Re: New Protocols
Hi @katmil, Recently oncologists have focused on making breast cancer treatment less toxic and more personalized. Studies have shown that sentinel lymph node biopsy makes no difference to survival in women older than 70 with early stage cancer and can therefore be skipped. PET scans are now done only for those diagnosed with stage 3. While tests like the Oncotype DX are useful in determining whether chemo would be beneficial for those with ER+/HER2- cancer, toxic side effects are likely to occur in women over 70 making chemo more dangerous than beneficial. Studies have also shown those over 70 with stage 1 bc can skip radiation if they take hormone blockers. Your sister is receiving treatment which is standard of care for a healthy woman in her 70’s. I hope her treatment goes well.
Re: Need help deciphering what my QT results mean.
Hi @tawnypreston, We are not doctors either. I know something about veterinary imaging but even a radiologist would need to examine the entire film sequence to offer an opinion.
The standard imaging for diagnosing breast abnormalities is a diagnostic mammogram followed by an ultrasound. An MRI is useful for dense breasts but can sometimes give false positives. All three of these modalities are noninvasive. While a mammogram compresses the breast and is uncomfortable it does not cause trauma or spread cancer. A QT scan uses transmitted ultrasound waves while a traditional ultrasound uses reflected waves. QT scans are relatively new but untested. One very small study showed that they were better at detecting benign lesions but worse at detecting malignant ones than a 2D mammogram. The standard mammogram now is 3D digital tomosynthesis which gives better views than the old type. QT is not a proven alternative to the three currently used modalities.
You should consult your doctor about next steps. A biopsy which is invasive is the only way to find out if an area of concern is cancer. A biopsy causes mild pain and bruising which heals in about a week. The discomfort is necessary to get a definitive answer. All the best.
Possible round 2 with cancer and scared
10 years ago I had idc stage 1 grade 2 in my right breast. Hormone receptor positive her- brca 1/2 negative
Had lumpectomy, 25 rounds radiation and 5 boosts. 5 years of tamoxifen.
Hysterectomy and oopherectomy in 2020 after issues with ovarian cysts and heavy bleeding. Had more genetic testing and nothing showed. Could not handle side effects of arimidex.
Now 10 years later I just had a biopsy on suspicious mass found on both mammo/sono. BI-RADS 4 b/c was on report. I am trying to remain calm but this waiting is hard.
I had a crao (eye stroke) in 2023 and I don’t know how that will affect my treatment (if needed) drs could not find cause for stroke believed tamoxifen/covid/bc thickened my blood.
I was so happy in August celebrating 10 years from my lumpectomy. Hope results come quickly!!
Re: Can we have a forum for "older" people with bc?
Petite - I’m also commiserating with you in the headaches of owning two homes. It’s a joy to have a getaway but as I remember from my time of owning a vacation home, when it rains, it pours. Wishing you good luck.
Re: Can we have a forum for "older" people with bc?
I forgot to commiserate with Petite for her expenses and headaches in repairs to two homes. Hopefully, the results will lead to greater enjoyment.
Re: I say YES. YOU say NO....Numero Tre! Enjoy!
Betrayal, as a Clinical Social Worker I am also among those who are no longer considered “professionals” by the current administration…the most unprofessional group of morons ever assembled. I’m appalled by everything that they are doing, but this really got under my skin!
Re: Birads 5 with calcification
I’m so relieved to be starting treatment tomorrow, but I haven’t been feeling my best physically these past three days. I’ve had a lingering headache since Sunday, and nothing I take seems to help. I’m pretty sure it’s from all the running around I did last week. All three of my kids started school this week, so I spent everyday last week on the go from sunup to sundown, school shopping, both girls had hair appointments, I had a drs appointments on both Tuesday and Wednesday, plus catering a huge spread for my sister’s gender reveal on Saturday. Imagine the stress. Im glad to be back out the house but I definitely overdid it. lol! I can always tell when my blood pressure is up, and right now it feels like it’s through the roof! Fingers crossed it’s back down by tomorrow.
One more question! sorry for flooding y’all today! I read somewhere that it’s not recommended to share a bathroom during chemo. I have a six-year-old who, despite having her own bathroom (shared with her two siblings), prefers to use mine most of the time. With treatment starting tomorrow, should I keep her from using my bathroom?
