I think the purpose of life is to be useful, to be responsible, to be honorable, to be compassionate. It is, after all, to matter:to count, to stand for something, to have made some difference that you lived at all. -Leo Rosten

Be humble and you will remain entire.
The sages do not display themselves, therefore they shine.
They do not approve themselves, therefore they are noted.
They do not praise themselves, therefore they have merit.
They do not glory in themselves, therefore they excel.

Humility does not mean false modesty. Humility does not mean taking a back seat. When you take a back seat consciously and deliberately in order to show others how humble you are, you are not being humble at all.
False humility is what slaves show to their masters. Slaves know that if they do not obey their masters blindly, if they do not show this kind of outer humility, the master will punish them.
True humility is something totally different; it is the feeling of oneness. Humility means giving joy to others. Here on earth we want to get joy. But how do we get joy? Real joy we get from self-giving, not by possessing or by showing our own supremacy. When we allow others to get joy, then we feel that our joy is more complete, more perfect, more divine. By making others feel that they are either equally important or more important, we show our true humility.

Hello to everyone! I hope you all had a nice Mother's Day weekend.

I don't know about you gals, but I am tired of this gloomy, wet weather. I know we needed the rain but enough is enough. It is messing up my golf and I still haven't got my flower pots planted. I vote for sunshine! :-)

Hope everyone is doing OK. The thread has been pretty quiet again lately so I hope that just means that all is well with most of you and that you are busy!

All progress is made by people of faith who believe in what is right and, what is more important, actually do what is right in their own private affairs. You cannot add to the peace and good will of the world if you fail to create an atmosphere of harmony and love right where you live and work. - Thomas Dreier

We have as well been having way too much rain and gray skies to suit me, Rita. Things do not sound hopeful that it will get better any time soon. Sounds like one decent day then right back to rain or as is taking place here -- serious storms. Not so much tornado- type but too much lightning to suit me and a deluge of water pretty much all at once. We have a high water table but when it comes as fast as yesterday --- nothing much soaks in. Most of our ditches ( some running over to the opposite side of streets were rushing madly towards the lake --- and I'm sure the floodgates were open to keep the lake from over-filling as well. Didn't go see the dam and spill-way but was likely quite a sight.

Awful storm here overnight Wed. into Thurs.--but today (by the time you read this it’l be “yesterday”) was utterly gorgeous--dry, mild (60s), light breeze. Hard to believe that tomorrow it’ll be raw & rainy and Sat.--when I have to drive to Iowa City--they’re calling for temps going up only into the high 40s! Wonder what next week will be like in NC?

    The first step toward greatness is to be honest, says the proverb;
but the proverb fails to state the case strong enough. Honesty
is not only "the first step toward greatness,"--it is greatness itself.

Inspiration is the moment in which the spirit within is accessed and revealed.
Inspiration dawns when something in your outer world sparks a flame within
you and calls forth a message. It arrives to remind you that all your answers
lie inside of you, and that you alone are the wisest wizard in your kingdom.
It is often easy to miss those moments until you learn to truly hear the inner
"ding!" and give it the space to emerge into your consciousness. As you move
toward honoring your inner knowing, you can more easily recognize those
moments of inspiration--many of which can be life-transforming.

To be a beneficial presence in the world,
cultivate a conscious awareness of your unity with Spirit.
Expect good in your own life.
Desire good for all others as well.
See and affirm abundant blessings of peace,
    health, and plenty for everyone.
Align your thoughts with peace and happiness,
and realize that these qualities are your true nature.

When we perform an act mindfully--be it meditating, vacuuming
or playing Scrabble with a child--we nourish ourselves, as well.
Rather than scattering our concentration on a dozen things at
once, we focus. We slow down. We give ourselves time to calm
down from the inside out and the luxury of saying: Nothing is
more important right now than this moment, this deed.
    We
may not get as much done by day's end, but we can feel more
peaceful and satisfied with the work itself. That's a good way
to think of it: Mindfulness is quality time for the soul.

Do you think that this dreary weather is about to move out of the state? I'm sure ready for some sunshine! The weeds are overtaking my flower beds because I haven't been able to get out there and get then cleaned. I finally planted my pots on Sunday. That's the latest that I have got them out in years.

    Hope everyone is doing well!

I'm sure hoping this rain goes away for a day or two. Our report sounds like that is just what will happen, but oh the rain will be back then. Hopefully, only for a short time. I'm tired of rain. I got some weeding done, but they are still laying out there where I left them as I did it late in the day. It will be a day or two will I can get to them.

It's been a quiet week on this site. I'm so glad that you are keeping it up and available for anyone who might need it, Jackie. It certainly served its purpose when we were going through this journey and don't really know why gals aren't responding to it more now. Times change, I guess. Anyway, if you are somebody out there that has been lurking, hop on and somebody will probably follow as there is comfort between those dealing with the same journeys.

Hi all, It must be people trying to catch up on yard work etc in between the showers that is keeping it quiet.

I have been struggling with Dad issues for some time and he is now in the nursing home which riddles me with guilt because I am not able to care for him at home.

My gut has been messed up with what I thought was stress, however my MO felt the change in habits warranted a review so yesterday I had the dreaded colonoscopy. No polyps found, so he biopsied 4 places in the colon to have checked for something called microscopic colitis or any sign of microscopic inflammation. They used the same stuff Michael Jackson O"D'ed on to put me under and it felt like a flaming mushroom cloud going up my arm when she pumped it into my IV.....I told them never again and Dr. said this is how we put people out for everything anymore, and I said well then we won't be doing any more procedures...end of story. Sorry, but I think there are few things in life that can't be negotiated and anesthesia is one of them.....

That's my rant for the day. I loved my GI doctor though--Kenneth Shoenig (probably spelling it wrong) at Digestive Disease Consultants (inside Advocate BroMenn building). He may not like me after my rant in recovery.....

Redheaded, you deserve a big rant. There is a lot of stress going for you. It is hard to have to give over the care of our parent (s) to someone else, and more so if a nursing home. I know people are forgiven for having to address needs in certain ways and I hope you will forgive yourself. I hope the reason is found for your ?colitis as well. I'm sure though it is a relief to know what is not a problem to your colon.

I'll be thinking of you and hoping your path smooths out soon and please don't forget to forgive yourself. Sometimes we just can't be in charge of everything and HAVE to avail ourselves of solutions that seem less than sterling in some ways.

Only the wise person draws from life, and from every stage of it, its true savour, because only he or she feels the beauty, the dignity, and the value of life. The flowers of youth may fade, but the summer, the autumn, and even the winter of human existence, have their majestic grandeur, which the wise person recognizes and glorifies.

Gosh redheaded....that doesn't sound like a pleasant experience. Yikes!

Sorry to hear about your Dad. Putting a parent in a nursing home is a hard thing to do. We held out as long as we could with my mother but she just got where we couldn't give her the care that she needed. I remember that I cried all the way home the first time we left her there. Do not feel guilty about it as there comes a time when it is the best thing for them. Hugs!

Red, sorry the "milk of amnesia" hurt so much before it knocked you out.

I've been quiet because I've been at my folk music conference in the Blue Ridge Mts. of western NC, and the internet here at the retreat center is glacial (when it works). It's also a Verizon and Sprint dead zone, and AT&T seems to be the only one that works. Tomorrow I head east to Hickory to hang out with HappyHammer and mustlovepoodles and play that Vital Touch benefit concert--I fly home Mon. evening. By Tues. Bob's lung scan result report should be in his patient portal. Fingers crossed. Meanwhile, the house is apparently still standing and the kitties haven't invited their buddies over to snort catnip. Not sure how high the pile of dirty dishes in the sink, nor how overflowing the laundry hamper.

For those in the Chicago area, you can get a chance to see & hear me Fri. night June 10 at 9:30 at pH Comedy Theater, 1515 W. Berwyn (Andersonville), Chicago. It's part of their "pHusion" series where they bring in different types of artists & musicians to inspire the improv actors. I'll be doing mostly my funny stuff.

If we could but recognize our common humanity, that we do belong together, that our destinies are bound up in one another's, that we can be free only together, that we can be human only together, then a glorious world would come into being where all of us lived harmoniously together as members of one family, the human family.

Life rushes us along and few people are strong enough to stop on their own. Most often, something unforeseen stops us and it is only then we have the time to take a seat at life's kitchen table. To know our own story and tell it.To listen to other people's stories. To remember that the real world is made up of just such stories.Until we stop ourselves or, more often, have been stopped, we hope to put certain of life's events "behind us" and get on with our living. After we stop we see that certain of life's issues will be with us for as long as we live.We will pass through them again and again, each time with a new story, each time with a greater understanding, until they become indistinguishable from our blessings and our wisdom. It's the way life teaches us how to live. -Rachel Naomi Remen

Rather than accepting that we are the loving beings that He created, we have
arrogantly thought that we could create ourselves, and then create God.
Because we are angry and judgmental, we have projected those characteristics
onto Him. We have made up a God in our image. But God remains who He is
and always has been: the energy, the thought of unconditional love.

Storms here today, and I don't know how long they will last but will come and go. I have had ( so far ) a long week. Doing my own animals, going to a friend's and doing hers ( twice a day ) going twice to see my little lady who is in rehab, and then going twice a day to her home and taking care and playing with the two little dogs there. Today everyone ( at the homes ) will be back so I can go back to concentrating on my house and my patient. I'm glad -- I think my age is showing -- this multi-tasking through a week's worth of days is truly wearing. I'm back-logged with many of my regular duties at home, but it will all get taken up and handled. Hope everyone here is fine. You ( no matter new or older ) are always in my mind, ahem, somewhere.

    Blessings,

    Jackie

Our storms blasted through yesterday, from about 5 pm-3 am. We lost our satellite for awhile (and so some season or even series finales failed to record), but no damage otherwise--all our plants & trees are intact. Sunny, sticky, & hot today--with sky-high allergen levels.

Had my first disturbing dermatology visit. Today was to do a baseline body mole-mapping; but she found a possible basal cell ca (probably seborrheic hyperplasia) on my lower R temple and an irregular dysplastic nevus (ill-defined---hate that term by now--asymmetrical tan-& brown variegated mole) on my upper back--where I couldn’t see it in the mirror. She took a sample of the face lesion (as well as the entire oil gland) and the entire back mole to biopsy. I won’t know the results--and what’s next--for a week. Hope I’m not tempting fate by arranging for the Italy trip in July. If it’s basal cell skin cancer, no problem--cut & done. But if it’s melanoma, all bets may be off.

I hate this waiting for the other shoe to drop---dunno whether it’s a Doc Marten’s work boot or a Louboutin stiletto.
