Hair Hair Hair - Another question

Nodapearl - I had the Blowout back in April, 2 days after I found the lump that led me to BC. I had very curly hair so it was a bit of a shock to have it come out stick straight. Once my curl started coming back, I really liked it - it was soooo easy to manage, no frizz, and very little goopy product required. My daugher also had it done, but she has tons and tons of thick curly hair, so it took 2 treatments to get hers to calm down. It would be fun if you could post some before/after pics!0

Charmaine: Have you tried your local Embassy? They might be able to assist you. Hugs.
Today, I was officially able to finally use my Revlon 1" Flat Iron!!! Still can't blow dry it, but after using tons of Marc Anthony Straight Cream and air drying it, I now have enough length to straighten it!!! You can see my "after" picture in my avatar: kinda Joan Jet meets, Green Day, meets Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, right??!!0 -
Charmaine so sorry to read about your father's passing...
I wish that I had the Neulasta but my insurance would only cover the Neupogen. That meant 7 shots after chemo - every chemo - 6 times. You do the math. I was running out of places to inject the needles and then I started having marks from the bandaids. It looked like I had lime disease.
My hair is growing like crazy! I had it cut 3 weeks ago - before my TE surgery - and now it looks like I need another trim.
Here's a photo taken this morning:
Happy hair growing to you all!

Marie: your hair looks beautiful. I cut mine myself with a Wahl hair trimmer in August as it was becoming too long and unwieldy, and hot! It had grown back to be about the same length and curl as yours (but so much whiter) when I went to the hairdresser this week. My preferred hairstylist wasn't there so I agreed to go with a newly hired young stylist. She gave me a very cropped barbershop type haircut. When I complained that it looked too mannish, she said she would feather it a bit, but there wasn't enough hair left to do that. I'm really back to looking like a chemo patient again. One good thing though is that this cut seems to have taken away all the wiry, coarse hair and for the first time, my hair actually squeaks when I wash it.

Has anyone used penguin caps? or heard that they worked?

Marie, your hair looks nice! How long post chemo is this?
MJB, love the new profile pic!

Carrol2 I did not use the penguin caps, but there is a thread cold cap users past and present to save hair.

the cold cap guy told me there is a 15% chance my hair would not grow back. anyone hear this?

Carrol: I found out too late about the cold cap and if you can get it I think it would be worth the discomfort!

Marie: Wow, your hair grows fast!!! It really looks great. I cannot wait until my hair gets that long!
Gingersfavorite: Thank you! That's 7 months of growth and two 1" off haircuts later.

MBJ i tink it's too late for me too. My chemo starts on tuesday. Plus the expense is way high

Maybe try a water bottle filled with ice? Maybe check the thread on here and see if you can get some input. did you get a wig yet? I bought mine before I started--one that looked just like my real hair, cut color & styled by my hair stylist. It was real hair and lasted 6 months before it started looking wig like. Kept me warm all through winter, too.

Carrol2 There is another company that makes the caps. Check out www.elastogel.com They are sold here in the US. You can call the company and ask any questions. They list the companies that sell them and I am sure you can have them shipped express. I used the gloves to save my nails but had already lost my hair when I hear about them.0

So far, I LOVE the Brazilian Blowout. It was way expensive, but if the results last like they are supposed to, I feel like my hair issues will be behind me!!!!! I wish I would have done it sooner though, because my hair would be significantly longer as I would not have kept cutting my curls off!!! This week is my two year cancerviersary from diagnosis. I am ready to move on.

Nodapearl: Congratulations on your 2 year anniversary. Are you going to show us a picture of your fabulous new flat, straight hair????

Nancy91355, working from memory (should have written things down) I did get the Rosemary shampoo and almond oil today. Thought I did well. But just came back to look up your original post. and see that I was to have gotten rosemary oil as well - aw shoot!
Was wondering..... do I just add the drops of oil to my hand, before shampooing?
Looks like I need to add Boitin to my shopping list too (LOL)
I am going to copy what you wrote, in case others are curious - and as a reminder to myself
Just a little to share: I saw a physician specializing in conventional and alternative medicine this past week (she's an internist). She said for quick re-growth, Rosemary shampoo with 5 drops of Rosemary oil & Almond oil 5-10 drops. Rub into scalp in the shower, wash off. Also, Biotin - looks like 250 mg (bad handwriting, just like an MD) & Nettles - for hair & nail growth. I'll e-mail to get clarification of how to take Biotin and Nettles. She said she can guarantee the Rosemary & Almond oils work. I'm buying them this weekend.

Carol, Thank you. My hair is comeing in but very slowly. Are we suppose to put the different oil drops on our scalps or into the bottle of shampoo?

Thanks for the kind comments on my hair!
It's nice to see everyone's updates and new avatar photos. I wish the old ones would remain with the previous posts instead of all changing. It takes me a bit of time to figure out who everyone is again!
I've been using regular Pantene shampoo and conditioner and massaging Moroccan Oil into my hair and scalp after I wash it. No rinsing. Not sure if that makes it grow faster but it does give it a nice sheen and makes it feel softer.
I'm 8 1/2 months PFC and have had my hair CUT 3 times (with a couple of mini trims around the ears during this time too). Not taking much off the top but lots of shaping on the sides and back to keep it looking like it's intentionally short.
Right now it feels like a bushy helmet. At some point I'll have to decide to grow it out and suffer through the "fullness" and growing out phase or keep getting it cut every 3-4 weeks!
This is not new for me - both my hair and nails grow really fast and always have! At least now I don't have the skunk line showing - a definite advantage to going with my "natural" colour (gray!).
Well it's off to bed for me!
Happy hair growing to the rest of you!
Marie

I have my hair cut so it looks intentionally short. But my hair is growing back thin. I lost all the chemo curls quite quickly. I am almost a year past chemo.

I found that I can no longer use shampoo daily, only conditioner and then a couple days a week I will shampoo. My hair is so coarse where before it was fine as a baby's! Crazy chemo hair.

Just chiming in to say I had no problems whatsoever with Neulasta shots. I had four and don't remember any problems. I would have to "reserve" the entire evening to lay on the couch though, as they did seem to knock me out, but that could also have been because I was 24 hours post chemo for each shot...

Also wanted to show everyone my happy face because I am so very close to ditching the wig, I can't hardly stand it! October 15 is the big day, I've decided. My last chemo was May 21, so it will be very close to 5 months of growth.

GoogsMN thanks so much I was just chiming in with lago on the TC thread that we are both afraid fo the neulasta shot glad to hear a good report fingers crossed!

It has been a fantastic fall weekend! Wanted to share this photo .... I was talking with my dad and brother (who is visiting from FL) about my new hair growth. They each rubbed their heads, joking that theirs is probably just a bit longer than mine! (And they're right!) Made for some laughs and a fun / keepsake photo though!

Hi,
I wrote a couple of weeks ago that I was going to get the Brazilian Blow Dry. Well I had it done 2 weeks ago so thought I'd share. It's 10 months since my last chemo session.
Like most people my hair grew back super curly. Around 5" at the back and between 3.5" and 4" elsewhere. Think Ronald McDonald with a mullett not a good look.
When I got to the salon they couldn't believe how curly my hair was and looked at it in wonder or was that despair?! Anyway, the procedure took around 2 hours from start to finish and my afro turned into super straight hair. So straight that my stylist couldn't cut it. So they sent me off for an hour to do some shopping and after that I got my hair washed and styled. It took around 5 minutes with the hair dryer to get super sleek hair. However, at home I just wash and go my hair is straight at the top but has some curl at the bottom but it looks nice.
I had the organic version which is suitable for pregnant women and children. I know some versions you have to wait for 4 days before you can wash your hair but I only had to wait an hour. I am very happy with the result. Before the BB I was still wearing my wig to work as I hated my hair. Now I am loving it.
It lasts between 2 to 3 months but as I only wash my hair twice a week I am hoping it lasts for at least 3 months. The only maintenance is to wash with a sulphate free shampoo.
Hope that helps someone!
Jules
