Illinois ladies facing bc

Good morning:
You ladies are so knowledgeable about Polish foods. I agree, Jackie, I do not like cabbage rolls. Maybe no one does, but it is traditional, so we will have a month worth of leftovers with them.
I remember what they told me about shopping and what to buy at a grocery story. Stay on the peripheral (dairy, produce, etc.) and skip the aisles (food in boxes and cans). I have always been one to wander off into forbidden places, however, so just because I remember what I was told, doesn't mean I practice it. I love cereal and that is in a box!
Yup, the Polish relatives are coming! Laura, I told Paul that you made your own pierogis (just copied and pasted that one) and he was so impressed! He has a favorite Polish grocery on Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago that he frequents (Wally's) and gets them there.
Take care and have a wonderful day!

Kater:
I have very definitely missed something here. I did not even realize that you are on a treatment, or am I wrong on this? I am sorry you are not feeling well.
The pets are so comforting, aren't they? When I was sick my cat was so loving. Please let me know us know if the fever is gone.

Kater, Do you have a copy of your bloodwork? I don't know of any alks in a CBC, and so not sure what you mean. Maybe your doctor could clear it up better than the nurse.
Susan....I have Polish relatives too, and I find the cooking a little bland for my taste. My aunt made pieroges for Christmas for many years, so you brought back family memories for me. She is 87 now, and not able to cook.
Laura, what a beautiful mailbox you have! Girl, you sure are talented!
I've just done a little catching up, and happy you all sound like you are enjoying the holidays. I am too, but with my kids here, I've not had much chance at the computer. Just cooking and cleanong, and partying for me. looking forwared to tonight, as it is the last big family gathering.
Blackjack, I think we will have to find a new place for mammos.....Evanston is planning on closing the unit at RNS! This is not going to be a happy transition for many, I'm afraid.
Hope to be there on the 14th, hugs to all. Pat
PS Karin, I hope your Illinois like weather is improving!

Sharon,
I'm thinking of you, and hope you are feeling well enough to enjoy this holiday season.
Hugs, Pat

Hi gals!
Whew! What a busy few days we have had! The little guys were so excited about the presents and it was so much fun watching them. They arrived right on time and had no bad weather except fog as they got closer to Illinois. Now they have gone to Macomb to another set of family and will be back tomorrow. We're going to Chuckee Cheese tomorrow night to celebrate the oldest's birthday. He'll be 5! Then they're going to stay a few days before heading back to Kentucky so we'll have plenty of time to play all the games! II'm really enjoying the time with them. My house looks like a cyclone hit it though with all the toys and presents piled on both sides of the living room. LOL
Kater...so sorry that you are sick. YUCK! I hope you feel better real soon. HUGS!
Mary Jane, did you survive Christmas? I don't know how you do it with that many people! I'm really looking forward to Saturday night!
I have to laugh about your discussion on Polish food. Dave is Polish....hey he eats ANYTHING...just like Mikey on that old cereal commercial! He even speaks some of the language. I really haven't encouraged him to make any of the Polish foods, though! Like some of you, I don't like the cabbage rolls either! LOL
Laura, your mailbox is lovely! Thanks for sharing the picture!
Sharon, I hope you are doing better and had a chance to enjoy Christmas!
Nancy, hop right on and meet the gals in your area for the January lunch if you're available.
Susan, you've hit the half-way mark now. From now until June, it's downhill all the way! This last half will go fast and before you know it, you'll be a free woman! LOL
Jackie...glad you had a pleasant holiday. You've come a long way from last year at this time!
Blackjack...glad you won at the boat. It's been a long time since we've been to the boat in Elgin. We usually go to Joliet or to Peoria. I do like the Elgin boat, though. Also glad you had a good time with your family and that you son got in on time for the festivities.
Thinking of all of you in treatment and hoping that it's being kind to you. Also thinking of all of you who haven't posted in awhile and hope to see you back soon.
Tonight is bowling night so I need to get into action and decide what I'm going to wear. Also need to get the pot of bean soup off the stove and cooled down.
Catch you all later.
Rita

Thanks for all the wonderful comments pertaining to our mailbox. I will help any of you girls dress up yours or even just a large empty pot. I just use different varieties of evergreens, berries, whatever I have laying around. Soon I will post my summer mailbox decor... perhaps it will help you all think that spring/summer is just around the corner!

Susan - Thanks... I love that Paul is impressed. It's a TON of work (about 3 hours to make 6 dozen)... but we have it "down pat"... dh makes the potatoe/farmers cheese/onion mixture, I make the dough and stuff and crimp each one and dh boils them all, drains them, cooks bacon and chops it up. Then he sprinkles the bacon over the cooked pierogis... when we're ready to eat them, he fries them up in a little oil... I like them with sour cream. Hey... who knows... maybe you two lovebirds would like our recipe! lol Just lemme know! Crazy sexy Polish cooking! lol
Sharon - I'm with Pat... how are you doing? Knowing you though, you made the most of them. Is it a good thing that you're not in Israel right now? Lots of bombings... maybe this all is a blessing in disguise. Check in with us.
smerf - Have fun at your family gathering!
---------------------------------------
dh is very ill w/the flu/bronchitis/who knows what else! I ran out to our FAV Chinese rest... and got him 2 qts of their very hot and spicy sweet and sour soup (we have a reason for this remedy... honest!). He ate/sipped it and was sweating like a pig because it was so spicy! OMG lol... he swears this is his very own ANCIENT CHINESE SECRET! lol HELP ME... lol Although I have to admit... he's not the typical ILL MALE... he has simply been sleeping downstairs in his cave (aka: finished basement)... I check on him regularly... make sure he's breathing... and go shopping. LOL LOL LOL just kidding... luv ya all!

Jan - I am so happy you "found" us... it's awesome that we can help you through this... I know you don't ''KNOW" us, but we all have 2 things in common... bc and ILLINOIS. Surround yourself with those who know your situation and you will excel. Hang in there... our "hearts" are with you. And remember these words: you will someday soon, be helping newbies here... just like us. That's the spirit of women...we know how to comfort each other.
Rita - We were posting at the same time. Awwwwwwwwwww... how cute - I just know how much you enjoy your little ones... ChuckE Cheese... yikes... kids everywhere... but so much fun! Oooooooh... bean soup... can you give more details?

Hi ladies. From what I've been reading, it sounds like everyone had a great Christmas and are still enjoying the holidays. My sons (ages 18 and 21) and I had a wonderful Christmas together, very quiet and happy.
I took my sons to Midway airport yesterday and got caught in the heavy rains and fog. It took me twice the amount of time than it normally does when I make this trip to the airport. They are going to spend a week with their father in Kansas City, MO, and return home January 3rd.
I just finished taking down my Christmas decorations. I love the decorations, but I'm also glad to have my home back to semi-normal.
Hope everyone has a wonderful evening. I am off work for the next few days, so I will be checking in later with everyone. Hugs...

Hi Nancy - feel free to join us at any get-together... if not... we're always here!

Evening ladies.....I'm just checking back in. And we are yummy talking food again. Love it. For those who like the cereal isle at the store --- my nutritionist friend says.....the Irish Steel Oats are what to eat.....seem expensive she says but makes four times as much so you freeze helpings and just re-heat whenever you eat oatmeal next. She eats them almost every day. She also eats only the whites of the egg --- but I have to draw the line there. It's the yolk that makes eggs have flavor. Eggbeaters even has some yolk in some of theirs. I eat the yolks and enjoy every bit of it. Half and egg is not better than none....I have to have my yolk. Also, most of the Kashi cold cereals are just fine Gloria says. Also, there is a cereal called Uncle Sam and it is great as well.
I willl buy canned food, but I read all the labels and this is every time I go to the store. Mainly I go to the frozen food case --- but keep a few cans too. You just have to watch how much salt or sugar etc.
There is also a 'diabetic' type sugar you can buy ---- it's called Whey-Low. It is supposed to be the thing if you have had reactions to other brands of sweeteners. I used it before Splenda came out.....they have it every which way- white, brown, powdered.
Unless my tummy acts up ( seldom )I use only brown rice. Food is fun but I just wish I would have enjoyed it more when my metabolism starting burning it up before I ever got any in my mouth. I know those days are long gone and I sure miss them. Speaking of food....dh is going to ber home soon so best see what lovely left-over I can drag forth to feast on. Talk to ya'll later.

I'm to late. but I like to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!I was to buzzy to sale my kittens before Christmas, doing my externship and finish my college in November.
I celebrate Catholic Christmas too, I made all food by my self for Christmas party: cabbage roles, 'Turkey, mashed potato, salads and tort Napoleon.
Russian Christmas will be January, 7

So who has exciting plans for New Year's Eve???? We're just going to one of my golfing buddy's house for a party. We always have fun but it's not nearly as lively as some of the New Year's Eve celebrations that we did in "the old days!" Maybe that is good! LOL
Hope everyone is doing well tonight! My recliner is beckoning!
I'll try to pop back on tomorrow before my family returns for a few days.

Morning! Sounds like it will be a warmish one today.
Sharon....yes...I agree! How are you? Check in please!
Laura....how's DH feeling? Lots of bronchitis in my family too...
Rita...sounds like you are having a ball! My plans for New Year's Eve are the same as they have been. Jammies by 8, Maybe watch the ball drop, if I stay downstairs. But usually I go up at 10 and am asleep by 10:15! I haven't been out for the big night for at least 15 years. There is a big party at my niece's but we are not going....too many crazy people on the roads. Gosh...I guess we are old and boring!
Blackjack...how did the closet work out?
Jan....yep...gotta hit the submit button and if you edit your post, don't forget to hit the save button! For posting pics you need to go to a photo site like Photobucket.com and upload your pics. Then you can hit the little picture icon at the top of where you type your post and insert your "copied" pic. I can PM you detailed instructions....it's really easy.
Have a great day everyone....my cold which I had 2 weeks ago has reared it's ugly head so I am off to shower and make a grocery run and then back to "couch"....so much for my plans for the next 2 days! Oh well....gotta keep the cold remedy people in business!

Hey Wendy...take care of that cold. This crazy weather doesn't help any. One day we're freezing our butts off and the next it's 50 degrees! Gads! Dave has been fighting a cold, too. Unfortunately he IS the typical sick male! He was so good to me when I was going through the chemo that I try to be very helpful and tolerant but it IS testing my patience, which never has been my best trait! LOL Anyway, I hope your hubby is better, Laura!
How are you doing, Kater? Feeling any better?
Irina, it's good to hear from you again! It sounds like you've been cooking up a storm at your house!

Morning Girls,
What a nice sunny day it is right now..hope the sun stays for a while.
Wendy..a cold and jammies..girl you need the homemade chicken soup and lots of Vit.C. I like to watch old movies on New Year's if I am home. This year we are going to a casino night New Years' party with freinds. Pretty fancy I am told but should be fun.. I love a good party. lol
Jan.. glad you found us.I agree with Laura with all have something in common..but you will get lots of support and hugs when you need them. Hope to see you at the lunch bunch in Jan.
Laura.. is your dh feeling better. He needs chicken soup too.
Rita..glad to see that you got to spend time the grand kids. That is what xmas is all about the kids and their smiling faces. Enjoy your New Years party...
Jackie..I agree with you about reading the food labels.. We just have to read and make good choices on what we eat and drink. Moderation is the key.
Sharon...Happy holidays and how are you feeling. Please let us know how you are.
Smerf...I am worried about the mamo dept. Keep me posted. I am glad to hear that you are having fun with the kids. I know you will need a vacation after they leave. I know I do. lol
Well I gotta get going.. the closet guy is coming today.. he never showed on Sat. States he forgot. I think he was partying to much lol. Well have a great day everyone. Hugs to those in tx. To everyone else remember to be healthy..be happy in 2009.

Let's try this again! I was typing away and all of a sudden the font was enlarged gigantically on my last post. I have no clue what I did and saw no way to reduce it to normal again.
To continue......
Laura, the bean soup that I made is just a "soupier version" of ham and beans. I took the bone from the "bone-in" ham that I cooked for Christmas dinner and added great northern beans, onions, and pepper. It was sure good! Too bad you're not closer. There's still plenty left over.
With the end of the year approaching, I've been looking back through many of the old posts on this thread. Do you gals realize that without intending it, this thread has become a journal of sorts for all of us? We have probably shared our journey better here than we would have if we'd written several pages each day. There is no comparison to how revealing it is compared to the factual journal that I kept.
Wendy the Younger........hope you are feeling better today. That darn Herceptin! Hang in there!
Well, I need to get busy. My family will be back early this afternoon and Grandma needs to get a few more things picked up, get some groceries, and find the perfect birthday cake for a 5-year old!
Enjoy the warmer weather today, gals and hugs to all of you!

See the bright yellow sun out. Love it...as we continue with our fairly un-traditional weather. Hope you are all getting ready for a good day --- even if a lot of it will be spent on the couch like Wendy. Hope you will be feeling much better soon.
We will be party poopers this year too. Dh has the night off but has to be to work by 8:30 on Thurs. morning. I don't try to stay up late anymore -- I figure slightly younger people ( if you don't have a couple of good friends willing to stay up with you ) are better at seeing the New Year come in and better able to handle the aftermath than I ever was as well. Just hope whatever anyone does they stay safe and sound.
Dh has the day off and I will help him with a project or two while working around here. There is always something to do here but now and then I just throw up my hands and leave it and go have some fun---I'm sure it keeps me young.
I'll be checking back in later. Nice to see you Irina and I see you do the Golumpkies too. One of these days maybe I'll try them again. I like cooked/steamed cabbage....and I didn't mind the meat filling ---- I think it was the tomato juice dressing that for some reason just didn't seem like it paired up correctly with everything else. See ya'll later.

Wendrew - Thanks for posting the gorgeous photo of Jackie's love nest! dh just left for work...ya can't keep a good man down! lol Although he is still hacking up a storm!
Jackie - You'll be sitting out there before you know it! Sooooooooooo pretty!
Rita - Sounds similar to the US Senate Bean Soup recipe my dh makes... but he adds mashed potatoes to it. Yum... I'm going to ask him to make it this weekend.
kater - Did you see my post to you about Dr. Trauscht? Just don't want you to miss it, if you're interesed.
------------------------------------------
Here's a quick, easy, cheesy, somewhat healthy lunch idea... it's one of my favorites:
2 cups cooked white rice
1 cup black beans (I like the organic ones in a can, but any will do)
Shredded Cheddar Cheese
I layer the rice, then the beans, then the cheese in a shallow bowl.
Microwave til hot
Top with a mixture of chilled tomatoe and cilantro (I usually buy it already prepared at Jewel in the deli section, it's thier salsa)
It's very filling and the beans are high in protein.
-----------------------------------------------
Have to take the cat to the vet... Yum! he ate a Chipmunk and got worms... so gross!

Good morning ladies. It is so nice to see the sun! I am enjoying being off work...I slept in until 630am, which is late for me.
I started taking arimidex yesterday. I was on tamoxifen for over 2 years, but my onc said that I am now in menopause (I just turned 50 in October). I hope I handle the arimidex well. I've read that the side effects start showing up around 2 to 3 weeks after starting. We'll see what happens. So far, I don't notice any difference.
Rita, the bean soup you made sounds delicious. I may have to make some myself. At this time, I really don't have any plans for New Year's Eve. I have to work New Year's Day, so I probably will take it easy. Sounds like you're going to have a fun New Year's Eve.
Laura, your recipe with the rice, beans, and cheese sounds great. I will have to try it. When and where is the next meet up? Let me know.
Hope all of you ladies have a great day. I will check back in later. Hugs...

Hi everyone.
quick post-- back at work and have much to do in a day- as I'm off for the remainder of the week. Christmas was a blur and my family room truly looks like Toys R Us threw up in there. And heh-- that was the start of Christmas dinner. We had a Christmas lunch at DH's sister's in Wheeling and left there at 4:30 to travel to Deerfield for Xmas dinner at my brother's in Deerfield. My 4 yr old daughter fell asleep in the car and about 50 ft from my brother's driveway, woke suddenly, coughed, and vomited (!!) all over herself, her Christmas dress, the car seat.... She's in hysterics. My 6 yr old son is screaming "there's throwup on me, there's throwup on me....!" I pull over, fly to the back of the car searching for a towel, anything. DH was following as he had to take his dad home first-- and comes to the rescue with his car towel. We basically limp to my brother's house and before I can say anything, Tim goes running in and announces to everyone "GUESS WHAT!!! ...." Fortunately, I had pjs packed for the trip home, so we got Beth into the bathroom, peeled off her clothes, cleaned her hair and face and threw everything and the car seat cover into the washing machine. Beth spent Xmas night in her pjs and was more comfortable for it! Half hour later she was running around with her cousin and snagging cheese from the snack table. I'm guessing it was just too much Xmas. I had definitely had too much Xmas at that point. And yes, I did have an extra glass of wine that night.....
I'm back in surgery tomorrow. Final cleanup (oh, it had better be, please) on the reconstruction. Loosening of scar tissue on the reconstructed side, maybe one size larger implant and then a revision to lift on the good side. I should be home that night. PS tells me no drains.
Am waaay behind on all the posts, but hope everyone is doing okay. I'll check in after tomorrow.

Julie/Chicago.....oh my---you really had a time of it X-mas day. I am so thrilled my kids were raised years and years ago. Love them dearly --- any babies or kids, but all the things you talk about are for the young set---as exasperating as it is for you too.....somehow tomorrow -- or heck even shortly after an incident.....the energy level was back and and very hopeful feelings of fairly easily moving on. I'm at the age where you can start to struggle over ANY incident....even the small ones.
Will be sending good vibes that your surgery goes really well and you will be done once and for ALL.
Bean and bean soup recipes all sound yummy. My ham bone is in the freezer and I will use it to make the New Years Day bean soup. A little buttermilk cornbread on the side. Often I put a little butter and dab of honey on the cornbread before I nibble it down.
Nancy....you probably noticed the earlier posts. I take Arimidex as does Wendy and I don't think either of us has much of a noticeable effect. On rare occasion I get a little ache here or there....what I notice more is after sleeping or being off my feet for some time I might clomp around for a very short time .......small price in my estimation for the benefit of increasing my chance to NOT have recurrence
Hmmm --- I went back and looked at my home in the woods......sure wasn't what it looked like last summer. I never found the time, energy or ability to get out the deck set of table and chairs, and all my yard ornaments so it was bare and somewhat un-inviting.......every week-end at home I was busy doing laundry and cleaning what I could.....no time to go outside and enjoy.
So.....I am VERY anxious to have summer on the deck with the table and eating out there all the time. For some of you newer ladies.....I had to stay in a motel for 7 weeks ( home on the week-ends ) so feel like missed summer last year....specially since we did not do our usual stint of living on the deck........you walk out my kitchen door right onto the deck and we have shade most of the day so eat all our meals, and have all our coffee breaks there. Last summer didn't happen for me so I am so READY .See ya later.

Julieb: I know the experience in the car was dreadful for you, but it sounded like something from a funny family comedy to me! If awards were going out for stamina, you and your husband would each deserve your own. I am thinking about you today and I am certain this will be the final surgery for you! Good grief!Kater, now I get the treatment you are on. You have the osteoporosis. I have to do that bone density thing and your post reminded me to make that appointment. I sure hope you are feeling better.
Our Polish feast was a huge success. My husband is a lawyer by trade and a cook by avocation and he did a great job with the help of Wally, the Polish grocer. I was so happy for him as his family was so proud of him! I only cleaned and cheered him on.
I am so excited to put all this Merry Christmas crap away! I grew up where I live now, amidst mostly Jewish people and they have a great name for all the clutter...chachkas....which means dodads or dust collectors. So all the chachkas are going back into the basement until next year.
Rita, it hit me that I have five months left of my career. I have no regrets and I do look forward to having time. My family, I think, is worried I will have too much time. I am not worried, however, and wonder why they are. I guess maybe they are just readying for a new role for me and so wonder about the new mom/wife.
Have a fun day!
Susan

Good afternoon everyone - the sun is out, yahooo!!
It's been such a pleasure to not see snow (well, at least I feel that way, haha). And Buster has been pooping happily all over the grass again.
Julieb - sent you a PM.
Wendy - I hope you kick that darn cold's butt. Sorry you are sick.
Susan - I have always loved the word chachkas!!
Hi to everybody else!! I'm off to walk Buster again.... and then start cleaning up some of the xmas mess (and just plain old mess!) before DH gets home. And I'm going to fill out an online application for the school district; my SIL told me they often have temp office work - any bit helps!
Hugs & cheers to all..... Juliet

Julie dear! - OMG - ... you are a real trooper! WOW... what a mess, but you always seem to come out smiling. Best luck w/surgery - you have been through so much.... I am cheering you on girl! Hope you have a speedy recovery. Best wishes to you!
Nancy101 - I hope Arimidex is easy on you... thank goodness you have the type of bc that there's something for it - long term. Our next get-together is on January 14th at Maggianos in Schaumburg at 11:30... hope you can join us and introduce yourself. Hang in there...
P-Juliet - What is your career/experience?

Just a quick drop in to say hi to everyone. We had a nice Christmas too. My sister lives practically across the street, so we didn't have far to travel .
Had a mammo. on the 'good' side on the 24th, and everything looks 'normal', which for me doesn't mean too much since my cancer was not picked up on a mammogram. I have my onc followup appt in January and you ladies have me thinking, and writing things down to ask him : on tamoxifen for how long? bone density test? blood workup? menopause? Thanks for the questions!
We normally stay in for New Year's Eve also. Cook a nice dinner, and hopefully stay up long enough to watch the ball drop Casino night sounds like fun!!!!!!
Where is Carol berrypatch and LittleC? Let us know how you are doing.
0 -
Morning! Glad we are going to miss all that snow up north!
Julieb....good luck today! And I hope the "surgery be gone" fairy sprinkles you with her magic dust! I am sorry for your daughter, but I was kinda laughing to myself! Ah....kids.
WendyTY....it sounds like you haven't been feeling well. I had NO problems with Herceptin...what se's are you having? When's your last infusion?
Laura...how's DH? Don't know about the soup for my cold tho...I made beef veggie soup last night and that was so good...I was actually in bed, asleep before 8pm and I didn't wake up until 6:45 which is unheard of for me. So...sleep is good!
Nancy101....I do have some muscle/joint pain from the arimidex but I take 500mg of magnesium every day which helps eliminate almost 90-95%. Onc now suggests it to his AI pts to take along with the calcium/D3. Just a thought for you...
Susan....your feast sounds so good. And I love the "Christmas crap" comment. Exactly the way I feel.
Kater...how are you feeling? How's your Mom and her PET scan?
I did join facebook but I am so lost! So I took a chance and went of amazon.com and YES! "Facebook for Dummies"! I hope to be getting the hang of that soon.
Gotta run and do a few things around here...never did anything yesterday but lay on the couch. I hope you all have a wonderful day!

GoodMorning everyone.....we have that beautiful sun back. Not a whole lot on my schedule for today....going to take apart my bed room and put it back-- been thinking about re-arranging the furniture...hmmmm. Either lots of work or none...
I'll be checking back in with everyone later. See ya then.

Hi there!
It's nap time so I'm stealing a few minutes on line! We've been to play "glow golf" in the Mall and the little guys were beat! Then we hit Wal-Mart to pick up a few half-price bargains. My only problem will be remembering where I put them when I need them next year! LOL
Jackie, I wish I had your energy. There are so many things I need to tackle around here and instead of buckling down and doing them I choose to read a book or surf the net and bc.org. I think my priorities are in the wrong place.
Wendy, I hope your cold is better. Soup and sleep work wonders.
It sounds like all of you have had a good Christmas. Michele did ask a good question. Where are you Little C and berrypatch? We need to hear from you! And Kater...I hope you are doing better yourself.
I'm glad that your mammo was clear, Michele, but I understand how you still might feel a big apprehensive if the mammo didn't catch the first one. I sometimes wonder if we'll ever get over that "doubt" that creeps up on us. You're wise to take a list of qustions in with you when you go to the onc. I didn't do that last time and I forgot a few things I wanted to ask about.
Yet Juliet! Warmer weather! Wonder how long it will last????
JulieB...thinking of you today and hoping that this is the last of the last for you! Sorry you had a little "extra" added to your Christmas this year. Write this down so you don't forget it in years to come. I'm trying to capture all those funny or unusual moments for my grandsons in memory books that I'm writing for them.
Well, I need to check my email before everyone gets up so I'd better moving. Enjoy this warmer weather.
Rita
