    Caprese salad tonight.

The bathroom has taken three times longer than anticipated. I'm having regrets about the whole thing.

In spite of disruptions dinner tonight is oven bbqd pork steaks, a very pretty pasta salad with Farfalle and a deliciously sweet cantaloupe.

Nance - unfortunately bathrooms & kitchens are the most disrupting renovations. But I bet you'll be happy with the results.

The latest interesting salad I heard about has roasted chickpeas. A good source of protein.

Egg salad is gone - served on Hawaiian Rolls. Supper tonight is the leftover Costco shrimp from the freezer. Maybe I should add some rice for the shrimp? But I do have potato salad to finish up??

Nance, The end result will most likely be worth the disruption. The delicious sounding dinner should help you cope.

Wally, Hopefully the fish will bite and the weather will be good.

Minus, Shrimp tastes good with everything.

Dinner tonight was salmon in creamy cheese sauce with sun-dried tomatoes on cavatappi.

Wally - looking forward to a fishing report.

I ended up serving the leftover shrimp on StoveTop Stuffing. A total cop out, but quite good.

Also looking forward to a fishing report.

Dinner last night was a frozen pizza. Not a very satisfactory substitute for a home-made pizza.

Sharon is on the way to Detroit with MIL's car to give to DD, so I'm "just me and the dogs" until she arrives on the train the evening of Aug 11. She's taking a train from Detroit to Chicago where she'll board the Southwestern Chief to Winslow, Arizona. She's EXCITED!!!

eric - Great fun for Sharon. I've always wanted to do a cross-country train trip. When I was a kid we used to take the gorgeous Feather River Route from CA to Utah. So far my longest train trip was on the original Canadian Pacific from Vancouver to Lake Louise & Banff. Wonderful memories.

Eric, Sharon’s train trip sounds exciting. I like traveling by train since they often traverse parts of the countryside that are not built up.

Dinner tonight was chicken in spinach and mushroom sauce on farfalle.

I'm going to send that image to Sharon. :-)

For what it's worth, Winslow has a red flat bed Ford parked on Main Street (also US Hwy 66).

According to some accounts, the "standing on the corner" actually happened in Flagstaff, but Winslow worked out better for the song lyrics.

Here's the 'Standin On The Corner' that I remember - 1956. Anyone one else?

DH and I took a train from south Louisiana, where we live, to Chicago to visit his parents many years ago instead of driving. We didn't have accommodations with a bed for sleeping. It was a miserable experience. Trains seem to be routed through the unattractive parts of towns and cities, and the ride was very rough and bumpy. I hope Sharon's experience is more enjoyable.

We probably chose the train journey as a cheaper mode. I don't remember why we took the train.

Dinner last night was the menu for "I can't think of anything to cook" nights. Steak and potato. DH cooked a ribeye on the grill and I boiled little new potatoes and set out the butter and sour cream. Ta dah!

Tonight we're back to meatloaf Monday at Clancy's.

Sharon is going "coach" from Detroit to Chicago and has a "roomette" from Chicago to Winslow. I was 5 years old when I took the train from Barstow, CA to Akron, OH. We switched trains in Chicago and went from a sleep car to a coach for the 6 hours to Akron. The part to Chicago was great, but the part to Akron was "blah" as I remember. The same experience repeated itself on the way home…Akron to Chicago "blah", Chicago to Barstow, great.

My 2nd most memorable event on that trip was seeing the tracks when one flushed the toilet….yes…it just dumped out onto the tracks.

The most memorable part was when we crossed the Colorado River. I was in the observation car. Where I grew up, "city water" was apparently expensive and I'd get into trouble if I left the water hose turned on. I saw the river and, "Mom. Someone's going to be in trouble. They left the hose on."

Both were 64 years ago and I clearly remember them.

Last night was "beans and chicken". Tonight I'm planning on fixing some spaghetti and using the leftover spaghetti sauce. Some sourdough garlic bread will round out the "event".

Last night Sharon was in Dalhart, TX, about 500 miles from home.

I need to take the flag down…45-50mph winds just started and it's really bending the flag pole as well as "thrashing" the flag.

DH and I are heading to the dentist for his bi-weekly visit. Off antibiotics and hopeful nothing icky discovered.

DH and I took the amtrak from WI to Washington state…I'm with Carole, it was hard to sleep in and not easy to get to a potty in the night…when I hear train travel, I want to envision The Orient Express 😍. I hope Sharon's experience will be good.

No fish and no dinner plans. Maybe a frozen burger or frozen pizza….hope to get fishing in this week. Yesterday, we ended up coming home because the parking lot was full. tourists plus weekends = too many people.

In 1987 DH and I took the train to New Orleans. I remember the year because it was when Pope John Paul was coming to NOLA and the train was full of excited young Catholics traveling there to see him. It was an interesting trip but not one I'd repeat, at least not in coach. The train was freezing cold, made a million stops and was uncomfortable to try and sleep. By the time we got to our hotel we were tired and cranky. We agreed that if we were to make such a trip again we'd spring for a roomette.

DH's father was a Pullman conductor so he has many fond memories of the train. Things were quite different back then with things like dining cars and service.

The shower is finally done and is awesome but the dust left behind was not. The cleaners came in today and took care of business. My back Is especially bad today so it's a good thing. Dinner tonight is minimal effort — Farfalle with broccoli in the remains of a jar of Alfredo and a bit of leftover marinara. Easy peasey.

May the force be with you tomorrow wally.

Train journies in Europe have been more scenic and eventful. Once we boarded a train from Bologna, final destination Rome, with tickets to Florence. It turned out that we got on an express train which was an hour late; our limited express train was at the same platform right behind it. DH quipped in Italian that he never should have thrown a coin in the Trevi fountain. Everyone was in a good mood since one’s ticket cost is refunded if the train is an hour or more behind schedule. People moved around to make room for us. I ended out playing whist with three guys looking for a fourth player. We exchanged our tickets for ones from Rome to Florence (the conductor let us ride for free) and travelled back north after spending an hour at the Rome railway station.

    Nance, Enjoy your new shower.

Eric, I hope you don’t get blown away.

Wally, Hopefully the dental appointment and the next fishing attempt go well.

Minus, I remember hearing the Four Lads song but prefer the Eagles’ “Take it Easy.”

Illimae, That meatloaf dinner looks scrumptious.

    Dinner tonight was homemade pizza.

Maggie nudged my memory. We travelled across four European countries using first class Eurail passes many years ago. We were in our 40's. On one train in France, we dined in a dining car. Speaking very little French, we ended up ordering rabbit. It was quite an elegant meal, and we enjoyed the experience. Most of the trains were much smoother than US trains, as I recall. Some trains did not have first class so we rode whatever class was available. Always daytime travel.

Dinner last night was at Clancy's. We drove the golf cart instead of the truck because parking is limited. As it turned out, there were parking places. DH had his meatloaf meal and I had the five chunks of walleye and fries minus the fries. I had a house salad instead. I weighed at the gym yesterday and the number said, "No fries."

We have leftovers and some fresh green beans to cook for tonight.

I had to smile at the Italian train delay. Japanese trains…I've never had one be late…to the second.

    Carole…drooling over your walleye.

    Frozen pizza leftovers tonight.
Dentist appt. was so-so…no antibiotics at this time, but watching….DH's labs on Thursday….🤢

Carole, I ate all kinds of food in France. The only thing that bothered me were meatballs at the Sorbonne dining hall that tasted like nothing I had ever eaten before. They could have been horse meat.

Wally, Students from Japan were behind us in line at Termini as we waited to exchange our tickets. They were appalled at the administrative inefficiencies but liked the trains, their speed and how well they covered the country. Good news that no antibiotics are needed right now. Hopefully your DH’s labs will be good.

    Dinner tonight was leftover pizza.

Maggie, I've had horsemeat in Paris and LOVED it. Better than beef, IMHO.

Just got home from fishing….no fish but 2 large Orca swam feet from the beach. We've never seen them this close. Hope they are OK. Quite a sight.

  • minustwo
    minustwo Posts: 13,788

OMG - Orca right next to the beach??? They no doubt scared the fish away. Or ate them all.

Dinner was sauteed onions & mushrooms with a hamburger steak & some gravy. Bob Evans mashed potatoes for the side.

Neighbor Mary has huge green tomatoes on two tomato plants. She decided to pick some of the green tomatoes and relieve the plants to produce more tomatoes. Strange gardening logic. Anyway, I took two of the green tomatoes and cooked fried green tomato slices as a part of our dinner last night. Bottled thousand island dressing for a sauce. Heated leftovers filled the plate.

Wally, how exciting to see Orcas close up. I agree with Minus. They probably scared off the fish.

The only orcas I've seen were at Vancouver aquarium. I would be so thrilled to see one so close to a beach (or anywhere unconfined.)

Yesterday was a Costco run. Exhausting trip but resulted in tonight's dinner of meatloaf, mashed potatoes and peas. Oh and gravy. Always gravy.

Wally, How cool to see the Orca. Minus made a good point about them scaring away the fish.

Carole, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe is what your post brings to mind. I like to eat them, too.

Nance, That dinner is definitely worth an exhausting shopping trip.

Dinner tonight was Angus strip steak, corn on the cob and potato salad.

We had chicken Cesar salad, dessert was pudding. Keeping lite tonight but planning on spinach lasagna tomorrow.
