Glad you've found this thread, @bmatthews β we just posted on your other post, but this is a great place to help alleviate your fears! Keep in mind all of these clearances are done to make sure you'rea good candidate for surgery - so getting the clearance itself, while anxiety-producing, should give you some assurance that the experts are confident you'll be just fine. Have some faith in that!
We've got you!0 -
I have a question. My unilateral mastectomy ( no reconstruction) is Sept. 23. I am booked for a bone density scan and an abdominal ultrasound on Set. 29. Will I be able to have these tests? My husband would be driving me so that part is not an issue.

@mmk21995 I hope you are recovering well!
@ninacon I hope your surgery goes really well!
@jaspercat I think the ultrasound would be ok. I have never had a DEXA so I'm not sure what is involved? If they can wait, I would suggest waiting....but if it would be too difficult to reschedule, show up and bring a snack and post-op medications with you!
I am now at post-op day 12. My only pain meds now are ibuprofen and acetaminophen. I have tissue expanders in place and they feel like a metal plate that is getting cranked down. Drains are out...last one came out yesterday! I am very tired....can't really sleep but also have no energy to do anything. Feeling kinda blah.
Hope you all are ok!

@bmatthews how are you holding up? Sending you a virtual hug! I also thought about not waking up from surgery....I think that is pretty normal. Talk to your people and let them know you are scared....and lean on them! We also got you here in this group.
What day is surgery?

Thanks for your words. My surgery is Thursday. Supposed to be routine is what they say but itβs anything but routine to me. Thereβs nothing routine about being put to sleep. Iβve done well so far. Diagnosed back in July. Itβs been no big deal until these last few days. Im having a lumpectomy with follow up radiation. It just became real to me and I am beyond scared.

@bmatthews I am also having deep anxiety over my upcoming surgery. Maybe it is just our brains coping with this enormous loss. I don't know if I personally worry so much about not waking up, but of having a part of me I love dearly, amputated. Not being able to focus is the anxiety. In my opinion,if writing a letter gives you some control over what is happening, go for it. The letter could just be for you, maybe knowing you have it, just in case will help ease your pain. β€οΈ I also have a heart murmur, and all kinds of other issues. In the words of my med onc, one thing at a time.

Oh, Iβm so sorry to hear that most of us have anxiety in some shape or form!
I think itβs so normal to feel all sorts of things before any surgery, and especially when itβs related to breast cancer.
Iβm having my 8th surgery in 9 years on Wednesday. Iβm also feeling veryβ¦everything: mind racing, especially dense brain fog, hard time prioritizing realisticallyβ¦and Iβm actually relieved to be finally getting this surgery. Iβm hoping to gain some serious quality of life as I recover.
Even then, I definitely do not feel calm. My to-do list has about 4 weeksβ worth of stuff and I donβt even have 48 hours left!
Sending strength and gently urging self-compassion to everyone here. π2 -
I had my nipple sparing DMX surgery (no reconstruction) yesterday and it went well. Iβm resting at home and want to thank this group for your insight and encouragement while prepping and going into surgery! Iβll wanted to wait sometime before entering into the reconstruction journey.

@ninacon glad you are on the other side of surgery now!
@bmatthews and @sweet_pea175 good luck with your surgery this week! π I will be sending you positive vibes.
Today i am 2 weeks post op. Everyday is a little better. I don't really have pain any longer, just discomfort from the TEX. It is slow business. I have home occupational therapy starting Thursday I believe. And tomorrow will be my first TEX fill at plastics (at least I think!).
Hope everyone is doing ok π

thank you for the well wishes on upcoming surgery. Iβve got this.

Today I had an appt with plastics. I am 2 weeks post op from DMX and have TEX in place for a planned DIEP flap. I had seromas - they said this was expected. I wasn't exactly expecting it! They drained 20mL off one side and 60mL off the other. Then added 100mL of fluid to each TEX. It wasn't exactly uncomfortable but I did feel some pressure. And at home, I definitely need the ibuprofen.
Apparently I will follow this same process for weeks!
Hope this process gets easier

made it through surgery today and did indeed wake up. I feel like weight has been lifted off my shoulders and my anxiety level is now not through the roof. Good luck to others out there. Now to wait for pathology report to move to next steps.

Spent 4hrs doing pre-op stuff today and finishing work in preparation for my leave. Surgery next week. Feeling all the things, sadness, anxiety, anger.

I am feeling very down. I have a lot of discomfort with tissue expanders. I had a rough week of feeling cranky, annoyed, down. Seriously reconsidering reconstruction. π₯ the TEX are so awful.
Just needed to vent

just checking in as the countdown is on. Had my abdominal u/s and it was normal. Had my bone density and it was not the greatest which worries me as I will likely have to go on endocrine therapy. I already take Ca+ and Mg and a D3 with K2
I go to Nuclear Med Tues am for the sentinel node mapping and surgery on Wed. Unilateral mastectomy. No reconstruction at this time and at this point not sure anymore if I am up to all that.
Very anxious now.0 -
Hello. I found a lump on my breast May 31st. I have since been diagnosed with stage 2 invasive ductal carcinoma, grade 3. I had surgery August 31st, so not quite Sept. I am currently 3 weeks post surgery.
Before this, I had never had surgery or spent the night in a hospital. I chose to have a double mastectomy with reconstruction. It was a little bit of a tough choice because I didn't really want to go through all that. Honestly, I didn't want to, still don't want to, deal with any of this, but I was lucky to catch it so early, I guess.
To be honest, it was not an easy decision. I asked myself if I was vain to want two nice looking breasts. I questioned whether I could handle having no breasts. In the long run I made my decision because I have a tendency to be unkind to myself regarding my own body image and I didn't want more ammunition to think not nice things about myself. Maybe that is not the best reason, but I am the one who has to live with me and deal with my thoughts.
The surgery went well and I only spent one night in the hospital. I went home with 4 JP drains and have been living in a breast binder since. I am a t-shirt type of girl and found I was severely lacking in button up shirts which turns out are necessary when you can't lift your arms up.
These days, my wonderful husband does dressing changes for me twice a day. I'm not going to lie, looking at my chest can be difficult at times. I have tissue expanders which are basically inflatable placeholders under my skin and it doesn't look or feel nice. The drains are gone and I will be starting chemo Oct 5.
Life can be hard and overwhelming at times, but I am fortunate to have a good support group. I'm also grateful to have been able to share some of what I have been through. I feel like I have been carrying a lot and no one else quite knows what its like.

Thank you for sharing! I'm having a double mastectomy on October 5 and I can relate to your whole thought process behind that choice. I'm so anxious about the surgery and everything that comes afterwards. Trying to stay in a place of acceptance but every time life throws another challenge at me, I feel like I'm falling apart. Like, why can't the universe just go easy on me until I get passed all this cancer stuff?!? I hope you continue to heal well :)

Hi all, checking in after surgery on Sept. 11, Excited to be getting my drains out later today, but now wondering if the TEX are going to feel like this for the next four months??
@lab_heme_scientist and @daphne12777, I am wishing you strength. I had such similar questions about whether or not it was vanity leading my decision for reconstruction. But since surgery, I've been more focused on physical recovery than the mental aspects of this - more to come on that I'm sure. Keeping all of you in my thoughts and wishing you rest and physical/mental healing.2 -
Had my surgery, unilateral mastectomy Sept. 23. 2 days post op! Doing ok. Drain is still bloody, has not changed colour yet. More itchy than pain. Doing my arm exercises. A bit frustrated with homecare nursing but itβs ok. Wish they Coukd come at times convenient to me.

Glad to hear you're doing ok, @jaspercat!

4th day post op. I am so itching and have little pins and needles. I am using ice packs. Is there anything else I can do?

Home from the hospital yesterday afternoon. Unilateral mastectomy, lymph node biopsy, tissue expander placed. My reconstruction surgeon said no compression so I wasn't put into a surgical bra. I really don't like that, I want support for my other breast. Had some really high bp issues but am doing better. Grief hit me when I was in the hospital bed. I feel the missing weight of where my left breast used to be. They were able to save the nipple and some skin thanks to the treatments I had before surgery. Waiting on pathologyβ¦

Hello! Wanted to share an update after getting my pathology report and discussing it with my surgeon.
Report showed grade 2 DCIS (ER/PR+). Sentinel node was clear and no micro invasion was found(yay!:)) The final size was close to what should up in the MRI which was 2x that of the mammogram so mastectomy was the right decision. The other breast was clear. I have a spot where the margins were not clear (right against the top skin). The surgeon and tumor board recommendation is that any remaining tissue could be removed of during reconstruction surgery ( though Iβm now on the fence regarding reconstruction) The recovery from the bilateral mastectomy has been much smoother than I had anticipated, which is wonderful. Iβm not sure I want to go through another surgery. No endocrine therapy required according to tumor board (yay again!).I have an appointment with an oncologist next week to go through everything & get her thoughts. Hopefully it will line up with the surgeon and tumor board!
Thanks for reading:)

Got my pathology report from surgery and biopsy but don't see the surgeon until next week. There are some very scary things on itβ¦130mm tubololobular, Invasive plus in situ, plus the word metastasis but doesn't say where. If the lymph node is positive do they test to see where it has spread. And how? I did understand it said neuadjevant therapy did not work. The tumor was twice the size of any other imaging. 13cm seems huge, it had said 6.7cm with satellites. I'm pretty freaked out but also, trying to decipher the report is alot.

Sorry that there are scary things in your pathology report :( praying that your conversation with the surgeon is hopeful and helpful. ππ

Thank you for sharing your update! I'm having a double mastectomy on Monday, October 5 so it's nice to hear your recovery is going better than you expected. Do you have tissue expanders? Any advice for recovery would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, just checking in to see how you're doing. I'm having a bilateral mastectomy on Monday, October 5. Hope you're doing well :)

Hi
I did not do any reconstruction so no expanders. That definitely simplified my recovery. I wanted to wait a bit before deciding about reconstruction (had conversations about this and discussed options with my PS before my DMX).
Hope your surgery and recovery goes smoothly! π2
