of iceberg with the bean salad over the top and some of the sweet and sour dressing that the bean salad is marinated in. Both of these are down to the last serving, which I think DD will eat. Tonight I may make pasta again - I have some prosciutto to use up so I think I will make a white wine/cream sauce with the prosciutto sliced up, some peas and possibly artichoke hearts that are currently frozen. Quick and easy.

Welcome to our new and infrequent posters. Always fun to see new names, meals, experiences! I did send a message to Laurie about our latest milestone. She was so happy to hear that we are going strong as she was getting her little guys prepped for their first day back to school.
Red, never worry about rant posts of that variety....always understood.
Special, I am so sorry to learn that you may be facing more derm surgery. Ugh! You are such a trooper...
Okay, I finally went through my photo stream to make a little photo story of our "August birthdays" weekend.
Here it is....a very long account, except for DH's birthday dinner since I forgot my phone while rushing. Will post ONE photo of that later....
First arrivals have breakfast before heading to beach
Papa and DGD ready to head to beach...
DGD loved riding in this with her dad...her first experience tubing...she has her dad's attitude about fast moving action, loved it!
The grands using unusual restraint waiting for candle to be lit for DGD's "final" celebration for her 3rd birthday. Previously, she was climbing all over the kitchen to try to get to the cupcakes...a determined lass!
Checking out the princesses. Loved the blanket!
and the birthday tutu with pom poms in the hem...and the little balloon blowing kit. And carefully threw out any broken balloons so DGF's pooch would not ingest them!
On a rainy day we went to a movie then to local gift shop, Twin Designs, to meet Diane, the 46 year old turtle and select birthday gift from uncle. Here, DS2 and DGF walk the 3year old birthday celebrator to gift store. Below, we meet Diane... DGD selected an adorable stuffed turtle for her gift and promptly named it "Fluffy", coincidentally the name of my first duck!
DGS had a sleepover with us (their family stayed in a home down the street, which was actually wonderful in terms of cutting down on the chaos for a few hours each day)and was thrilled that DGF's pooch decided to join him on a flip out chair/bed DGS chose over the bunkbed.
Nice long scooter ride to get some energy out!
The kids loved the long quiet road since they live in a very hilly neighborhood.
We had a gorgeous day for swimming off the boat (here with DS2 and friends) in the middle of the lake...so much fun! And the water was warm.
Some science experiments, here getting rice and raisins to dance! Also turned gummy worms into electric eels! Fun! Notice that the pom pom tutu is being worn yet again. I think her teachers will be seeing that frequently!
The doc vegans and omnivore offspring. At this point, they limit sugar (high fructose corn syrup products) and chemicals but certainly feed the kids all kinds of protein along with their fruits and veggies. DGS indicates he is a vegetarian who likes bacon...ha! One unwelcome wrinkle with the kids was a reeruption of blisters from the HFM virus they both contracted a few months ago. We adults are keeping our fingers crossed that none of us get it....yuk!
Nana and DGD in our party dresses for PaPa's birthday dinner.
As we relaxed on the beach late in the afternoon after the kids, grands and pooch left, there was a rainstorm across the lake. We were happily treated to inexplicably dry skies and then several rainbows, this being one of the most beautiful. A great way to end our fun family weekend!0 -
lacey - thanks for your derm surgery sympathies - I have just come to accept it. At first I lamented over all of the scarring, but now I just don't care anymore. Probably will be more upset if I have any occur on my face - so far, so good. One of these new issues is a recurrence from a site that was hurriedly done by electrodessication right before chemo. I don't like the way it scarred so the upside is that since this will now most likely need a MOHS the scar will be a thin line rather than a crater. I love all of the pics with explanations - feel like I am right there with you! Looks like fun! It will be a while before I have and grands to enjoy - neither of my children is even dating anyone - they are 26 and 27 - they need to get a move on, lol!

Hello all! I know I've been among the missing too but I've been keeping up with posts. Nothing much exciting in the way of cooking here (at least I can't remember anything) other than lasagna on Sunday with homemade noodles, ricotta and sauce. The homemade ricotta has made a lasagna fan of me -- never was before. It truly makes all the difference.
Tonight is sauteed beef tenderloin strips with peppers and onions and soba noodles. Or maybe regular noodles. I don't know. Nothing really appeals but that's what I thawed. Will probably finish up the last of the picked tomatoes just sliced with some olive oil and fresh basil.
Count me among those with aging parent problems. My poor dad, who turns 89 on Monday, can barely walk and is having to face no longer being able to drive. I just don't know what to do for him. I've tried everything I know to do to get him some relief. When I spoke to him on the phone yesterday he just complained the whole time, which is very unlike him. We're going to see him on Monday so I'll be able to get a better line on what's going on. I think what he fears most is losing his freedom. He likes to go places, even if it's just grocery shopping or out to eat (which it primarily is). If he can't do that easily, he'll be very depressed. He too, can be very stubborn about solutions though.
SK -- enough with the skin cancer! You've had way more than your share!
Lacey -- love the pics. And the tutu! What a great Nana you are!
Susan - hope you get good news on the condo front.
It has been absolute gorgeous here -- 70's, sunny, no humidity. Certainly unlike August in Missouri! Today we swam for the first time at our gym. I really didn't do that many laps, but boy did it make me tired! Soooo out of shape . . . .
It's that time of year for The Tests. Passed the mammogram last week (yay - can breathe for another year) and tomorrow is blood work. Can't wait to see what nasty little surprises that holds. Ugh.

Love the pics, Lacey
To those who have been caring for their parents, my heart goes out to you. It is so heartbreaking to see our parents decline, whatever age you are, and to lose someone you so depended on, and to adjust to a different way of living and relating to them.. My Dad died when I was 5 and I was my Mom's power of attorney and co-executrix at 26 after caring for her for a year and 1/2 before she died. I think that it must be the same no matter what age you are. I still think of her every day, and try to live by what she taught me. I hold her memories close to my heart. Her love for me still gives me strength and happiness.
I am sorry that I have not been online, I was on vacation and then still on vacation in my mind and have not caught up, but I think of each of you every day.
Trying to decide what to do next with my life.
For dinner last night Squiiiidddd! Sauteed with oil pepper and sea salt (and hot peppers as Susan suggested} I rinse it off for her. My kitty and I are both addicted
Tonight, Wahoo fish! With Vermont Seaweed salad.

Oh my! Mr. Condo is now willing to consider other offers from us. Is anyone surprised that this is the day after the market crashes and the green line [subway] extension is up for grabs? Sadly, there is no family consensus on the new offer, so have bought us a few days telling the agent that we need some time. And the clock turns. :-)

Oh Susan, decisions, decisions!

But I did make some tomato jam with all those cherry tomatoes. Will taste tomorrow when it is cooler. And then.... figure out what it will compliment.

Ah yes, Susan, timing is everything! I hope that the condo works out for you unless it just feels too sour now. I would suspect that some other asking price adjustments might open other options for you, too. Tomato jam sounds tasty!
Tonight we had teriyaki marinated chicken thighs and veggies, local corn, and a cuke and local tomato salad with evoo, white balsamic and basil chiffonade. Also tried a small loaf of honey molasses bread that was from the same farm as the corn. It was nice.Okay....last pix from the birthday weekend....or at least until DS1 sends his really good ones. He is a pretty serious photographer in his "spare" time. These are from DH's old iphone:

Such a beautiful evening we had overlooking the lake and mountains. Here DS2 and DGF amuse the grands before their meals show up. I was so thankful for their help. The cake was for both of our birthdays and was ginormous! It had to be the best chocolate cake I have ever eaten, and everyone else agreed. They obviously have a great new pastry chef at Ledgewater.
For those of you on this thread for a while, this restaurant was the one where Michelle (luvrving) and Rick had dinner with us three years ago. That is a sweet memory.
We are headed to western VT tomorrow to visit my sister who lives in theconverted barn with her two big dogs. We will be staying with her overnight so I hope the "converted" part is accurate. My ragweed allergies are really acting up. There is just no way we could put off this visit any longer...since we have yet to see her "new" environment and she has been there over a year and a half. Yikes! Hoping my sciatica does not rear its ugly head too badly for the almost three hour trip.
Bedo, you are definitely among the pescatarians (?) these days! Nice meals...
Glad to see your post, Nance, and happy for your cool weather.

Lacey, gorgeous pics! And special, what a absolute pain the rear on the skin issues. Enough already! My heart goes out to you ladies with parents in need. My 78 year old mom holds up the fort for me. I can't imagine being without her.
Squid ! Tomato jelly! You are inspiring me. Just came back from a week at the beach and on a walk my mom noticed the miles of rose hips- said that years ago her family used to make rose hip jelly from them. Made my wheels spin- hmmmmm. What do you guys think? Would it be any good?
Tonight I will make a vegetable and cheese frittata- use up those leftover. Have leftover bechamel Mac and cheese- thinking I'd make a garlic butter bread crumb topping for it.
What's cooking with you guys tonight???

Lacey - I just happened upon Michelle's blog on Paris that I saved in my faves. Miss her. Your dinner spot looks fab, as does the cake!
Auntie and tinker bells - I agree - enough with the skin cancer! Unfortunately that will not happen - I have had more than 30 and they appear to be accelerating to several a year at minimum, so I just deal with them. I appreciate the sentiment though!
I managed to not go to the grocery store yet - made chicken tortilla soup for last night, topped with Luke's kale chips and other goodies, served with an iceberg wedge topped with blue cheese and crumbled bacon. Today I must go to the store - doesn't matter how creative I can be I am out of everything basic and fresh

It's a whatever night in my house for dinner, as in whatever is in the fridge that you want to eat!

Tinker - that sounds wonderful. I've never been a jelly maker. I need to try the 4 little containers of freezer plum butter I made but don't see DH eating it (grape jelly only and then not much of it). I say if you're up to it go for the rose hip jelly. I know they're full of vit. C. So long as they are unsprayed - bug/fert as such but seems they are au naturel. Your dinner sounds wonderful.
Such fun family pics Lacey. I always get confuzzled whether it's your sister or Susan's who lives in the barn. Maybe both? Be sure to take any allergy meds you have. It is very common around here to build a steel barn - big - and live in it for a few years b4 building the "home place". Know of 2 just down my road that did that. But really I see no progress on anything else so money is prob. the issue. Cert. plenty of land for anything.
Gads Susan. Not sure what the subway extension means to you/yours. Hoping negotiations go in your favor if that's your decided upon place.
Add my sorry too Special for the skin cancers. Ugh. Happened upon a friend from church.
Mommy - we've had the whatever nights. Last night DH had the leftover pizza, I think I had graham crackers. Snacking way too much during the day. Need to get my arse up and get some fruit or yogurt. Tonight will be the spaghetti I could not bring myself to cook last night. We need to go back thru the freezer and get out stuffs DH won't eat so I can have them for lunch. Announced he was not eating the eggplant lasagna I made/froze but would eat the ratatouille. Both have drifted somewhere in the freezer. My refrig. freezer needs major cleaning out. I have Tues. trash day and never remember to throw that stuff out.
Ah Bedo - I give all my portions of squid to you with my blessings.

luv - thanks for the skin cancer commiseration! I will also donate my squid portions to bedo, lol!

luvmygoats- I am proud to say I am a completely reformed former freezer hoarder! My freezer went from scary to bare. It took a few years and learning how to cook smaller amounts but here I am.
Tell me More about your goats

Yay squid and more squid
Mommy do this preheat oven to 4:25 cut an avocado in half. Remove pit break an egg into each. Put in oven for about 15 minutes till cooked eat YUM I would suggest spices or chives on top but I know you would never do that lol yes0 -
No squid for me, not a fan of seafood.

Busy life here. Amended offer has been assembled, but my realtor is on the Cape and has been a little slow to get us the paperwork that we need to sign. Thank goodness we told the seller's agent that there might be a two day delay. Tonight, I used the rest of this week's farmer's market bounty. A warm German potato salad, green salad, garden tomatoes with buffalo mozzarella that I marinated in last night's leftover pesto, and some lamb rib chops on the grill. Way too much food, but maybe the kids will enjoy tonight.
Special, it may be a regular part of your life, but these skin things you keep getting are a terrible drag. Really sorry that this is part of your life. Your attitude is remarkable!
Bedo, squid for me! Thank you very much..... such a delicious little critter and one of the most sustainable ones in the ocean. Next up, stuffing those suckers to bake! Maybe I can located a recipe for you. To be honest, I have never done that preparation since I think of squid as a fast protein.
I know there were more people I wanted to respond to, but I can't scroll up since I am on the next page. Sorry.....
Oh! The email with the offer has just arrived... of we go, again.

Fingers crossed for the offer response you're looking for Susan.

Bedo - I'll have some squid please.
Susan - good luck on the condo resolution. We're all sitting on tenterhooks. (I always wanted to use that phrase.)
Lacey - pictures are cute & meals sounds scrumptious,.
Special - guess we're stuck w/our geographic locations. I lived 20 years in CA, 7 yrs in New Mexico at 5000 ft altitude, and now 40 years in Texas. And we used to lie in the sun for hours covered in baby oil to accelerate the "tan". So far I've had 5 or 6 Mohs surgeries for basal cell carcinoma. I have a full body exam every 6 months and the derm doc never freezes fewer than 20 pre-cancerous lesions. This has been going on with the same dermatologist since 1996, tho she sends me to a special derm surgeon for the Mohs. The funny part - my first visit after chemo she was just astounded how wonderful my skin looked. Almost nothing for her to freeze. I told her I wouldn't recommend heavy duty chemo to her other patients for actinic keratosis, or any other skin conditions.
My cousin & her daughter were in town today from Arizona for more tests at MD Anderson. Sad part is the daughter is only 38 w/continually, fast growing sarcomas & she's already been battling this for 8 years. The Phoenix doc said 3-6 months to live, We ate at one of my favorite places, The Raven Grill. Each ordered something different and we split it up. I of course had rainbow trout, but gave most of my fish to cousin's daughter since it appealed to her and her taste buds are still messed up w/chemo. I ate the French green lentils and sauteed spinach w/pecans. Other entrees were fish tacos, and sweet potato & spinach enchiladas w/an ancho cream sauce, served w/black beans & cilantro rice. And this is the place that bakes fresh bread every day - whole wheat, cranberry-walnut, sourdough, and rosemary garlic. Who needs food with the excellent bread & butter.
0 -
Goodness, a lot of posts to read! Susan, good luck on the condo. Minus, that sounds like a great place to eat where you took your cousin and her daughter. Lacey, I enjoyed the photos.
I cooked a "hot dish" today for our dinner tonight. Whole wheat macaroni, diced Jimmy Dean turkey sausage, green peas, white sauce with cheddar cheese, s & p, onion and garlic powder. Side will be cooked fresh beets sliced with vinegar and olive oil and blue cheese.

Carole, You sure are a good cook
0 -
rosemary-garlic bread???? Oh, I want that now.
*susan*

Rosemary garlic bread *does* sound good. I think I have a recipe here for that....I'll have to look. I wonder how it would do with sourdough? I haven't exercised the sourdough lately. hmmmm.... :-) Hopefully the condo stuff works out in an agreeable manner.
The dermatologist is on my list of things to do. I've lived my entire life in the desert southwest and wouldn't be surprised that my old habits will cause pounds of flesh to be extracted...still, Special, that would be good for the surgeries to slow down.
As far as Jelly...Tinker,, I love making jelly. it's almost time for making prickly pear cactus jelly. Rose hips...hmm...I've never done that, but I don't have access to roses to get the fruit/berries...
It's been a long time since I've had squid--at least 30 years. I don't think I'd like it "plain", but with "other stuff"...it was really good.
Lacey..nice pictures and that's quite the cake....Little kids are a lot of fun....but then I'm 3 at heart myself, so we're about the same age..
Auntie, I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I think no longer driving would be a "double whammy" for your dad....loss of freedom and now having to depend (being a burden) on others to get around.
I've got to go get Nyquil and Dayquil for Sharon....she ran out....one sneaked past her immune system....
Edited to add....
While getting the cold stuff for Sharon, I noticed the store had whole pork loins on sale for 99 cents per pound. I have a bone saw and knives....25 pounds of pork is in the freezer.

Thank you, mysunshine.
The macaroni hot dish tasted good, but the cheesy factor disappeared when I heated it up in the microwave. I will grate more cheese and add for the next warm-up. The dish looked creamy and cheesy when I finished it.
Eric, that's alotsa pork in your freezer!
I'm in the process of embroidering a pot of rosemary design. After many years, I started embroidering again and am making MORE placemats! I found old-fashioned iron-on designs at a local quilt/yarn shop.
We're off to the gym this morning. After problems with the membership, our fob keys to the local Anytime Fitness are working again, thanks to my persistence in calling the corporate office.
