Deciding on what type of reconstruction

I will be having a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction on Nov 6 on Long Island,ny. My surgeon’s will be Dr Hodyl and Dr ott young. I have a new primary cancer on my right breast. Idc hr+her- (same as last time 10 years ago) I previously had lumpectomy and radiation and tamoxifen. My oncotype score was 10. I have not decided on implants vs diep flap yet. I know the recovery for diep is more intense. Any experienced to share and why you went either one or the other?

Has the PS discussed effects of previous radiation on your skin and how it might impact reconstruction? That’s something to consider. Some have had success with implants after radiation and others are not so lucky.
I didn’t have success. I did try implants first and even had LD flap (wouldn’t recommend). I had to have DIEP if I wanted to have successful reconstruction. I am very happy with the results.
I highly recommend a discussion with your PS about skin integrity after radiation.
