Today's meal was spaghetti & meatballs with lots of sauteed mushrooms and Rao's Marinara of course. Treating myself tonight with Kavanaugh's Salted Carmel Irish Cream from Total Wine. A really smooth sipping drink with a little more 'character' than Bailey's.

    Special - I agree. Fun father/daughter trip.

    Hi to everyone else.

It rained here off & on - which we really needed. Unfortunately only one inch. But it took the temperature down from 91 yesterday to 80 today. (thinking about Eric having snow!!!) Dexa scan and Prolia #18 tomorrow. Then to the pulmonologist for yearly breathing tests. The pollen has been horrible this year but fortunately the congestion has stayed in my head & sinuses and didn't impact my lungs (yet… fingers crossed).

Went to Miru in the St. Regis hotel for Easter brunch—it was one of the last Sunday brunch buffets in Chicago post-COVID, and only on holidays at that. There was a sushi & seafood station with oysters, lobster cocktail, scallop seviche, crab salad and shrimp, plus the usual omelet and carving (leg of lamb) stations and a decadent sweet table. We've already booked it for Mother's Day, early enough to take the kids and still get Gordy back in time for work (swing shift). Last night we went to EJ's Place up in N. Skokie, an old-style supper-club steakhouse. Meh. Salad was chopped iceberg. Soup was cream of carrot (two words that should never be in the same sentence). Bob ordered his usual filet and I the special bone-in KC strip, both medium rare. His was, but mine was definitely medium. At those prices, I'm entitled to get exactly what I ordered—so they apologized and said the KCs were gone and offered me a NY strip. This time it was cooked properly, but butchered poorly—loaded with gristle (brutal to chew). Not just that, but the steak knives were cheap & flimsy (worse than the set that came in this glorified AirBnB) and I swear that cutting my steak was as good a bicep workout as I ever had at a gym. The steamed broccoli was utterly unseasoned—these places seem to cater to seniors on no-sodium diets. The "cottage fries" were actually housemade thick potato chips, and the redeeming feature of the meal. Had the leftovers tonight (actually half of my half of my steak, which I sliced before heating), and you bet I turned that salt mill loose on the broccoli. Did make a tomato-basil salad with a perfectly ripe heirloom and basil from my windowsill plant. Tomorrow will be a surf & turf with the remaining steak and some seared sable (black cod).

Restoration construction is proceeding very slowly—looks like we may be stuck here into the summer. More about that in the "Older than 60" thread.

Minus, I hope the pollen congestion stays out of your lungs. More rain would decrease the pollen.

Sandy, Your Easter brunch sounds delicious. I’m sorry your restoration is proceeding so slowly but that seems par for the course.

Dinner tonight was meatballs in Rao’s on spaghetti (thanks for the idea, Minus.)

Since I spent the day at the Medical Center for various appointments & tests, I was able to have one of my favorite meals - a California Club sandwich in one of the cafes. Almost 4" thick - turkey, provolone, avocado, tomato, lettuce on delicious multi grain bread. I ate half between appointments and brought half home for tomorrow. Now at 9pm after my evening meeting with the police dept., I have to figure out what snack might work. I'd rather have nuts, but the salt this late at night certainly causes swelling. Maybe some tapioca pudding?

Minus, That California Club sounds yummy. Getting two good meals must lessen the sting of having to spend the day at the Medical Center. Today I had to wait three hours in one of those phlebotomy cubicles until the IV nurse came in to work. I asked to leave and return but since they had already unsuccessfully tried to get blood I was told I was mid-procedure and had to stay. They served me juice and crackers and I read my book but I missed the library book sale day when you can rifle through the books.

A Viking cruise ad on TV made me think of Carole and Reader. I hope they’re having a great time on their different rivers.

Dinner tonight was meatloaf, cauliflower and mashed potatoes.

Ran into a bit of a stand-off traffic jam on my way home from a trip to town this morning, lol

@illimae wow amazing lol. ❤️ And being a city gal, hard to get my mind around what kind of neighbors they must be like. Looks beautiful.

Spent the morning cooking, felt like a hard boiled egg with vegies. So made a vegie stir fry and steamed asparagus and potatoes. Will make a pasta bake with broccoli later. Going to try out a recipe with nutritional yeast, a vegan Mac and cheese. So busy at work, trying to cook for the week in advance.

Dreaming of vacations floating on a river sounds heavenly.

'Mae…that made me smile… Those mules are really packed in there. I hope they didn't string you along too much. I guess it did bray(ke) up the trip a bit. :-)

Here, it's cattle wandering along the dirt roads.

Illimae, Great photo! Are those burros wild? That’s my kind of traffic jam. I’m more used to meeting sheep (Ireland and Scotland) and cattle (Arkansas.)

Rhonda, I admire how organized you are, cooking in advance for the week. The best I ever did was find a collection of recipes that could be made in 30 - 45 minutes total.

Dinner tonight was creamy chicken with spinach, mushrooms and sun dried tomatoes.

The donkeys are wild and fortunately don’t come up to my property, I’m on top of that mountain ridge in the background but I enjoy seeing them down below. Javelina and wild turkeys are also common. We had a black bear up here a few years ago and spotted a young bull elk and mountain lion on trail cams. Pretty cool for a city girl but I’ve learned to be very cautious.

    Dinner was hot dogs.

That road looks a lot like "ours".

Dinner was a home made (by Sharon) pizza.

Great Pyrenees dogs bark at perceived threats before moving up to more aggressive responses. Things like the shifting of wind across the country get a bark. Wind doing anything closer gets a more aggressive bark. The wind last night was in the 50mph/80kph range. Daisy is a Pyrenees-Golden Retriever mix. We kept being awakened. :-)

I got the load of composted garden soil delivered yesterday. I'm having to go out and spray it with water to keep it from blowing away. Now I have to shovel it into place and till it into the ground. It's 12 yards. which is about like 250 large bags of soil sold at the hardware store. A few more seeds have sprouted. I think I'll have the garden about 2/3 full now, so I won't need to buy as many starts from the garden nursery.

I just found out that the local library used book sale ended yesterday….:-( I guess that's my penalty for not reading the local newspaper soon enough.

Illimae, What a view you must have! I've never had to worry about javelinas, elk or gators but have had all kinds of other wild animals show up. In TN a mountain lion appeared one evening as I was unloading horse feed but just looked at me and kept going as I jumped into the truck.

Eric, Great Pyrenees are the best guard dogs for sheep. I'm glad Daisy is keeping you safe. It sounds like your garden is ready to grow. I can only manage half an hour at a time in the yard now so I just try to keep things from being overrun.

Dinner tonight was chicken meatloaf cockaigne, asparagus and mashed potatoes.

Love the wild burros, Mae. Oh my Eric, you are REALLY ambitious.

Saturday I went to stay with a friend in Conroe (a city one hour to the North). She had purchased tickets to "The Best of Broadway" by the Conroe Symphony with guest Broadway Star Sal Viviano. Great songs from hit musicals produced from the 1930s to the 1990s. I challenged myself and remembered most of the words to all but a few.

Dinner was at a delicious small, family owned, Italian restaurant. The garlic butter rolls were larger than softballs - warm & fragrant. I indulged and had two so I was almost too full to eat the angel hair pasta with shrimp & spinach. This friend bakes regularly so for breakfast the next morning we had warm banana nut muffins and small date/prune muffins made with All Bran & brown sugar. I'll have to get her recipe.

Last night I just had a big green salad with Blue Cheese dressing and an English muffin.

m0mmy, Good to see you. How are your building plans coming along?

Minus, It sounds like a good show and a wonderful dinner out. Please post the muffin recipe when you get it.

Dinner tonight was pizza for DH and apple juice for me. I’m having thyroid surgery at 5:30 am tomorrow so only clear liquids from 3:00 pm till 3:00 am. I’m not having general anesthesia but I guess there’s always the possibility.

Maggie, hope the surgery goes well.

I've had hot dogs and beans with brussels sprouts for the last 3 days. I'm making meatloaf tonight. Gonna try the old fashioned quaker oat recipe.

DH's PSA is coming down since the Pluvicto, but kidneys are a watch. Dread the next treatment in May…4 days apart, blah, blah…and the schlep to Edmonds and back.

LOVED the burros! We have had exciting animal sightings here too…coyotes, couger, black bear, fox, little black squirrels, little red squirrels possum, and my favorite, California Quail!

@maggie15 thinking of you, hope all went well. Sending love and light❤️

@wallycat glad DH PSA is coming down! That’s good news. Wishing you well for the treatment and travel.. schlepping is never fun.

@minus looking forward to the muffin recipe too.

Splurged and went to our local fishmonger and bought Halibut and fresh jumbo shrimp. Pricey but oh my .. so yummy. Simple garlic butter and and olive oil with paprika for the shrimp pan seared, and roasted the halibut same seasoning with salt and pepper on a bed of lentils. We opened a bottle of Cabernet we had as a gift, celebrating the end of my radiation treatments. Yeah !

Wally, It’s good that the Pluvicto seems to be working but I don’t blame you for dreading the upheaval each dose causes.

Rhonda, Congratulations on finishing the radiation treatments. The shrimp and halibut meal sounds like a delicious celebration.

Thanks for the good wishes. It was thyroid surgery #3 in seven years, this one courtesy of membership in the rare rads SE club. To avoid intubation they did radiofrequency ablation which was more like an hour long biopsy. I have the same sore throat, swelling and crackly voice but no drain or slasher scar. It’s an easier surgery than many.

Dinner tonight was leftover pizza for DH. When the surgeon told me I was a tough cookie I wondered about having a chocolate chip one. She said no but suggested cookie dough ice cream for dinner; I took her advice.

Oh Maggie - that sounds like a major issue. I agree with the surgeon - you are tough!!!

Dinner was tuna salad on toasted sourdough bread.

Dinner will probably be something quick tonight.

Been having to bungee cord the lid of our trash bin down as the bears are coming out of hibernation here. There was one spotted about a mile from me and a couple of weeks ago two were spotted near the roundabout that leads to the nearest bridge.

The "award winning" meatloaf recipe is NOT. Super easy to make, minimal ingredients…I should have known it would not be a wow. Still, what is not to love about ground beef, LOL. Leftover meatloaf tonight.

Maggie, I'm glad you were able to "just" do the ablation…agree, sounds very un-fun. I hope that will be the end of your need for further stuff down the road…but we know how that goes.

My ex-DH treated to lunch today. We both love Pappadeaux's fried shrimp but even the lunch order is WAY too much food. Today we experimented each ordering a small side salad and one order of shrimp & fries to split. Delicious but we both agreed - still too much food. And that's without eating any of their good bread.

  • maggie15
    maggie15 Posts: 2,177

Wally, Is that the meatloaf made with oatmeal and tomato juice? I tried it once and it was very bland. I don’t think anyone really gave it an award. You can always cover it with gravy, ketchup, salsa or chili sauce to make it edible.

m0mmy, We have a black bear who “sunbathes” in our yard. We keep the trash cans in the garage until the morning of the scheduled pickup.

Minus, That order of fried shrimp must be huge if it’s too much for two people. I’ve heard that you can reheat fried shrimp successfully in an air fryer but that’s an appliance I don’t have room for.

Dinner tonight was a small steak for DH and yogurt with puréed raspberries for me (along with cookie dough ice cream.)

Yes, Maggie, that's the one. Not horrible, but bland is a good word for it. I used sriracha ketchup and DH used bbq sauce…same for tonight. I'll marinate some chicken thighs and have those for tomorrow. Just need some sides.
