how about drinking?

Kymm......sorry about stuff being taken away. Don't sweat it though. When you get fully back in your groove, I am sure you will get stuff back.
I know what you mean about life standing still. Yes, I felt that, and then because I am still a Type A, kept beating myself up for not moving forward.
You will get there.
I had about 8 months of not feeling I looked like the "real Claire" post treatment too. I was fine with uber short, but the in-between to where I am now sucked. I was ready to slug the next person who told me how "cute" it looked.
It all came together about one year post chemo. I did tons of stuff in the interim, but that was when I finally moved forward.
No one tells us this. I am still frosted that I couldn't look up "normal recovery" and find anything better than "everyone is different". Well....but I know that there are most likely segments from my research work, so definite patterns. This research has yet to be done.
Anyway Kymm, hang in there. You should expect a full recovery, and then a life that is better than ever.
But yes, I felt my life was standing still. - Claire

Kymm......exercise helps keep the blues away.
I set myself fitness goals (Livestrong 12 days after radiation, for example) and made sure I met them. Really helped with the morale piece. Plus my body looked fab.
Training kept me on track with exercise.
A friend of mine was just off to visit someone who has serious heart problems. She will never recover. Things like this put it into perspective for me.
I am more fit than ever, as long as you don't count my banged-up ankle. - Claire

Claire- how did you get going on really doing exercise? I went to my trainer today and was just so out of breath and tired- I didn't used to (before BC and with estrogen) at all. I had tons of energy and it made me feel better. Today after my session I wanted to go back to sleep. That can't be right, can it?
Kymn- Yes I totally relate to time standing still. I would say I feel like I'm stuck in a phone booth where I'm there I see life and I do come out at times and do things but I'm not really a part of life as I'm stuck in the phone booth or a fog... Still feel like that sometimes but not as much. You are still going through SO much right now and with kids and your husband.... well goodness! Maybe it is a blessing to be in a bit of a fog just so you can get through it all. I know what you mean about missing things with your kids.... I had to miss a bunch of things and it was very painful and sad but it will get better - promise!

Kymn, I agree with Claire and Stanzie....about life standing still...I didn't have chemo or rads, but recovering from the bilat mast, and then the exch surgery, etc. Seemed like I would never heal, as my body just wasn't healing quickly like it used to. Sorta scary that things would be soooo different. Well, after some time, I feel mostly like I did before bc. I was worried I wouldn't be able to garden again, do big projects, etc. But I do most of what I used to do. Hang in there...you have gone through so very much, and now on the downward stretch.
Stanzie, Well, I bought the groupon thing today for 3, 1 hr sessions w/ personal trainer. Never done that before, but with my bad back, I realize I do not know which exercizes would be ok for me to do. So even if I can't do an hr of exercize, will be good to know what I SHOULD do! SInce you have MS and BC, don't be toooo hard on yourself. There is a lot of stress just dealing with all that, plus you still have revisions to do. Do you also find that you get more winded when it is real hot and humid? I do....much harder to breathe, and always am stuffy living here in the south. Don't give up, just do what you can do, and it should get easier in time. You are also a single mom, and that takes a LOT of energy....how well I remember that!!!
Spent 3 1/2 hrs trying to book an escorted tour of Ireland, with air.It shows I can book air from here, but then will not complete. Even called the tour co and a girl worked for over an hr and couldn't get it either. SHEESH! Was going to do this for our anniv in Nov, but getting frustrated with it. Could fly or drive to ATL, but would be MUCH easier from here. I need a dwink!!!!!
Slainte!

Stanzie.....I never lost my core fitness. That is important to remember. So even though I got winded during chemo, and had to manage energy, I was able to cycle/walk/lift weights/ski.
I got tired too following radiation. But again, that was temporary. I had recovered sufficiently by week 5 to do the Seattle-to-Portland. Again, I ran into energy issues, but sucked down a ton of potions and I was fine.
I did notice that I didn't have full lung capacity until about 6 months following radiation. This was not enough to impact normal riding, but I did notice it. I now cycle faster than ever.
I was fine by the time ski season hit. Well, except that I didn't realize that my lower pectoral was weakened from radiation, so I pulled that big time skiing through about 8" of heavy powder for ten miles. I would never have known this otherwise. That hurt like a mother for about 3 months, but is now healing. So I really am fine there.
You are about six months behind me. The big difference I can see is that you most likely lost your core fitness. This will take some time to rebuild. So flexibility, muscle tone, and stamina. All that good stuff. When you get there, you will have more energy.
The path back will take work. Think you will be thrilled when you get there though.
I also believe that once you are fitter, other things in your life will get better too. Just strength and confidence. Not getting winded. My brain works better too.
I really don't think estrogen has anything to do with this BTW. Much more the hammering and inertia. I actually wanted to test that hypothesis during treatment. I don't think I have any less energy than I did 30 years ago. But keeping things that way takes discipline.
Which is why I intend to exercise as long as I can. - Claire

Thanks ladies,
Claire I willl try and fit some more fitness somewhere in my routine I am thinking about ordering those Zumba videos they look like fun and a good workout. Maybe once I start rads and am not fighting chemo body anymore.
Soooooo to add insult to injury, like I havent had enough SE, I know have a huge boil right where my leg and crotch area connect there is no head on it so it cant be popped and drained and its red and sore
HELP me boo hooo what do I do.0 -
YIkes, Kymn.....hope our resident nurse NM, will be checking in and can advise you. I have no idea what to do...our ins co (BLue Cross) has a "nurse line" so I would prolly have called that, or else maybe your doctor's nurse might have some advice. I am thinking moist heat, like a hot compress, but really don't know if that is the correct thing to do. Can you "google" it? You poor dear, when it rains, it pours.....literally!
Right now it is pouring here, thunderstorm warnings too. The storm that came thru quickly yesterday afternoon (and cancelled the concert) had winds of 60mph, and took so many trees down, blew a car upside down into a ditch (thank god the concrete held it up, or the driver would have been upside down in a muddy creek). The pic of the car totally vertical, is amazing. I finally bit the bullet as DH wanted us to drive to ATL, so we could do the trip to Ireland. We don't usually do escorted tours, but this one covers several areas, so I think it will be good. This was always at the top of my "bucket list", but just never got around to planning a trip there. Now that I got our res, I mentioned it to my parents and they want to go too, so I am hoping to get the same flights for them.
Pau Hana time! WooHoo!!! Seagrams/Diet Coke, here I come! Anyone still here that wants to dwink? Kymn, if we get you dwunk, then you won't even feel the pain from that boil!
Partay! Partay! Partay!!!!!

I had a beautiful long post that went poof! ARRGGHH!
Kymn--CALL YOUR ONC'S OFFICE, ASAP!! Any infection during chemo has to be treated quickly and with antibiotics in addition to any other treatment. Normally you could do the moist heat thing to try to bring it to a head and have it pop, but while you are on chemo there is too much risk of the infection getting into your bloodstream. The chemo is beating up your immune system, it just doesn't have its usual fighting ability. Please do not try to pop it until you are on antibiotics. I'm so sorry you have to put up with this along with everything else.

So glad you are here tonight NM, and were able to give Kymn that good advice! Thank God for your knowledge.....and I hope Kymn, that you were able to reach your dr.

Arrived in cloudy, dreary, drizzly Toronto...but thats okay because I'm with good company!!! DD made meatballs, rice, coleslaw and peas for dinner....she's quite the little cook.
This morning got the luggage in the car and took DD#2 to Starbucks while DH finished relaxing to take his morning constitution.....got back to the house and he was waiting outside....so I never went back in and did a once over....realized at the airport, after checking in, that I forgot my computer!!!!! I left it on the chair in the family room....Jokingly, I told DH that it was his fault because I didn't get to do a "walk through".....but it didn't even dawn on me to do it when I was in the car.....so DH was sweet and mailed the computer to my parent's house...did this after airport and before he went to oral surgeon for two dental implants....really sweet of him to do, but he knows I really can't go 3 /12 weeks without it...fortunately, I have access to computer at DD and at my parents.......the computer should be there by end of week. I don't plan on spending a lot of time on the computer, but don't want to be without it for 5 weeks!!!
Enjoyed a nice glass of Merlot after dinner.....going to check out a few other things on the computer, then sign off.....Sweet dreams....Karen

O my Karen. See no harm done though. But so annoying.
Kymm.......NM is so right. I didn't even think of that one as I had Neulasta support throughout chemo. But really critical for anyone whose immune system is not functioning.
BTW - I got bicycle saddle sores in that general area. So remember the feeling well. Taxol makes your skin more delicate.
Feel better. - Claire

Peace, cheers, beers and hell no, no fears. Here is a toast to LIFE!

Stanzie - I have found my insurance company to be very helpful (BCBS). Good luck!
Kymn - I didn't have chemo treatments but I had surgery 9 times. Decided to distract myself. I needed something forward-looking while all that was going on which is why I proceeded with my CPA exams. I had some down time with each visit to the OR so I used it to study (otherwise I just know I would have been moping around and feeling sorry for myself). I used to go to the park to study and would take breaks and walk around the athletic field (1/2 mile loop) every hour. Being outdoors in a nice place, the exercise, and having a goal kept me from feeling depressed... at least until I realized I was at the end of my exams and started to reflect on what I had just been through. Then I turned to Wii. Yikes! Just read your next post and NM's response. Hope everything is ok!
LOL, Claire. Don't know much about Picasso as a person but he deconstructed men, animals and musical instruments too. My friend said he was not good to his wives. I think he had true affection for the WD, though, so he couldn't be all bad.
Karen - I'm jealous. It was 98 degrees where I was today (but much cooler at home by the sea). I haven't been sleeping cuz I get too hot at night. Weird, it's only in the low 60's/ high 50's... but WD has been sleeping with me and he is like a little hot water bottle.
I'm melllllllting!0 -
Dropped by the HTL to chat before checking to see if the score on my last exam was posted. Just checked and it's finally there - I PASSED! WOOHOOOOOOO!!! ... now what am I going to do with myself?
0 -
OMG Gail.....that is weird....but....exactly how I feel during the hot, steamy, humid days! Sorta an eerie pic, but interestng too. Would a fan help you sleep? I find that even though the temp might be low, if no air is circulating, then I just get plain hot! So I keep the temps low at night (DH has to wear a sweatshirt...lol), and the ceiling fan on, too. Hope you can sleep bettah too-nite. BTW, thanks for posting the Picasso WD....hadn't seen that and it is way cool.

I was thinking about a fan but DH can't sleep if there is any noise whatsoever.

Gail.....here celebrating with you. Major, major accomplishment.
I am hoping that I get to the next career phase soon. But really interesting stuff going on.
Really thrilled that I was much better when I did my walk today. Was limping, but not quite the sad case of the past 3 days. Still have purple toes.
Cool here......mid 60s. Perfect weather, and the most glorious evening. - Claire

yee-haw!!! PAR-TAY coming up to celebrate Gail's good news! CONGRATS!!! I had no doubt that you would pass, but always a relief for you to have it officially acknowledged!
Ohhhh Kymn--OUCH!! Have had two sebaceous cysts in "that" area----quite painful and totally gruesome when they finally drained. Did the hot compresses (a wash rag and the hottest water I could stand and applied for hours on end to bring to a head----I know, TMI). But, NM is right on for you to call your onc ASAP because of your chemo and potential infection possibilities due to low blood counts. Hope you can talk to dr tomorrow and let us know how it goes.
Karen--safe travels--glad you are on your way.....sorry about your computer but at least it wasn't your passport!! My only packing travel tip was to pack--then remove half the clothes you had packed and put in a smaller suitcase and take TWICE as much $$ as you had planned!!! Can't wait to hear about your travels.
Lori--enjoy the wild childs while they're there and let all the other crap roll off your back--hard to do but know how much you guys love those grandkids.
My iPad2 arrived today--a miracle since the address on the mailing label was transposed. DH was gone when the doorbell rang. The dog went nuts because it wasn't our usual FedEx guy (can you tell we have a lot of on-line shopping deliveries???) So, I'm trying to back the dog off the door, get my nose hose where I can step outside......the delivery guy was frazzled enough without me popping out the door wearing the oxy thing and the dog barking like he was going to take the guys' head off...and I get outside to sign for the package---and the guy starts telling ME his sob story about how hard it was to get the pkg delivered because the mailing address was wrong and wasn't he brilliant for figuring it out so the pkg didnt have to be returned.....and I grabbed the box out of his hands and was like a little kid--interrupted him with squeals of thankyou thankyou thankyou--this is my birthday present....thankyou thankyou....signed his little electronic gadget and sent him on his way.......Does anyone tip USPS and FedEx people???? Have never thought to do that before, but this guy did go out of his way to try and deliver a mis-addressed package........too bad!!!
I think I have it plugged in and charging up. Tomorrow will be a fun day! Also just a few things to do in the morning to get the B&B ready for the StLouis kids/grandkids, coming tomorrow for 3 or 4 days. The good thing is that one of the adults is really 'puter savvy so hope he can get us up and running on the new toy!. Think i am going to enjoy it.
Grabbing my dog beers and heading out to the pool to see if anyone's still around. I need a chill out period and a good chat session!!!!
big huggssss to ALL!!!! bottomsup!

Astorm - may need to PM you as seems you might be one of the few with the same insurance.Big Huge Congratulations!!!! You are so smart so knew you would pass and I'm sure with big ol flying colors! Oh and I agree with Kathy - I found I have to have a fan going even if it is cool - somehow the air movement makes the difference. My fan is pretty quiet but then I love white noise so can't imagine trying to sleep in complete silence.
Oh Kymn - I've had those too and soooo painful. Hopefully they can call you in antibotics quickly.
Junie - I can just picture you with that poor Fed Ex guy - I think probably seeing you so happy and thrilled made his day so you did tip him just not in the money way. Can't wait to hear how you like it.
Oh my Claire - purple toes, that doesn't sound good at all......Will keep working at stamina and core and such - thanks for the encouragement.

Kathy, that is hilarious that you called your church "Shady Lady". So you are going to Ireland?
Gail, so sweet of you to help out Stanzie and yet with another BCO gal.
Chrissy, can the rest of us take our cotton balls off now too? Yay for no more cotton balls and cauliflower. Glad it looks like everything will look good as new, or maybe even better! The town is part of our fence. It is an Old West Town front, with 2 of the buildings being actual buildings. I guess you missed the pictures I posted a few pages back, pages 506 and 507.
Awwww, thanks for the compliment Mitch...hugs and air kisses to each cheek! I'm not so sure that it's just being southern that makes you so sweet and polite, but indeed you are. I too try and be as polite as I can and am not one to argue, so I totally understand where you are coming from. I find it hard to stand up for myself sometimes, but getting a better at it. Sounds like the stuff you bought at the fruit stand weren't local and fresh. They have one they set up in town, but if you look, there is a truck parked out there and I assume it is stuff brought in from CA or something. We stopped and got some stuff one day, and it was all horrid.
Kymn, we all handle this differently....you will get there and the 4 week break will be one you will welcome with open arms. And your DD will do just fine at camp without you. For me, I tried to carry on as normally as I could, so as NOT to fall into a funk. So sorry about the boil issue and I sure hope this doesn't cause problems. (I knew NM would pipe up with some advice) So good to have her here, for more reasons than one!
Karen, glad you checked in....ENJOY chica!
Gail, I feel the same way about melting. We reached 100 yesterday. Congrats on the passing grade, but we all knew you would. Oh dear, you DH has to have complete silence? We have the tv on, the ceiling fan and then I have a little fan next to me on my night stand!
Purple toes Claire? Are you sure nothing is broken? Just really bruised I guess. Glad it is healing.
Junie, indeed I will enjoy the kids and def. let the rest roll! I won't let that ruin it. Hahaha, you should ask Kathy about the tipping, as I think she is our big online shopper! Enjoy your family and I am sure you will get some good help from the family member.
Gheesh Mitch, are up late or early? Looks as though your post is about 3 am your time? I have been up since 2 am. So I will be taking a sleeping pill tonight. Hate it when I can't sleep. Was up at 3 am yesterday, but was able to get some cleaning done that I usually do on the weekend and will be able to get more done this morning!
Ok, need to get another cup of coffee, been reading and working on this post for over an hour! This is such a BIZZY place!0 -
Karen--Yikes! Glad the problem could be solved so easily, your DH is wonderful! I can relate to not planning to be on the computer much but wanting to have it available. Enjoy your visit with DD and your parents.
Kymn--infections can progress very quickly while you are on chemo. I know it's a pain to take time off but you could end up in the hospital if you don't get on top of this right away. Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse but I used to be a chemo nurse and I saw too many people end up in ICU with blood stream infections from "just a little (fill in the blank) that they didn't get on antibiotics for. Let us know what your onc says, ok? PS: tequila (and other alcohol) does have ant microbial effects (at least in test tubes)1DorK--Hope you slept well!
AStorm--Love the melting woman pic! Having something to focus on is really helpful during treatment. And I've got to start using my Wii again, or start walking or SOMETHING, I need to get my core fitness, as Claire says, back. Congrats on passing the exam!
Claire--good to hear you are healing, even if you are still a bit gimpy! The next career phase is just around the corner for you, I am sure (and praying for).
Junie--Yes, we need a celebration PARTAY for Astorm! I'm not sure if delivery people can accept tips or not. Perhaps you could write a note to the local office manager to express your pleasure at the delivery man's extra work? That way he would get acknowledgement and his boss would know he went the extra mile. I'm jealous, I want an iPad, It just looks like such a cool gizmo. Let us know how it works--if it works like a computer maybe I can replace my dying laptops with an iPad!
Stanzie--I had Anthem/Blue Cross during rads complications treatment and reconstruction and the CM was really helpful. I even called her from the docs office a few times, leaving contact name & number information when I was looking for coverage info. Made things go much more smoothly AND quicker--less waiting to hear from the company to respond through usual channels.
It's turned cool and dreary again here. But, we do need some rain. Gonna get the lawn mowed today, and play in the garden some.

Sneaking into the lounge at work while my main processing system is rebooting....just read through the posts. Have I said that I reallly dig you girls?
Hopping into the chapel to say a prayer for all but especially thinking of Kymn. Hang in there darling and let us know how you make out.
Well I am going to hit the bar might quick and grab a drink. I will put in sippy cup so no one knows.
My boss was out yesterday so I talked to my VP, all is well at work. I think my manager was just overwhelmed with what to do with all my loans as we are all well over capacity. Oops, gotta fly, love you loungettes and have one for me. Or four........

Yummmmm NM, I like that dwinkie....nice and sweet and purrfect for this morning (and mid-morn, noon, afternoon, evening.....).
I agree with you all....PARTAY time for GAIL!!!! Way to go Gail, on aceing that! We knew you would,as you are not only smart, but determined, and you go after what you want. Nice to have had that to focus on.
Awww Stanzie, you ARE such a Southern Lady! When I moved here, my girls were just 1 and 3.5 yrs old. Saying "yes maam and no maam" were very foreign to me, and being from HI, we thought that was sort of backwards (sorry). So I forbade my kids from saying that to me. Well, when they started school, they got in TROUBLE for not saying "yes maam, and no maam" to their teachers! Made me feel badly when I found out about that, many years later. Now I think it is a nice show of respect, but omg it makes me feel soooooo old to have someone call me "maam". I wouldn't want you to change your ways, as I think it is nice to be so polite and to think carefully about what you say.BUT yeah, you have to get a backbone to deal with some of these a$$hole contractors. I don't know why, but they run all over us, too. We have BCBS ins too (is that what you have??).
Lori, Yuppers, will be going to Ireland...has been on my bucket list, at the top actually, for years. Just always had so many other plans and trips. Just hope my parents will be up to it, and not have any problems while we are all there. When in Thailand, yrs ago, my stepdad was 90, and he fell and tripped on some steps...he actually was walking with his back slanted waaaay back right before he fell. It was hard to even get some bandages from the restaurant....so different than in our country. As it turned out, just a very banged up shin....luckily that was all. Then my dad got hurt in a cave in New Zealand when he was around 90...was dark and there were stalagtites and stalagmites that you couldn't see...of course he thought he should go first....ended up bruised and with broken ribs! But he acted like he was ok, till a couple of days later when he could hardly close the van door....took him to a clinic...all the xray techs in NZ were on strike...so dr had to "guess"! All turned out ok though. Oh yes, enjoy those little ones soooooo much!!!! When do they all get there?
Junie, Company AGAIN???? LOL. Hope you get rested before they all get there, and that you can enjoy them totally. Nice that you got the pool membership, so they can use that if they want to. One of these days we need to get into the pool here, as we have to pay for it whether or not we use it. And no, I do not tip the delivery guys. I feel that when I have a lot of orders, I am giving them job security! LOL. But good idea to write a note to his supervisor....that means much more than a tip would. Actually, I have not had ANY deliveries lately....maybe just 1-2 a month now, versus several a day like I used to have.
Gail, I think maybe your DH could "try" to get used to some noise, or else find a really quiet fan like Stanzie has. WHen I married my DH, i didn't like any fan on me, or any noise. Well, HE liked a fan on, and had to have noise, so I got used to it. Now we have "white noise" on all night and it really does help sleep thru snoring, etc. And now I am the one wanting the fan on, (not him), but he just wears warm clothes to bed with the mattresspad warmer on, and lots of blankets! Thank God I got us a mattress pad with dual controls, as mine is always off. HOpe you can get your DH to let you have a fan, it really does help. AND it is not YOUR fault you get hot at night....wish we could control that, but we can't. So I hope he will agree to that.
DorK, Glad you will go ahead with your surgery. Work can wait....my late DH worked soooo many hours that we hated to ever count them....usually 12-16 hr days. I think he thought he was indispensible.....but of course after he died, someone else took his position at work. I am sure they didn't do as good a job as he did, but it wasn't worth losing his health over. Your job is much different, as your pay is dependant on how hard you work. So I can totally understand why you hate to be off, and hate to lose any contacts. But while you are home recuperating, I am sure SOMEONE can fill in for you. You just need to concentrate on YOU for awhile, and what is best for you! And I hope you will have enough time off, so you will be okay when you start those long hours again!!!
Karen, I hope your computer makes it to you okay. Sometimes the jangling (is that a word?) isn't good for its "innards". So sweet of your DH to mail it to you right away! Hope you're having fun!!!
Claire, Glad you can keep exercizing, even with your sore ankle!
Kymnie, Please let us know what your doctor says! I think we need to have a party soon just to thank NM for all the help and advice she has given us....such a sweetie.
I better end now, before my post goes "poof". Happy Thursday Girlies!!!
Kathy

Okay, add this to the list of weird places to find your keys. Been looking for 2 days, even the strange places someone (NM?) mentioned finding keys. Just found them, in the LINING of my purse! Outside pocket I always put them in apparently developed a rip.....boy were they hidden!! Anyway, hope that brings a laff to someone.

!!!!
good job!
BTW, your onc's office should have gotten you in for an emergency visit., You might want to mention that to your onc. (When I was an Onc RN there was a standing rule, pt on chem + suspicion of infection = seen the same day by SOMEONE in the office. If not able to get in the same day, refer to the ER and call the ER doc with instructions re: special handling of chemo patient. This is standard, and your onc's office should be following it.)
Apologies for the funny spacing, Sadie was "helping" me type this post.
