Doxie my husband had one years ago (late 90's) that was very painful. He happen to be on a business trip in Texas. They kept him in the hospital overnight. Lucky for him he passed it. Never had another one.
I have been told that should drink enough water and that too much coffee and/or soda can cause this. Before diagnosis I hardly drank water and if I did drink something it was diet soda. Never had a kidney stone. Go figure.

I drink lots of water, no soda or artificial drinks, only two cups of coffee in the morning, and weak hot tea. You know I take care of my health and eat well. Rather odd.

I read that too much calcium can cause them. I was taking a lot of calcium and vit D. Didn't get stones but it did spill over into my blood. Damned if you do, damned if you don't!

So sorry Doxie. I have no experience with these. Hope that you are able to get relief from the pain. Does the doc have a Plan B to figure out what else is causing the blockage?

I won't see the Urologist until two weeks from now. Of course if I end of in the ER before that, the appointment will be moved up. Ironic, right?
The blockage could be a UTI in the kidney. I was treated for a mild kidney infection earlier. I'm not showing any signs of an infection though. UTIs can cause stones, but the two UTIs I've had in the last 6 months have been caught early. Or it could be kidney cancer, which is unrelated to BC. I'm much more at risk of BC recurrence and a new BC occurrence than kidney cancer and BC doesn't metastasize into the kidneys, so I'm not worrying about cancer. It's one of those things that has to be ruled out though. I suppose he will send me for some other imaging, CT or x-ray.

Doxie--calcium excess can definitely cause them, they will proably tell you to avoid dairy, especially cheese. My Dad's hair turned from dark brown to gray overnight when he had his first one. The doctor told us it's as close as a man will ever get to a labor pain....HA. If you are screening your urine, (so scientific) when you pass it, it looks like a tiny fleck of pepper....
Sometimes they can dissolve them with drugs, or do something with sound waves. They put you in a tub of water and bounce sound waves off the area to crunch up the stone. You feel like you've been beaten but it avoids a surgery. If they are lodged in a ureter tube, they will go in and retrieve it surgically. May this pass quickly.......

I"m always a bit obsessive about researching med stuff. There are 7 different kidney stones. All caused by different combos of too much, too little, too acidic, too alkaline, genetics, infection, etc. Guess I'll have to wait until the makeup of the stones are determined. Going to Minneapolis next week for work. Hope nothing happens before or during that trip.

Doxie-I had a kidney stone when I was 8 months pregnant. Felt like labor but it wasn't. Mine passed in 24hrs and was from taking the "wrong" type of calcium supplements, so I was told. I was young and never asked what the "right" kind was. I steer clear from calcium supplements now. They found my stone in a simple X-ray (which is really an amazing image since I was preggo at the time). I still have it.
Hopefully yours will pass quickly. Keep us posted. I lurk here too.

So if you passed the stone, is it now in your bladder? Or do you have more? I'm wondering if they will wait and see with my right stones that seem to be causing no problems. The wonder if the left kidney blockage, the cause undetermined. It's the lovely waiting game we all hate to play. Good thing I'm busy at work.

Ha Ha! So the takeaway is that if men had labor, their hair would turn grey afterwards. I'm not so sure that is not true for most women anyway.

NavyMom -- haven't seen you for awhile. Hope things have been really well for you and yours. Every day is something of an adventure ( lots of storms in our area today ) -- originating from Texas. Its all just in the doing and in being grateful that you can.
