Let me tell you a secret, which ought not to be a secret, seeing it is written in the Scriptures--be honest and your whole body will be full of light; and this of every kind; you will actually see further and see clearer than shrewd and cunning men, and you will be less liable to be duped than they, provided that your honesty be combined with a determination to protect honesty, and to discountenance every kind of brand. -Edward Irving

And when we come to think of it, goodness is uneventful. It does not flash, it glows. It is deep, quiet, and very simple. It passes not with oratory, it is commonly foreign to riches, nor does it often sit in the places of the mighty: but may be felt in the touch of a friendly hand or the look of a kindly eye.

It was inevitable, I suppose, that in the garden I should begin, at long last, to ask myself what lay behind all this beauty. When guests were gone and I had the flowers all to myself, I was so happy that I wondered why at the same time I was haunted by a sense of emptiness. It was as though I wanted to thank somebody, but had nobody to thank; which is another way of saying that I felt the need for worship. That is, perhaps, the kindliest way in which a person may come to his or her God. There is an interminable literature on the origins of the religious impulse, but to me it is simpler than that. It is summed up in the image of a person at sundown, watching the crimson flowering of the sky and saying--to somebody--"Thank you."

It's simple things, like a glowing sunset, the sound of a running stream
or the fresh smell in a meadow that cause us to pause and marvel
at the wonder of life, to contemplate its meaning and significance.
Who can hold an autumn leaf in their hand, or sift the warm white sand
on the beach, and not wonder at the Creator of it all?
Wendy Moore0 -
I find nature so nourishing. I love to hike, especially in the mountains. When I'm walking in nature, I feel in awe of the wonder of creation. Nature is full of surprises, always changing, and we must change with it. In nature, the soul is renewed and called to open and grow. In the wilderness, you're up against whatever nature brings you--the dangers as well as the beauty.
Linda Leonard0 -
A greater poverty than that caused by lack of money is the poverty of unawareness. Men and women go about the world unaware of the beauty, the goodness, and the glories in it. Their souls are poor. It is better to have a poor pocketbook than to suffer from a poor soul.
Jerry Fleishman0 -
You cannot fail at being yourself. A cat doesn't try
to be a tiger, and you shouldn't try to be something
you aren't. You are a process, not a product. Your job
is to discover what you are and to create that creature.
You still won't be perfect, but success isn't about
perfection--it is about authenticity. You are a success
if you are being your real, authentic self.
Bernie Siegel0 -
What do we live for if
not to make life less difficult

Studies of volunteers have shown there is a benefit to performing acts of love for other people. The irony is that it is actually in your best interests be selfless. The things you do for the benefit of others not only make you feel fulfilled, they increase your chances of living a long and happy life. Remember that an act of love always benefits at least two people. -Bernie Siegel0 -
When we don't take life slowly, piece by piece, we avoid the greatest discovery of all, the person within. When our attention to persons, places, things is deliberate and steady, the beauty within the object of our focus shines forth, and we, too, are made more beautiful in the process. - unattributed

"You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them."
-- Maya Angelou0 -
Perhaps the clearest and deepest meaning of brotherhood is the ability to imagine yourself in the other person's position, and then treat that person as if you were him or her. This form of brotherhood takes a lot of imagination, a great deal of sympathy, and a tremendous amount of understanding.
Obert C. Tanner

We collect data, things, people, ideas, "profound experiences," never penetrating any of them. . . But there are other times. There are times when we stop. We sit still. We lose ourselves in a pile of leaves or its memory. We listen and breezes from a whole other world begin to whisper. -James Carroll

The splendor of the rose and the whiteness of the lily do not rob the little violet of its scent nor the daisy of its simple charm.
If every tiny flower wanted to be a rose, spring would lose its loveliness. -Therese of Lisieux

I believe that all people's lives will be filled with constant, unexpected encouragements. . . if they make up their minds to do their level best each day of their lives—that is, try to make each day reach as nearly as possible the high water mark of pure, unselfish, useful living. - Booker T. Washington

Real education should educate us out of self
into something far finer--
into a selflessness which links us with all humanity.
Lady Nancy Astor0 -
The perfume of sandalwood, the scent of bay leaf and jasmine, travel only as far as the wind. But the fragrance of goodness travels with us through all the worlds. Like garlands woven from flowers, fashion your life as a garland of beautiful deeds. -the Buddha

It's not how much you accomplish in life that really counts, but how much you give to others. It's not how high you build your dreams that makes a difference, but how high your faith can climb. It's not how many goals you reach, but how many lives you touch. It's not whom you know that matters, but who your are inside. Believe in the impossible, hold tight to the incredible, and live each day to its fullest potential. You can make a difference in your world. - Rebecca Barlow Jordan

Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and pain of it no less than in the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it, because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace.
Frederick Buechner

What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think.
This rule, equally arduous in actual and intellectual life, may serve
for the whole distinction between greatness and meanness. It is
the harder, because you will always find those who think they know
what is your duty better than you know it. It is easy in the world
to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after
our own; but the great person is one who in the midst of the crowd
keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.
Ralph Waldo Emerson0 -
Your best shot at happiness, self-worth, and personal satisfaction—the things that constitute real success—is not in earning as much as you can but in performing as well as you can something that you consider worthwhile. Whether that is healing the sick, giving hope to the hopeless, adding to the beauty of the world, or saving the world from nuclear holocaust, I cannot tell you. - William Raspberry

I remember the morning that I first asked the meaning of the word "love. . . ." Miss Sullivan put her arm gently round me and spelled into my hand, "I love Helen."
"What is love?" I asked. . . .
"Love is something like the clouds that were in the sky before the sun came out," she replied. . . . "You cannot touch the clouds, you know; but you feel the rain and know how glad the flowers and the thirsty earth are to have it after a hot day. You cannot touch love either; but you feel the sweetness that it pours into everything. Without love you would not be happy or want to play."
The beautiful truth burst upon my mind--I felt that these were invisible lines stretched between my spirit and the spirits of others. -Helen Keller0 -
Self-respect cannot be hunted. It cannot be purchased. It is never for sale. It cannot be fabricated out of public relations. It comes to us when we are alone, in quiet moments, in quiet places, when we suddenly realize that, knowing the good, we have done it; knowing the beautiful, we have served it; knowing the truth, we have spoken it.

Your worth is not measured by what you do. Nor can you calculate the degree of your worthiness by what you possess. Your worth is a function of your being. Your being is colorless, genderless, and believe it or not, ageless. Your being is worthy of honor, admiration, and respect. It is a vessel of love and light. It is a beacon of inspiration. - Iyanla Vanzant

Our "Rainbows and Butterflies" are the small miracles of our life -
the little things that are so easy to overlook,
yet so awe inspiring when we take a moment
to notice and to pay attention.
Give thanks for the rainbows, for the butterflies,
for all God's creatures - large and small,
for the bright blue sky and the soft fog and the gentle rain,
for the tree veiled in the season's first frost,
for the baby's laugh,
for the touch of a hand and the whispered "I love you."
- Jonathan Lockwood Huie0 -
As selfishness and complaint

pervert and cloud the mind,
so love with its joy
clears and sharpens the vision.
- Helen KellerLove is the greatest force for good.
- Jonathan Lockwood Huie0 -
One is happy as a result of one's own efforts--once one knows the necessary ingredients of happiness--simple tastes, a certain degree of courage, self-denial to a point, love of work, and, above all, a clear conscience.

The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes
but in having new eyes.
- Marcel Proust0 -
If I can think of myself as loved, I can love and accept others.
If I see myself as forgiven, I can be gracious toward others.
If I see myself as powerful, I can do what I know is right.
If I see myself as full, I can give myself freely to others.
