Just Diagnosed

I was just this week diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma. I learned the type is estrogen+ and her2+. I'm scared.

    Hello Karenjsf,

Just wanted to let you know I am sending you bundles of positive vibes!

  • I was diagnosed with right sided Invasive Lobular Carcinoma, Lobular Carcinoma in Situ ER+(90%)/PR+(30%) HER2- (FISH), Grade 2, 6cm in January 2025. I am 51 years old with no history of breast cancer in my family. I have extremely dense tissue and this cancer was detected on an US as part of my yearly. The process of testing and diagnosis feels like it's taking forever. My mammogram was 12/27/24. I will have my 1st surgical consult on 2/20/25. I'm trying to not let my brain run away with negative thoughts, but it has been hard. I've been doing a lot of research so I can be an active participant in discussion with my surgeon. I'm glad to have this resource at my fingertips.

Since my initial post, I have met with breast surgeon and plastics. I’m scheduled for right side mastectomy with sentinel lymph node biopsy on 4/9/2025. I will be having immediate reconstruction using an implant. I was not a candidate for a flap procedure. I’m feeling good about my plan and am hopeful the lymph node will come back clean.

I hope you feel better now that you have a plan. Having a plan made me feel a lot better & a little more in control. There are some great posts on here about things you may want to have after a mastectomy, etc. those were very helpful to me.

@ann5631 @moderators Yes, I feel more at ease with the whole process. I’m still nervous, but it all feels “doable.” Thanks for the post on surgery prep and items to have at the ready!

I just had a lumpectomy last week and waiting for the tumor analysis - Oncotype score. I am nervous. Both of my sisters have had BC same type as mine - IDC ER + and PR + HER- but because of one sister’s tumor size being too small and the other’s too long ago, they didn’t get an Oncotype done. They had radiation and AI. They are fine years later. Hoping for the same but scared about that number coming back high.

The type you’ve been diagnosed with, ER+ and HER2+, actually has really effective treatments now. That combo used to be more aggressive, but with targeted therapies like Herceptin (trastuzumab) and hormone blockers, outcomes have improved a lot in the last decade
