I am 16 MONTHS post chemo and still having hair issues.  I hate this curly, fuzzy, hair.  There are days when I feel like I can't do this anymore.  If my hair was long and I could put it up, the curl would be OK, but its just short fuzz..........................

I'm 6 weeks PFC, and the hair on my head is starting to come in more. I always had a little stubble, but now I can pinch it with my fingertips. You can definitely still see scalp, but the hair is growing. I wish it would hurry up though...I really want to go hat/scarfless asap.

BUT I've also noticed my eyebrows are growing back in very fast. Pretty soon I won't have to fill in the extra space. That's exciting. My eyelashes are also starting to come back. Each morning I check for new growth, and they're coming back in quickly. I'm nervous that I'll end up losing everything though, like a few of the ladies on the board. Hopefully they'll stay put!!!

MBJ - Yes, I will be taking Tamoxifen starting two weeks after rads. Hope it isn't one of the drugs that causes slow hair growth. So your avatar shows your hair color as it is now - right? You've gone from very dark to very light - that must have been a change. It looks great -- three inches seems so long to me, I probably have almost an inch. So far its gone from this ugly whitish-transparent color to a salt and pepper color, not sure what I'll end up with but I was a very highlighted light brown (or dark blonde) color. And it was straight. What's coming in now looks wavy. I have three wigs  - all different colors and lengths. It's been fun to wear them but it's a lot easier in the colder months than the summer. Hate the heat - guess I'd better keep them handy it sounds like the regrowth and color correction will take some time. Tx for responding.

Everett - Like the pics, gives me some idea what to expect. I'm curious too , what was your hair like pre-chemo?

I had natural curly hair before chemo. Now my hair is coming in straight. I thought when my hairdresser cut it in layers the curl would come back. No deal. I sat in the chair and cried. I am still depressed about it. When I lost my hair I cried for a little while and then was okay with being bald. I just want to shave off what I have, I hate it so much.

Oh veggy, don't cry.  Straight hair is so much easier than the fuzzy, kinky stuff other women have.  You can always put some curl back in it.  Just be patient.  Try to enjoy the new look and when it gets long enough, put some curl back in your locks!!!!

    Evening Ladies -

Rocket - Wonder what is causing the eyelash/eyebrow problems.  I was thinking maybe the Herceptin which I am still getting but can't be as you are not taking Herceptin.   A left over from the chemo, then when do you suppose it might stop?

How fast is everyone's hair growing back in?  Mine is slooooooooow.  A slight 1/8" in 3 weeks.  1 5/8" of tight little ringlets that just do their own thing and with cowlicks going all directions but the right directions.  Bought an inexpensive curling iron - a 1/2"m to see if I can smooth.  Looking forward to trying it.

Hey veggy, I am also a pre-cancer treatment curly haired girl.  I love my curls...granted not when I was a teenager..but once I grew up I loved my hair.  Mine came back way curlier and it is still pretty thin in spots even though it has been 19 months since my last chemo.  I have noticed that as I get it trimmed my hair is returning to its original curl (pre-chemo).  So hang in there, your hair might very well, over time, return to its glorious curly ways.

LilyLou...my hair grew in fairly steady at first and then it really slowed down to a crawl.  My eyebrows are barely there at all even though I am 19 months post TC and my eyelashes are very skimpy.  I definitely have the cowlick thing happening which to be honest I don't remember having before chemo.  Ahh...the joys of chemo....  Wink...

Maybe the Hair forum isn't the place to ask this, but how do you care for a bald head? I buzzed it down and now the top has come out and is pretty much bald, just some fuzz left in the back. I've been washing with my bath soap and putting aloe vera on my head because it feels good. Should I be using a shampoo? Someone said use Nioxin. Should I be using it now or just when chemo is over and the hair starts to come back. Where do you buy Nioxin? Walmart doesn't have it. I never thought I'd be asking this question!

Hello all! Wow, it is so nice to see everyones hair pictures. But I must say, I have to smile when I come to this thread. It reminds me of the movie "Ground Hogs Day". I have been coming here for almost 2 years, and every few months it gets new girls and we all ask the same questions.

Anyways, I am now 2 years PFC Woooo Hooooooo! I have the frizzy curly hair, that is NOT going away. It is relaxing a bit as it gets longer, from the weight..but still frizzy. And I am one that does NOT like it! For the new girls, I have pictures on my profile of my hair growth, pretty much took one every month, so I could see the growth. In the beginning, I would have thought I would have more hair now than I do. Obviously, I am trying to grow it long again. For anyone else wanting to grow long, when you go for a trim (which you should do on occasion, it helps the hair grow) make sure they don't take much off from the area above the back of your neck. On me, they kept cutting that to keep it even with everything else. That hair on me is about 2-3 inches shorter than my longest areas.

Here is my current hair status!

Pre-Chemo my hair was extremely thick and wavy.  It's still thick, but alot more curly.  I'm hoping that as it gets longer the curls will loosen up.

Hi LadyinBama: I just used a couple of drops of Johnson's Baby Shampoo on my scalp when in the shower and rinsed it well. This seemed to work fine. I think the aloe vera sounds good too. I looked at the Nioxin but thought it was too expensive.

ladyinbama:  You can get Nioxin at a beauty supply store or on line.  I washed my head with shampoo even when I didn't have hair!  I have also been using Rogaine since I finished chemo, because I wanted a full head of hair right away, now LOL!  I buy the Target version and it's inexpensive.  Nioxin always has specials--Last year at Christmas time I got a 50% on the combo deal.  I usually buy the largest containers which is a combo deal of shampoo and conditioner and it lasts forever, because you don't really need much.  I might buy shampoo 2 x a year at the most.

LadyinBama,    someone suggested I use Head & Shoulders so that I'd not get dry and flakey scalp like they did.    I've been using just a bit of it each time I shower and have had no issues whatsoever.

Everett78:  Your hair looks fantastic.  So pretty!  I am 6 months out from my last chemo, and my hair isn't quite as long as yours.  But mine is thick, soft and so very curly!!  And it is soooooo easy!  Just wash, gel and go!!  I do get compliments on it, though, and most people say, "Oh, your short hair is just so cute!"  Cute??  I am 62 yrs old and am a little bit old to be referred to as "cute."  But cute or not, I am grateful -- I'm a survivor, and I have hair again!!  Best wishes, all!

    Hello Ladies...

I am online minimal....  but I have been checking out some of your hair pictures and some really beautiful pics.

Well I had my very first haircut on Thursday, and I am nearly 8 months post chemotherapy.

My hair in fact at the back mostly was growing in very, very curly and wavy every where else on my head.  I really could not do much with my hair, particularly the back and top... could not do a part at the top..

Well, I have always wanted a style similar to Jamie Lee Curtis... and also I thought it was a good idea to get rid of allot of the first growth of hair after chemo (I call it chemo hair).  Hair dresser suggests coming for a trim every 6 weeks for a little while.

Yes my hair has all grown in gray, and in fact allot of ladies around where I live and at my moms nursing home and at my doctors office all say I look great with gray hair, and in fact I am starting to like it myself.  (so have decided to not dye my hair).

Here is a picture of me with new hair cut as of Thursday September 23rd...

    Charmaine

PS...  You might notice a problem with the left side of my face.  I have neuralgia in the left side of my face, and it has really been acting up as of late.  (does not seem to be much the doctor can do about it - other than to give me steroids when it acts up).

Charmaine,   that short style does look good on you!    I'm afraid mine will come back all grey as well.    I've always said if I could have a pretty (IMO)  white / silvery grey,   I'd keep it.   But mine  (I think?)  used to be an ugly, dark, mousy grey.    Since I colored the roots every six week,  I don't really know - LOL

We shall see . . .   it's interesting, the anticipation to see what we'll have - te he

I have had 3 rounds of Taxol  (after 4 AC's)   and have been feeling whispy fuzz on the top of my head for a couple of weeks.   It has really increased just in this past week and I'm excited - I hope it hangs tight!

charmaine:  Your hair looks absolutely gorgeous!  I'd not change a thing.  I'm sorry about the neuropathy, we all seem to get it in various places (me--feet).

ginger:  My hair was brunette before chemo, came back in all GREY, let it grow a bit, then had it colored back to brunette, and it was so soft and curly!  Then it went straight and lost a bit due to tamoxifen, so I now have it permed (yeah, and colored, the things we do!).   If it comes in grey, there's always color,   If all our hair looked like charmaine's, we'd not even worry!  :)    ~juli

MBJ, those pictures are just a couple days apart. Just showing the curly side of things, and then if I try to style it (which takes forever)!

Charmaine & Everett - great pictures.

Goldie:  Well, your hair looks great in both pictures!!!

Charmaine:  Your hair doesn't look gray, it looks more like platinum and very cute!  Mine came in a kind of steel gray, old lady color-not the look I have in mind when I look at myself in the mirror.  Interesting about the neuropathy of the face!  I noticed that one side of my face kindo of just "fell" after starting chemo.  Is this what you mean?  It aged me 20 years!  Your hair looks so cute I'm kind of jealous!!!  I would kill not to have to dye my hair.

Charmaine your hair looks fantastic!  I love the platinum - is that all natural?  If so you're lucky because it's really a great look for you!

Mine is so thick and curly that I just go with it most days but lately have taken to blow drying the front.

It's good to come here and read how everyone is doing with their hair.  Thanks to Goldie for posting her photos so we have some hope for longer hair if that's what we want.

I'll try and post a photo sometime this weekend.

MBJ: I have had neuropathy in my face before cause of migraines.  BUT after chemotherapy it got really bad in my face.  Yes I have heard about neuropathy to the face as a result of chemotherapy.   It is really acting up bad right now.  I often get a numb and tingling feeling in the lower part of my left face, closer to the mouth.

As for being really curly, the back of my hair was very, very curly before my cut.  But when I went to get it cut I decided that I wanted the Jamie Lee Curtis cut...
