oh for a good nights sleep! I go to bed early but wake up with the sweats and can’t get back to sleep. I STAY tired. I go for my 3 month after Christmas. I am going to ask about the sleep issues and the night sweats and hot flashes (I swear I don’t flash, there is nothing fast about getting hot and staying hot!). I know I’ve been through a lot but I’m so ready to get back to a more normal schedule. I am in bed by 7:30 pm and still find myself wiped out at the end of the work day at 3:30. Ble

Wow, I can't believe ANYONE can sleep through the night. I haven't done it since my first kid was born 14 years ago.

TaRenee-
We’re in the same boat! I saw one of your other posts about missing wearing warm comfy pajamas and sleeping under the covers, and boy do I feel that! Right now I’m on prednisone anyway, so sleep is a cruel joke. Until about 7 pm when I’m crashing hard. But here it is at almost 3am, and I’m here skimming the boards!
Here’s to some peace and rest for all of us

I'm with you, Trvler. I started waking up in the middle of the night a few years ago. Figured menopause starting to kick in. And yes being a mommy doesn't help, either.
Haven't noticed major difference on Tamox. I do take Melatonin as well.

Oh well....as my dtr who deals, with insomnia says, sleep is overrated! Love, Jean

my sleep hasn't changed; however, have only been on it a week now. initially more hotflashes earlier in week but seem to have died down some now.

having more joint pain in both knees and left shoulder. after I move it around a bit it is better. I have only been on this drug a week. Does the pain go away after a while?

Merry Christmas Tamoxifen sisters! May your day be merry and bright
I (thankfully) have not experienced joint pain. My SE are hot flashes and night sweats (!!!!!!) along with leg cramps, insomnia and fatigue. Those are the worst I have (right now). My shoulder pain I don’t attribute to Tamoxifen because I had that before I started all this.

TRalph, you have to get moving and keep moving while on Tamoxifen. Moving helps maintain your joints, and helps prevent blood clots. If I don't walk, my knees let me know. Merry Christmas to everyone!!

thanks Michelle, yes walking does make it feel better. i already walk once to twice daily (have a dog) for about 30 minutes. the night cramps /pain in knees seem to be getting a bit better....... hopefully haven't spoken too soon. still sore getting up and down stairs and up from sitting position. I am taking low dose asa to prevent clots so hopefully that works. Michelle did your joint improve after awhile on it?
Merry Christmas to all!

Knee pain seems to be a bit better but now my left hand four digits are numb on and off. Worse when in bed. Doesn't seem to fit the criteria for carpal tunnel. Also my left shoulder pain has been acting up past couple of mintha. I have history of bursitis and it feels like that. (Opposite side of breast cancer) . Left hand also seems slightly puffy. Can this be caused from Tamoxifen? I would think it should be both hands if that was the case. Help?

Hi everyone. I have a question. I recently switched to a different cancer center nearer where I live. I told the NP I am not sleeping well so she said it was ok to take Tylenol PM. She even called the pharmacist. I told her I was told by my previous Oncologist that I could not take anything with Benedryl in it which includes Tylenol Pm. I am so confused. Why do the Dr's in the different centers disagree. Anyone else been told not to take it?
Thanks

Ndgrrl. I haven't been told that. Looking at my my med interaction checker they are ok to take together. Maybe there is another reason they don't want you taking it?

Ndgrrl I found the information on this site that you need. Found under an article bco posted about tamoxifen. Although it doesn't actually interact itcan block tamoxifen effectiveness; see below.
" Also, certain medications can block the activity of the CYP2D6 enzyme, including antidepressants known as SSRIs and SNRIs, as well as Benadryl (chemical name: diphenhydramine) and Tagamet (chemical name: cimetidine)."

Does anyone have digestive issues? My MO started me on 10 mgs of Tamoxifen for 2 weeks and then increased it to 20 mgs. Since I started the higher dose, I have diarrhea every morning. That is very unlike me. I asked my MO if this can be a side effect. She said no, but I disagree. I haven't change anything in my diet etc. I started taking a high dose of probiotics but that hasn't helped either. I also asked if I could split my dose to 10 & 10 and she said no. Im not sure why? My husband is a pharmacist and he said even though it isn't listed as a SE, it could still be a possibility. Sorry to ramble on but this is a nuisance.

Starting new probiotics can cause diarrhea until your body adjusts to them. You may want to taper onto them more gradually

You can do 10 and 10. I agree with your husband. I do 10 and 10. I get a little wave of hunger after taking my meds.

Michelle, I wonder why my MO said that I couldnt split my dose? Even my husband wasn't sure why
0 -
That is strange they said you couldn't spilt the pill. My pharmacist told me i could.
I was also told every body reacts different and SE can be different. My advice would be to stop the probiotics.
If it keeps yo, have you been sick? Been in a hospital? Could it be a virus?

I haven’t been sick etc. I didn’t start the probiotic until after I had the SE so I don’t think that is the cause. I think I may split the dose and see if that helps. If not, I can go back to once a day. I am extremely sensitive to meds. I am the odd ball that gets strange SE. For example, anti nausea drugs make me throw up. Have a Happy New Uear!

teach70--- I was told to not split Tamoxifen, that it won't work properly. Instead ask your pharmacist to fill your prescription with 10mg tablets and take 2 a day as long as your doctor is ok with it.

Anyone here ever have high liver enzymes on tamoxifen. Mine have steadily rose over the past year to twice normal high and if they get any higher, MO said he will order ultrasound of liver. Of course, in the back of my mind I worry about met

Lala1, I would question WHY you are not to split tamoxifen. There might be a solid reason. Or there might be no reason at all. I think too often we swallow the pill without knowing what we're doing and take too much on faith without substantiating evidence. I am not saying you were given bad advice, but I think women need to question, HARD, the answers, reasons and medications they are given. If someone tells me that splitting a 20mg pill in half is a bad idea, they better have the evidence to back that statement up. Because frankly, that makes no sense.

Lovinggrouches, elevation in liver enzymes has been reported as an uncommon side effect oftamoxifen, with rare cases of liver failure and death:
scroll down past all the other myriad of possible side effects to the part about hepatic issues:
https://www.drugs.com/sfx/tamoxifen-side-effects.html
However, the doc should also look for other things that raise enzymes (fatty liver if you gained weight, hepatitis exposure, other meds, etc).

I wouldn't split a pill unless it's designed to be split (to be sure of dosage and in case the outer coating is protective). Tamoxifen is not designed to be split, and there are warnings against it. That's good enough for me. It's easier and better to get the 10 mg pills as suggested by lala1.

Very interesting. I wonder if this applies to all tamoxifen, but my pills come with a score line on them. Generally pills that are not meant to be split do not have that score line.
This warrants further investigation.

Don't split the pill. Get 10mgs 2x per day, instead. Pharmacists do not recommend the splitting of any anti hormonal medication.

Reguarding the Liver enzymes, I received my imaging results from my CT of my abdomen and pelvis given for my upcoming DIEP surgery and they said my Liver was fatty and slightly enlarged, they didn't seem worried about it though as far as the surgery goes. I googled it and one of the few meds than can cause it is Tamoxifen. I've only been in it for two and a half months though so I doubt it has caused it in that short of time but I'll definetly discuss with my MO later this week. Steroids was also on the list and I was given a crap tons of those this past year with chemo. I'm definetly not obese which is also a reason.
