Susan - congrats. Is a signed offer the same as a purchase contract? Do I remember correctly that the kiddos will move first and you will take your time?

Nance - Not sure I'd loose weight on vacation, especially if they have good bread w/the fish. And think about that fried shrimp!!! Have fun.

Carole - How lucky to have real fall. Our nights have actually dropped to 76 a couple of times. Are you keeping track of the weather back home? BTW - how's your Mother doing?

Special - I don't know which is worse - trying to sell or trying to buy. I can't remember if you said close to Sacramento or close to Tahoe. Anyway - enjoy your visit & the sorting/cleaning/tossing exercise.

Sorry Susan. Yay for your good agent.

  • Minus, I usually opt for boiled or bbqd shrimp but it's mainly easier because I only eat three times a day and not so many tempering desserts in my face.

  • Thanks for the recipe link, Susan. Congrats on buying the condo. The "kids" must be happy.

SpecialK, hope you have a great trip. I know your dh and dd will be eating good food while you're gone.

Nance, could I please book a visit to your dbil and dsil? LOL.

I did catch a nice crappie this morning but we let him/her go back into the water when we didn't catch any more fish. It was so lovely out on the lake. And everything worked. The outboard. The trolling motor.

  • Carole, you can book a visit with me! I will even make you brownies!

  • Sounds like a winner, Nance!

Best-laid plans. My thawed fish fillets are in the refrigerator to be cooked tomorrow night. We ended up having grilled brats, cooked by the next door neighbor, who gave me a large zucchini and a couple of tomatoes along with instructions of how to cook them. The resort owner joined the neighbor and us and we had the brats, the zucchini, tomato and cheese dish, and some onions and potatoes cooked together. It was all rather impromptu.

  • Supper last nite was the rootbeer pork boneless ribkets. Actually they are very mesty, almost loin type. My DD2 stopped by with DGD1. We had fun. Baked the potatoes. And a sweet potato to share. Cooked frozen peas. The little one ate peas, sweet potato and gnawed on the pork. Made a lovely happy mess. So we gave her a bath in the kitchen sink with the spray which she loves. Got her in jammies and she fought sleep til they left. LOL. Gave them leftovers for her husband's lunch on 3rd shift. I'd have to freeze half of the one kabob and a whole one if they hadn't come over!

Tonight was left over chicken I thawed with leftover rice. LOL

  • Here she is. She's wearing the outfit I bought for her mother when she was in the hospital with a broken leg at about the same age. 9 months old, 33 years ago! LOL!image

  • Cute, happy baby! Moon, I'm amazed that you kept the little dress all those years.

  • What a cutie patootie!

Adorable, spirited looking baby! What fun for you, Moon!

Penance yesterday....two hours at the gym. It actually felt good to work all those muscles, but I was pretty tired afterwards. I look forward to getting back into my gym routine, as does DH.

Meanwhile....our evening in Back Bay was lovely, especially when we walked from La Voile back to our car. It was so balmy out, it reminded me of our summer nights in Boston years ago. And, of course, the city is alive with folks back from summer vacations and all the college students having returned. Our dinner at La Voile, with the friends who now live in LA, was delightful, in part due to our lovely, efficient and spirited waitress who was serving the lion's share of tables, always with a smile. We all chose the fixe prix menu. I had the most delicious caprese salad (not called that)with arugula and the sweetest heirloom red, yellow and orange tomatoes. Entree was duck breast with cherry sauce over sweet potato puree, and sauteed spinach. Dessert was apple tart with almonds. We all enjoyed our food, the ambiance, and the chance to catch up with one another.

On our way home, we got lost due to a detour off the Mass Pike that took us into a remote neighborhood in a nearby upscale town. The narrow winding roads were not well lit nor marked with consistent "detour" signs and we ended up in a "dead end" of someone's beautiful circular driveway next to their mini mansion along with six other "lost" cars. Fortunately, SIRI got us out of that maze and we were home by midnight. I felt badly for the homeowners who probably hosted lots more cars in their driveway while that insufficiently marked detour was in effect.

Susan, I'm glad that the real estate transaction made a positive turn. So you do not need to move or put your house on the market now, right? The young 'ens must be very
    happy!

    Oh.....warning....medical rant...

Last week we learned from a doc friend that DH's primary care would be joining a concierge practice with a membership fee required to continue with him. DH has really liked this doc and he is certainly the most competent, caring, attentive one either of us has had over the years. So, when we returned from the lake, his primary care's letter had arrived and DH obsessed about it for a while, but decided to stay with him, expensive tho it will be. I totally support that, but it is annoying that so many of the best docs here are going that route.

While that was going on, I received a call from Walgreens telling me to immediately stop using the eye allergy cream I have just started to use again a couple of weeks ago, given my surge in allergic symptoms this season. Apparently, the cream has been recalled by its manufacturer. Great! So I called my ophthalmologist who was obviously not in the office and the secretary told me I could get an answer about what else might be scripted by next week. Really!!?? I explained that the eye itching keeps me awake nightly w/o meds and I would hope not to wait that long. She did get back to me later in the day, and I have a prescription now being filled.....of course now I'm a bit leery about using a new one....maybe it won't be a steroid cream. ****Update the script was never called in....will deal with that tomorrow******

Once this is taken care of, I worry about my ophthalmologist not being available since she has been out twice in the last few years for cancer treatment. She is a great doc. Oy!

The bigger issue for me right now is that I have to find another functional meds person to see for these allergies since the huge practice I went to is out of business, as of last month, and my nurse practitioner has not worked out her future work plan yet. I would prefer to continue with her, if possible. What a mess! Maybe I can just ride it all out for a while....as long as the new eye cream works. :)

    End of rant....

  • Real estate rant: IT IS NOT A LEGAL THREE BEDROOM!!!!!!! Just went to the building department [I love love love my local government] and all the wonderful people pulled the permits and gave us advice, but the bottom line is, that third bedroom is not legal, at all. They made it look legal with the larger window, but the permit includes NOTHING about adding a bedroom. OMG! And, so, we wait to see how the fraudsters try to get out of this one. Oh, and they are trying to sell the parking spaces illegally as well!

Oh dear, Susan the karma is back circling the drain. Good thing you did your due diligence!

Made BLTs on toasted potato bread tonight. Cukes and yellow pepper salad, and potato chips rounded out the pre-game meal.

  • Susan sorry to hear of more real estate troubles.

Supper tonite was nothing. I couldn't eat all day. Didn't feel right. Threw up a couple of times. Then I got a call from my DH. His sister stopped her tx. It wasn't working. She fought all she could. She will be in Hospice with palliative care only. She was dxd with recurrent BC that was mets the same week I was dxd with Stage 1. Cancer sucks . Please pray. I was hoping to see her next month when I go to Colorado for a wedding. My sis and I were road tripping home via Helena, Montana where she lives. Now I don't know whether to hope she hangs on a while or just goes home to be free. She is the second person I know who has finished the battle and gone into final care this week. Did mention I hate cancer?

Guess we all have to just live our life to the fullest so look out world here we come.

Sorry for the downer but who understands better.

    Much love to all.

  • Oh Monica, I am so sorry. You are so right, cancer sucks big time. Hate is not a strong enough word for my feelings about it. I'm not sure there is one. I hope your stomach can feel better soon.

Susan, this just isn't going to be easy, is it? But you are on your game. Hoping this all works out in your favor.

Lacey, I understand the medical rant completely. I hate losing doctors, you invest so much in them. Hope the new eye med works for you. I just found out my insulin is not on next year's formulary so that means another change. I have to go through this every year. What a hassle, especially for the docs.

Dinner will be whatever we can catch after a day at DH's sisters house. Maybe with the fam.

We got half an inch of rain last night. Yay!

  • Moonflower: (alert--extreme understatement coming up) I can see that that news would put you completely off dinner.

Moon - so sorry about your SIL. If they can make her comfortable, hope she can hang on until after your visit.

Lacey - agree w/med rant. My MO retired in December. Not sure if the new one is going to work out or not but I sure don't feel any 'warm fuzzys'. My gyn retired in April - and she's the doc I used as a PCP for 15 years. Trying to find new docs who are under 50 so they might be around as long as I am is daunting.

For those of you dealing with real estate - my son is also trying to buy another house but I've been forbidden to talk about it in case it might jinx the project. They're buying it out of probate so once it's done (win or lose) I'll post a copy of the previous deceased owner's obit - which he wrote himself. Sounds like someone I would have enjoyed knowing. He was an only child & had no children & his wife per-deceased him by many years.

Moon, I, too, am sorry about your SIL. I do know that "cancer sucks" is not strong enough.

  • Last night's dinner was leftover red beans and brown rice. Side was a delicious salad of tomato and cucumber from the farmers' mkt. and a perfect avocado.

I went to see Lily Tomlin's Grandma yesterday w/a group of ladies from my neighborhood. She does an excellent job. The comedy is subtle and I think some of the older ladies in the audience were shocked by the language & some of the subject matter. I liked it, but 2 out of my group of 4 were 'disappointed' that it wasn't more rolling in the aisles comedy.

Afterwards we went to Katz's Deli and pretended we were in NYC. Rubens, pastrami on rye, open face hot roast beef, potato latkes, noodle kugel, Dr. Brown's Cream Soda....YUM.

Its a clean out the fridge night here (aka leftovers)

  • Minus that sounds like a wonderful day!

Today I ordered my half Berkshire pig, so i have until March to clean out the freezer. I've never bought half a pig before so I need to figure out what cuts I can get out of a half. I would like to get plenty of sausages so I'll need to do some research. Susan, you have gotten pork right? Any advice?

Right now I need to clean out the fridge since we leave next Sunday for our trip south. I'm going to kill two birds by having pork chops from the freezer, fixed some way or other, and green beans from the fridge. DH wants stuffing (of course) but I'm going to have some mixed greens instead. I'll make a small amount of stuffing for him.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day today with sunshine, 73 degrees and little humidity. We finished washing the outside of the house and I washed the outside of the back windows. During the process we noticed several small holes in the siding caused by the spring hail storms so it's a call to the insurance guy tomorrow. Hope it's not too late to file a claim.

  • went to Highland House yesterday for my birthday. Had my free Margarita, chose mango. Yum. Couldn't drink but half so my DH obliged by finishing it. Had a lovely grilled shrimp kabob with a beef tenderloin steak. Really good but I barely finished the shrimp. LOL. DH just had the tacos. They are really good there. Took home a slice of carrot cake for dessert.

Today was leftovers. But didn't feel like the steak so just had cereal. LOL

  • Monica, happy belated birthday!

Moon, another belated happy birthday wisher here!

Minus, that does sound like a fun day! Interesting that there is a Katz's deli in Texas. DH is a big fan of the NYC one.

Nance, how exciting to be expecting a half pig! ;) We might need to throw you a piggy shower!

Last night, I marinated, and DH grilled, a breast of turkey tenderloin that we bought at the turkey farm down the street from my sister's VT "barn/home". It was wonderful! Those little turkeys clearly benefit from the Vermont fresh air, beautiful views, and very kind farmers. ;)

Today we got lots of veggies and greens at the Farmer's Market, and I spent lots of time washing and organizing them before using some of the corn to make some chowder (non-vegan;). I used lots of the lettuces and the pea tendrils, tomatoes, scallions, arugula and carrots to make a large garden salad over which I sliced pieces from the last of the turkey breast. For dessert we had peach pecan bars with a drizzled icing which I made last night to bring to a church ingathering picnic today. Should not have doubled the recipe since we do not need such contraband in this kitchen!

I have decided that every baked dessert I make with peaches is too much work!! The boiling then cold water bath to be able to peel them, (if they have even reached a good ripe stage),then the butter/flour/oats cutting process for the crisp or pastry coverings. Annoying...clearly I am not a baker. So today at the farmer's market, it took a lot of restraint to bypass the very ripe looking peaches to save myself some more kitchen work. But I did! What do you folks make with peaches that doesn't take a year and a day to complete?

I did buy some zucchini (no garden, remember!) to make some zucchini salsa. Of course there are a zillion recipes for it, so I need to find one that feels simple and that begs for cilantro, since I got a big bunch of that.

Tomorrow, we'll have chicken breasts, more great salad and more corn since they were selling 14 ears for $3... Couldn't resist! I can always freeze some. Also saw a neat recipe that had corn fritters and zucchini salsa. Yum!

Yesterday we dog sat DS1and DGF's little Scottie pooch for an overnite while they attended a wedding west of here. He proceeded to dig a big hole in the middle of the back lawn, then came inside and threw up dirt and grass on the dining room oriental rug. Fine after that! :/ Generally he is not much of a problem, but DH announced to me that if he ever were to have a thought that he might want to get another dog, it was erased yesterday. We are on the same page about that!

Tomorrow is the return to stretching class, so I hope I feel more energized. Very low energy and fatigue this weekend. Tomorrow I will start the day with a super fresh smoothie from many of the greens I bought today, and hope that helps! :) Tho my sluggishness might be related to the continuing allergies and compromised sleep. Arggggh!

Special, hope you are having a great time in California. You certainly left the family in good shape with meals!

  • Lacey: I'm with you on the peaches--too much a pain in the butt to scald them. Pity, because I do love peach-raspberry tart.

  • I just read recently that if you slice the peaches and freeze them on a baking sheet, when they warm the skins come right off. I suppose you could even freeze them whole. Haven't tried it. I really don't care for cooked peaches and much prefer them eaten out of hand. Having said that, I have several large beautiful nectarines that must be used this week, so I'll probably make a couple of hand pies since I have some pie dough in the freezer.

Lacey, your comments about the turkey environment tickled me as I was quite taken by the fact that the Berkshire pigs are fed apples from the farm's orchard in the fall.

Other than peach pie, I have no idea what's for dinner.

  • Auntienance: I'll have to keep that in mind! though I suspect that the type of peach might make a difference in terms of peelability. Peach season's over in Michigan, but there's always next year.
