Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Monday Monkey Day! Zoe is going to be the focus of today. She has her annual Vet appointment this morning. She's had the first set of "chill pills" at bed time last night, and I don't see that they've had much of an effect on her at all. It'll be interesting to see what the second round does a couple hours before the appointment.

    Morning, Carole!

    Morning, Minus!

    Jazzy--awwwwww! Fuzzy babies!

    Morning Teka!

    Veterinary Cocktail
    โ€ข 1 part pure Grain alcohol (96%)
    โ€ข 2 parts Lime juice
    โ€ข 3 parts Sprite (or 7-UP)

To craft this exquisite cocktail, begin by gently stirring the following ingredients: 1 part pure Grain alcohol (96%), 2 parts Lime juice, 3 parts Sprite (or 7-UP). Once blended to perfection, pour into the highball glass and enjoy. The process is as enjoyable as savoring the drink itself.

There's a good reason a veterinary cocktail would include PGA. It is a common antidote used to treat pets when they ingest antifreeze. Ethanol bonds with the antifreeze in the animal's system to prevent it from being metabolized and causing acidosis and kidney damage.

    Morning all!

Got the second blanket done finally on Sunday. Grabbed yarn from my yarn stash to start the next one. Its for my cousin's daughter who is tomboyish but girlie, so i grabbed skeins that are vareigated pink and white, one that is shades of purple and pink and then one of purple, white and blue. Added a solid 7 oz. skein of a light mauve to the mix in case i didnt have enough of the mixed skeins as those are 5 oz. skeins. Not following a pattern but making one up of my own all consisting of half double crochet. One row is traditional half double crochet, the next row is half double crochet that alternates in going through the back or front loop. Might even make some placemats for my table from my yarn stash during the day and work on the blanket at night. After the current blanket, I only have one more to go and then the blankets I'm making for my cousin's kids are done! Thinking of dragging out a couple of patterns for plastic canvas and making some decorations for the house to replace a few that got busted up thanks to the movers.

Finally got the pedestal for my dining table up from storage yesterday. So the final piece to come up is the table top. May rent a truck to get it and cabinet from storage that I used to use for clothing back in Connecticut for extra storage here. Was looking at the hardware to attach the table top to the pedestal and found that the movers had lost some pieces. Thankfully hubby had a part on hand to replace one of the missing pieces, the other required a trip to Menards to get the other piece. Took a piece of the missing component with to find the exact piece and got lucky. Have everything now for attaching the the parts of the table together. Just got to get another package of the floor protectors for the last two chairs and everything will be complete once everything is here.

    Hi ladies:

I hope everyone is doing well on this Funday Sunday. Hard to believe that we are already to the end of April and May is end of this coming week and Memorial Day a month away. January to Memorial Day always feels like a long stretch because we don't get any holidays at work. That being said, I take extra in Feb, March and April and had Friday off, so it's been a three-day weekend this weekend. Whoo hoo!

The photos above are of my barrel cactus (bought 2 years ago) and my claret cup (been with me since 2012). The barrel cactus is still in a pot and haven't put it in the garden yet, but it bloomed this year (didn't last year) and is beautiful. I have an idea of where it will go this year. The claret cup now has more flowers open and will post that shortly. Some of my cactus has not been doing well with the climate change, and I had a prickly pear that needed to come out last fall that got a fungus. Now see it on my cholla that will probably need to come out next. Some things are crowded too, so creating space for things to do better. These flowers bloom and stay for days, prickly pears and other cacti only bloom for one day and are then done. I have blooms about to start on my cholla and elephant ear cactus and will post those soon. I am busy doing some plantings now that we are past frost risk.

Work is rolling along and still planning to leave by end of the year but maybe sooner too. It's a quarter-by-quarter thing right now with making sure my finances are in order and goals met. I am continuing to work on home improvement things and also planning to start yoga teacher training late summer/early fall. Waiting for the date on that and think once I get this "next chapter" activities started, I will be ready to go. I may still do some consulting work later on and won't have the limitations on income once I reach full social security next March, so I am in the home stretch. My boss asked me if I wanted to stay another year (um, nope) as they have a lot of work coming at them and not enough resources. We don't get raises anymore and during an expensive time so I would rather go work with PT consulting and decide how much I want to make. It's getting really hard here to get any kind of wellness/specialty apts for anything at my healthcare delivery system and know that is only going to get worse. I know that is true in many places too, the Medicaid cuts coming next year are going to tank a lot of placesโ€ฆ..

I went out yesterday for brunch with a friend who passed her 5-year cancerversary. She said most people don't understand how much of a big deal it is, but told her my experience as a cancer survivor is most people don't understand much of the cancer journey unless they have had it or were close to someone who did. I found many are too scared to ask anything and most have no idea about the five-year thing either? She has a good friend who also went through an aggressive BC a few years back and will be able to be with her during her five-year milestone (God willing) when she gets there. I am 13 years cancer free since this past Feb and grateful.

Hoping everyone is enjoying the unfolding of spring and no problems with the terrible tornadoes that have been going on. One of my TX friends had one a mile from her house last night.

Have a good start to May and will share more blooms as I can!

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Monday Monkey Day! I had a bit of a difficult visit with Mom yesterday. I've kind of noticed a few signs of decline lately, but really noticed them yesterday. Her ability to carry on a conversation is noticeably less than it used to be even a month ago. The forgetting of names of things has become more global, not so much focused on names of people but more everyday objects as well. She's talking about her plans to move to someplace bigger so she can have more of her own stuff around her again, or her plans to move a lot of her painting and quilting things into her room, where there simply is not enough room for them to be stored. She's been trying to change the TV channel using the phone, and can't always tell the phone and the TV remote apart. The facility Chef uses a lot of different seasonings that Mom is not used to seeing and she is now checking her meals for "bugs" before eating anything. It's so hard to convince her that a pepper flake or rosemary needle is not a bug. Her mood swings are coming so fast at times that I end up totally confused about how I should be responding to any particular comment, or figure out when a complaint is really a complaint or just an expression of frustrations. Its so hard to see how big the gap is getting between what she wants to do and what she is capable of doing, and that she is aware of her declining memory. Sometimes I wish she had Alzheimer's instead of Vascular dementia, so there would come a point when she is no longer aware of her declining mental status.

Miriandra--interesting about pure grain alcohol binding with antifreeze.

mOmmy--you really are coming along with the blankets, good for you!

    Jazzy--Beautiful blossoms!

    Morning, Carole!

mOmmy--sounds like the table and chairs are coming along. Please send a pic when they are all done, I'm really curious to see them! I bet itโ€™s a beautiful set.

Teka--I hear the tick season is expected to be pretty heavy this year in some parts of the country. Be careful out there!

Wally--I'm betting the boxed wines are getting better. I thinks vineyards making higher quality wines are figuring out that there are advantages to bottling in boxes, like easier transportation for picnics and camping trips, easier storage, less loss to breakage and the like.

Jazzy--it sounds like you've got a beautiful garden! I can see where your plans for transitioning into your next chapter. I fear you are too correct about the reimbursement cuts and changes coming into play causing a lot of loss of access to health care. More and more rural hospitals are being forced into stopping specialty services and even some basic services due to decreasing reimbursement and increasing quality measure hoops to jump through. It is too true that most people outside of those in the cancer community have any idea what the journey is like, or that it even is a journey of more than a few months or a year or so.

    Morning, Minus!

NM, I'm sorry to hear that your Mom is showing more significant declines. My Dad, who is very much a brain-oriented guy, has noticed that he has been having a harder and harder time remembering words and names. His sister passed from Alzheimer's, so it's definitely a fear within the family.

I recently saw an article about new research on how microdoses of LSD and psilocybin can increase neural plasticity in the brain and potentially reverse the effects of dementia and age-related cognition issues. The case study that got everyone excited was a 97 year-old woman who had advanced dementia and was given microdoses of LSD. She regained lucidity, her sense of self, and personality during the protocol trial. Psilocybin has shown similar effects in neurological studies, and has been legalized in several states - including Maine.

Microdoses are too small to cause hallucinogenic effects, but are still potent enough to be getting attention for depression and cognition studies. Might this be something to ask your Mom and her doctors about?

NM- sorry to hear about your mom's progression with her cognitive decline. My father had early onset Alzheimer's and at the end, and my mother had some cognitive issues after her stroke that evolved more into what I think was vascular dementia towards the end. It's so hard to watch these strong independent parents we knew go through this kind of decline. Sending you much love and please take care of yourself as supporting all this take a huge toll on us adult children.

Today is a special day in my house, it's my 'fur son's' birthday. He is six now. Bought him a couple of gifts, he got a second tiger toy but unlike the one he's had since he was a puppy, the new one squeaks. He went totally bananas over it. His kitty 'sisters' got him a toy which should be here today as both were ordered online. When he woke up this morning he got birthday hugs and kisses from mommy.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Sunday Funday! Another cold, rainy day here. The puppers have buried themselves in the blankets and pillows on the chaise, cuddled up together, and snoring in stereo. I would like to still be in my nice warm bed, but pupper bladders, and mine after Zoe stepped on it a couple of times, decided that wasn't happening. Just as well we got up a bit early, Mom has called three times this morning, she's not having a particularly good morning today. First thing in the morning is not her best time of day. It seems to take her brain a couple of hours to get warmed up and running optimally. Every so often she has a particularly rough starting morning. I'm not sure if something triggers these more difficult mornings or if it's just something that her brain is doing. Usually she's back on track and doesn't even remember having a rough morning by lunch time. What hurts me so much during these mornings is that she knows she is having a hard time, she knows her ability to name things and talk about things is affected, and that it's getting worse, and it upsets her. What do you say to your 90 year old mother with vascular dementia when she asks why there isn't anything that can be done to help her remember words and talk to people?

Jazzy--I'm so sorry you had to go through these kind of cognitive issues with your Mom. It is a hard job taking care of a parent knowing nothing can be done to change things. I am working on taking care of myself, I can do a lot better in many aspects of that but I am making progress. But there are still some very, very hard days.

mOmmy--belated birthday wishes from the Puppers to your Fur Son! I bet he loved the b-day hugs and kisses. And I think it's fun for him to get presents on more than one day. It spreads out the fun!

I intended to add the latest Mother-Daughter story to today's post, but forgot for a moment.

    Disconnected Discussion and Disappearing Device

My morning routine is simple: coffee, word games, and the daily effort to keep my brain nimble enough to retrieve the words I want when I want them. Iโ€™m contemplating a second cup of coffee when the phone rings.

    Mother is calling.

I immediately place a side bet with myself: if she says she was going to ask or tell me something but canโ€™t remember what it was, I win the second cup.

Daughter: Good morning, Mother. Mother: Good morning, Daughter. Did you call me or did I call you? Daughter: You called me. Mother: Oh. Yes, it says itโ€™s you on the phone. Did you call during the night? The phone said you called last night. Daughter: No, I didnโ€™t call you during the night. I wasnโ€™t awake to call anybody during the night last night. Mother: Are you sure? Daughter: Yes, Iโ€™m sure.

    We move on.

Mother: Whatโ€™s going on exciting with you today? Daughter: Laundry day, I think. Whatโ€™s going on with you? Mother: I donโ€™t know. I havenโ€™t had breakfast yet. There was something I was going to ask you or tell you next time we called, but I canโ€™t remember what it was. Pause. Iโ€™ve got my hearing aids in but one is missing.

I silently claim my second cup of coffee.

Daughter: Oh dear. Well, I doubt the hearing aid has gone very far. Is it still in the charging case? The black box on the window sill where you put them at night. Mother: Let me look. (rustling) Whatโ€™s this? Is this it? No, itโ€™s got a long thing on it. It goes into the wall. Daughter: That sounds like the wire that plugs the charging case into the wall. The hearing aid might be in the little box the wire is connected to. Mother: I better unplug it just in case. Daughter: No, don DISCONNECT.

    I call her back.

Daughter: Hello again, Mother. Mother: Youโ€™re back again. Daughter: Yes, we got disconnected. Mother: I thought so. Did I tell you one of my hearing aids is missing? Daughter: Yes, you mentioned that. Did you look in your lap? You might have dropped it while putting them in. Mother: I can do that. Oops, gotta go, the girl is saying breakfast is almost ready. Daughter: Enjoy your breakfast.

Two minutes pass. The phone rings again.

Daughter: Hello again, Mother. Mother: Hello Daughter. How are you this morning? Daughter: Iโ€™m fine. How are you. Mother: I canโ€™t find one of my hearing aids. Daughter: You mentioned that. Youโ€™ll have to look for it after breakfast. Mother: Oops, gotta go, the girl is here to take me to breakfast.

Two minutes pass. The phone rings again.

Daughter: Hello again, Mother. Mother: My hearing aid was in my left ear. Iโ€™m going to breakfast now. DISCONNECT.

And just like that, here we go again โ€” the hearing aid that was โ€œmissingโ€ was never missing at all. It was quietly nestled in her left ear the whole time. Mother heads off to breakfast, unfazed but triumphant. You can hear the girl laughing softly in the background, sharing the joke with the universe.

Meanwhile, I pour my second cup of coffee, already bracing myself for the next round.

We have a large maple in our backyard (it't the tree in the snowy pic). One of the trunks got hollowed out by squirrels and flickers, and it snapped during the snow. Fortunately, nothing was damaged besides the tree, and it's doing just fine. When my husband tried to move the fallen trunk, it spilt open revealing at least five summers of flicker nests.

    IMG_5321.jpeg

There's still a chunk of the broken trunk lodged in the tree.
