The first step in the evolution of ethics
is a sense of solidarity with other human beings.
- Albert Schweitzer
Few are the giants of the soul that actually feel
that the human race is their family circle.
- Freya Stark
Kindness is the light that dissolves
all walls between souls, families, and nations.

If we face our unpleasant feelings with care, affection, and nonviolence, we can transform them into a kind of energy that is healthy and has the capacity to nourish us. By the work of mindful observation, our unpleasant feelings can illuminate so much for us, offering us insight and understanding into ourselves and society. -Thich Nhat Hanh

When things are bad, we take comfort in the thought that they could always be worse. And when they are, we find hope in the thought that things are so bad they have to get better. -Malcolm S. Forbes

You cannot fail at being yourself. A cat doesn't try to be a tiger, and you shouldn't try to be something you aren't. You are a process, not a product. Your job is to discover what you are and create that creature. You still won't be perfect, but success isn't about perfection--it is about authenticity. You are a success if you are being your real, authentic self. -Bernie Siegel

The tapestry of life continues to be woven. Occasionally a chance arises to repair an older, tattered piece of the weave. Something happens to jolt our awareness back in time to an event that resulted in tears and rips. With new, more mature vision, we see the circumstances in present time and have compassion for the unclear events of the past. While the new experience is being woven into the design, the old rip is simultaneously being repaired. All is well. -Bessie Senette

Nature tops the list of potent
tranquilizers and stress reducers.
The mere sound of moving water
has been shown to lower
blood pressure.

Storms make oaks take deeper root.

When one begins to practice simplicity, the ego is deprived of the very strategy by which it sustains itself. Nothing will deflate the ego more effectively than to be recognized for what it is. It lives by pretension. It dies when the mask is torn away and the stark reality is exposed to the gaze of others. Simplicity also avails in braking the tyranny of things.Ostentation, artificiality, ornamentation, pretentious style, luxury—all require things. One requires few things to be one's self, one's age, and one's moral, intellectual, or spiritual stature. What one is does not depend upon what one has. -Albert E. Day

Sorry I'm quite late.
The ideals which have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been Kindness, Beauty, and Truth. The trite subjects of human efforts, possessions, outward success, luxury have always seemed to me contemptible.

In a world in which we are exposed to more information, more options, more philosophies, more perspectives than ever before, in which we must choose the values by which we will live (rather than unquestioningly follow some tradition for no better reason than that our own parents did), we need to be willing to stand on our own judgment and trust our own intelligence—to look at the world through our own eyes—to chart our course and think through how to achieve the future we want, to commit ourselves to continuous questioning and learning—to be, in a word, self-responsible. -Nathaniel Branden

The hoarders, who are anxiously worried about losing
something, are, psychologically speaking, the poor
impoverished people, regardless of how much they have.
Whoever is capable of giving of themselves is rich.
Erich Fromm0 -
Strength is a capacity for endurance. One of the dividends of suffering is the universal discovery the we possess a strength within us we never knew we had. Navigating through a difficult episode not only shows us that inner strength is there but convinces us it will always be there to serve us in the future. Overcoming gives us an assurance of personal confidence and value that far exceeds what we thought we possessed before our struggles began.

Just a note today after the quote. I hope you are all enjoying Spring. I can barely see my neighbor's house over on the next street as well as on either side of me. One of the huge benefits of living out 'in the country' two miles from town. This is when I am more energized -- when I see all life springing back up after the long winter sleep and tend to feel more inspiration to make pledges of hopeful outcomes to everything and really good habits -- like long relaxing nature walks. Enjoy. Enjoy.......

Attention to detail is the secret of success in every sphere of life, and little kindnesses, little acts of consideration, little appreciations, little confidences,. . . . they are all that are needed to keep the friendship sweet. -Hugh Black

Character is the product of daily, hourly actions, words and thoughts: daily forgiveness, unselfishness, kindnesses, sympathies, charities, sacrifices for the good of others, struggles against temptation, submissiveness under trial. It is these, like the blinding colors in a picture, or the blending notes of music, which constitute the person. -John MacDuff

You are made in the image of God. You are a co-creator with the creator. Pause then and give thanks for the miracle of selfhood.
Give thanks for yourself, for your health and strength and energy. Ponder the miracle of your body, which, without your conscious thought, controls heartbeat and respiration, digests food, compounds chemicals, renews cells, combats disease, heals wounds, and maintains equilibrium among its huge and intricate array of separate parts. -Wilferd A. "Let us be grateful to people who make us happy: they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom."

"A diamond is merely a lump of coal that did well under pressure."

In every adversity there lies the
seed of an equivalent advantage.
In every defeat is a lesson showing
you how to win the victory next time.
Robert Collier0 -
A smile costs nothing but gives much. It enriches those who receive without making poorer those who give. It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None is so rich or mighty that he cannot get along without it and none is so poor that he cannot be made rich by it. Yet a smile cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give them one of yours, as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.

Whatever our individual troubles and challenges may be, it's important to pause every now and then to appreciate all that we have, on every level. We need to literally "count our blessings," give thanks for them, allow ourselves to enjoy them, and relish the experience of prosperity we already have. -Shakti Gawain

Instead of comparing our lot with that of those who are more fortunate than we are, we should compare it with the lot of the great majority of our fellow humans. It then appears that we are among the privileged. -Helen Keller

It's been said that to wonder is to begin to understand. Wonder most definitely creates possibilities! Where's your sense of wonder? Have you gotten so bogged down in the minute-to minute "stuff" that life has become dull? Bring forth your curious, creative, sense of wonder and dust if off -- lighten up and wonder about everything! We are all amazing and awesome beings and our world is extraordinary even when days may be dark. A sense of wonder reminds of just how vast the unknown is and how much we have to learn each day.

There is hope if people will begin to awaken that spiritual part of
themselves, that heartfelt knowledge that we are caretakers of this planet.Brooke Medicine Eagle

"Instead of cataloguing your flaws, shortcomings, and everything you lack, inspire inner growth by focusing on your gifts, strengths, and yearnings, and devote yourself to making them flourish. The self needs a committed gardener."

The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction.
