Rita I can't believe your'e a Cubs fan:( Oh, it is a sad day for me....you should go see the White Sox - they are a much better team:)  We are going to the White Sox game tomorrow and then to the Kane County Cougars with my kids tomorrow. I am hoping for clouds so that I don't burn. It is supposed to be over 90 I think tomorrow.

Wendy the Younger - such a gross story, BUT it made me laugh.

My hair started coming out in the shower today. So nasty! I have a wig appt tomorrow, and I am taking an old friend who will be sure to make me laugh.

I have been feeling good all week, but all of a sudden just achy and tired. Probably nothing I guess. Did anyone ever have like a raised node (or something) leading off from the sentinel node biopsy scar into the breast? I noticed it this morning when I work up which was odd. My arm and back had been achy at night for a couple of days before that but I didn't think much of it.

Anyway have a great weekend eveyone. I hope you are all doing something fun. If you have kids or grandkids, I am assuming Kung Foo Panda is on the schedule!!

Dang - I just can't keep up with you girlz! I need to hire a personal assistant to keep me updated and informed about you all!

    --------------------------------------------

blackjack - I'm hoping you're feeling better every day! I'm thinking about you and wishing you a speedy recovery! You're a real trooper...

WENDREW - I am so happy about your results! The epiderals suck and the PT (pure torture) sucks, but atleast you know it's NOT mets. Take that vert for spin this weekend! Hey...do you want to meet at Dockers on Sunday?...that would be fun! We could toast your results.

karin - Rest my foot!? No way no how! LOL...thanks though...I'll be starting PT soon...hopefully that will help!

Julie - Gosh...hang in there...I SO KNOW how you feel...it really will get better! Really it will!

Rita - My week was okay....just okay, though. I'm looking forward to heading out your way...Starved Rock here we come! Are you driving the Cubs cart there! LOL That's SO AWESOME about your tickets! Yeah!

MaryJane/(Rita) - OMG - I can't believe you mentioned Mt. Vernon! I traveled there (business) many times...I stayed at a hotel on the Rock River! I had to go there to press proofs in Mt. Morris...? I had to approve the printing colors of a direct mail catalog I designed. Next time we get together...I will explain. Gee...I cannot remember the name of the hotel that I stayed at!

Jule - When my hair started falling out, it was quite scary. But you will get used to not having it...remember...it's TEMPORARY! If that node keeps bothering you...get it checked...don't want to scare you, but better safe than sorry.

    --------------------------------------

Tonight I went to my oldest nieces high school graduation...I sobbed the whole time! I am such a whimp. But I kept thinking back to the day she was born...I was an Auntie for the FIRST TIME! She brought so much joy into my life...I am so proud of her...academically, she has done great! But she has struggled with body image issues...for NO GOOD REASON! She's truly a gem...but she is leaving for college in August, so I want to spend as much time with her this summer as possible...

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND...I just do not have time to address all of you individually...

WOW - our group has increased...Luv ya ALL!

Morning Girls!  So humid out....we had the AC on last night.  I know, I know.  Wimps!  But I had my coffee out on the deck this am and it was so quiet...all I heard was the hum of AC's so I guess we aren't the only wimps around here.

Laura....hmmm, Dockers in my little bitty Z?  Yeah..gee...that sounds like fun!  You can bring the crane to lift me out!  And you do know that now you have me totally freaked out about the epidural!!!  I did have one the night before I had to have surgery, but I was in a haze of Morphine so I don't remember too much about it.  I didn't think it was too bad.  And truthfully, the horrible, sucky pain in my thigh every frickin morning???  Nothing can top that.  I actually broke down and had a WHOLE vicodin for breakfast - just so I could start to move and stretch and do my exercises..now feeling fairly good.  PT will be fine....I'm a hard worker if I know there is a chance I can rid myself of the pain.

Jule....I would ask whatever doc you see next to take a look at your nodule.  Like Laura says...better safe than sorry.  A few of us have had those and for us it was just scar tissue/rad damage.  Ask about massaging the area....and about your hair?  It will come back but I know that really doesn't help TODAY, does it?  Not much help to you but here's a hug...just for you...

Blackjack....How are you doing?  Up at the lake?

Connie I guess is winning big and will be treating us to dinner next time...gosh, I can be so generous with her money!  Good thing she's not around to read this!  And as long as she isn't....so when do you think we should "surprise" her up at the lake?

What's everybody up to this weekend?  Anything fun?  I hope so.  Seems very cloudy out...I'll have to check the weather and see what we are in store for today and tomorrow.  With this humidity I notice something I have never had before...curly, frizzy, BIG hair!  You should see me in the morning!  DH cannot believe how much hair I have...if I get out today I think I will make a stop at Walgreens and pick up some of that "Frizz-ease" product.  Sure never needed that before!  But it's hair....and that's OK!!!  See Jule....it comes back and then we started COMPLAINING again!  It was great to just pick a wig and walk out the door!

Everyone...have a wonderful day!  I plan to take it easy and enjoy my little vicodin buzz...it's kinda fun!

    Good Saturday morningYell

Yikes, more rain today and from the looks of things, most of the week.  What a way to start rads.  That's what I get for being such a gripe yesterday.  I'm ok with everything today.  Usually takes me a day to calm down though I still feel I should have gotten the packet yesterday.

Gosh, I looked at my hair this morning and it seemed, though light, a lot thicker.  Mind you there is still scalp and plenty of it, but I can see that it's filling in and maybe in a month or so I can start thinking of  something  to try and do with it.  Took a long hard look at we obviously have a hole in our rain gutter.  When I was getting Buddy's water bucket this big drop fell directly on my head---and then again when I put the bucket back.

The minute I got done I rushed in and washed my hair.  Figured whatever MUCK was in that gutter I would either be bald permanently in that spot or my hair would grow in much quicker and exactly the color I want it.  If the latter is the case...I'm not letting Denny clean that gutter and I'm saving any leftovers to share.

Going to be quite humid from the sound but we are not ready to put the air on yet.  It will get nicer ( I sure hope ) and we can wait yet awhile.

Well, I'll be checking back in later.

    Talk to ya'll soon.

Wendrew...I didn't mean to freak you out! I meant it just sucks to have to deal with it all. I never had an epideral...so I have no clue what if "feels" like. Have you ever seen a pain management specialist? After 8 months of horrific pain from my mast and node removal, I finally did. He gave me three injections and they worked. He told me most of the patients he treats have back problems. He's at Good Shepherd...if you want his name.

jackie - Good luck with rads...you will do fine. And stay away from gutters, girl! LOL  Smile

    Hi ladies:

I am fine.  Thanks for wondering.  I have been busy closing up my classroom.  Yesterday was my last day.  I came home with about twelve layers of dust on me.

I am coming to Starve Rock. My dh and I like to cylce through the MI canal (well, not through it, but on the path next to it).  We will do that on Friday and then will collapse Friday night.  Unfortunately there is nothing available for us overnight in the Lodge, so we are staying Friday night in Peru or Ottowa.  I do not have my geography straight, but will figure it out and get the reservation. He will cycle or hike while I meet up with some of you.  Please let me know where we are going.  I am excited wherever we go.

I am so looking forward to summer!

I have had a few scares in that (like Wendy).  I have that disk issue, but then I never know if it is in fact that.....or....hymm...if you know what I mean.  The pain "travels" and so it keeps me wondering.  I also am the MRI phobic and so my "two-week rule" before going to the doctor becomes the "three week" rule as I just want the damn pain to go away so I do not need to do the MRI.  They give me Xanax before I go, but I just hate it so much.  Connie's story moved my three-week rule to four weeks. Only kidding!  I would be afraid of the mri even without Connie's horror story.  I actually have been in so many mri's that I should look into buying my own so I can climb in ....in the comfort  of my own home, after a liter of wine.

I have made a list of so many things I want to do during the summer.  One is to lose 30 pounds before I see you in Utica.  That will not happen.  I also am going to get that avitar up and also send some pics of my grandchild.  I believe we had some directions out there on both efforts.  If any one can send those, I would be better able to move on that.

Anyway, have a happy weekend.  We are doing theater tonight and then the the Jazz Festival in Millennium Park tomorrow!

Hi. LAura and Wendy thanks for the respone. The node (whatever it is on my breast) is a clearly defined ridge on the outside of my breast which has the tumors. I am going to the doctor for chemo on Wednesday, and so I guess I'll wait until then. It is so odd and sore on that part. This morning there was no ridge but it is clearly defined tonight.

So I went for my wig fitting with a close friend of mine. I went ahead and had my hair cut there so that the wig could be more easily fitted. I have about an inch of hair all over my head and it itches.  I left with the wig which I like, and then promptly left it at home tonight to go to the baseball game with just a ballcap on. I didn't want anyone spilling beer or mustard on my new hair:) Silly huh?

    Hi allSmile

Jule, it's perfectly understandable...and besides you were probably cooler with the ball-cap then the wig.  Your hair ( what is left ) will itch and maybe even hurt a bit.  I had mine cut very short and then when it really started coming out in gobs I just went and had it shaved.  A little extreme, but it was easier for me to feel like what was wrong with me wasn't so devastating.  I did not lose my eyebrows and other body hair until I started my Taxotere.  The hair on my head started coming back in right after my second Taxotere.  My head started really itching and after looking closely I discovered my hair coming back.

Susan...loved the liter of wine before getting into your own private MRI machine.  I am claustrophobic in those things too so I don't blame anyone for getting anxious ( short for totally terrified ) when they need that test.

Blackjack, hope your getting better and better as time goes on.  Guess the upside is the comfort after all this will last forever.  Hope it hurries.

Another hot, humid day here no at least no rain.

Susan, about that wt.  I can't do much for exercise right now and I too have a lot of wt. to make go away somehow. My nutritionist friend gave me some dipping oil yesterday ( very tasty I might add ) and said to use it mainly at what I thought might be the biggest meal I would eat on any given day.  Supper for me is the one....and the one your more likely to be more quiet after.  She said to take just one tbsp. in a small bowl and then cut off a hunk of good bread and dip in the oil and eat....the dipping oil which is olive oil and spices is very tasty, but do this only once a day and about 20 minutes before you eat.  You will eat less because you will fill up faster. She said her Dr. told her that the olive oil is like Draino for the body...nothing can stick to your arteries with daily use.  Also, she said her Dr. told her to walk for 30 minutes every day....not fast or slow, just walk and don't break it up into segments---like 15 mins twice a day....needs to be continuous---rain or shine or snow.  This sounds doable to me.  And I figure if I don't lose wt. fast, at least with the olive oil I would be healthier maybe while I am trying.  I am really noticing my fatigue level in this heat, but it's ok.  I'll keep on, keeping on.

Well, I'm going to get back in the other room and see what's going on.  Will check back later.

Morning Girls!  I am outside and can hardly see the screen but wanted to check in and see if Susan was OK, and you are!  You know...if we all chipped in, we could buy our own MRI machine!  I have an empty basement.......

How did you guys down south fare with the weather yesterday?  I've been thinking about you....

Jule....laughing about the mustard and beer in your "new" hair!  Did you get real hair?  If you got the "fake" stuff...they always tell you to use the shampoo made for wigs and I did buy it BUT the other stuff works just fine as did the reg. hairspray.  If you did indeed get the fake hair ones..DO NOT GRILL IN THEM OR COOK IN THEM OR REACH INTO THE OVEN WITH THEM ON.  And of course....no hairdryers, curling irons etc.  I have the frizzed up messy ones on my shelf!  I used those for cutting the grass.

Hope everybody is doing well....I'm going to spray myself with sunscreen and read and  take vicodin.  Well....I really don't need them if I don't move....but they are fun!!!!

Jule - Glad you found a wig you like. Best wishes to you on Wednesday. Let us know...

WENDREW - LOL OMG - I'll pitch in! That's a great idea...we could have midnight MRI pajama parties! LOL Hope your back isn't too bad today...

It's raining real hard here...when you live in a forest, if the wind blows for 5 minutes...I've got 5 HOURS of cleanup!

Jackie - When we go to Maggianos...they have dipping oil, bread, etc. on the table. When you pour the oil on a plate for dipping, try adding some dried Parmesan cheese to it (the kind in the shake bottle). Yum! Hang in there with the fatigue...you're attitude it great! Keep on truckin'!

    Hi:

I have the avatar thingy!!!!  The picture is not clear like Laura's and everyone else.  Maybe I have to get a close-up.  Enough tech for one day!  I am downtown now.  We went to the Printer Row book fair and everything was going great until a microburst came down.  I feel for the vendors.  My daughter helped with the avatar in two minutes.  I am amazed to see how she just moves about tech with such ease.

Yea Susan!  School is out!  I'm so glad that you're coming to Starved Rock!  That's really neat!

Gosh, I think that summer is finally here!  I hope we can dodge some of the rain that they are still predicting for this upcoming week.  I had lots of water again in my back yard this week.  My flowers are looking pretty good though!

Jackie....good luck with the rads.  I bet you'll do just fine.  You will be surprised how quick you are "in and out" for the rads!  I will be thinking about you.  It was so good to talk to you.  I'm really looking forward to our roadtrip!  We'll have lots of fun!

Wendy the younger...good luck at the oncologist tomorrow.  After tomorrow, you should have your game plan.  You'll know about the port and the type of chemo that you're going to be doing.  I think you'll feel better once you have an idea what is really ahead of you.   Please let me know what you find out when you get home.

It sounds like everyone has had a good weekend.  That's what we like to hear!  :-)

Wendy...glad to hear about your results!  Isn't it strange what we are now thankful for????  They'll have you back in shape in no time at all!

Well, I will take more time tomorrow to catch up on the posts.  You're right, Laura, our group is growing and I think it's great!  I want to address more you personally.  In the meantime, everyone have a good Monday.  I promise to get caught up on the posts!

Hope it's going better for you, Leesa.  Please check in!!!

Blackkjack...hope you are improving every day!  You're too nice to be "under the weather!"

A quick "drive by " to say hello to all of you wonderful IL ladies.  Finally was able to read through the last few posts & kind of catch up - at least on a few things.

Wendy the Younger and Jule - I think you guys are the newest with regard to where you are in treatment; I'm the last in line here, so it's really been helpful for me to follow your stories - because what you are going through now is just weeks away for me.  Seeing that you are doing well & joking around & being "human" gives me a lot of comfort.

Just an update on my stuff - surgery is still looking to be around the 20th or soon after.   (That knocks me out of the Starved Rock party - boooo hoooo!)

I'll be having an abdominal CT this week to check out the stomach pain situation. Other than that,  a quiet week - just trying to get things in order, shop for nice new recouping jammies, stock up on toiletries, etc.   Guess I'm glad that I have this extra time while awaiting the BRCA tests.

I hope everyone had a nice weekend & has a great week too.

WOW!!!!  These storms are something else! Here in S. Elgin we seemed to be between the horrible stuff...just lots and lots of rain!  How is everyone else faring?

Rita...how's your yard?  I don't think you are  flooded exactly...just lots of puddles, correct?

Jackie/Laura...when we were in Fl 2 years ago I pried the recipe out of Carrabba's for the dipping oil.  Well...only the dry ingredients and not the amounts.  I did some research as it still didn't taste right and I was able to get from their website what type of EVOO they use and it is an import from Italy, sold in this country under the name "Star".  And now I make this all the time.  I don't have the amts so do it to your own taste....Dried basil (I use lots), dried oregano, dried parsley, dried minced garlic, some red pepper flakes (i use hardly any as I don't like this spice), sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.  Make up a big batch and just put it in a baggy.  When you want some...about an hour or so before you..put a NICE amount in a little dish and pour some Star EVOO over it and let it steep.  Then dip away!  Good luck on not licking the dish when you run out of bread.  I can make up some baggies for you two if you would like to try it.  You HAVE to use Star oil tho...and I tried even the very exp. stuff from the Olive Mill...and it just didn't work.

Susan....gosh, you are pretty!  That hair!  I love it!

    Leesa...you feeling ok?

Blackjack...I assume you were boating all weekend???  Are you doing much better?

Kater....GREAT e-mails yesterday!  Ooooooh girls, what Kater and I talked about!!!!

Everybody I missed....I will catch up later.  My breakfast of 1/2 vic and 2 advil have kicked in quite nicely and I am off to the showers.  Hope everyone is well.....

Wendy - I hear ya about the rain.  You & I are not too far from each other.  They were pretty loud last night too.  Rain, rain, go away!  Looks like we've got some nicer weather after today.

Jackie - I'll miss your quotes for the next few days.  Good luck !

Everyone else, have a nice day.  I'm waiting for call-backs from the surgeon & other peeps, so I have to jump off the PC again.

Jackie, I will be thinking about you a lot as you take on this new adventure.

I signed up for a creative writing class this summer at Northwestern  University as I like to write and I have a few pieces in progress. I am kinda terrified. These are the kind of classes whereby you have to share your pieces  in a group (I have taken others in the way past). The group is generally very diverse and I surely will be the oldest one in the class.  I do not worry about being the oldest, I just do not want to be the poorest writer in the class. I am thinking that I may want to do some serious writing when I retire next year, so I should start working up my nerve now. It will be funny to be THE student again.

It is so wet here.  It never stops raining!

blackjack - Rest as much as you can! Sorry you're not healing quicker...but I suspect you're alot like me...EVEN THE FASTEST RECOVERY ISN'T ENOUGH! LOL If b-fast can happen that's great...if not...maybe some other time!

Jackie - I wish you the VERY BEST this week...don't forget we're all there with you...you just can't see us. This part of the "adventure" will be easier...Hang in there...

JulieR - Best wishes to you with all you have going this week...hang in there...gawd...I can so realate!

Susan - A writing class! That's awesome...what fun...I took a watercolor class last summer...sooooo relaxing. Keep us posted about the class...I'm curious...and I'd love to read your works.

    -------------------------

Today - I was absolutely exhausted...I have not been this sleepy/tired since chemo. I hardly made it home tonight...was fighting falling asleep. I don't know why...I have never been this tired just from work and forest chores. I slept well last night...I'm going to take a hot bath tonight...go to sleep early...and I hope I'm back to my ol' self tomorrow!

    Have a great evening!

Hi all-  I've been a very bad Illinois Gal lately.  It's this darn kitchen addition and bathroom remodeling!  I'm thrilled that it's starting, but appalled at how much of my time it is taking.  Geez, it's like having a THIRD job!  We've interviewed architects and contractors, air conditioning guys (doing the whole house which is separate from the addition), plus I'm researching most of the stuff needed for the bathroom on the web.  So far, we've bought a toilet, whirlpool tub, frame-less glass corner shower, a radiator/towel warmer combo (which I'm just hoping works as well as they claim), a (real) antique washstand vanity with mirror, a vessel sink, faucets for the sink and tub, a shower/ massage column, AND a vintage medical/dental cabinet for bathroom storage (Craigs list- SCORE!!!).  And this is just the beginning...   ACK!!!

And from what the builders are saying, the kitchen and garage project will take 7-10 months!!  Here I thought it would done by the fall.  We should have started LAST fall!  But emotionally I was not ready, got to admit that! Heck it was only 3 months ago that I started subscribing to my magazines again!

It's a good thing that I feel comfortable enough to move on like this, but I do have moments where I think "what if the bc pops up again while we are in the middle of this project?"  heck, I worry that my husband will have another heart attack as well.  Can't stop the worry wheels from turning, I guess!

But for all those Illinois Gals just starting out or in the midst of treatment, I'm proof that life does move on!  I had just about the worse you can have (next to mets), did all three treatments (dose dense chemo, surgery, and rads) and wondered if life would ever return to normal.  No, maybe not normal, but darn good!!  The hair is back, I exercise again, my kids are out of college and working, and I'm about to get my dream kitchen.  Wahoo!

I'm still planning on driving to the June meeting at Starved Rock.  Anyone who wants a ride is welcome to come with me- just let me know and we can work out a place to pick you up.  I can carry 7 total.

Blackjack- hugs to you.  So sorry that your recovery is going so slow!  If I can drive you anywhere on a Monday or Tuesday, let me know- those are days that I don't work for Trader Joe's!!

Jackie- Bless you, your attitude is so wonderful!  I would have been so pi$$ed if I had to move away from home for rads.  I'm sending you all the love and good wishes I can!

JulieR- Which surgery did you decide upon?? I think I missed the post with your decision. I'm assuming that you are doing surgery first and then chemo??  If I can do anything, let me know.  Lake Zurich is not that far away.

Wendy the Younger and Jule- hugs and love to you as well.  Your attitudes are so great, no matter the set-backs, I know you are going to make it through everything.

Wendy the wise- I'm sorry to read that you are still having so much pain, hope it's much better soon.  Oh, and I think I got an idea of what those emails were about, just from the one Kater sent today. Oh my!!  LOL, just weird... the new normal!!

Susan, that's exciting about your Northwestern writing class.  I think I'm rather jealous!

Karin & Laura- Sorry to say that I don't yet know when the 2009 Day of Sharing is- probably April again, but that's all I know.

Laura, hope the PT goes well- we need to start walking again!

Well, another contractor is here to talk to us.  Guess I have to choose one of these guys soon!

    Love and hugs to everyone!

Susan...I love your avatar and really like you hair!  A writing class...how exciting.  Remember?  I always said that you had a way with words and should write!  I think this is the perfect fit!  :-)

JanClare...wow!  You've really been busy with your project!  I bet this is going to turn out really well!  I understand that underlying hesitancy to commit to projects, etc. right now.  I finally committed to doing another presentation for the IESA in October.  Last year I just couldn't do it because what if?????  Staying busy tends to drive those thoughts away but they eventually come creeping back in when I least expect it.

Laura...no wonder you're tired.  You're just one busy and dynamic lady!  I think this dreary weather makes us a little more tired than usual, too.  We need that sunshine to perk us up!

Anyone heard from Leesa?  She was having a few problems with the chemo if I remember right.  I hope she's back on track and doing better.

Hope you're feeling stronger every day Blackjack!!!

Wendy...my back yard was not completely flooded as it has been a few times in the past but the waters of the creek were up to the top of the banks and I had VERY LARGE puddles in my back yard.  We've had more than our share of rain.  Gripe, gripe, gripe!!!

Connie, I hope you came home with your pockets filled with bills and change!  But most of all, I hope you had a fantastic trip!

How's your bathroom project coming along, Pat?  About finished?

Brenda..how's it going?  Check in again when you get time!

Well..gotta finish up a few things before I grab my book.

    My Naturapath visit

    CHEESE-DAIRY PRODUCTS

I have not yet summarized what I learned in my 1.5 hour session. It seems you start with a 30 or 40 day "cleansing" diet. As discussed earlier, dairy products are suggested as a no-no....also gluten..for most..

I do not know how to summarize, but here is one thing I thought would help Laura, who told us that she loved cheese but now stays away from it. I was thinking about that when she mentioned romano cheese or parmesan. I bought some sheep romano last week and had it on my RICE PASTA, gluten free.

The naturapath mentioned that if you eat cheese, it should be only goat or lamb/sheep cheese, I later emailed her and asked why.

Here was her answer: So maybe Laura, you can have a little more cheese? I love everything I have tried so far, from Fruitful Yield in S. Elgin OR I'm told Whole Foods has a selection.

    quote

"Hi,  Several reasons, I will mention perhaps the top three or four:

The proteins are digested differently, it is easier to digest.
The body likes it better  :)
It is processed differently and has more enzymes.
It is void of the overmilking blood and lymphocytes that come from sore udders of overmilked dairy cows.  (The FDA increased the acceptable amounts of both allowed in milk and dairy products.)
There is much more concerning large conglomerate inhumane farming practices that I won't go into, including the importation of antibiotic treated cows imported onto"organic" dairies.

I used to tell patients no dairy at all, but this is a bridge of sorts, and I do not like soy cheeses at all.

Hope this is helpful, Dr. Mitchell"
