So...whats for dinner?

Red, next year load them all in the car and tell them that you've arranged for a "Special" Thanksgiving dinner.
Drop them off at the homeless shelter to help out, then take yourself out for a nice dinner.
Susan I hope things went well with your scan
This is day 4 of being sick. I haven't left the house/bed except to go to the Quicktrip store. This place looks like the Hazmat team should arrive, Bedclothes in knots, tissues everywhere and empty glasses ginger ale and chicken soup on the bedside table. Ugg. The cats are loving it. Going to pick up.

Haha Bedo, good one! I'm sorry you're sick though, hope you're feeling better soon.
I'm a little worried about Carole. Hope they didn't get caught in all the nasty weather.
Well all the prep is done, the table is set, the naked birds are languishing on the counter awaiting transport to the oven, the dressing is cooking away in the slow cooker, wines are opened and breathing, the plethora of pies on display are calling to me (DH says they're torturing him), the appetizers are out, only the guests have not yet arrived. It's officially The After Thanksgiving Feast at our house. I'm tired already.

Susan, I'll try that with the chilled first rise and I'm going to try a sourdough only batch to see how it works out too. It's amazing how much I can do when I'm not spending 3-1/2 hours commuting to work.
Red, I agree, most of the protests get co-opted by folks wanting to behave like jerks and idiots.
Bedo, feel better soon....I'm guessing the cats are trying to keep you warm?????? If you have three cats, then I guess it's a "three cat night".... :-)
Hi, Meow. I'm sitting here typing..well trying to type. Jessie, a probable Maine Coon from the shelter (right size, right attitude, right looks), keeps whacking my hands with his front paws and trying to lay on the laptop computer.....
I do like Lacey's DH and strip the carcass so I can fit everything into the refrigerator. I put most of the meat in freezer bags and then into the freezer and the bones go right into the stock pot for an overnight of simmering.
But first the chores.........

A plethora of pies

Oh my, Nance, you are my pie hero! They are so tempting....your guests better arrive pronto or I would imagine the tasty looking display might shrink!
. And no wonder you are tired! You are running a veritable restaurant and bakery!
I am doing absolutely nothing on this rainy day....except for screen time and getting some leftovers ready at dinner time. Hope you get to do this tomorrow, Nance.
Also hoping that Carole is doing okay. I think of her every time I see the national weather report, which sounds like challenging roadtrip weather. Am hoping it is media hyperbole.
Minus, that Napa Valley wine train gift sounds like one I'd like to put on my list!
Susan, I hope you are also resting today...and feel better, Bedo.
Also, Susan, we got to hear updates on condo completion progress from DS2, leaving me thinking that your contractor has the right idea for having clients select and access their own kitchen cabinets, etc. Their contractor installed a different granite countertop and it was unusually loud and "unfortunate". Fortunately, contractor is going to correct it at his expense. The young 'ens will be watching more closely!

Wow, Nance!

drooling all over my keyboard, Nance!

Bedo - love it - drop them off to contribute to the true spirit of the day. Needed that laugh.
Just got home from a glorious Christmas celebration program by Mercury Baroque: Vivaldi's Christmas Violin Concerto in E Maj; the Nisi Dominus RV608; Corelli's Concerto Grosso in Gm; some lovely early Christmas songs like There is a Rose of Such Virtue. They use only period instruments, and Susan, the concertmaster played one section on a violin I'd never heard of w/I think 7 strings and another 7 sympathetic strings? I poked around IthacaString, and maybe it was 6 string? The surprise was countertenor Ray Chenez, featured in the October issue of Opera news. He's won a Met competition & several awards. His range was amazing & diction perfect. So now I'm listening to Benjamin Britten's Ceremony of Carols to refresh my memory about the version of "rose" that I know. But how can you listen to just one song? Sorry for the hijack.
Ate afterwards at La Madelaine - French onion soup. cream of mushroom soup, potato gallette, quiche Florentine - and we managed to escape w/o ordering the wonderful dessert pastries.
If Nance's guests defaulted, maybe she'll have to FedEx those gorgeous pies to her friends on this thread!!!

I love La Madeleine! Unfortunately, they pulled out of the Chicago area, but whenever I visit my sister in the Arlington/Falls Church area, we go to its Tyson’s Corner outpost. Closest ones to me are that one and, in the other direction, Tulsa!

Hmm...don't know what happened....I put nine 12 ounce jars of broth into the canner. Five had lids from a new box of lids and all of those new lids failed to seal. I got rid of the remaining lids from that box and the jars with new lids are in the canner right now. Broth is rather forgiving about reprocessing, so I shouldn't lose any quality.
The bread dough is still in the refrigerator--decided to make two loaves of pure sourdough--and I'm about ready to wake it up....It's cold for Phoenix (a few degrees above freezing this morning)...baking and food preserving seem like a good way to spend the morning.

Hard day of coding..... the tool I am trying to integrate seems to have some bugs. Bugs that I have to work around. I finally, finally, finally got it to work [though it all feels brittle] and then we needed dinner! I took some September tomatoes that I had made into a puree out of the freezer, along with the last of the merguez sausages. The chicken stock was thawed earlier in the day, but when I opened it, it just plain looked wrong. Turned around the container and there is was: Marguerita Lime Mix! Whoops! Back to the magic freezer to grab some real chicken stock. Dinner was the sausage with a spicy tomato sauce. I started by sautéing the onions, added some garlic, then came the Ras El Harout, smoked paprika, a very good spoonful of harissa. The tomatoes were added and simmered. I then started on the saffron rice. Cooked the sausage, added to the sauce. Made the toasted almond and fried opinions [toppings for the rice] and dinner was served.
Darn do I love this meal!
Tomorrow we are headed out on our cabinet quest. First we head to Keene, then Claremont, before heading home. By the end of the day, we will decide who we are hiring to make our cabinets. We will order them before the end of the week to ensure a January delivery. Phew!

Margarita mix vs Chicken stock....yeah, I guess it would look a bit off. :-)
Baking powder in gravy or corn starch in corn bread...just doesn't work right..... I finally settled on Clabber Girl brand because the two containers, one yellow, one white, are different enough that I *shouldn't* confuse the two.
Susan, what kind of tool?
The turkey broth is put up on the shelf and the sourdough is done.

What is Glabber Girl? This tool is an API for Google calendar. Google sucks, but way too many of my clients have chosen to store their data where google can mine it for profit. [Damn am I cynical!]

I messed up on the post and edited it so it makes sense...
Clabber Girl brand baking powder and corn starch. The corn starch comes in a mostly yellow square plastic container. The baking powder comes in a mostly white metal cylindrical container. I *shouldn't* mess that up. :-) Before I did that I had problems with putting corn starch into corn bread and baking powder into gravy.....oops.....
No, you're not cynical.....People complain about the government doing the surveillance but volunteer for the "looking glass" with companies and the Internet is the most observed "place" on the planet. And it's amazing the lengths "they" go to in order to identify a computer browser. It seems as if HTTP 1.1 was designed to make tracking users very easy....even if the user deletes the browser cookies and Flash "cookies"....
Speaking of cookies..Sharon just took some from the oven. :-)

I love the regional name differences. We have Clabber Girl baking powder in Texas too. Sort of like I grew up in CA with Best Foods Mayonnaise and in Texas it's called Hellmans. Same exact label - different names.
Eric - wish I'd been there for the warm cookies. Susan - I probably would have used the Margarita Mix for drinks while I was making dinner. I've been trying to pay bills & budget for the rest of the year. Ugh!!!

Susan, I love that you topped everything with Fried Opinions.......LOVE YOU!
One time I was making Ratatouille and I went to sprinkle in the red pepper flakes. I opened the top of the jar and slung it across the skillet and I had apparently removed the shaker top from the jar the last time I used it and not put it b ack in.
I was frantic taking out by serving spoons 1/2 jar of pepper flakes. That was some spicy ratatouille.....

Hoping Carole is OK. It's sure been nasty weather for her long drive.

I know Minus, wish she would check in.
I use Clabber Girl exclusively. I like the can.
Off to make pie crust for pot pies. I would take the easy way out and use puff pastry but I need a crust for a couple of small pies to use up some leftover pumpkin and pecan fillings. I will try to freeze the finished product or give them away since I have plenty of leftover pie. The pecan is too good to throw away because I made it with maple syrup instead of corn syrup and the pumpkin is made with cream instead of condensed milk. Definite upgrades on both.

Hope Carol is OK too.
My Mom used ClabberGirl in Upstate New York.
Now you all have made me think of Mom and her Ratatouille. When I returned for my first college freshman break, she was so pleased with herself! She said "I made you Ratatouille, it's vegetarian!" Unfortunately, there was something about the eggplant and tomatoes and green peppers that was so unappealing, that I really did not like it. But I told her "MMmm Mom, this is good!" Thereafter, Ratatouille after Ratatouille after Ratatouille. I never told her that i hated it. I think that if it had fried onions on top, it would have been a major improvement.
I have pneumonia. I finally went for a CXR today which my doctor ordered after putting me on antibiotics. Just waiting for the Radiologist to read it and tell my MD, but the tech already told me, she was so cute "I'm not supposes to tell" but I saw it anyway.
No work. Whoo Hoo?

Lol Bedo, you're the only person I know who is happy about pneumonia. Hope the antibiotic does it's job and you're well soon!

Bedo, rest up. Been there several times. Besides the antibiotics, hot chicken broth and steaming (either with a facial steamer, head covered with towel over sink, or shower going full blast in a closed bathroom--maybe with a mint tea bag on the bottom of the shower) are your friends. Avoid stuff like Vapo-Rub, as the petroleum-distillate vapors could enter your lungs' alveoli and clog them--giving you aspiration pneumonia, which is even worse and harder to resolve.
Ideally, the chicken broth should come from an actual chicken, but the canned or boxed stuff is fine--and even reconstituted from “base" (Minor's, from restaurant supply stores, or “Better Than Broth") will do. (Not bouillon cubes or packets). If you have chicken noodle soup, the extra calories and protein will keep up your strength. THOSE vapors won't mess up your lungs--they will loosen & thin phlegm so you can cough them up more easily. Ask your doctor if you can take Mucinex too--it might keep postnasal drip from reaching your lungs before you can hawk it up.
I took a leaf from the Lazy Chefs of America playbook and just had cheeses & charcuterie for dinner. (I never have cured meat more than once a week or so, so I figure I’m not aggravating things). Used up what remained of my Serrano & Iberico ham, duck breast prosciutto, chorizo and coppa; cheeses were St. Augur (France) & Bayley Hazen (VT) blue, Ossau Irraty (France), Prairie Breeze (WI) cheddar, and Bermuda Triangle (CA) chevre. With a swig of Beauj. Nouveau. (Poured myself 4 oz., drank less than 3--in a nice big crystal Burgundy glass so I could swirl and sniff. How I love to play with my food!).

Thanks Chi!
That's exactly what I've been doing. Got actual chicken soup from the neighborhood Kosher deli. And some Campbell's and some eggdrop. I don't usually eat chicken- never actually-except when I'm really sick but the tiny pieces don't upset my stomach. You lose the enzymes needed to break meat down if you don't eat it for a while and it makes you really sick, but so far, (with adding fish a few years ago, after being vegetarian since 16,) so good
You are making me want to steam up my face and hair, and yes, I did pick up some Mucinex and pseudoephedrine from the store=which is kind of a funny story as I didn't have my ID to buy it, only my work ID and they wouldn't sell it to me, and I asked the lady behind me if she would buy it for me if I paid her, and a young man outside as well and they both looked at me and said. "NO" and "I can't do that"
I asked the pharmacist indignantly "Do I LOOK like I'm going to go home and make Meth???"
Unfortunately when I got home Stringy hair-check sunken eyes check asking strangers to do illegal things check
I did get my license and the sudafed.
All set

Bedo - Looks like you're prepared to hunker down. Hope you'll feel better soon.
I was going to use the last of my meat sauce from the freezer & do pasta tonight, but I'm really not hungry. Late lunch was a toasted English muffin (both sides) with crunchy peanut butter.

Careful with the Sudafed if you have hypertension or glaucoma! Friend of mine had a stroke in her 20s when she treated a cold with Sudafed without knowing her blood pressure. She forgot the words to the songs she’d written and had to relearn to play guitar. She came back better than ever, though--and the parody of one of her songs she wrote when she couldn’t find the original lyrics became one of her biggest hits!
If you get laryngitis, here’s a tip from a friend of mine who sings in the Grammy-winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir: hot & sour soup. If you can’t get the real thing, you can fake it by beating an egg into simmering chicken broth and adding a dash of soy sauce or tamari, white pepper and apple cider vinegar to taste. If you have some dried mushrooms, so much the better. And if you stir a slurry of cornstarch & water into it before serving, you’ll get that thick & glossy Chinese-restaurant texture as well. I tried it (without the cornstarch) and the next day I was able to play a two-set gig!

Hey Bedo, oy, so sorry for the pneumonia. Gypsy Cold Care tea by Traditional Medicinal is good, and so is the one called Throat coat by Traditional Medicinals (health food aisle)
Also, it helps to run a cool mist humidifier/vaporizer in the bedroom ....REST and eat your chicken soup. Do you have a nebulizer? They finally had me get one after 3 bouts of this and also the albuterol inhaler with a chamber attached......

Bedo...get well.

Bedo, feel better soon....and Carole...I keep thinking about you, and your DH and the half pig. Hope you are safe!
It is finally cold here, and dampish....nasty combo....even w/o being sick, I feel achy and chilly. And have been dragging my feet about calling the orthopod about my shoulder since it is no longer seriously painful unless I am steering into left turns while driving. That will be my diagnostic tip to the doc.
Tonight we had a most delicious turkey kale bean soup, for which I used the stock from the T-giv carcass. I added a tablespoon of the turkey drippings that I saved (having avoided making gravy from them by buying store made....horrors!). I think I'll freeze the rest of the drippings to use in future soups...a definite flavor enhancer.
Tomorrow evening we are heading into town to yet another Moth Slam. The topic is "On A Dime". Will be interesting to try this Boston venue which we are guessing will have a different population than the ones we've attended in Hvd Square. Who knows? They actually have food there, so that's where we will eat dinner.

What’s a “Moth Slam?” Is it anything like a poetry slam?
Brunch was low-carb whole grain bagel w/cream cheese, lox, tomato, red onion, dill & capers. Tonight was pappardelle alla bolognese with grated Parm Reg. and Pecorino Romano. Dessert was double chocolate gelato. Raining too hard out to grill, and the steak was still frozen.
