So...whats for dinner?

Dinner tonight was a grilled whole chicken, spatchcocked, roasted Greek potatoes and a huge green salad with a mustard vinaigrette. After the kids got home from work, I rewarmed the potatoes, made him a new salad, and a bowl of peas for the girl. The chicken was so good it needed no additional manipulation.
Our weekend on the Cape was wonderful. Friday was L's night to make dinner. She did a grilled steak, baked 'tater, and a salad. Saturday night I made lamb chops from this year's lamb [oh man are these good!], a sweet potato gratin and another salad. Friday I made a buttermilk blue cheese dressing; Saturday was a lemon vinaigrette.
I am not feeling that well as I have decided to stop taking the Letrazole. I don't remember feeling so horrid when stopping aromasin, so this is a bit of a shock. The house project is steamrolling forward. I am trying to keep up!

Good grief I ate bowling alley pizza tonight....But now I am reading about steamed mussels and roasted Greek potatoes....and now I want to eat all over again.....

Everybody's meals sound wonderful, especially the Chandon ;-)
Tonight we had two of the merguez sausages that I made on Sunday. They were very tasty and nicely spiced this time in spite of being slightly overcooked. I can't seem to get the grill timing down on these (especially when grilling in the dark.) Today was Clean Out the Refrigerator Day so sides were sauteed yellow squash, zucchini, onions, peppers, garlic and fresh tomatoes, and potato pancakes made with leftover mashed potatoes.
Tomorrow is a doctor day in the city so I'll try to stop by Trader Joe's and do some other shopping on my way home. Living in a small town, I have to maximize those shopping opportunities! Unfortunately that will make me too tired to cook so dinner will no doubt be something from the freezer.

Have fun food shopping at Trader's Nance. I was there tonight on my return from gym....to get some organic grape tomatoes. Right!! Picked up two nice white (sort of yellow) poinsettias and also some small xmas cactus plants that were adorable and will brighten our kitchen bay window. I ended up buying more bagged greens (making smoothie for the rest of week tomorrow) and that delicious pesto gouda cheese that DH loves. At the check out line they had these boxes of chocolates that looked like large round pebbles....very pretty and varied flavors. I know I can use them for something over the holidays.
All of your meals....in and out (!) sound so wonderful.
Tonight dinner was solo so I thought I'd do my kale sauté with eggs, (it's turning into a compulsion!) but I was starving by 7PM after putting groceries away, and saw a nice ripe last slice of brie in the fridge so ate that with pretzle crackers (unrecommended!), then poached the two eggs that awaited on the counter and had them with a chunk of sour dough bread and a small spinach salad with red onion and pear slices, evoo and balsamic. When DH arrived home about an hour later we each enjoyed a giant orange from a bushel we recently purchased from the local Exchange Club. Not sure where they come from, but they sure are delicious!
Minus, I enjoyed your account of the one woman show as much as your drool worthy dinner report!
Susan, I'm sorry that your body is responding that way to stopping the AI.
Maybe hormone related reactions? I don't recall any reaction to abruptly dropping the Tamoxifen, other than being able to sleep and think! But they are different drugs....just both hormone related. Hope it passes......

Cornbread in the oven in an iron skillet. Mustard greens with pickled pork and turnip roots with ham left over from Sunday's boiled ham will go great with the cornbread smeared with butter. .
Susan, your chicken dinner sounded perfect. I will do baked chicken soon. I have two chickens in the freezer.
Lacey, I had several wedges of brie (warmed in the microwave) with crackers for lunch. What is better than brie?

I had a serendipity today...in the form of a wonderful chat with the woman who started the Copper Kettle Baking Co., where the Welsh Cakes I buy at Volantes are made. I was calling to see if I could pick up some of her "cakes"and Welsh Cake Mixes to give as hostess gifts over the holidays. I had no idea where this "bakery/store was. Well, there is not a brick and mortar store, just a contract kitchen in a neighboring town, but we struck up a great conversation about many things beyond her bakery business, and she is going to bring my order to my house since she is coming to my town this week. Even better she is going to throw in an extra mix so that I can experiment with egg and butter substitutes acceptable to the "doc vegans". This will be fun!
Tonight we had a store roasted chicken, roasted acorn squash with a drizzle of maple syrup and sprinkle of cinnamon, spinach salad with pear, scallions and walnuts, and a vegetable (onion, carrots, broccoli, black olives, garlic powder and mint) toss with the orzo I had leftover from Sunday. Boy, I like orzo!!
So this afternoon we bit the bullet and bought our tree! Ha! For the past five years we've talked about just getting a Charlie Brown style tree...and every year we back down and get a regular sized tree. Well this year neither of us was the least bit ambivalent, and the pic below shows it! We have it on a perfect small table in the living room, and DH already put on the lights (in record time!). The biggest problem as I see it is deciding which of our zillion favorite ornaments make the cut for adorning this "tree". I actually think it is sort of cute.

Tonight, some of the leftover chicken breast turned into chicken salad. I served it with a green salad dressed with a Greek vinegar. We both pulled breads from the freezer... I chose a French dinner roll, he chose a rustic mini-loaf. We have enough chicken salad leftovers for lunch tomorrow. I still have half a breast to work with and then STOCK!!!!!
Lacey, you are getting home delivered Welsh cakes? You are so bloody cool!
We purchased our tree at Costco. $31 and it is perfect! Not too big. Not too small. Just right. And the price is ridiculous!
The house renovations continue to consume most of every day. My to-do list is growing every day. This only begins to describe what our days are like.... each day is an adventure. The Great Sergio says he wants/needs to be done with our job by February 1st. Amazing isn't it?

Lacey - love your tree. I did sort through ornaments last year and got rid of a ton of stuff. I still had the big old outside lights that my parents past along when I first got married. Also chose a bunch that I know nieces, nephews & their children would like in the future, so those went in the gift drawer & they'll get one every year. My favorite tree was the years we were flying out of town to my folks so we had a live Norfolk Island Pine.

A package of ground turkey and a box of chopped spinach are thawing. I will mix them together with other ingredients and make a meatloaf or meatballs. Haven't decided. The meatballs would need a tomato sauce. Veggie will be sautéed yellow squash and zucchini.

Continuing my lazy gastronomy, ordered out for Peking duck, wonton soup and stir-fried Chinese broccoli. I had one wonton and one little crepe for the duck last night (skipped the rice), and had another duck rollup this morning. Just that little bit of carb made my weight rise a pound and a half. Sigh.

Tonight I was STARVING. This doesn't happen often these days, so we decided that Chef Lorenzo should cook for us. His small Mexican restaurant is turning into a favorite spot for a casual mid-week supper. I ordered the tortilla soup and a tostada. This was my first time ordering his tostada and to be honest, I think it was the best one I have ever had. A crispy tortilla topped with his delicious black beans, grilled dark meat chicken, some shredded lettuce, crema and a bit of queso fresca. The plate had TWO of these guys, but Mr. 02143 did me a favor and ate the second one with gusto. Next time, I will order one and ask for a bit of pico de gallo and some salsa verde. Mr. 02143 had the carnitas plate with extra pico de gallo. You can always tell when Chef Lorenzo is in the kitchen. The serving sizes are really large. 6:30 on a Wednesday night and we were the only people in this 18 seat spot. I guess around here, people really want tex-mex and don't know or value real Mexico City food. I will miss them terribly when they close.

Made tomato soup and grilled cheese sammys for DH and DD, I am fasting except for a hot caramel apple spice drink - I tolerate anesthesia better this way.
susan and chisandy - both of your meals sound fab - I am a big tostada fan! susan - yay for appetite!

p.s. Computer is acting up which isn't acceptable when you make your living as an IT specialist. I am going to wipe my drive and rebuild. I might disappear for a day or two while I undertake this arduous and nerve-wracking task.

Special - Tomorrow's the big day!!! Hope everything is easy & the result is what you want (finally).
Susan - I still can't imagine keeping your schedule. But amazing that a contractor has a finish date.
Tomorrow I'm finally getting all new windows. I spent today dragging furniture to the middle of the rooms, but I have some pieces in front of windows that are too heavy & they will have to move. Dinner was easy - baked flounder fillet w/butter & Penzey's Foxpoint seasoning (salt, shallots, chives, garlic, onion & green peppercorns); 1/2 a baked potato & green peas. I expect I'll spend tomorrow afternoon & Friday dragging all the furniture back into place.

Hope all goes well tomorrow, Special!

Good luck Special!
Minus, I am admiring and envious of your having that window job done. We could really do the same in this hundred year old house, but the reason I keep deferring it is because of the work it would involve clearing the way for the workers, the worry about mess...and my allergic reaction to having our "old construction" floating around in the air. I hope yours is messless and fast. My next door neighbor raved about how easy it was. Hmmmmm.
Sounds like a great meal, Susan! I forget the news you probably shared that your fave mexican restaurant was closing. That's disappointing. Good luck with your computer fix.
Tonight our menu was based on a fridge search. Found two portobellos that I stuffed with diced onions, potatoes, carrots and a bit of the chicken leftover from last night. Added some balsamic and topped with mozzarella and parmesan. Not too special, but good enough. Salad was blend of baby spinach and romaine, red onions, orange bell pepper, grape tomatoes, and some diced spicy cherry peppers that I get in a jar from Trader's. I recently bought a bottle of a pinot grigio vinegar that adds the most delightful flavor to my salads. So I use it often with EVOO for a refreshing light dressing.
Am trying to get motivated to start my pizzelle making process....and wondering if I can possibly alter the ingredients to make them "doc vegan" friendly, so I can bring them some on our visit next weekend. Oy! DDIL was always crazy about them. Wondering if she strays from her vegan regimen for special treats. We'll see....

My favorite Mexican restaurant is not closing... yet. But they can't stay open with the number of customers I have witnessed. I am on an old computer.... the reformatting isn't going as well as I had hoped.

Good luck tomorrow Special.
Lunch today was Panera----tomato soup and 1/2 grilled cheese. Jackie had veggie with pesto soup and greek salad.
tonight was a 1/2 sub sandwich from the local college dive. Dermatologist took something off my arm. said depending on the biopsy I might have to use some "wicked" crème to finish the job.... Lets hope not.

Thanks everyone!
minus - this is an expander placement, so I will be thrilled if the PS can just get it successfully in there! Definitely not the finished product, whatever that is, lol!

Good luck SpecialK!
All your talk about chicken had me in the mood for grilled chicken tonight but a trip to the grocery ended with an unusual piece of beef in my cart. It was called a petite loin strip. The best way to describe it is that it's similar looking to a small top round roast but clearly a steak cut. It turned out delicious and cooked prefectly. A largish baked potato and mixed greens salad with Danish blue cheese, bacon and pear completed the meal. The chicken is still in the fridge.
Going to Colombia tomorrow to meet up with my DSIL for lunch while the hubs go to some car museum. I'll probably try to do some shopping while in civilization. I need to pick up some nice cheeses for the holidays. I didn't make it to trader Joe's yesterday. I ran out of steam.

I just read all your posts and it struck me how much you all mean to me, and how much you have helped me in the last 4 years.
So I wanted you to know that.
I went out for Vietnamese tonight.
This Friday I go to Ophthalmologist (have a cataract way to early I think from Arimidex) and mammo (have avoided for way too long)
It seems that I can't work 4 days in a row without being completely worn out anymore, so I am going to ask to go back to working Mon, Tues, off Weds, then Thurs, and Friday. I'm not that old, it's kind of disturbing, as I don't consider myself that old. Maybe it's just from getting over pneumonia.

Lacey, I love your tree. Here's our version of the CB tree

It took 10 minutes to put up and decorate lol!
Awww Bedo, we love you too! (((Hugs)))

Bedo, I like the idea of you changing your schedule to accommodate your energy level. And, yikes!! You are just getting over pneumonia .....shouldn't you feel tired? Take it easy.....:)
Sweet tree, Nance. I often think of you when I watch our suburban "wildlife" enjoying our trees and birdbaths. Having warmish weather (with more on the way) has been such a bonus. Hard to even remember the system of tunnels the chipmonks built under our deep blanket of snow last Feb.
Here's the final Charlie Brown project!

All credit to DH. I no longer try to "symmetricize" his efforts.

Good luck tomorrow, Special--hope this time’s the charm. Susan, we have a fave authentic Mexican (Jalisco-style) restaurant in our ‘hood too, and it’s doing well. There’s also a huarache joint several blocks away, but they’re not open for dinner. Chicago has a huge Mexican community, from all over (largest contingent is from Michoacan), so a Tex-Mex place would not do as well here as it would out in the burbs.
Dinner tonight was eclectic--leftover Peking duck, tandoori chicken, Chinese broccoli and a little Israeli salad (wish Whole Foods would put tehina in the dressing, though--all of their ethnic stuff gets American-hippiefied. I mean, a turkey banh mi sandwich? Really?). Now to try to resist the kolačky DH brought home from the office tonight......sigh.....bring on the starch-blockers & gymnema...
Went to Mariano’s to refill the coconut-almond milk supply and came across gigantic Amish-farmed cage-free eggs. We have about a dozen older ones in the house, but while we’re away in Europe DS would probably have run out and subsisted on Honey Nut Cheerios (or worse, gone to Mickey D’s), so I had to buy them to try. I know I should eat the older ones first, but there’s a jumbo speckled brown Amish egg cooing seductively at me through the fridge door: “Tomorrow morning.....fry me.....extra virgin olive oil...maybe nuke some bacon on the side....."

Lacy, your tree reminds me of my DIL trees. For the last couple of years they lived they were all table top trees. My DMIL used to get mad at my DFIL for picking table top ones. She said "WE LIVE ON A TREE FARM AND THIS IS WHAT YOU PICK????" LOL
Supper today was my annual gathering of girl scout leaders. I was going to say Old girl scout leaders but that was mean. Of course we are all old. Our girl scouts are in their 30 and older by now. LOL. We've been meeting for 20 years or so. I picked the Bengali Shrimp. I love shrimp and it's expensive here. But i planned on about 20$ and it was. Last year I had lobster cause that was the Same price as the shrimp. I also had the spinach salad with the bacon dressing. Of course I did! Then we did our exchange and the last lady to pick got her own. LOL. So we d some swapping and everyone was happy. Fun night.
Much love to all.

Most of my computer is back online. Still downloading some critical software and searching for install codes.
Hope that Special's surgery has gone well. Chicago has a huge Mexican population, but Boston? Nope. Most of our South American immigrants are from farther south. That is one of the reasons that this spot is so special. He is a trained chef from Mexico City while most of the other hole-in-wall places are run by folks from Ecuador or Guatemala. Loving the trees. Our is still sitting in a large container of water outside.
I have braised the last of last year's lamb shanks. The house smelled wonderful all day long. It is resting [and separating] now. I pulled the meat off of the bones since one shank is just too much for one person these days. For Mr. 02143 and me, I will make polenta. The kids eat later, and they prefer noodles.
My small rant. Dana Farber is clearly not going to be a place I love. When they call, my phone says No Caller ID. For years, I have not answered any calls that say No Caller ID. And now I have to answer No Caller ID on the off-chance that it is my doctor? Todays' call was from a young girl with marbles in her mouth who asked why I had not sent my records. I replied, well no one has asked for my records. I was asked to send my last in-office visit notes, and my last scan report and I did. Oh, she said, you are coming from the BI? Yes. Oh... never mind. She just called and didn't need to! So far, every interaction with this group of people has irritated me. I have gone from the most patient centric place in the world to the least. I hope that I did not make a mistake....
*susan*
p.s. I should add the tone of this young woman was that I was incompetent or stupid or non-compliant. It was like she was talking to a toddler who had just kicked the dog; a bad child. :: shudder ::

My impassioned response: OK Susan, first off, to me, it is totally unacceptable for DF to place calls to patients that show up as "No Caller ID". I know no one who answers those unidentified calls. Thus, I would suggest that this is an incredibly inefficient, and even unsafe way for them to conduct this very sensitive and important business with people who are relying on them. WTF!!! If this is the way that this department of a prominent hospital in our "medical mecca" regularly communicates, I hope you have the energy to call the administrator there and let him/her know that such a plan may well result in your not gaining the care that you require and for which have been referred. I have NEVER received a medical office call with no ID. It certainly warrants a question to the admin about when their phone system might be "repaired" so that you do not miss any important communications from your provider.
As to the demeanor of the insensitive clerk, I want to respond like a helpless two year old and "tell on her"! No one should be in that front line position who posesses such a lack of compassion and general social skills. Maybe she sould join my kindergarteners...in a couple of weeks we will be tackling, 'Nice Talk'. As you can tell, this interaction has really struck a nerve with me...and I do NOT want you to have to deal with such unnecessary crap as you navigate through this next phase of treatment. Please let me know what I can do to support you.
Love the sound of the braised lamb shanks! Reminds me of those from Sweet Basil....which, in my opinion, is their best offering, served with polenta and roasted vegetables.
We had marinated, grilled chicken thighs tonight with mashed butternut squash, an arugula salad and some fake (flakes) mashed potatoes for DH. Am also marinating two large turkey drumsticks which I'll cook tomorrow to be eaten sometime over the weekend
since we will eat in town tomorrow on our way to the Celtics game. I must be the only NBA fan on this thread...and I really love our "young" team in this Celtic rebuilding process. Tomorrow night they are playing the undefeated NBA champion Golden State Warriors, which is a BiG DEAL and I am excited to see the GS superstar star, Stephan Curry, who is an amazing athlete and decent human, good daddy, etc.....a rarity in the world of sports! The Cs might be trounced, but they will work hard....and who knows....:)
I've discovered the downside of our warmer weather.....no more frost means some more allergens. I was up coughing all night, and am back on Claritin until we re-enter winter mode. Talk about weather ambivalence on my part! And we will be going to NJ next weekend where the weather will be even warmer. Oh well, the up side is spending time with DGS and DGD. Saturday will be chaos at his BD party with tons of kids at a "Glow House", but hopefully we will be able to enjoy quieter times with the kids on Sunday.
Received my Welsh Cake drop today and met the owner of the business. She is delightful...and seems to be running quite a growing business! I plan to make up some little food treat gift baskets with the mixes in them along with some nice jam/ honey, and some tea/coffee.
Special, hope you are feeling okay after your procedure....

Susan, that does sound irritating. My mom uses/goes to Mayo Clinic in Phoenix. When they call, it gets a Mayo Clinic caller ID name with a number that points back to a number that when called plays a recorded announcement. So one gets a meaningful caller ID but it doesn't disclose a private telephone number.
Mexican food is not an issue here in Phoenix.. :-) A lot of it is "Tex-Mex", but if I hunt around a bit, I can get all of the regional variations of Mexican food.
Moon, my mom was a Girl Scout in 1930 and a camp counselor in 1936. The Girl Scout movement wasn't that old when she started.
Special...I'm hoping your TE placement goes well and "runs to completion"..and that you're feeling at least "OK".
We still don't have the tree up. It's a fake one.. I'd like to get a real one--always had one growing up--but a live tree bother's Sharon's allergies.
Tonight I went to the occupational health place and got my commercial driver license physical exam. The exam is pretty much useless as "are you healthy" exam. I can see, I can hear a whisper, I don't have a too big neck, I can pee in a cup and I can close my eyes and stand on one foot.....
0 -
Well, I guess a commercial driver hopeful need not stress over such a PE, Eric. Yikes! Another reason to avoid the highway.... How is you mom doing, by the way?
Today is my darling DGS's 5th birthday. I'm enjoying memories of finishing work and racing to Manhattan to meet that sweet baby as soon as he was born. And next week we get to celebrate with him and a ton of relatives and pre-schoolers at a Glow House in NJ. I'm gladthat I really "get" five year olds!

Hi all - expander placement went well, I'm so pleased, as is the new PS. Only drawback to the day was that they moved up the report time by 30 mins, then the surgery before me was started two hours late. I spent almost 5 hours in pre-op. The good news is that have TV in each pre-op room, complete with a movie channel! This was my first surgery at this brand new hospital - all staff was excellent, competent and friendly. I am a proactive patient with a number of drug allergies and complications, and they all listened and acted accordingly.
