GMA - Normal?  What in the heck is that?  I know several who have had sleep issues while on Tamoxifen.  Hopefully your MO will prescribe something for sleep.  As far as being the "unique one"?  I thought that was just me.  It never seemed to fail that if it could go wrong, then it did.  Hang in there.  (((HUGS)))

GMA - I have had sleep issues for the first time in my adult life since starting tamoxifen 2 1/2 yrs ago.  I use melatonin, an over the counter sleep aid.  1 1/2 to 3 mg.usually dose the trick.  Melatonin is the chemical our own bodies produce to promote sleep.

I had mine with a fruit smoothie this morning. I know I'm being silly since I only took it six hours ago, and that many have said it takes a while for the meds to build up for SEs to show up, but I'm like waiting for the other shoe to drop today. :p. So far still feeling like me, plus some awful allergies due to the spring!

GMA-- hopefully someone can give you good answers on getting your body some sleep! :(.

GMA - I had sleep issues before the Tamoxifen, so I just go to that same doctor and he changes my meds up some.  I also add in some Melatonin every now and then.

Sometimes SEs don't show up for months and most of the time your body adjusts to them and they're not very bothersome at all.  Some lucky ladies never have any noticeable SEs.  For me, every now and then I'll have a leg or foot cramp and hot flashes about 2 or 3 times per day (usually at night when I'm home and can take off my shirt and turn on the fan when it's 30 degrees outside, lol).  I hope all the newbies here find the SEs aren't a problem!

Good to know Heartnsoul.. like Cuetang, I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop waiting for any SE's.  I didn't know about it building up before SE's kicked in.. I knew this had to be too easy lol :)

I called the manufacturer of Mylan btand Tamoxifen today, and they told me it was tempoarily discontinued.  I think if many of us send a request through their company email that we would like to see the product continued, maybe it would help.

    Here is the email link:

The yo yo goes on - My onc talked to my sleep doc and THEY decided I could take my Nuvigil (a STIMULANT) and tamoxifen even though it lessons the tamoxifen - Problem with that is I don't need any more stimulation - I need sleep!!! What were they thinking... I have a call back to each one of them and tried to explain that since the Tamoxifen I need sleep - I have no trouble staying awake!  Will probably hear back tomorrow from each of them tomorrow. - BTW these doctors are great at what they do but don't know what the other is doing half the time - I'm glad they talked to each other...

Idesim - yes, you don't want to be waiting for something that may not happen or might take months!  My hot flashes didn't show up for about 6 months - everyone reacts so differently.  I hope that other shoe never drops!

Sharon - thanks for the email address for Mylan.  That has been the one I've been taking for over 2 years now.  My pharmacist has had a hard time getting it all along, but he always managed - until this month.  I will definitely write them!

I have been on the Mylan brand the entire time (a year and a half) and am scared of the side effects change if I change brands. Will definitely write them.

Does Mylar appear to be the best brand? Mine are Teva brand.

My MO said something a little different about the timeframe of when SEs appear. She said they would show up within the first six weeks. I'm sticking with her theory because it has been a month now, and so far, so good! ;-)

That said, some more severe menopause symptoms might show up later and not necessarily because of the tamoxifen. My MO explained that since premenopausal women take it often at the point where they're approaching menopause, the symptoms coincide with the timing. She said the tamoxifen won't put me into menopause but can create symptoms associated with it (eg hot flashes, vaginal dryness). She said menopause will still happen as naturally directed by my body and not entirely brought on by tamoxifen. Hope that makes sense.

I switched to Teva from Mylan 6 months ago (couldn't get) and have really noticed no change.

My sleep continues to be terrible.  My MO said that he feels it is not from T, but rather the hormonal imbalances that go with it (much like women going through menopause).  Since I was pre-meno, the changes are probably greater and faster than someone who is older or going through meno naturally.  All great but doesn't really solve the sleep problem.  Have discussed going off Tami with him, all he will tell me is why it helps some women.  Need to decide myself .. told me to talk to my PCP about sleep issues.  My PCP not crazy about long term every night sleeping pill use ... so still trying to work on it.  Exploring all my options before stoping T.  Hoping maybe my body will adjust at some point.

For the newbies, most of my SEs have gone away themsleves or have been treatable.

GMA - To find out which brand you have, look on your bottle.  It should say on there somewhere or you could ask your pharmacist.  I have been on the Teva brand and actually, my hot flashes went away and the only issues I really have is sleep.  I have permanent nerve damage from rads so I am on an antidepressant for that.

Just a note for those with sleep issues.  You may want to talk to your doctor about the antidepressant amitriptyline (Elavil).  This medication has a sedative in it so it is taken before bedtime.  It can be taken in doses as small as 25mg and can be safely taken for long periods of time.  Like Tamoxifen, it has been around for a very long time.  Just passing information.......

Jo,  Elavil knocks me flat for 48 hours on a half pill lowest dose... It also gives me sleep induced apnea  - can't take that - Sleep Doc tried to put me on Cymbalta and it made me VERY agitated and mean.. to the point my dog left the room and my DH left the house.  I just have so much trouble with drugs Cry .. My bottle of tamox doesn't say what brand but it has WPI on the tablet. Oh well, it is what it is and I will get through this.

Ali68 that is what I have been saying for a year without even trying this pill.. I finally, last week with my other older sister got IDC with Hers2+ ER/PR+, decided it was time to at least try - because I don't want to have to add chemo to my future list.  This is my last ditch effort to keep it away. I now have 2 aunts, and 2 sisters that have the same type (IDC) I had.

I had six rounds of chemo and got complete response. Also djd rads which was the worst kind. So i've been on Tamoxifen 9 months and i think i've done enough.

Yes, Ali,  I'm sure you have - I didn't have chemo - they told me it wouldn't do any good for me. So I was just burned to a crisp with Radiation instead...

Ok I just call Mylan and was told they are dicontinuing the production of Tamoxifen and have no current date on when/or if they will produce again.  UGH!!!!!!!!!  I did tell the lady how I felt as this is my brand and I have tried the Watson Brand and had totally different se from it.  She just took my name and number to pass along.

I took Ambien throughout my diagnosis and radiation process but my oncologist didn't want me to take it.  He suggested melantonin but it makes me wired vs. sleepy.  I started taking 50 mg of 5 HTP which my oncologist approved and I sleep like a baby now.  After not sleeping for more than a year, it was a welcome relief.  It is a herbal supplement.  Doesn't interfere with tamoxifen.

Anyone have a good allergy med that they would recommend? I know Benadryl and Zyrtec are out if you're taking tamoxifen. These spring allergies are driving me nutty...

Cuetang-my oncologist actually told me I could take Zyrtec. I also checked on drugs.com it shows no interaction, but you might want to check with your oncologist.

Okay, so I've been on tamoxifen for about a year.  I must be super sensitive to drugs.  After having normal cholesterol and triglycerides last year, this year after taking tamoxifen, my cholesterol and triglycerides are up.  My doc told me to take niacin and when I researched further at home, I found out about the CoRN combo of coq10, riboflavin and niacin to counteract the effects of tamox on lipid profile.  I also read another article about other antioxidants positive effect (namely Vit C and E).

I'm taking them now at the dosages recommended in the studies, but wondered if any of y'all had experience with this combo working?
