Thanks Runfree16 and Gemini4. As for fertility, tamoxifen is used as a fertility treatment. It lowers your estrogen so the LH and FSH surge and wen you stop it your estrogen is stimulated. I actually used Femara as a fertility treatment for my other 2. I did not know there were other generics. I will try this. Not sure what is available in Canada. I don't really want to take it but I would kick myself later if I ever had a recurrence.

Ladies - thank you so much for sharing. Your posts may help hundreds of newbies when they read over the threads.

It's sharing info like this that makes the site so powerful (that and the support and venting).

    Thanks again.

    Ladies

there are over 300 drugs that interact with tamoxifen in someway either majorly, intermediate or minor

The other thing to bear in mind if T is taken with a liver enzyme inhibitor is that since the T is unable to be broken down to its active metabolite it will be LESS effective and the result will be more reoccurance or less disease free survival. It is not just a matter of increased or decreased side effects

The interacts are easy to google too

Holy Crap! I just Googled the list - I am speechless. I guess 2 headache tablets now and then won't render T useless - but it would be nice of doctors to point these things out!

I am not sure how to post a link but it is at www.drugs.com/drug-interactions. I guess the most important ones are SSRI antidepressants

Different MOs seem to have varying levels of concern about interactions with Tamoxifen. My MO is pretty mellow about all those interactions. She only feels strongly about avoiding certain anti-depressants and St. John's wort. She says Benadryl is a yellow light, and she is not concerned about the others. I don't know how she would feel about a daily turmeric supplement as opposed to occasional use in cooking.

no St John's Wort either? I think that might be in a blend I was thinking of taking... I hate having to check everything!

    Hi,

Is there a certain brand of multi vitamin that is ok to take with Tamoxifen? I see both the ones I have here have Vitamin E in them 100 percent of the daily limit.

It was interesting to be reading posts and see that people were having problems with impingment and joint pain in the arm/shoulder. I cant do much with my right arm for about two months and even started physical therapy which has been useless. I was talking to my stepmom who had breast cancer and golfs with a couple other ladies who had bc and its very common apparently. I'm still in pain though

melody46- I know what you mean about the bone and joint pain. My shoulder was so bad I was starting to lose range of motion, went to an orthopedic dr and got a cortisone shot in shoulder. I can move it again!!!!!! Still have the bone and joint pain but I can move my arm. Said it was inflammation from the tamoxifen, I have been taking 4 pills of osteo bi flex everyday along with my potassium pill and my Alive multivitamin. My shoulder really got messed up when the pharmacy switch my tamoxifen from Mylan to Watson. Now that I can no longer get Mylan I've been taking Teva, and so far no major changes like with the Watson.

Ndgrrl, the pharmacist told me that a multi that contained just 100% of the rda was ok, but not a megadose.

Thanks SophiaMarie, that's good to hear. I'm due to see my MO again in December, and I'll ask her for her take on this question of multivitamins. Sorry for the bummer about St. John's wort. But you should ask your doctor.

I just ordered the book "Tamoxifen and Breast Cancer" from Amazon. It takes six weeks to get it, but I figure if I have to take this drug for awhile I want to know more about it.

I am frustrated with all the different opinions from MO's about what is OK and what isn't. And, honestly, after 5 months on this drug, I don't like some of the side effects and would like to know if there is something I can do to control them better.

    Is anyone taking Raloxifene?

It seems to have the benefits of Tamoxifen without the bad side effects but doesn't seem to be prescribed much.

I am curious about it. What's the story?

    Hi everyone,

I am been on Tamoxifen since July. Some of you mentioned that you are taking multivitamins without copper, iron, and boron. I have read that it is good to have folate in the multivitamin instead of folic acid. My questions to anyone who can help me is:

    What multivitamin are you taking?

I asked this simple question in a separate forum I created last month and no one answered. Also, are you taking a separate supplement for B vitamins? The name of the vitamin and the dosage will be very helpful to me.

I also want to mention that I am taking curcumin, green tea extract and eating garlic. I think someone mentioned that their doctor told them not to eat these if on Tamoxifen. I guess we will never know the truth!

The title of my question is " Multivitamin Recommendations " which no one answered. I bumped it in the alternative medicine forum if someone wants to respond or you can respond here. Thank you.

New2bc, the hospital pharmacist told me not to take those things in supplement form - meaning concentrated - but eating them in food or as tea was not enough to make a huge difference.

I agree that it is frustrating to have so many different opinions on these things - but the same confusion is found out in the research world. I've found a lot of conflict on some of these things. My dietician agreed and added that sometimes it's influenced by who does the study - there could be a spin on some of it that we wouldn't realize. I guess it comes down to our own personal decision - we have to do what we feel comfortable with.

    Hi all!

I just picked up my prescription today. I've been staring at the bottle for a while. I know I will start taking it within the next week, but as I am just at 3 weeks out from my bmx, I am not ready to start another form of pain yet :)

I started reading this post from page one last night, and I see that some women here had their cancer metastasize to other areas even with the tam. cancer is a real jerk.

Like everyone else, I am having a terrible time finding real info on what you should and should not consume with tam. Being a vegetarian, and eating soy regularly for decades, I am not sure what I will do for a "meat" substitute now. It helped control my PCOS and psoriasis for so long and it is a real bummer that I can't have it any more.

I feel like all of the manufactures of these drugs should be required to keep and provide an updated list for those having to take it. Seems criminal that they don't.

    Anyhow -

Hope everyone has a good week!

JWoo. there's a lot of contraversy about Soy with Estrogen positive cancer. I'm Vegan and have chosen to limit my soy...but not eliminate it altogether. Plant based soy may improve the odds against reoccurence. I get my protein from green leafy veggies, quinoa, nuts, and soy such as edamame and tofu .....switched soy milk with Almond/coconut blend and avoid any overly processed soy products.

new2bc-I take and multivitamin called Alive for woman (not the one for woman over 50) and my oncologist approved. He did state not to take multivitamins that are for woman over 50, he said they are more to have synthetic hormones and I can't have that.

JWoo, I'm vegetarian too and still eat soy - my MO had no problem with it at all. He said no concentrated supplements, but what we eat as tofu or soy lecithin in other products shouldn't cause a problem. The way I see it, it's a "big picture" thing - without that form of protein, I'd be worse off physically so, on balance, I chose to continue eating it.

mstrouble - I have been on Tamox for almost 3 years and have been taking a multivitamin for women over 50 for 8 years. What exactly is the problem with these multivitamins? My MO never mentioned anything and he knows I am taking them. I would be curious to know.

Thank you for the input chachamom and lahela!

That video makes things even more confusing. I have heard that the way the FDA requires soy to be processed here in the US is part of the issue with it contributing to cancers.

It is all so confusing and the tamoxifen makes it even more so. :/

I guess I will just really cut back on the soy, and get most of my proteins elsewhere, and just have it when I go out to eat. But I will miss my SilkNog! :)

Wow! I'm not sure we will get any definitive answers about the soy issue nor the vitamin one. Maybe someone can develop an algorithm from all the offerrings to settle on a final answer! LOL

In recent posts, I've noticed several people describing their shoulder pain. I have also experienced shoulder pain on the right side (rads side), and sadly it has not responded in any significant way to several months of PT nor my ongoing strengthening and stretching exercises. I am curious as to how many of you with shoulder pain also have it on the rads side. I can't help but wonder if there is a connection between the rads, and tamoxifen use, and the intractabiliy of this joint pain. I don't see my MO until December and will ask her then, but wonder if anyone else has ideas/knowledge about this. I have to admit, I hated feeling like I "failed" PT after working so hard on helping this damn joint! :/ Thanks!

Lacey - you didn't fail PT, PT failed you! Shoulder problems are incredibly common in the general population so it's not surprising that a lot of us here have had problems. It can be difficult to tell if your problem is a direct result of surgery, rads, tamoxifen, or if it would've happened anyway. The shoulder is a very complex joint after all. For those who've had success with cortisone shots, how long does the relief usually last? I had a shot a while ago and I'm really enjoying being pain free there.

Thanks lekker. I know you are right about the high incidence of shoulder problems in the general population. I've recently observed two of my younger neighbors have rotator cuff surgery, and I am really hoping to avoid that. My orthopod was not eager to give me a cortisone shot there yet, so I've been relying on the PT for now. My PT therapist is thinking that it might be time to revisit that option. I would also be interested to learn for how long those shots are effective....if there is any consensus on that. A part of me feels like I can just tough this pain out since it is not aching badly all the time and my strength and range of motion are not grossly impacted.

On a more positive note, I am loving the improved sleep I am getting since starting the controlled release melatonin. Not perfect, but much improved, and the great result is that I am not exhausted all the time. Yay! I hope others who are trying this are enjoying a similar experience.
