    Hi all-

While looking for info on phytoestrogens I found this :

    http://www.paleoforwomen.com/flax-marijuana-and-44-other-phytoestrogen-sources-you-might-not-know-youre-consuming/

Not sure how accurate all the info is- but it is quite a list.

I also realized that most chocolate has soy in it. DEVASTATION!

But then I found some good blogs and such with lists of brands that don't use it. For all you out there with a sweet tooth as big as mine:

The other thing to consider is how much the T reduces for chance of BC reoccurance (maybe 15% protection ) since you already had it once. versus the risk of an unrelated cancer you might never get :).

Easy choice to my way of thinking

I would go a 20% reduction on reality versus 1% risk of possibility

MimiATL--My MO said not to expect side effects for 2-4 weeks, most likely 3. Some do feel them sooner (and those early ones may go away), but she said that's her observation. That calmed me down a lot when I started.

You're quite welcome lahela! I like those lower numbers.

I've noticed that a number of women post here with concerns about starting tamoxifen and the rare but disclosed health risks associated with the drug (such as uterine cancer and blood clots). Before anyone starts the drug, a meeting with a MO is in order to review health history and determine how those risks relate to the individual patient. In my case, my MO determined that I was not in a high-risk category for clots, and she said that the fact that I'm still menstruating reduces my risk of uterine cancer. In addition, I'll have yearly pelvic ultrasounds to monitor activity, and she has made me aware of what to watch out for (eg, breakthrough bleeding, spotting). I guess my point is, no one should have the burden of deciding if this is a dangerous drug on their own -- a good MO should address these concerns. I have seen women post who have indicated that their MO has advised against tamoxifen due to their individual risk factors.

Great post, Gemini! I completely agree - and had pretty much the same experience and information from my MO.

    Hello ladies,

It's been a while since I've been on the boards and I feel kind of bad because I'm here to ask a few questions.  I've been on tamoxifen for about a year.  I had my trans vag u.s. and had thickening of the wall and will be getting a biopsy soon.  I had spotting after 3-4 months and almost daily.  My MO took me off until we get this all figured out, but since I stopped the tamox, my spotting has gone away?  Normal, or not?  Bigger concern or not?  Any ideas or suggestions?

hi, I also have a few tamoxifen questions. I just started taking it. I have been having stomach cramping/issues, upset stomach, chemical smelling stools, loose stools. My dr says these are not side effects of Tamoxifen. Just wanted to run it by the experts...has anyone else had stomach issues while taking Tamoxifen? Do you think it's just bc I just started taking it and my body will adjust to it. Ty!

I've had constipation, which I'm pretty sure is due to the Tamoxifen because it began when I started taking it.  Have some other stomach issues (e.g. hiccups), but for me I think those are residual Adriamycin effects (gradually improving, but still there, even 6 months on).

My MO didn't say anything about digestive tract problems like that with Tamoxifen, but he did warn me to take it with food - he was right, if I don't have it right after eating, I get terrible heartburn. Do you take it in the morning or evening? There are women here who've said switching the time of day made a difference for upset stomachs.

I stopped taking tamoxifen at the end of September and my constipation lessened quite a lot (I take other meds that also make me constipated). I still get nausea - was hoping that would end but it hasn't. I have no joint pain now - that was the tamoxifen making me ache I'm sure. I took tammi at night and that helped with the flushes and upset tummy as long as I slept on a high pillow.

    Hi all,

Has anyone experienced severe hip joint pain after going off tamoxifen. I took it for a month, and now am off it in prep for surgery next week. Today my hips are really sore. The only other thing I can think of is that I took an imovane (same as ambien I think) first time ever last night because i haven't been able to sleep, but I can't find joint pain listed as an se of imovane.

    Thanks. Ridley

Ridley, I haven't heard of that, but I've been told that most SEs of Tamoxifen take a while to ramp up and then a while to subside after not taking it. If you hadn't suspended taking it, in other words, you might be getting this joint pain anyway, and by this theory, the joint pain might ease if you're off the med for another couple of weeks.

SophiaMarie and ndgrrl, thanks for sharing (just getting caught up), I've had unusual occurrences like those lately: walking into a room and forgetting what I was there for, looking for an object and it was right in front of me, forgetting where I put something and the most disturbing: my grocery store recently rearranged the floor layout and it takes me long to get shopping done. Was concerned my mom's Alzheimer's was rubbing off

I also had upset stomach when I first started Tamoixifen.  It did get better after the first 3 weeks or so. I still have some tummy issues but they are a whole lot better. I have been on Tamo since Sept 25.

Thanks Runfree. I hope the pain doesn't last. Feels a bit better today. Might have been exacerbated by not being able to sleep well over the last few weeks,

I've decided to go ahead and start it tomorrow and see how it goes. I'm planning on being the % with no major se. Thanks ladies for the positive energy.

thanks. I am interested in trying to learn and understand natural medicine. Like all the supplements people take and why so I can have a natural tool box for myself. It's just so much out there I'm not sure where to start.

    Hi butterfleyez,

Great that you're starting the Tamoxifen. ost of us don't have major SEs - the most common from everything I can tell is hot flashes. If you do look into natural meds, you do want to make sure to talk to your onc about them as they can sometimes interfer with the action of the tamoxifen (you probably already know that - I didn't go back and read very far on the board). Good luck with the SEs & if you do have any know that there are ways to relieve most of them. : )

I've been taking it since mid November. I had started hot flashes during rads, so can't blame the tamox, though it is worse at night now. Other than sometimes noticing a funny taste in my mouth, no noticeable se's - except strange dreams! Normally I rarely remember dreams, but now I remember every night. Not nightmares, but weird. Last night my surgeon was operating on me - woke me up some to finish some work on my eye, and when I was more fully coming to, I realized that she hadn't done what I went in for. Last night someone had set up a rummage sale in our driveway and refused to leave! I'm glad they're not scary, but it's still kinda unsettling. They've started maybe the last two weeks. Anyone else?

Yup ... lots of vivid dreams here too. Most aren't bad dreams, just odd, and as you say, I remember more of them than previous to Tamoxifen.

I did have hot flashes for a couple months (started about 4 months in, ended about 6 months in) but haven't had any in a while.

Add me to the list of VIVID DREAMERS! So far they have just been really crazy, but I dread if one night it's a nightmare because of how vivid and real they seem! The first one I had had to do with my being in some kind of cave and there were all these bottles that were gold. And they were so bright they were almost blinding. I know I dream in color but never anything close to this ever, ever!

Count me in on the vivid dreams! I've only had one really scary one. The rest are just . . .  interesting.  I kind of enjoy them. My husband woke up the other day and told me he had just taken a final without ever going to class and he scored a 63%. I asked him if he had taken my Tamoxifen by mistake!

Yes, my dreams are vivid too - or maybe it just seems that way, since it's almost like I'm not fully asleep!

I'm now in month 5 of Tamoxifen and night sweats are still going strong!

Ty for your replies! I have now started taking it with food--good suggestion. I take it in the morning but may switch to night. I'm wondering, since I just started, if my body is just getting used to its and if the stomach issues will eventually go away. If it causes me a lot of problems my MO will take me off of it since I am not even ER+, only PR+. I wish Tamoxifen was my miracle drug!

I take it at night. I was having hot flashes at first, but they are over...I hope so anyways.

I had vivid dreams often during my first year of taking Tammi, but less so now. It was sooooo weird, for sure, tho not necessarily scary. However if they had included any nightmare material, I'd be leaping out of bed since they seemed soo real! Would love to understand the science behind this phenomenon!

I have had vivid dreams since childhood, and they haven't changed since I started tamoxifen. If anything, they're a bit "feverish" these days because I'm asleep but aware of the hot flashes/night sweats. The dreaming side effect is interesting to hear about!

So I've been on the Teva brand tamoxifen now for almost a month, and I'm very happy to say night sweats/hot flashes are nothing like they were on Mylan brand, they're much milder than when on Mylan brand, and believe me when I said the DH is the most excited and now I don't have to have the a/c on when it's 35 degrees outside! I still have the fatigue, insomnia, and bone and joint pain, but all are manageable.

Had an unexpected surgery yesterday so only stopped taking Tamoxifen on the day! Any idea how long before I can start taking it again? I have an appointment with the ONC in mid-January and don't really want to have to see him earlier just to ask that (too many doctors already planned!).
