    To be nobody-but-yourself--in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else -- means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting.

    An oldie but such a great one:

    Courage doesn't always roar.
    Sometimes courage is the quiet voice
    at the end of the day, saying,
    "I will try again tomorrow."

    Without forgiveness, we remain tethered to the person who harmed us.
    We are bound with chains of bitterness, tied together, trapped.
    Until we can forgive the person who harmed us,
    that person will hold the keys to our happiness; that person will be our jailor.
    When we forgive, we take back control of our own fate and our feelings.
    We become our own liberators.
    Forgiveness, in other words, is the best form of self-interest.
    This is true both spiritually and scientifically.
    We don't forgive to help the other person.
    We don't forgive for others.
    We forgive for ourselves.

    Desmond Tutu

    Success

    They have achieved success
    who have lived well,
    laughed often, and loved much;
    who have enjoyed the trust of
    pure men and women,
    the respect of intelligent people and
    the love of little children;
    who have filled their niche and accomplished their tasks;
    who have left the world better than they found it
    whether by an improved poppy,
    a perfect poem or a rescued soul;
    who have never lacked appreciation of Earth's beauty
    or failed to express it;
    who have always looked for the best in others and
    given them the best they had;
    whose lives were an inspiration;
    whose memory a benediction.

    It's been a quiet week on this thread. I hope you all are doing fine and have just been too busy to spend time on the computer.

    As always, thanks for the continued quotes, Jackie.

    I keep reminding myself to breathe deeply and believe things will work out. Reminding myself that stress is bad for BC.

    I work at one of the State universities severely suffering from the budget mess. Layoffs have started and many more are inevitable. I may or may not be spared, at least through the summer months. Thankfully I can keep my health insurance through the summer as long as I pay the State. I don't want to have to switch all my doctors then maybe get them all back in the fall. How messy.

    We’re watching the state univ. crisis with apprehension (especially Chicago State & Governor’s State because of the largely disadvantaged populations they serve). I never bought into our current Gov.’s folksy speaking style and wardrobe (MBA and megabucks put the lie to that), nor did I ever believe that success as a venture capitalist (and complete lack of electoral experience, even in grade school) translates to competency in running a state. So many friends said, “how bad could he be?--his wife and best friend (our mayor) are Democrats.” Well, I knew in my gut he was cut from the same cloth (khaki & madras variety) as the Koch bros. and ALEC, and he is proving to be a disaster for everyone in the state except big businesses and their majority shareholders. And he’s only provoking the Madigan machine's intransigence. I wish there were some way to do a recall a la WI--I think we have to wait for him to do something impeachable. It’s gonna be a long time till 2019....if he loses in 2018.

    ChiSandy, I don't normally do a lot of posting but had to respond to you. I'm born and raised in Chicago and in all my 67 years, the state, city and county has been run by democrats. To blame this mess on one man, Rauner, is so unfair. If anyone is to blame, look to the Madigans, Daleys, Burkes, etc., who have been in control for decades. Their bad (and in a lot of cases criminal) leadership is to blame for the state of affairs. I realize how polarizing politics can be and don't mean to start an argumentative post, just expressing my opinion.

    I blame the whole lot of them, but especially leadership on both sides for decades. Problems can be laid at the feet of both parties and the electorate, as well as state employees. And don't get me started on my own administration....

    I wonder how all this is effecting health care in Illinois. I've heard that providers are turning away state employees unless that can pay up front and wait to be reimbursed. I have dental work next week. I guess I'll find out how they are handling it.

    I'm with BCBS for health insurance. So far so good, but the next set ofBC appointments aren't until May.

    Our state is in a real mess but I do blame Rauner for making cuts to those who need it most. I knew based on his platform that is exactly what he would do. The city politicians aren't responsible for the entire state, which is in a mess. I actually blame many of the governors from both sides.

    and yes Chicago politics has always been a big mess too.

    Doxie -- I'm so sorry you are going through this... job stress is awful.... I quit my job at Coventry right after treatment, they were less than supportive, and I'll leave it at that. Then my next position at OfficeMax moved to Florida when the merger took effect. I'm holding my breath at Allstate now, will hit the two year mark in May. I hope things settle down in our state, this impasse is ridiculous.

    It's also affecting our youth. I sit here in a hotel room in NYC while Ari is auditioning for Queens College in NYC. She was accepted at WIU for cello performance, a fine college, where she really clicked with the professors and the department. But with this budget crisis looming, I'm not sure it's wise to go there, they have already been forced to make cuts. So we are looking at colleges in NY and Florida. My college freshman chose to go to Oklahoma State, where they actively recruit high achieving students.

    I love living in Chicago (ish), am a transplant from Boston. Our youth have been walking out of the state, and this year the state university crisis is pushing more of them out the door.

    Five years ago I felt so uncertain about my prognosis, and so rattled by breast cancer, that I wondered if I would be here to see it. But here it is and now I spend all my free time worrying about how to pay for it, which is a lovely improvement! Smile

    Yes, WIU is in really bad shape also. I'd be worried about sending your daughter thereThis impasse will devastate McComb if it continues into the fall. Low income students simply cannot afford to go to college anywhere in the state without MAP grants, I'm talking about the private colleges also The colleges cannot front the MAP grants like they did this year. At the same time if we advise sending students out of state, we hurt these universities even more. They need tuition $ to survive.

    But I am guilty of doing this.

    I saw this coming a over a year ago and when my daughter was applying to graduate schools last year, I told her to go out of state if she got an equal financial aid offer. I was afraid grad assistants would be eliminated in mid-stream. She got a great package, and though it is 5 hours away, we know it will be honored for the two years she is at the university.

    For this site, we should probably keep the topic to the effect of the budget crisis on health care and services.

    Doxie,

    Though we all have opinions, sometimes quite strong --- other than in the lightest of ways it isn't a very good thing to delve much into politics or religion. I think you are right to sound a wave toward caution. Part of our peace here is mainly avoiding subjects that might affect the overall friendships and camaraderie.

    A beautiful sunny Sunday here and will hopefully stay that way. Our temps are going to stay up ( oh there is a Spring God ) but due to that we will be having possibly several days or rain. I'm just hoping for some light -- even maybe some sun through it all to help keep me steady. I droop badly when there are too many gray days in a row.

    A smile costs nothing but gives much. It enriches those who receive without making poorer those who give. It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None is so rich or mighty that he cannot get along without it and none is so poor that he cannot be made rich by it. Yet a smile cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give them one of yours, as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.

    How true it is that, if we are cheerful and contented, all nature
    smiles, the air seems more balmy, the sky clearer, the earth has
    a brighter green. . . the flowers are more fragrant. . . and the sun,
    moon and stars all appear more beautiful, and seem to rejoice with us.

    We can never untangle all the woes in other people's lives. We can't produce miracles overnight. But we can bring a cup of cold water to a thirsty soul, or a scoop of laughter to a lonely heart.

    Lisa, I graduated from WIU many moons ago and lived in Macomb for 25 years. It has always been recognized for its great music department, as well as its educational department. I think many of the colleges have been forced to make cuts but there are still many outstanding professors there. The college is small enough that students are given lots of attention and TLC. It's a hard decision to make.

    It sounds like Illinois is getting some really nice weather. It was 85 here today in Florida but the breeze made it feel much cooler. We have only a few more weeks and we will be heading home. I think I will be ready as I love springtime in Illinois.

    It's simple things, like a glowing sunset, the sound of a running stream or the fresh smell in a meadow that cause us to pause and marvel at the wonders of life, to contemplate its meaning and significance, who can hold an autumn leaf in their hand, or sift the warm sand on the beach and not wonder at the creator of it all.

    Sometimes a poem is every bit as good as a quote. I love this little poem that says so much to me.

    I do not ask to walk smooth paths
    Nor bear an easy load.
    I pray for strength and fortitude
    To climb the rock-strewn road.

    Give me such courage I can scale
    The hardest peaks alone,
    And transform every stumbling block
    Into a steppingstone.

    Looking for and enjoying beauty is another way to nourish
    the soul. The universe is in the habit of making beauty.
    There are flowers and songs, snowflakes and smiles, acts
    of great courage, laughter between friends, a job well done,
    the smell of fresh-baked bread. Beauty is everywhere, ready
    to nourish the soul. It must only be seen to begin helping us.

    As I experience it, appreciation of beauty is access to
    the soul. With beauty in our lives, we walk and carry
    ourselves more lightly and with a different look in our
    eyes. To look into the eyes of someone beholding beauty
    is to look through the windows of the soul. Any time we
    catch a glimpse of soul, beauty is there; any time we catch
    our breath and feel "How beautiful!," the soul is present.

    When the hard times of life come, we know that no matter how tragic the circumstances seem, no matter how long the spiritual drought, no matter how long and dark the days, the sun is sure to break through; the dawn will come. The warmth of his assurance will hold us in an embrace once again, and we will know that our God has been there all along. We will hear him say, through it all, "Hold on, my child, joy comes in the morning!"

    The value of all service lies in the spirit in which you serve and
    not in the importance or magnitude of the service. Even

    To see the earth as it truly is, small and blue and
    beautiful in that eternal silence where it floats, is to see
    riders on the earth together, brothers and sisters
    on that bright loveliness in the eternal cold--people who
    know now they are truly brothers and sisters.

    YES~~~~!!Thank you Jackie for keeping thread going!! I may be living in AZ but still love my ILLINOIS Group!! Hi NavyMom!!

    All well... had a series of tests done recently to see if a couple of lung nodules were cancerous and were not!!! I have been here in AZ for 5 years and counting and any kind of test for my 2009 surgery or after care has been zero. Other than blood work. I had a Dr. I was recently referred to for a very little growth above my left breast and turned out to be benign but she then preceeded to have me get a baseline for my implants and then the lung nodules came to be after the MRI. After CAT and PET.and MRI.. all ok! I do have a ruptured right implant and  does not look like it is from outside.  But that will have to be redone I would imagine and have to get informed on that!!SO very grateful to have had this DR take time and an interest and also is on the team with the Breast D.r I am going to for my annual check ups and  wonder how he feels with her taking pver and potentially finding what could of been lung cancer!!!

    Hope all is well overall and still refer breastcancer.org to all I meet who are first comers to this journey!! Hugs to all and will be monitoring all here as I can~!!!

    Love and Big Hugs,

    Donna

    Donna and Navy Mom, it is wonderful to see both of you. Very happy about the lung nodules Donna. How scary !!!! I'm glad for the Dr. who chose to do what it took to not only find out about the nodules but get you to a place that should make anyone comfortable about the state their body is in baseline wise. Hoping your other Dr. will just view it as a positive event -- even providing information for him.

    I do hope both of you and any other Illinois gals will come back to say hi and visit. I guess my heart and soul found a home here and I've never thought of giving it up. I still can get a couple of goose bumps just thinking of this part of BC. Org being the thing that saved me and my sanity way back when in 2007. Each one of you is special to me.

    Many blessings,

    Jackie
