Of course, this is not my kitchen. This is the "kid's" kitchen. I have never had anything this lovely. Part of the plan: to make sure she is setup for success. Planning of this kind isn't easy, but it is the only way I can influence the future.

Susan with you as the designer she can't help but to succeed! And designing for someone else is almost as much fun as for yourself!

But, I am so very sorry that the scans came back so d*mn ugly. Sometimes kitchen table discussions take a serious turn. I was hoping for better news for you as i know you were as well. Putting one foot in front of the other and keep moving on is the only way to go. F*CK cancer. Im keeping my fingers crossed that pain stays way for a long time.

Chisandy let me know what venues you play in WI. You can PM me if you don't want it public. I'll look you up on ITunes as soon as my computer issues are solved.

Carrie o good to hear from you. Sorry you've been in a dark place. Those places sneak up on you. Hugs.

    Much ove to all.

Susan not sure on the story behind the house and its making, but it looks like you are having fun with the design and planning...my dream job in my next life. When you say you have never had anything this lovely, it just goes to show that you don't need anything fancy to be a great cook...I am always inspired by your culinary skills and inspiring meals. Your children are very lucky indeed!

tonight will be makeshift pizzas on Naan bread. two parties this weekend that will require an appetizer....maybe meatballs with a pineapple habanera sauce or a hot crab dip with swiss cheese and green onions

Lacey Leavin for NC next thurs and will be in their lighted Christmas boat parade on a friends sailboat...our boat still here in NY and believe it or not we actually just did a sunset cruise last week thanks to our unusally warm weather.

I wish Laurie would check in also,,,her boys must be getting big and full of adventure.

Carrie - there are a couple of people who follow Laurie on Facebook so we get occasional updates. But yes, I too miss her posts.

  • Others have already expressed the disappointment and worry I'm feeling about your scan results, Susan. I continue to hope for a treatment that works.

Carrie, what a treat to have you return and update us. Your experience with weaning off the Effexor gives me second thoughts about doing the same.

Lunch today will be a Sweet Sixteen celebration at a nearby country club. The girl is from Russia and was adopted when she was two years old. She is delightful. I know it will be an excellent meal and an enjoyable occasion. The parents are neighbors and I will have the opportunity to visit with several women neighbors. It appears to be a females only affair.

Sandy, low carb wasn't successful for me but I followed the Atkins plan that allows high fat, which I love in the form of cheese and cream in my coffee and full-fat dressings. Now I'm back to more of a "sensible" approach, limiting carbs and portions. Nature plainly does not make it easy for older women (my category) to continue to wear the clothing in their closets.

Tomorrow's Sunday dinner will be boiled ham (smoked shoulder) and red beans and rice and a salad. Very limited rotation when you're feeding an almost 93-year-old who requires easy-to-chew food and a man (my bil) whose diet consists primarily of meat and potatoes. I'll probably cook the beans this afternoon.

Dinner tonight will be navy bean soup cooked a couple of days ago. I forgot to cook the beans before adding some canned tomatoes so it took hours for the beans to become tender.

The squat-shaped winter squash was delicious. I poked holes in the skin and cooked the squash in the oven until I could slide a knife in it. Sliced the squash in half, removed the large seeds and scooped out the flesh, added some butter and Splenda brown sugar. I think it was better than butternut.

susan - I echo everyone's sentiments on your test results, glad you have the distraction of the construction project.  Hoping some new ideas at DF will be helpful.  The kitchen looks awesome on the plan - I would imagine it will be satisfying and challenging to bring the whole project to fruition.

carberry - yay!  Hello!  Good to "see" you but wish you had been gone because you were having too much fun!  Yay for the engagement!

lacey - so sorry to hear about your friend - so nice of you to make others aware for her, I am sure it is a relief for her not to have to do that.  I had a good friend who ended up with uterine CA after breast cancer treatment.  There is an arsenal of things to try, hoping something works to stabilize her.

carole - the squash sounds yum!  It is funny - I like the same things on my squash and my oatmeal - what's up with that?

Made some patty melts with homemade 1000 island and grilled onions last night, along with oven baked sweet potato fries and sriracha mayo dipping sauce.  Very naughty!  I am eating fun things since next week I have surgery on Thursday - a new tissue expander.  I tend to have issues with appetite after anesthesia so I am having a good time in advance.  I need to do a bit of cook ahead stuff that can be frozen for DH/DD.

Special "sriracha mayo dipping sauce" what genius. I will add it to my sriracha low salt soy sauce that I put on everything.

Please tell me that's all you put in it, or that it's ridiculously easy. I want.

Today I rise from the bed and venture forth. To the Noodle House for dinner.

Happy weekend to all who have a weekend.

And Special, positive thoughts heading your way on your surgery

    Much love to all

bedo - seriously, mayo with a couple of generous squirts of sriracha.  It's awesome possum.

moon - thanks!  I am attempting to set a Guinness world record for most hospitals visited in one metropolitan area (I am going to a new one on Thursday!), combined with most breast cancer reconstruction surgeries.  I think I can do it, lol!  All tongue in cheek aside - and I know you of all people get that humor, I appreciate the good wishes!

Special & Moon - chuckling about the world records because I've followed some of your sagas. I'll add my wishes for fast healing in advance to Special. What fun to eat whatever you want for a week. Will you have a scop patch for this surgery? That's the main thing that finally stopped my post-anesthesia vomiting. Interesting word question. My Mother only used the word "up-chuck". Did she think the "V" word was not to be used in polite company?

Some friends brought me a cup of New England clam chowder yesterday from the only restaurant in town where I think it's worth eating. Heavy cream, lots of butter.... Yum.

minus - I had never used a scop path until I had problems last year with the surgery in March - I was pretty deeply anesthetized and had nausea (no vomiting/up-chucking due to previous Nissen surgery for reflux in '95 - not sure if vomit is not a polite word?) for 48 hours and was pretty miserable.  Anti-nausea and emetics don't work well for me, Zofran a complete waste of time (learned this during chemo) and I get a nasty headache as a lovely parting gift.  They used Reglan during that March surgery with no help.  Compazine works well for me, but they don't like to use it for surgical anti-nausea - can't remember what the contraindication is.  So, when I had surgery a month later I had my first scop patch.  Voila - no nausea - yay!  So, now I get one each time and for this surgery my PS had me get it in advance and wants me to put it on the night before - interesting, right?  Also, she said to assertively inform the anesthesia staff about the previously used and useless drugs - once you're asleep they can do whatever, so she knows me well enough that is all she had to say, lol!  Thanks for the good wishes - I am hopeful that I can see the finish line in the distance....

And what to my surprise, I pop on this page and notice that the post I wrote before going off to dreamland last night never arrived here. Getting annoyed at the problem with my ipad and this site! Too many misses!

Without going into my whole lost post....saw Spotlight last night, then went to a tapas restaurant. The lamb meatballs in a truffle cream sauce and the sauteed variety of mushroms were my favorites.

Special, good luck next week....and in the meantime, enjoy your free pass eating! Yay!
I am also hoping that my friend is able to access some good options in the treatment arsenal. From what I understand from my DDIL, Hers is a very serious cancer, which women rarely survive. If there was someone who could it would be this friend...and she did, so far. Hoping for more "luck" in that direction....

Carrie, so good to hear from you, and to learn of your happy news about DS's engagement. Have fun on your boat parade in NC! My DS2 will be in NC visiting his DGF's family for a few days after Christmas. I hope he doesn't have too much fun in the warmer weather....we do not need any temptation for him to relocate there! And this is a tempting time as we move into Boston winter. Ha!

Today, however it was gorgeous out, (50ish and sunny) and I feel so happily spoiled on my walks in such weather.

Carole, I am with you on the weight management frustration. I had dreams of getting down another three lbs. about six months ago when I was at my lowest weight point....but summer slacking left me with five lbs in another direction which
I keep trying trying to lose. Despite a recent doc telling me that I need not worry because older women need to carry some weight (I believe she was talking about bone health concerns), I would at least like to return to my six months ago weight. I am not a happy wearer of tight fitting clothes, and it seems that the weight gained has settled on my hips. Oh well....first world problem! I know if I go back to my former exercise a lot at the gym everyday mode, that would take care of it....but I think I am a bit more in balance with my schedule now. Maybe when you finish your AI, you will find it easier to lose any extra lbs. I don't have that excuse with my renegade avoidance of meds now.
I hope the Sweet Sixteen luncheon was fun!

Spoke with DDIL today and planned for a trip to see them in NJ the weekend before Xmas. They leave for a Colorado ski trip on Xmas Day, so this will be a trip to celebrate DGS's mid-December birthday and Xmas... even tho their family is Bah'ai and they do not celebrate Xmas for themselves. On that trip, we will also stop in CT to see my stepmother, who sadly doesn't feel up to making the trip to NJ with us. She is so mentally sharp that it is hard to see her feeling physically less able. But at least we will enjoy a visit with her in her home, and maybe a dinner out close by.

Moon, when I play in WI it’s usually at sr. centers & occasional house concerts & street fairs. But a couple of times a year I’m at The Brink and Wild Hog in the Woods in Madison.

Carole, for now I’m doing what my PCP and MO told me: avoid everything white except protein, dairy (PCP urges eating full-fat) and cauliflower. When I land in Italy, I will try to switch to stay as close to healthy Mediterranean as I can---“when in Rome....” Then back to the no-white-stuff plan when I get home. If I do gain, I sincerely hope it goes to the hips, thighs & butt rather than midsection and face!

SK, so will the TE placement result in additional surgery? I truly hope you heal fast from this one. And no ill effects from anesthesia! General anesthesia makes me so so sick, I now tell every surgical staff person who talks to me beforehand and they give me something ahead of time and in the iv. Pepcid maybe? Whatever it is, it's worked the last three surgeries, for which I'm very grateful.

Today I ground pork for breakfast sausage and lamb for merguez. Tomorrow I'll make the pork sausage into pattys and stuff the merguez. The additional fat I added and a few seasoning tweaks have given this batch a much better consistency and flavor.

Tonight is spaghetti and meatballs, having thawed the sauce and meatballs a couple of days ago. What I really want is a salad, but I'm too tired to make it so perhaps that will be tomorrow nights dinner. All your meals sound better than mine.

auntie - yes, I will need exchange surgery sometime next year, and because of all the recent surgery on the problem left side it will most likely not be able to be expanded enough to match the reconstructed right side. At exchange we will have to most likely downsize that side to match. There is also the possibility of some fat grafting later next year too. My original implants were too big, the right one is uncomfortable so I'm ok with going smaller. I also get Pepcid, the scopolamine patch and my PS gave me some anti nausea for afterward too. Got my bases covered

Special good luck with the surgery...I also had various stages of my surgeries at different hospitals (my surgeon practiced at several and scheduled me wherever there was the fastest opening) Some I don't even remember....We could be on the hospital review boards if we did remember....haha

trying to clean out the refridg before we leave for nc, mostly the fresh vege stuff that wont be good when we get back. got some chicken and corn, so I will do a chicken corn chowder as I know my DH will eat the whole pot and there wont be any leftovers.

Carole...the funny thing about the med is...that I took it for hot flash relief (did not have depression that I knew of...a little anxiety maybe) and I weaned myself really slow (months) sooo not quite sure what happened that I got so down when off it All good now, though, and marching forward

Quick note, for Carole, the "pork queen" .....I am watching The Chew and Mario Batali is making an easy pork chop skillet dish (sweet and sour, I think) with orange and yellow bell peppers and garlic. It looks like it will be wonderful. He is not turning the chops until the end of the show...how easy is that?! If you check on their website, they will list it under Mario's recipes. I keep thinking of how many pork recipes you will want to be using now that your freezer is full!

Last night I made a sort of cod provencal, topped with feta. Had orzo and a garden salad with it. Probably should have skipped the orzo, but I can easily rationalize those tiny guys.

Went to see a hilarious one woman show last night - "Sister's Christmas Catechism". Two of us were raised in Catholic schools, two were not. We all had tears running down our faces. Dinner afterwards was delicious: Veal Parm, Linguine Pescatore, grilled Red Fish in lemon butter & wine, Prime Rib. Unfortunately we also had delicious appetizers - calamari, spinach & artichoke dip - so none of us has room for dessert.

hooray for this kitchen table!!! Will one of you who participate in Facebook please tell Laurie thanks for starting this thread & let her know we think of her often.

    carberry - I know, right?

lacey - I just did pork loin chops last night, pan seared then finished in the oven, and cooked onion and Granny Smith apple slices in the pan drippings - easy and fast.  We had creamed spinach and sweet potatoes with brown sugar glaze.

minus - I want to eat all that stuff!!!  Unfortunately my plan to eat fun things has gone awry - my PS has me on a prophy antibiotic and it is messing with my tummy - so I have not eaten much in the last couple of days except for last night's aforementioned pork chops.

  • A happy carnivore I am. Tonight's dinner was a big thick rib eye that we shared and small boiled white potatoes. They were good, too, with butter and sour cream.

We could have had all the leftovers but I was in the red meat mood. Dh is a master at cooking steak on the grill. He has a magic fork.

More Adventures of the Lazy Gastronaut:

Yesterday early afternoon went to brunch and had egg-white/chevre/sundried tomato scramble with cucumber-tomato salad; Drank a Virgin Mary and then a “meh” domestic bubbly (J. Roget, IMHO good only in mimosas). Dinner out was sharing steamed mussels Provençal (gave DH the croutons, I used a spoon for my half of the broth), then pan-seared sea bass with diced tomatoes and sauteed asparagus. Drank a Chandon Brut split (aaaah, that’s more like it). Late night snack of tuna salad & tomato slices on whole wheat hi-fiber lo-carb bread.

This morning had a fried “egg-in-the-hole” using the aforementioned lo-carb bread. Midafternoon snack was sugar-free chocolate and a breve cappuccino. Ordered out for dinner from our favorite Indian restaurant: seekh kabab, 1 cube chicken breast tikka, 1 sm. piece of battered cauliflower fritter (nod to Hanukkah tradition of deep-fried food), stewed eggplant, tandoori chicken (leg & thigh) and a pappadum. (Let non-dieting DS go to town on the samosa, pakora, other fritters, roti bread and rice). Washed down with seltzer. No wine today or tomorrow, to make up for yesterday and Sat. night’s Bar Show cast party (started downstairs at Kitty O’Shea’s w/a non-alc. Kaliber, then at party progressed to a glass of prosecco). Also have a champagne tasting coming up Thurs. night.

Happy Hanukkah--lit the second candle....uh, screwed in the second lightbulb.
