Jackie - Must be at your end...it's showing up at my end.

Susan - After chemo, my Thyroid went wacko... never had probs b/4 that. I have been on Synthroid since. It's managed to keep the levels where they need to be. I definately think there's a connection. Lots of girls here on the boards seem to have probs with it post treatment.

Has anyone talked to Carol (berry)?

I can't see Laura's picture either.  You'll need to delete some old pictures or upgrade your photobucket account.   I tend to use Imageshack more than photobucket for hosting pictures but I'm not sure what the limit is.

Ritajean - I love going to the riverboat, which is why I avoid it. LOL!

I think we're going into the city today with my son and his girlfriend, and my daughter.  The DH is working from home, but I think I can talk him into quitting early.  My daughter only agrees to going to something "cultural" (i.e. museum) if I also let her go to the big Forever 21 store.  I think that's a compromise I can live with.  I'm looking forward to a nice dinner downtown somewhere.

    Have a great day, ladies!

No pic for me either Laura!

RE"  hypothyroid and breast cancer....they are doing research re: a connection.  I was dx'd hypoT long before rads, but right after being dx'd with bc.  I now wonder if in fact my hypothyroidism had anything to do with me developing bc.  I had no thyroid symptoms and only had the test every 5 years or so, which is the way it is indicated....so I really do wonder about this!  My PCP swears that there is a connection and he does more freq. thyroid testing on women...wish I had had him about 5 years ago!

    Have fun Rene!

Hi Rene and Julie of Chicago.  Glad the test was negative, and Julie, hope you get rid of that drain rather quickly.

I have had some trouble with something called wound dehiscene after the hysterectomy.  Basically, the wound from the incision is reopening in two places. One was about 2 inches long, and one about 3 inches long, but about 3 inches deep also.  They send me a home nurse everyday to "pack it" which is disgusting.  They push about 18 inches of a sterile 1/2 inch wide ribbon into the holes using a sterile q stick, like the ones you get to clean out ears.  All kinds of disgusting yellowish fluid drains during the day. However, that is good as it is not infected.  I hope they will be able to do something next Friday when I see the surgeon again.Itis getting better, but not as fast as I wanted it to.

However, during the hysterectomy, the surgeon did an exploratory lapartomy also and checked out my liver and pancreas where my MRIs had shown spots, and something called a peritoneal washing also.  Totally benign, nothing related to BC or any other form of cancer.  Benign is a good word.

I am still taking 3-4 hour naps everyday while healing up.  It is three weeks ago today.

Change of subject:  My husband was here for the first 2 weeks.  Our kids gave us a surprise xmas gift.  They told us to dress up.  We put on our fanciest clothes.  The kids had a stretch limosene pick us up, and drive us downtown Chicago to the Signature room at the top of the John Hancock building.  NICE!

Looking forward toseeing everyone at Maggianos.

Sharon...   It's so good to hear from you, but I am sorry about your complication. I have taken care of lots of people to whom this happened, and really it does take time. What a great Xmas gift for you and DH. You have some thoughtful kids there. Keep resting, and we are looking forward to Maggianos!

We women are prone to thyroid problems, at least more than men. So far no bc connection found to be connected to hyperthyroid, or hypothyroid. Most guidelines say to test women over 40 yearly with a TSH blood test, and sometimes a T4 with it. Male guidelines say every five years, but some physicians do their's yearly too. Some studies say that if you have had one type of cancer, your chances of getting another are a little higher than average. Thyroids and parathyroids are interesting little glands!

I've taken my son to the airport today, and so it is back to DH and me. Right now it seems peaceful, but by tomorrow I'll be missing them. DH is sleeping: needs to recover from being "on call," so I am being so quiet in the den, and getting some computer time.

I have mounds of dirty towels and sheets from my gang of visitors, so I'd better get busy.

Laura...I couldn't see your pic either at first, but there was a message across it to empty photobucket. I see it just fine now, though.

    Have a nice afternoon all.

Sharon...so sorry to hear that you're having healing problems.  Not really what you planned, was it?  However, I love that BENIGN word!  Yea on the BENIGN!  Hope the surgeon will find a fix for you.

Smerf, always good to see a post from you and you always have so much good info for us.  Isn't it amazing the amount of laundry that piles up and needs to be done when the crew leaves?  I'm still working on mine!

Well, I didn't do too bad at the boat today.  I didn't win any big pots but came home with about $140 extra dollars and we played all day!  We had so much fun and I'm just socking this extra money into my Florida fund!

And speaking about Florida, Connie should be home soon with lots of neat stories to tell about her Christmas in the south!

Well, I have some things that need to be done around here before I collapse in my recliner so I'd better get moving in a different direction.

Mary Jane, we will see you tomorrow night at 6:00.  We'll probably be a little early as I'm not really sure where we're going.  The GPS will probably get us there with no trouble, but I'd rather be early than late.  We're looking forward to the evening!

Catch the rest of you later.  Hope everyone is doing well today!

Oh Rene...what riverboat do you usually go to?  We sometimes get up to Joliet and like both the Empress and Harrah's.  It's probably a good thing that I don't live closer.  I love the boats!

Hello to everyone......sounds like we all had nice Eves and New Year Day in our own ways.....the last of the decorations are indeed out of sight now and the refrigerator is cleaned out of all the varieties of left overs that have collected.

We went to see Seven Pounds, probably should have read a little bit more about it, very sloooooooow moving and somewhat depressing to say the least.

Im a little jittery about all the Dr appts this coming week but they are all mandatory and not really open to discussion so I guess jittery or not they will all happen and then it will be back to work

Hoping that JulieB is feeling as good as possible , still enjoying everyones posts

Laura-I can't see your picture either. How come some of us can see it and others can't?

Rita - Casino again? I can't wait to go again. Elgin is not too far for me. My sister and I have not gone for a long time - I'm feeling the urge..... so I think it's time to go!

Wendy-I have a huge Christmas mess in the basement too - maybe tomorrow it will get cleaned! Out of sight, out of mind Smile

I'm going to ask about a thyroid test too - not aware that it needed to be checked!

Hoping everyone has an enjoyable weekend.

      Morning all!

Sharon....boy, you are having a time of it!  I so remember when I worked for a surgeon, packing a lot of those wounds.  But you did have such a nice time at your dinner.   Your kids are so sweet to do this for you!  And I love anything that says BENIGN.

Smerf....all the docs out here do thyroid testing on women starting at 40, but only every 5 years.  THEN after 50, yearly.  That is what I meant.  I kinda fell thru the 5 year gap, what with moving and getting all new docs so I missed 2 years.  You are right....no connection has been discovered between hypo/hyperthyroid and BC YET!!!  When my PCP told me what he thought about a possible connection I did google hypothyroidism (since this is what I am) and BC and there are so many articles about research and the general thinking.  My onc also feels that they will discover a link between the two that with other factors, increases your risk.  I guess I am still looking as to why I got BC.  Who knows really!  There is probably a link thru my Dad and Paternal Aunt, just no test available yet to pin it down.  So...was it my thyroid, my Dad having BC in his mid 80's, my taking estroven for hot flashes for a year, that last martini, all that yogurt I ate to stay healthy ?????  Who knows!  I just make sure I keep taking my synthroid and do my TSH and T4.  At least that I can control...

Mich101....I got inspired and at least I can move in my bsmt!  More work to do but at least I can have the furnace guy out without being so embarrassed!

Rita....funny thing...I live a whole 10 minutes from the Elgin boat and I have never been!  Hmmmm...a lunch bunch outing?????

Laura...I have tried everything and still no pic!

Jan...I have my annual px on Tuesday and then see the onc on 1/13 and boy do I understand the jittery feeling re: doc appts.  Just want to get past them as quickly as possible.  I have no symptoms of anything looming but then I felt just fine before all this started too!

Sounds like it will be much warmer today...now that the holidays are over, could we please have spring, like right now??????

Gosh...just heard that John Travolta's son died - wonder what that is all about.....you just never know what is around the corner.  Hugs!

Morning....yeah it's Saturday.  Had a rough day at work yesterday.  Must have been that long vacation in part.  Thought about getting on here, but just couldn't quite make it.  I put on my jammies and curled up in my recliner and watched some boring t.v.  Somewhere in there fell asleep so got up and went to bed and right back to sleep.  Now just hoping I didn't have too much.

I heard a breaking news story last night about John Travolta's son.  Very sad.  Apparently ( this was from a Larry King segment ) the son had some sort of medical problem from very early childhood which is thought may have contributed.  I think it is all speculation until they actually autopsy to pinpoint if possible.

Just points up again the fact that we don't know which day has our name on it so living as well as we can everyday ---- doing as much as we can to make our life and the life of those around us as good as we can is really ALL we CAN do.  I don't fret too much about dying since I'm not totally reluctant about it.  Not to say I want to hurry it up either, thank you, but it is one of the consequences to being alive in this world.  I at one time had a tremendous fear in regard to dying but now see it as the actual gateway to the spiritual life we all live.  Some where along my path in time ( this time now ) I realized deep within my consciousness that I have a persona now but am a very, very old soul and that is the life that continues always.  Until I was able to 'understand' who the REAL me was I had this trouble with dying because it represented loss --  even though it was my own personal loss.  Well, nuff' about that.  Most people can't relate and it's boring to them and just so much fluff which is ok.  It is just a good thing to be content with our days  ------  some we will barely notice, and others we will be outstanding -- but every moment you live and everything you do is perfect for you the author of it.  Just do what you do in love and peace and believe me all will be fine.

I have lots more work today here at home.  Thank gosh I don't have a basement.....though the storage would be a wondrous thing.  For the newer ladies.......I did not avail myself of help from anyone while my life was in such upheaval last year so I have about a years worth of regular cleaning and about two yrs. worth of spring type ( throw it out, yard sale it or whatever ) type of cleaning ( all mine will go to auction soon )  so I continue in an ongoing process which I knew would be time consuming as well as having to go back over lots of it.  I am identifying auction articles ( first sweep was no question items --- now a couple more sweeps to add more ) and each time I am able to do a deeper cleaning.  Won't be long and I should be washing walls.  I have been using special cleaners and polishes on my laminate wood floors lately to bring them back up to par.  It was a hard year and did result in things getting in quite a state but it is all coming together.

Anyway, I think this was maybe a pretty boring note so I'm going to go for now and check back in later.  I'm unable to DO anything which will bring me Laura's picture so guess I'll have to go without ---- sorry about all the marks in my quote.  It happens now and then.  I'm thinking of all of you today though I've not used names.  Just hear me saying hello and have an extra special fantastic day.

ok....lost the last post but Blackjack and I were posting at the same time.  I said I hoped if ya'll did a craft and potluck together that everyone contributed the recipe they used.  What fun that would be.

Also I am glad that you mentioned tests Michele.  I guess I will call my PA in Mt. Vernon on Monday.  All my results went to her, according to Radiologist from Carbondale for further evaluation and recommendations and I have not heard from her as yet.....so maybe I will call.  However, if she were very concerned I'm sure I would have heard from her immediately so I take that as a very, very good sign.  Well, usually I'm always positive until I have a reason not to be --- I just expect the best and hope I get it.

Hope you all have an outstanding day whatever you do -- even if it's just resting.

    Hi Girls....

Just called Carol (berry)... I was REALLY worried about her... she is doing okay. She's had a real hard time dealing with all the chemo and hair loss. She is very sad. I tried to cheer her up... I told her things will get better. She knows that's the case, but she is still very sad and misses her old life. We all know how that feels. So.... Carol needs some cheering up.... keep her in your thoughts and prayers. AND despite it all... she is being the true ILLINOIS GIRL... she plans on joining this month's lunch bunch...

CAROL - Hang in there dear... it will get betta!!

     ---------------------------------------

I have tried calling LittleC...if I connect with her... I will let you know.

Carol Berrypatch and Little C.....I have found something for you that I have read a lot in my lifetime because that is just the life I seem to have:

    DON'T QUIT

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,

When the road your're trudging seems all uphill,

When the funds are low, and the debts are high,

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit, rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with it's twists and turns,as everyone of us sometimes learns,

And many a failure turns about, when he might have won had he stuck it out,

Don't give up though the pace seems slow, you may succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out, the silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

And you never can tell how close you are, it may be near when it seems so far.

So stick to the fight when your're hardest hit, it's when things are worse, you must not quit.

    Edgar A Guest.

I know this may seem like so much hot air but I had this poem on a plaque hanging in my room  Took it down recently because the sun had faded it out so much.  I have had many challenges in my life so far and I'm sure more will be along.  Don't know if this will help either of you like it has me, but I present it just in case.

All of you are in my heart and every time I say a prayer your name is in it.  It's a new year and a new day and you are on your way to a new normal better life.  It's not an easy thing you are doing so all these ladies are here so you can lean on them and borrow their strength ( I've taken lots from that bank ) when yours is low and every breath is a struggle.  You are a worthwhile beautiful person with a challenge and we are here for you.

    Good afternoon!

Oh Michele101, It does sound like you're ready to "hit the boat!"  I wish I lived a little closer.  Maybe that might be a good plan for the March lunch bunch...perhaps early March.  I couldn't do it in the evenings because that would involve an overnight which ends up pretty cashy.  Something to consider!  (unless you'd like to make the April lunch bunch at the casino in Peoria???)

SUSIESWAN IS BACK!  Please welcome Susan back, gals.  Laura, JanClare, Kater, Wendy, and Michele101 probably remember her.  She's posted early on the thread and then moved away from the thread for awhile. I'd missed her and contacted her to see how she was doing, only to find out that she still reads the thread but hadn't been posting.  I'm so glad she dropped back on!

Susan (SusieSwan) could you please tell all the new gals a bit about yourself and how you're doing now?  There are a group of fantastic ladies on here and there's ALWAYS room for another one like you.

Hey, Jackie...thanks for the prayers.  I'm firmly convinced that they help!

    Off to pay some bills....YUCK!

    Catch you later!

Hi Everyone...My daughter (back on college break) and I went to see Valkyrie yesterday and it was a fabulous movie...pretty intense.  I didn't think I'd like it THAT well, but I really did.  Hubby and I saw Marley and Me on Christmas Day and I loved that one as well.

I'm married...have two beautiful daughters.  One attends IL Inst. Of Technology (physics major) in downtown Chicago...she's my brainiac and good at sports, she also plays volleyball for them.  My youngest daughter is in 8th grade and love gymnastics and volleyball.

I also have two fur babies that I couldn't live without...my 120 lb great pyr (avatar pic) and my 2 year old goldendoodle.

I am a commodity manager in the manufacturing sector (yikes for 2009).

For 2009, I put together an exercise room and bought a pedometer and am planning on 2009 being a year of getting healthier for me!  The exercise is easy...I really do enjoy workiing out...for me it's what I put in my mouth....

    Have a great night ladies,

Hi everyone!  I have a lot of posts to catch up on but wanted to let you know that I am back!  We had a great trip and none of us wanted to come back.  We were 3 hours delayed getting out that snowy day, but we were very glad our flight left and was not cancelled.  We had great weather - the coldest day was a high of 65 - the rest of the time it was around 80 degrees.

We came home to an emergency last night.  My father-in-law was picking us up from the airport and he had parked my car a block away from the airport while he waited for us to land (since they won't let you sit at the airport and he didn't feel like circling).  While we were waiting for our bags, he called and said he couldn't get my car started.  DH told him where the jumper cables were and was telling him to get someone to give him a jump.  He kept calling back saying he couldn't get the car started and asking if we had jumper cables.  It was getting really weird and so DH set out to walk over to where he was parked.  I got a call a few minutes later that his Dad was really out of it and couldn't remember talking to him, didn't know how he got there, etc.  DH got the car started, picked us up and we took his dad to the emergency room.  They did a battery of tests and he is still in ICU, but they think he will be released tomorrow.  They think it was a stroke, but the tests so far aren't really showing anything.  We went to visit him tonight and he was back to normal but he still remembers nothing about those 3-4 hours yesterday.  It was very odd and scary.  The whole ride home he kept saying "I'm all mixed up and confused."

I hope everyone is doing ok and that you all had a great Xmas and New Years!

Hi everyone.....Connie, so sorry to hear about your FIL.  Must have been scary for everyone.  Thank goodness you were being picked up.  I recall a family friend -- never missed a day of work in his life.  Left for work one morning -- never arrived and hours and hours later returned home.  He did not know where he had been or exactly how he got home, but he ( apparently since he had no one to take him to the hospital for tests or treatment ) was never able to return to work.  He had very little long term memory left and needed help for much of what he did after that.  I'm thankful that you were able to be with our FIL almost immediately and get help for him.  I'm sure it has made a huge difference in the prognosis....whatever it turns out to be.

SusieSwan....great to meet you and your lovely friend in the picture.  Diet and exercise is on my list as well.  I think it is a great de-stressor too isn't it....well, at least the working out part.

    Talk to ya'll tomorrow.

Ritajean - I live about 20 minutes from the Elgin boat, but I've only been there twice.  We actually had one of our office Christmas parties there in the "nice" restaurant they have.  As much as I enjoy gambling, I only do it on vacations, like cruising, or the Bahamas.  I do more of my gambling online at pogo.com where it's all fake money and doesn't hit my real life pocketbook!

conniehar - My father-in-law had a somewhat similar experience several years ago.  He walked into a room to do something then completely forgot where he was or why he was there.  My MIL noticed him acting confused and took him to the ER.  Eventually the did find that he had a brain tumor, and fortunately it was a meningioma which is benign.  He has surgery and has been perfectly fine ever since.  I'm glad you're FIL is getting the medical attention he needs.

SusieSwan - One of our good friends has a white Great Pyranees.  I LOVE that dog.  He's one of the sweetest and most lovable dogs I've known.

Carolberrypatch...I sent you an email.  Hang in there...and I promise I won't say "it'll grow back" once!  This whole experience is dreadful to say the least but it does end so try and focus on a day after chemo and plan to do something really nice...maybe a weekend away, or a fancy dinner somewhere, maybe a play...that way you can focus on that.  But I also realize that you can't see it from our perspective YET....after we are done....BUT YOU WILL!  And a year from now, you will be right here...helping another gal get thru this mess!

    Laura...thanks for the update.

Jackie...l loved your poem!  You always manage to say exactly the right thing, at the right time.  You are amazing!

My cold hangs on...and on and on and on!  Just annoying at this point tho.  I am sure I am annoying to my neighbors as well....they have their holiday lights still on and I have my valentines up!  They always kid me about this....they should talk.  Three of my neighbors still have their pumpkins on their porch....with Frosty....and it's Janurary!!!!!  HELLO!!!!!!!

Hope you all have a wonderful day!

A hearty laugh gives one a dry cleaning, while a good cry is a wet wash.

Good Sunday morning everyone.  I'm pretending there is a beautiful sun outside my window but that is not even close -- sigh !!!!  I wanted sun and all is damp and grey but it will get better.  We did lose our warmth --- but I don't dare complain.  Overall so far we have had a California winter here.

I'm all for taking down the X-mas by New Years at least.  I was amazed when we moved back home 11 years ago.  In California people don't leave decorations up very long and for the longest time I kept thinking---what is wrong with these people.  Seems here that people have some decoration at least half the year if not more.  Not the same one thankfully.  Still, I expect to see X-mas trees for quite some time yet and I'll "mention" it two or three times derisively as I usually do.  My new normal has a heck of a lot of the old in there too.

Nothing planned for today....probably the usual trip to Wal-Marts for animal food.  You can tell who has too many animals  ---  we are regulars in the pet food aisles and can be counted on to show up on a frequent and consistent basis.  We are also dead give-aways because the carts are so heavy and full.  Do any other shopping and it must be done first, as after the pet food binge negotiating the isles is a major feat causing many a sweat to burst forth at the near misses.

On that lovely note I am going to get some more coffee. Do you have some of that stubborn bronchitis Wendy?   Maybe a bit of allergy.....I think that can help it hang on sometimes.  Anyway, I'll be checking back later.

    Jackie

Blackjack- re: Riverboat lunch bunch-well, I would have to choose between eating lunch or the gambling :) Which should I choose, hummm....Smile Let us know how your DD b-day went.

    Good morning:

Another Susan!  Nice to meet you SusueSwan.

Connie, I am certain that was a very frightening thing for your family. Your Dh acted so quickly.  Does your  FIL remember the episode now?  He got himself there, thank goodness, and then it happened. I am glad he got himself there.

Well, back to reality tomorrow.  I have my lesson plans but my attitude is not the best.  I have a problem now in that I have been staying up very late and then sleeping very late and now I have to switch gears.

As I listen to everyone cleaning up, I have come to this twisted realization  that Jackie is smart in that she doesn't have a basement.  If we all didn't have a basement, we would have far less cleaning and straightening up.

That was nice you called Carol, Laura.  Wendy, your words are perfect.  I was going to go on about how now have more hair than I know what to do with, but she  is not there yet for that to be comforting.  It is all a process, isn't it, and only time and personal experience can get one through it.  I think this sort of cancer is very traumatizing because so many were ambushed by it....no symptoms and in most cases no family history. Like Michele, I cannot get excited about mammograms as I went through probably  five annual ones and the cancer never showed.  I get a funny feeling when they tell women to get that mammogram, like that is all you need to do to stay on top of it.  I suppose they help most women  Oh well, it is baffling.

     Okay, have a wonderful Sunday.

    Susan
