  • hi there - I'm chiming in to relay that I've had a really positive experience with surgical treatment of my secondary upper (right arm) extremity lymphedema, which I developed about 3 years after my mastechtomy and axial node dissection (they took 12 lymph nodes under arm).

I've had liposuction/debulking (July 2025) followed by VOLT (Vascular Omentum LymphNode Transfer (April 2026) — all of my surgical procedures and care have been at Stanford Lymphedema Surgery Clinic (https://stanfordhealthcare.org/medical-clinics/lymphedema-surgery-center.html ) in Palo Alto & San Jose, CA.

It took my nearly 3 years to get through these surgeries, from diagnostics, to insurance coverage, and finally the actual lymph node transfer.

Lymphedema was really ruining my quality of life, and all the physical therapy and manual decongestant therapies had little to nil effect. SO far surgery has been the only thing that has brought lasting relief. It is a long and tough road though.

Another recently available surgical center for lymphedema is at UCSF (San Francisco): https://plasticsurgery.ucsf.edu/lymphedema-program.
