My hair grew back greyer and curlier - one good thing about that is that, because I look older, people out in the street and on buses, etc treat me better, eg. open doors for me, let me sit down, help me to lift things...

I love it when I give someone my work ID or Driver's license because I had long hair...they look and look.

    Hi

My hair had started growing back almost a month after chemo ended and then it was so nice and soft (like a babies).  I had started training at BT (British Telecom) as a sales advisor and we had this Jamaican trainer (a very very funny man) who could talk for England.  Anyway we came back into the training room after having lunch on the very first day of training and we all hung up our coats and he said if anybody has anything else to take off can they do so straight away because he didn't want people getting up during the lesson etc so I asked if I could take my hair of (ie my wig) and he said whatever you fancy, so I did and his face was a picture I don't think he said anything for at least 10 minutes.  Up to today and this is about 3 years ago my friends who trained with me still laugh about it.  But yes the hair grew back quickly.  My hair now hangs just below my shoulders and grew back curly but same colour as b4.

    Hope this helps

It's going to be interesting to see reactions when I go to Cancun in a couple of weeks and give them my passport and/or driver's license.  Long hair in both pictures - hope they don't give me too much trouble in light of the Christmas scare (I'm leaving from Detroit too!!).

I  never thought about my passport!  I wonder how long my hair will be in May when we go on the Breast Cancer Survivor's cruise.  Maybe there will be so many of us there who don't match our passports, they won't know what to do.

LOL, that would be funny to see, so many not matching their passport picture!

Hi all, what a great discussion going on here!

I just actually applied to renew my work permit and I sent in a letter explaining why I looked so different in this photo compared to one a year ago!

Do I need to be concerned about wearing a hat or scarf through airport security? I hardly ever wear my wig (it's a special occasion kind of thing) and don't want to wear it for several hours for the flight etc. Any thoughts?

They may ask you to take your hat or scarf off to make sure you don't have something inside of them.  You can wear your wig through airport security - they won't know the difference and then if you want go to a restroom and change back into a hat.

Fortunately I had enough hair (1") when I flew to Las Vegas so I just packed my wigs and went au natural.  They did take a couple of looks at my driver's license though.

gillyone - hi. Maybe, you should take a letter from your onc with you in case they give you any problems at security? Just a thought.

I am not sure that I would have wanted to take off my scarf even in a private room for a security check.

    Hugs to all, Judy x

I have flown internationally a couple of time during treatment and they just pat your head a little and do not ask you to take off your scarf.  I hope this helps.  Have a great trip and God Bless, Kathy

Jinny - you made my morning!  LOL!  I love your humor and it did brighten my morning!

I am 1 year out from Chemo (WOOOOHOOOO) and have about 6 inches of hair.  I colored my hair pre-chemo but now I have beautiful white hair on the sides and Grey on top.  The dark remaining came in black but my original hair color was brown, and very curly on the back of my head.  The Onc said it would be that way AND he was right!   Honestly, I was so happy to have hair to shampoo that I didn't care what color it was.  I have always had long hair but I have to say this length is fun!

Jane.....please tell us more about the Breast cancer Survivor cruise.  Sounds like fun!

Gilly....I have the same feelings about my wig.  Hardly ever wear it.  I am leaving in a week for Florida and did not want to wear my wig on the plane.  So I think I will stick with a scarf.  I'll take my chances.

The breast cancer survivor's cruise is being sponsored by Amoena (they make mastectomy supplies) and Breast Cancer Wellness Magazine.  The details are on the magazine web site:  http://www.breastcancerwellness.org/cruise.html.  It is a 7 day cruise that leaves from Ft. Lauderdale and goes to Key West, Cayman Islands and Jamaica.  An inside cabin is only $588.  It is on Carnival Cruise Lines.  It is May 2-8.  So far, I have convinced 2 women from my "Starting Chemo Sept 08" thread to go.  Genia and I are sharing a room and Juli is looking for a room mate.  There will be special speakers, including survivors and Drs.  Everyone gets a gift bag and there are special events on the cruise just for the bc group.  I can't wait (114 days, but who's counting).  I'd love if more of you guys would join in.  It would be great to meet in person!

    Hi Paulding Mom

I was someone who always wore my hair short (not THIS short, but maybe 5 inches).  My hairdresser used to have a conniption when she would go to put "product" in after a haircut, and I would never let her. She convinced me about 2 years ago (before dx) to try a Redkin hair product called Rough Paste 12. Well, I am about 14 weeks PFC, and my hair is 2" high, but I don't know what I would do with it without the rough paste.  After it's dry, I just put a pea-sized amount in my hand, rub my hands together and then rub them over and through my hair.  I can style it funky (spiky up straight in front, slicked down on sides), or off center with a tiny bang (and I mean tiny...maybe 1/16 of an inch!).  Looks like a very short Jamie Lee Curtis style.  My normal hair color is a medium brown with graying (although I have dyed it a reddish brown for so long, I had to really think about it's true color...always absolutely stick-straight..not a curl or wave before I lost it all.  It came back as soft as can be, with a subtle wave, not curly as some have.  It is also now a platinum white with dark roots, and people who don't know my story have started asking where I get my hair done - they love the color and the cut.  If I'm feeling really bold, I tell them my oncologist does my hair, otherwise I say thank you, I go to the city - they must think I pay a few hundred dollars for this.  Well, actually when you think of it, it is a very expensive style - probably $50 - 75,000.  Maybe that should be my new bold line...save up your money if you want this style...my bad!

A cruise sounds so great, next year - I still have Herceptin for 6 months, my expander exchange and an elective mastectomy - hope to be all done in July.  PARTY next winter...

    Happy New Year All

    Hi Geri,

I am going to try that product, it sounds perfect? Where did you buy it? Is it easy to find?

Helen - where are you? Are you doing ok this week?

Hugs to all for a good weekend, Judy xoxox

Someone else previously mentioned the Redkin Rough Paste, too.  It sounds good.  I can't wait to get enough hair to try it.

Also, someone said to try Roux Fanci Full color styling mousse.  Tell us more about it and how well it works!!!  I looked it up online and it is very affordable (about $10) but I am wondering what color to go with for dark brown hair.

Hi, All, I'm a newbie here...had a port put in yesterday and I have my first chemo treatment on Monday...and I'm wondering - when will my hair begin to fall out?  I'll be having TCH...

My hair is being totally weird. After my second tx (TC) my hair started growing! I have 1/8-1/4" of fuzz on my head with an occasional 1" hair strand. I told the onc I think they gave me fake drugs last time! Go figure. But I have two more tx so who knows what will happen. Also, had absolutely no nausea afterwards but today (18 days later) I feel awful -- exhausted and nauseous. I'm confused.

Hope everyone is having a good day.

Geri -  I just cracked up when I read your line about your onc doing your hair!  Too funny!

BTW, I think your pic is gorgeous!  I think I'm going to have to color mine, no grey really, about the same length as yours in your pic, but as someone on the boards described it, the color of "pencil lead"..... booooooooooooooooooooooring.

    Have a great weekend all!

Hi Patmichaud - I am on TCH also and hair started coming out on day 18.  I haven't buzzed it yet, as it is still passable.  It will be a war between keeping it for vanity (while it still looks okay) and getting tired of cleaning up the shedding hair!

You'll be surprised when it starts to come out.  It's like a switch went off.  On day 17 it was fine when I combed it - on day 18 it came down like snow.  amazing.

I got a short haircut before first chemo and that helps to reduce the trauma I think - I see your hair is short already as well.

Good luck with your treatments!  I just had #2 yesterday - bring 'em on and get it over with!

Weety - I am the one that mentioned the Roux colored mousse - I originally was told by CCBaby to try it.  It will color the gray hairs but not the normal hair is what I found.  I wanted to get lighter than my mousey brown and didn't have any luck buying #16 which was hidden honey.

I went to a Sally's Beauty Supply store to get mine.  They have a good variety of DARK colors and they do have a nice red color.  They were nice enough to let me squeeze some on my hand and see how it changed my hair color.  The red was the only one that really made a change since I didn't want to go darker (chocolate brown).  However, the nice thing was that I had some gray and white hair and after applying it I was amazed because you could actually see my hair and it made my hair look fuller and longer.

I have experimented with molding paste - I tried Special Effects Molding Wax first and loved it.  I was about out of that product so I bought some Pantene Texture Sculpting Wax but actually prefer the Special Effects brand and it is cheaper.  My hair doesn't feel sticky and there is really no odor to speak of.

I am on weekly taxol now, just had #5. My hair is actually starting to grow back. I have longer fuzz then a five o'clock shadow starting.

Anybody else have this happen? Does it keep growing or will it fall out again?

    Hi Lovetosail and Patmichaud,

I am also on TCH and started to shed 15 days after my first treatment.  I had my second tx yesterday and decided to buzz my hair. It was liberating!  Lovetosail, forget caterpillar  to butterfly analogy and think Demi Moore in G.I. Jane!

    Best to everyone,

    Pam
