Character is the product of daily, hourly actions, words and thoughts: daily forgiveness, unselfishness, kindnesses, sympathies, charities, sacrifices for the good of others, struggles against temptation, submissiveness under trial. It is these, like the blinding colors in a picture, or the blending notes of music, which constitute the person.

I wish you humor and a twinkle in the eye.
I wish you glory and the strength to bear its burdens.
I wish you sunshine on your path and storms to season your journey.
I wish you peace--in the world in which you live and in the smallest corner
of the heart where truth is kept.
I wish you faith--to help define your living and your life.
More I cannot wish you--except perhaps love--to make all the rest worthwhile. -Robert A. Ward

Don't expect perfection and things to go the way you want them to when it comes to people, business, your prospects, and your social life. When things don't go according to your desires, when the weather of life is foul, be creative and consider what may be the higher reasons why this is happening and why you must adjust. Perhaps it's to gain forbearance, patience, inner strength, flexibility, or the ability to withhold criticism while serving as a loving model.

    Hello everyone

I just finished my lumpectomy surgery at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago. However, I won't be able to go to downtown for radiation therapy. Are there are any recommendations you can give me for radiation oncologists / hospital close to northwest suburbs that you liked working with (besides Northwest Community). Northshore is accessible to me but not NW Lake Forest. I work close to O'Hare airport so if there is any recommendations in Lutheran General, that might work on my way back. Were you able to drive after radiation? Please let me know. Thanks!

I will see if Sandy is available. I think she is familiar with most of those places you mentioned. I'm sorry I'm getting here late. I came home from work late and no time to check here. I will mention to Sandy that you'd like some input. Good for you on getting through the lumpectomy. Hoping any tx. is smooth for you and w/o stress.

Thank you. I did find out where Sandy went and that is still a little away from where I live and work.

Hopeful, LindaB (who had the same dx & treatments as I did, and only about a few weeks behind) had her care at Lutheran General (part of the Advocate system), with good results. Lutheran has very good oncologists. If you want to get your treatments en route to or from work and would like to use the NorthShore system, I'd suggest Glenbrook Hospital's branch of Kellogg Cancer Center. It's only about half a mile off the Tri-State.

Riding out a tornado watch (not a "warning," thank goodness--one of those a year, such as we had this summer, is one too many). Storm rolled through here with no damage. (Unlike the summer derecho). Temps dropping like a rock--60F now (going down into the 30s tonight), was 75 earlier this afternoon. Still windy, patio chairs & tables sopping wet, so outdoor restaurant dining season may be out of the question till spring. (Not sure if any of those tents & canopies withstood the high winds).

Thanks so much Sandy. Glenbrook is definitely doable compared to Evanston. Are there any particular RO you recommend at Glenbrook and Luthern General? I can look them up and make the appointments.

I don't know the ROs at Glenbrook, hopeful. I had Dr. Shaikh at Evanston--perhaps he's also on staff at Glenbrook? lindab 142 can tell you who she used at Lutheran.

Hopeful, Dr. William D. Bloomer, head radiologist at Evanston was wonderful, gentle, and kind and is, I believe, also at Glenbrook. If you google you can find out about him. Let us know who you use.

It's true that we live in a harsh world, but it's also true that gentleness invades that harshness with its own kind of beauty. We see it in the way a mother cradles a newborn baby, in the eyes of a father roughhousing with a preschooler, in the silence of a setting sun, in the affectionate caress of a lifetime lover and friend, in the peace that settles during an anxious prayer, and in a thousand ways more.
Yes, gentleness is invading our world today. The only question is whether or not you've joined the revolution. -Mike and Amy Nappa

    TheArt of Common Sense
    Wilferd A. Peterson

Common sense is a personal compass for guidance around the rocks and shoals. Common sense is not based on theory; it is not a hypothesis. It is life acted out, it is discoveries made in the crucible of existence. It is the tried and tested experiences of humankind Common sense sits in judgment on the centuries, on every science, every religion, every art, every government. It is based on what has been proved true, sound and practical. Common sense is the voice of the ages. It is the distilled essence of what people have learned about life as expressed in the proverbs and maxims of all nations. "That person is happy who lives on his or her own labor," observed the Egyptian. "Just scale and full measure injure no person," recorded the Chinese. "Examine what is said and not who speaks," said the Arabian. "An idle brain is the devil's workshop," wrote the English. Common sense is pragmatic. It is what William James called "the cash value of an idea." It is a method that works, a truth that can be applied. Common sense is the common denominator of intelligence, the key to right answers. Common sense recognizes the utter senselessness of war, the irrationality of using death, suffering and destruction as a way of settling disputes.
Common sense observes that crime does not pay, that murder will be found out, that the law of compensation works relentlessly and cannot be escaped. Common sense is the rock on which every enduring institution and organization must be built. Common sense is the law of God written into the nature of the universe. It is the sum total of the workable findings of people in their long evolution toward the light. Common sense is dynamic, not static. It change as time goes on.
The art of common sense is applying the best wisdom we know today based on all our yesterdays.

And when we come to think of it, goodness is uneventful. It does not flash, it glows. It is deep, quiet, and very simple. It passes not with oratory, it is commonly foreign to riches, nor does it often sit in the places of the mighty: but may be felt in the touch of a friendly hand or the look of a kindly eye. -David Grayson

The simplification of life is one of the steps to inner peace. A persistent simplification will create an inner and outer well-being that places harmony in one's life. For me this began with the discovery of the meaninglessness of possessions beyond my actual and immediate needs. -Peace Pilgrim

A garden that never died eventually would weary. Robbed of springtime, unacquainted with the extraordinary perfume that rises from the soil after it's had its rest, the garden that winter doesn't visit is a dull place. The return every spring of earth's first freshness would never be kept if not for the frosts and rot and ripe deaths of fall. So when I go out from the garden for the last time in autumn, I leave the gate open behind me.

    Be Impeccable With Your Word.

    Speak with integrity.

    Say only what you mean.

Avoid using your word to speak against yourself

    or to gossip about others.

Use the power of your word

The soul grows into lovely habits as easily as into ugly ones, and the moment a life begins to blossom into beautiful words and deeds, that moment a new standard of conduct is established, and your eager neighbors look to you for a continuous manifestation of the good cheer, the sympathy, the ready wit, the comradeship, or the inspiration, you once showed yourself capable of. Bear figs for a season or two, and the world outside the orchard is very unwilling you should bear thistles. -Kate Douglas Wiggin
