Newly diagnosed Stage IV

I just got my diagnosis after PET scan and my bc has metastasized to my sacrum, lower spine and ribs. The gave me tamoxifen for cancer and Dilaudid for my intense pain. No chemo, no radiation…just a pill. I had anyone had this? First it’s been 7 years since I had lumpectomy, 5 years off of Arimidex, and this took me by surprise because I didn’t know it could go to other areas of the body. I’m not even sure if I am posting in right area. Thank you patient moderators. Abit freaked out but grateful at this time all I have to do is take a pill, and super grateful for pain relief and hope it gets better. ❤️

@xsuzx — we’re so sorry you’re going through this. The pain you’re describing is, unfortunately, something we do hear from others in similar situations — you are not alone. We replied to you in your other thread as well, but wanted to make sure you saw this here.

Have you had the chance to speak with a palliative-care or pain-management specialist? They focus specifically on managing symptoms and improving comfort, and many members find that really helpful. It may also be worth talking with your doctor about additional options for pain relief, including whether radiation to painful areas might be considered.

If you’re interested, we’d love to have you join one of our Zoom support groups for people living with metastatic breast cancer. They’re a very understanding, compassionate space, and many find comfort in connecting with others who “get it.”

Please keep reaching out — you don’t have to navigate this alone, and we’re here for you. 💗

Thank you for you help and support.

  • I hope you continue to find some relief along your path. May I ask, what led you to your PET scan of your sacrum and lower spine? You're the first person I've heard mention this.

I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease shortly before the breast cancer diagnosis, and maybe the first 6 months after chemo my back felt a little better, or at least generally manageable. But over the last few months it seems worse. I wanna blame it on the weight I put back on, but I don't wanna ignore any signs.

    Thank you for any input.

Ejohnnie..i was in debilitating pain all of a sudden, in my lower back area, especially left side.,although I had what I thought were bruised ribs from reaching too far. I ended up at my primary for pain pills and shots. Nothing worked, and I wasn’t even thinking it had anything to do with my breast cancer which hadn’t bothered me for 8 years. She suggested MRI and when results came back, they saw “something “ and my oncologist called as I had records sent to him, and he told me I needed PET scan. Which is how they found my breast cancer had metastasized to my back and sacrum. He gave me stronger pain meds, and started me on Tamoxifen a week ago, and I go see a pain specialist and have consultation with radiologist day after Christmas. Hoping tamoxifen, radiation stops pain and kills cancer. Have never had radiation before. Wishing you the best.
