Dinner will be a rerun of last night, so long as it isn't storming out and keeping me from grilling. If it is, then I'm ordering out for NYC pizza.

Susan - glad that the Xeloda is working so well and that you have a schedule going forward. This is great news. Does your 7/on 7/off mean more or less toxicity than you've been dealing with? Wow - 6 pills per day. I hope they are on the small side. Olivia is adorable.

Lacey - Forgot to say - I would hate the hedges across the street being removed. I love the privacy hedges provide - as well as the landscape benefits.

Moon - I'm always glad when you check in. Special - remember Moon's saying from other threads: Just Because you Can, Doesn't Mean You Should. Take this time to just do nothing & nap as often as possible.

I had lunch today with a friend at a Japanese restaurant across town. Her husband died last month and I knew this was a place that is quiet and we could sit & talk as long as we wanted. She's doing OK but I expect it will all hit hard when they have the memorial towards the end of June. I had a great Bento Box lunch - miso soup, salad, shrimp & vegetable tempura, two pieces of a hand roll (tasted like California Roll) and fried rice. I ask for Ponzu sauce & the owner suggested I also try a Wasibi/honey combination. Quite good. Houston has a Mexican restaurant in every strip center. Lots of Chinese places & more Vietnamese too. The new places opening seem to be Asian 'fusion'. But good Japanese restaurants are hard to find. I hadn't been to this one in 10 years but it was still worth the treck.

Oh Susan, what a sweet girl! You must be such a proud grandmama. So happy about your scan results. Really hoping the new regimen is kind to you. I hope you didn't buy a Samsung dishwasher. I hate mine. We bought it because it's quiet and that is the only thing to like about it. The cycle is too long, the dishes don't get clean unless you "prewash" them, and the labels have rubbed off the control panel. Ugh. Never again. Oh, and it wasn't cheap.

Carole -- safe travels to the northern reaches. I hope the weather isn't too capricious.

Minus - I don't know, your pool "job" doesn't sound like much fun. It's nice that you're willing to take that on. I would probably do that too, but I would probably grumble about it a lot lol.

Lacey, that's so sad about the trees and hedge! I would hate that. But the wedding sounded wonderful and the food was fabulous! I would have loved to graze there! Good news on the derm appointment.

Once again, our a/c went on the fritz yesterday. $280 later, we're back in business. This happens every season but usually on a weekend or holiday. Got lucky I guess. Sigh. Oh Eric, I wish you lived at my house.

Tomorrow I go see my dad and take him to pick up his new glasses. We are waiting on a date for his apartment. I really would like to start packing his old apartment, but I really can't until we get something firm. Susan, you asked how we'll decide what to keep. He'll be limited by the available space, which is smaller than his current living space, but he has lots of "tchotchkes". I thought my mother was the trinket collector, but it turns out that dad's almost as bad. I think they remind him of her. Anyway, he'll have to pare down some. He won't need much kitchen stuff since he won't be cooking. I'll keep the cast iron and I'll put the better stuff in a garage sale this summer. Furniture is the biggest thing to get rid of. I expect we'll be making trips to the goodwill.

Cooking has been unremarkable. Last night we had a spinach salad from the garden topped with some leftover strip steak and boiled eggs with a blue cheese dressing. Tonight is Italian sausage and pepper with homemade pappardelle and a cucumber salad for DH. Steamed artichoke hearts for me. Yay!

Oh, and as of Saturday we have a new granddog and guess what her name is? Olivia!

Susan, congratulations on your good numbers! Olivia is a beautiful baby.

AuntieNance, packing up the family house is always hard. Heck, I moved my dad out of my parents empty nest house, and it was stressful. They were there for fourteen years, and there were a lot of great memories with my parents and my sister. Best of luck for an easy move. I'm sure it's a huge relief to know that your father likes his future home.

    Special K, I hope you're feeling well.

    Minus, 6 MOHS? That's a lot! Mm...love a good bento box.

Tonight is leftover chicken cacciatore for my dad. He did pretty good last night with respect to eating. Not sure what I'm going to have, maybe a turkey and Swiss sandwich on a low carb wrap

hsant - serves me right for the MOHS. I was raised in sunny California, moved to New Mexico when I married where there are 364 days of sun every year, and then to Texas. Not to mention - there was no such thing as sun screen when I was younger & sun tan lotion was a pain. In fact as a teen, we slathered on baby oil and baked in the sun.

Nance - My parents had been in their home for 55 years when my Mother died. My Dad absolutely refused to move. I finally picked a place and had someone keep him busy while I moved some of the furniture in and got it arranged. When he got there at the end of the day he said, looks just like home. Whew - huge sigh!! But I agree, the little things that sparked my Dad's memories were not at all the things I would have thought.

I have a full-body skin exam and photographic mole mapping at the derm tomorrow morning.....took me 3 mo. to get the appt. A bit nervous, as I was a misguided sun-seeker in my youth (remember sun reflectors, baby oil & iodine?) and had several blistering sunburns. (Last one was while deep-sea fishing off Puerto Vallarta in ‘05--the salt spray as our boat sped at 60 kph washed off all my SPF 50). And my dad’s half-sister died of liver mets from melanoma (that’s the paleface side of my family: my sister got the olive skin, dark brown hair and almost-black eyes from my mom’s side; while I got the fair skin, light-ish hair--born blonde, didn’t turn brunette till age 8--and hazel eyes).

Storming out there to beat the band--and though I now have my car back, I’m not going out there. Saving the rest of the salmon for tomorrow’s dinner and ordering out for pizza.

Susan, wonderful news about the success of your treatment. And I second all the compliments for little Olivia. She looks so sweet and huggable.

Lacey, I cringed as I read your report about the destruction of mature, beautiful trees across from your property. I hate that kind of change and question the values of those behind the change.

SpecialK, I'm glad you are resting and taking it easy after your surgery.

We are in Mason City, Iowa, tonight after our second day of travel. We walked next door to a Pizza Hut for supper. I wasn't at all hungry but we ordered a thin crust pizza that tasted really good.

Tomorrow we hope to arrive at Pine Hollow Resort in northern MN and start settling in. I call my mother at night and have good conversations with her, getting a recap on her day. My youngest brother will be arriving from OK on Thurs. and will visit her during the weekend. She continues to work hard with the goal of going home.

Count me among the former sun worshippers who make regular trips to the dermatologist.

Oh, Carole--if you ever come to Chicago I’ll treat you to some of the best pizza (all styles) you’ll have ever eaten. I eat Pizza Butt or Papa John’s only as a last resort--if I’m starving in a motel room and nothing else is open to deliver at that hour.

SpecialK, did you say you have a bobcat and a panther around?

I had boiled shrimp and cocktail sauce along with Greek pasta salad, all from Central Market. Plus some leftover roasted garnet sweet potatoes. Sort of a random assortment, but all good.

Special, take the time that you need to heal. so important, and I think, hard for you to do absolutely nothing!

Carole, safe travels as you make your way North.

Minus, I really hope that a few people remember to thank you for all of your efforts with the neighborhood pool. This can be such a thankless job. And yes. Children [and their families] can be wildly self-centered and entitled. I have great hopes that my daughter will not choose this path for Olivia. She finds children without boundaries. One lives right next door in the condo..... and she really hates that!!! We shall see, eh?

Today, Mr. 02143 went to the poultry store and bought thighs and wings. And then, without my direction, he set up the dry-brine. When I got home from my Olivia-tending date, I made a few business calls, and then made some mayo, and then potato salad, and then some cole slaw vinegar dressing, and then the slaw. So we had two salads, and then he smoked and grilled those chicken pieces. The perfect dinner to celebrate the start of summer. And, we had the first iced tea of the season, made with mint from the garden! And speaking of the garden-- the tomato plants, basil, chives, parsley, peppers, and thyme are all in.

And now for my whine du jour. This is what happened to me yesterday. I mean really? this is acceptable at a world renowned cancer clinic? It was 85º today, and I had to wear a sweater to hide this while doing my Olivia-sitting out in public.

Nance, The odd thing is.... it didn't hurt while it was happening at all. I was SHOCKED when I pulled off the bandage and saw this. Oh well.... this is the life. The tech on Friday, who did the blood draw screwed up big time, so the only thing left was an off-side vein. I don't have another blood draw for 6 weeks which should be enough time for the blown vein to recover.

I agree, "OUCH". It looks like they messed up several times.

I have a "ghost chili" growing in a pot. Test daughter #2 gave me some of the seeds, which is why I started growing them. They are rated at 400+ times hotter than Tabasco sauce. Does anyone have any ideas for using them in the kitchen...besides as an oven cleaner?

    Susan, ouch.Olivia is adorable.

Im glad for all the good test results.I got one that's not that terrible but Im a bit upset. Well, you know me! If theres a weird complications, ill find it I had cataract sx last year and just went in for a checkup. Yep. An unusual thing in my right eye that cant be helped by the laser tx they thought would work. My eye sees kind of like before the cataract sx. Color changes and sight not as sharp - seems my eye doesn't like the lens and i have a sort of wrinkle in my eye liquid it makes it like a large floater, like a brown band across the field of vision. good news is it wont get worse. Even better news is it might break up a bita bit or move out of my field of vision. Sigh i just noticed the changes last week so this is new out of themillions of cataract patients, i had to be the one. Sigh at least it wont progress and its only one eye. Thats good, right? LOL!

TERIYAKI chicken tacos with pineapple and cucumber salsa yes, from Plated its good.

Yikes, Susan! Hope it gets yellow quickly, then disappears!

I, too, was of the baby oil/iodine generation....and always had June "blister back" after our first of the season foray onto the Jersey beaches. Yesterday, my derm doc let me know that my facial actinic kerotoses that are getting quite ugly, were a result of my years ago cavalier beaching. Since I was not dealing yet in cancers, I shared that it was worth it and she laughed, too. We'll see how long I sing that tune!

Carole, I'm glad your travel North is going well! Hope the trailer is without furry "interlopers" when you arrive. I bet it was a lot easier to get started for this trip! Wishing your mother speedy rehab so she can get home if that is what she can manage.

Nance, I do not envy the task ahead of you, so am glad that at least your dad is content about his new digs. You are such a good daughter!

Today, I rewrote my class social skills lesson on "emotions" for the K kids since I always have to abbreviate my already established lessons to fit into half the time for which I developed them. I sort of feel like I am machine gunning info at the kids. Oh well, I have to remind myself that at keast they are getting "something".

Tonight we chair shopped again, and actually found one to fit the bill. DH loves it! So in a week we can get rid of the striped monster he has been attached to for several years. Coincidentally, a neighbor sent us and a few others an email that they rented a dumpster, which we dan help them fill up! If chairs are dumpster allowable, this one is going there!

After our chair purchasing trip, we came home and ate an assortment of leftovers and some popcorn. OK ...last of the ratatouille, last of the spaghetti squash/kale, some raw cauliflower and hummus, some crusty bread with cherry preserves (really!), and dessert of popcorn. What a "meal"! LOL

IPAD going dead, so submitting without proofing....

Eric, hope you were nowhere near the shootings today!

I was also a serious tanorexic back in the day. My mother's secret to the perfect bronze color was a mixture of olive oil and iodine. I would sit for hours in the summer baking like a chicken. I also used one of those sun reflectors. Oy.

Minus, don't beat yourself up. This was before the connection between sun damage and skin cancer was known, kind of similar to smoking in the 50s. Why is it that the most enjoyable activities (I quit smoking 8 years ago) are the worst for you? Where in CA did you grow up? My husbands family moved to Galveston from Italy when he was 16. DH went to Rice, and loved it. Houston is a great city.

Susan, yikes! The phlebotomist that drew your blood last week needs to go back to school

Not sure what I'll make for dinner tonight. Maybe turkey shepherd's pie or poached salmon. I'll see what appeals to my dad.

Hsant - I grew up in Palo Alto before there was such a thing as Silicon Valley. Those hills & valleys were covered with cows. We have some interesting parallels. My son went to Rice. I quit smoking 9 years ago.

Used the 'spiralizer' for the first time last night and made a ton of zucchini noodles. I steamed them lightly & added butter & salt. Yum. After my big Japanese lunch, that's all I ate.

I love all the cute babies, I want to hug them! :-)

OUCH Susan, I agree, they need more schooling! :-(

What a beautiful kitty Pris is and the flowers! I have to admit I noticed Pris first :-)

My mom and I are sitting at her dermatologist now. She has 2 different types of skin cancer on her face and having the worst spot removed. I'm hoping they get it all on the first try. I'm also one of the tanners. I just got my tan from all the horseback riding in a bathing suit I did as a kid. Which was for hours everyday! My sister never tanned, she'd burn then back to white again. All I have to do is step out the door and I get an instant tan. I had my school believing I was half Indian and adopted! They called my mom to get my medical history! Mom asked what I was thinking? I asked her what were the teachers thinking? Their the adults! Mom and I laugh about it still to this day.

I'm not sure what's for dinner yet, probably leftovers.

I hope everyone has a great day!

Just came back from my dermo today--during my routine screening mole-mapping, she found a colorless possible basal or squamous lesion (but she says probably just a seborrheic hyperplasia) on my lower R temple and a probable dysplastic nevus (possible melanoma--highly irregular and asymmetric, variegated pale-tan-and-golden-brown splotch) on my back. She sampled the face lesion (and removed the oil gland) and removed the entire back mole for biopsy. Gotta keep both locations dry for 24 hrs--so will have to “wash” my face with cleansing wipes and the rest of me by sponge-bathing (I’m not that accurate with my handheld shower).

Gotta cook the rest of that salmon--and it looks like grilling weather--so I will saute some ramps and peppers to go with it.

Must be derm week. I just got home from a 6 week call back after my regular 6 month full body check. She wanted to check & re-freeze or biopsy several places on my face. Of course she also found several new pre-cancerour lesions. Luckily no biopsies today. Just 12 more frozen places.

Olivia is so adorable......so sweet, you can almost smell that baby powder sweetness.....

Susan so glad your TX is working and I hate the site of your blown vein, I'd wear whatever and dare anybody to say a word.......

Yesterday my left shoe flet too tight. Today my foot is hurting so bad I can hardly walk, so I go the walk in clinic around 1pm and wait my turn, see the doctor, who sends me to radiology, where everyone has gone into a meeting at the same time and patients are stacking up but I am 1 on the list. Some left, but since I had paid my co pay for doc on call, I couldn't just leave. At 4pm he says he doesn't see any cracks, fractures, gout or spur along the outside edge, but the radiologist will read it tomorrow and let me know. I n the meantime, ice, elevate and a steroid since I am allergic to anti-inflams.........I don't have time for this.

So I met a friend for dinner and had grilled salmon , baked potato, garlic green beans and a small hot fudge sundae. Feeling good except for the foot.....HA... My pal looked at me after she ordered water and said YOUR NOT DRINKING?????....why do my friends make me feel like an alkie---I only gave one drink usually when we dine out about every month .or two......They don't know what they are missing........

Everyone have a glorious long weekend and don't forget to thank a vet.

Minus, northern CA is beautiful. Rice is a small university. That is a coincidence. Wishing you the best for clean results at the dermo!

I found a roasted tomato soup recipe on this thread from a member who goes by the username, seasidememories. This was posted early on when this thread was first created. I'm going to make this for dinner and grilled Brie sandwiches. Here's the recipe for anyone interested.

    Roasted Tomato Soup
    Ingredients
    • 2 1/2 pounds fresh tomatoes (mix of fresh heirlooms, cherry, vine and plum tomatoes) - I used about 6 romas and 1 1/2 pints of grape tomatoes that I had to use up
    • 3-4 cloves garlic, peeled
    • 1 Large yellow onion, sliced into thick (1/4 -1/2 inch or so) slices and NOT separated into rings
    • 1/4 - 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
    • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
    • 1 quart chicken stock (split use)
    • 2 bay leaves
    • 4 tablespoons butter
    • 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil leaves, optional - I did not use but, have in the past
    • 3/4 cup heavy cream, optional (I usually use 1/2 and 1/2 but, milk would work, too)
    • Prepared Horseradish, optional
    Directions
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
Wash and cut the larger tomatoes into halves. Any of the smaller tomatoes like, cherry or grape, can be left whole. Put the tomatoes in a large storage bag or bowl and add some the olive oil and toss to coat. Spread the tomatoes out onto a baking tray lined with foil. Repeat with the onion slices and garlic cloves taking care that the onions don't fall apart. You want to keep the slices whole and not individual rings, if you can, because they will burn if separated. I usually use a separate pan for the onions and garlic because they are usually done before the tomatoes and you don't want them to burn. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast for 20 to 30 minutes, or until caramelized.
Remove roasted tomatoes, garlic and onion from the oven and transfer to a large stock pot . Add 3/4 of the chicken stock, bay leaves, and butter. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes or until liquid has reduced by a third. (I don't worry about how much it has reduced, I just give it 20 minutes).
Wash and dry basil leaves, if using, and add to the pot. REMOVE the bay leaves (I forgot this step once). Use an immersion blender to puree the soup until smooth. Return soup to low heat, add cream and adjust consistency with remaining chicken stock, if necessary. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
If the soup still needs a little something, add a bit of the prepared horseradish. Not enough to make it spicy but, just enough to give it a little zing.
    • Edited: to add the part about the horseradish

Sweet, hsant! I remember seaside memories well. Nice to see her soup recipe again.

Last night I came home late after a marathon clothes shopping event at my favorite store that gives seniors a discount on Thursdays in addition to their already great prices. So I should be set for summer except that my dresses are all a bit snug, which Is not the way I wear clothes. Ugh.

So I will take the least snug one to wear to dinner tonight to meet the parents of DS2's DGF. Guess I won't be eating much! ;)

When I returned home last night, Dh had grilled the chicken I left and actually made a salad, so I enjoyed them around 9PM!

DGF's father is retired military, so I will be sure to thank him for his service!

Have a good long weekend all. We will head up to the lake in the AM in time to make the neighborhood association meeting, and probably stay into Tuesday.

Another Friday has arrived! My mother is back down following some meetings in southern NH to visit her great-grandchild. She is clearly finding reasons to be "close" by so she can watch this child grow up. Tonight, after her Olivia-fix, she will come here. I am grilling [well the meat whisperer will do the grilling] lamb chops and I will be making some Saffron rice and steamed asparagus. Again, local asparagus, so a true treat. Depending on how much my mother purchased at the farm, I might make a green salad as well.

My mother knew as early as 1955 that sun caused skin damage that was dangerous. How she knew? I have no idea. We were NEVER allowed to be out in the sun between 11 and 2pm. We were never allowed to play outside without sun screen. I had exactly one burn during my childhood, and I can assure you, as the daughter of a red head, I never had a tan. Even so, I had to have something removed back in college, but nothing since. I hated that my mother didn't allow us to have the baby oil and mirrors and all the stuff that everyone.else.in.the.world had, but now I am grateful.

Lacey, good luck with the other parental units tonight. I bet you will look great even if you feel a little snug. Where are you going to eat? [I am assuming that the kids aren't cooking.]

Special, how is your infection/allergies/surgery recovery coming along? Think of you often.... and still really hope that your career as a frequent flier surgical patient is coming to an end.

Minus, how special that your Japanese place was still good after 10 years. I haven't gotten back to the one here. I understand that there is now a very long wait for a table at both lunch and dinner.

Hsant [boy does spell-correct think that is a problem] How is the soup? I have made more different tomato soups and none of them have made me happy. Funny that something that should be so easy is a mystery.

Red, any relief for your feet?

Mother has arrived.... time to make her the center of attention!
