Does anyone know if Arimidex has any affect on our hair growth? I am 14 weeks PFC (dd) AC/T.
Followed by surgery 10-28 now I'm half way through carboplatin and gemzar. I will finish these February 24, 2012. I have a nice "covering" of hair and went topless for the 1st time this past Saturday. I am hoping my hair continues at this pace or even faster after the carbo/gemzar but just curious about the affect of arimidex.
Thanks, denise

denisday Having less estrogen can cause hair thinning. Some women have experienced this on the AIs. All I can say is today marks 1 year PFC, I've been Anastrozole (generic Arimidex) since March 1st and I have thicker hair than when I started chemo… and I've always had pretty thick hair. Matter a fact I had some hair receding prior to diagnosis and most of it returned. I do use women's Minoxidil 1X a day. I did that when my hair started to recede.
I thought I would for sure but so far I have a ton of hair.

Denisday, I'm on Anastrozole and i have a ton of hair too! I wish it would thin a little. But i have to be careful what i wish for

Thank you both so much. This makes me feel much better. I'm finally getting my hair back and I can't stand the thought of maybe losing it again.

kymn, I have to say you look amazing and beautiful. I see that you are 42 but you look about 30.

For those of you on Herceptin, I am convinced that it slows hair growth. I've been on it since May - last infusion will be May 17th. My hair has been coming in at an agonizingly slow rate. And one temple is sparse, which is weird. I've started with Rogaine to help the process along - I'll let you know how it goes. I have enough hair for a cute hairstyle, so I am not too freaked out, but I am looking forward to getting ALL my hair back. I anticipate pretty rapid growth when I finish the Herceptin.

sweetbean Rogaine can take 3-6 months to star working. I know when I started it years ago it took me about 3 months to start seeing growth. Also once you start you need to keep up with it. I'm sure in time your hair will come back. Some women take longer than others. My hair came back faster than this local gal who wasn't on Herceptin. My hair did come in slower when on Herceptin but normally my hair grows fast so it wasn't so bad.0

My hair came back curly after chemo and thicker. Like Lago, mine felt like stuffed animal fur. It now feels like hair. The curls are still there and I had stick straight auburn hair prior to chemo. It came in black and white as well - mostly black. I colored it with a box color at 12 weeks PFC and went topless. I'm able to straighten the top now, but if I don't it will have curl and wave. Some of the ends are impossible to straighten, despite the fact that I've had my hair trimmed several times in the last year. I am a year and a half PFC.
My lashes and brows fell out completely after I finished chemo and then twice more over the next several months. That was the most discouraging. They grew back, but are not as full as they used to be. I blame it on Anastrazole. I was pre/peri-menopausal prior to my DX, but was thrown into menopause overnight.
Hang in there Ladies! You are beautfiul, strong women, and I think you all look fabulous!

I finally got my first haircut since I got it buzzed in May! Short boy cut, but it's great to have the silver-white curls gone, along with the peach fuzz on my neck. It makes me feel like more of regular person & less of a patient, if you know what I mean...

I know exactly what you mean Granuaile, Lucky you getting a hair cut, the peach fuzz on the neck is driving me crazy.. Waking up with some serious bed head though!!!

OMG, ladies! Yesterday I noticed that I had grown a freaking beard, like overnight! Long, blonde, very fine hairs all over my jawline! Yikes! What's the best way to deal with this besides my DH's electric razor?

Shelley - the Clio Beautytrim Personal Hair Trimmer will do the trick. I think you can get this at any drugstore, maybe at Walmart. When I had my little haircut, my stylist removed mine with a razor - ever so carefully.

I used the Clio

I wax mine....what a pain in the ass hey

Just bought a Clio at Target, not for the beard hairs which I never got, but for the mustache which unfortunately came back when my hair did!

I've been done with chemo for four weeks now (4 AC and 12 Taxol), lost hair, eyebrows and lashes. My hair is starting to grow in - coming in good from ear to ear but there is SO much scalp still showing on the top of my head. Did anyone have that and if so, when did the top start filling in? It's growing in white except for the edges, which are black - looks like I penciled it in. I think if it was all growing in darker, I'd feel like I was making more progress.

justina - a lot of times it grows in white at first then turns darker. I had the slowest growth at the very front on top, but it eventually filled in evenly. It is hard to be patient right now but it will get thicker in time.

Justina,
I'm just over 16 weeks PFC, mine grew in the same way, I thought for sure I'd have this big bald spot on the top of my head and the color would never go back to normal. Now I have a full head of hair, it may be short and starting to curl but the color is good and it's all filled in. Just give it time and you'll be good.

My hair used to be a medium auburn, and now at 15 PFC it is all black and white. I went to see my hairdresser this week, and she calls this "chemo charcoal". She is the area instructor for Look Good Feel Better and has a lot of experience in helping ladies after chemo. She would not color mine until I have an inch of hair as the color will have to process so long to fully take. She told me to come back in 4 weeks. She said that I still had enough scalp showing through in the crown area that if she colored it I would like like somone colored my head with a marker. Not the look I was going for, so try again later . . . .

I am 2 months out and am seeing my hair grow ever so slowly but am happy to see it is growing. I am now facing questions such as why is it growing at different rates. spoke to the image center and found this to be normal although frustrating. Am trying so hard to be patient. So hang in there with me and we will soon have enough hair to style!

My image recovery center helped me. They warned me ahead of time that the top will grow in slower and it has slowly started filling in. I am 3 months out and can hardly wait for my hair to grow back. It is ever so slow! And am told it will look worse before it looks better. ie. sponge bob square pants look. Not looking forward to that phase. Your Cancer treatment center should have an Image Recovery Center as well. They are wonderful and helpful!

I am 6 weeks PFC and have what seems to be reasonable growth, except for the top and front. The new growth is very dark brown with a hint of red (I was a true auburn redhead before) underneath the chemo white that stuck around. Not very pretty, but I am so happy to see it growing. Especially since I have a brand new primary colon cancer dx to go with BC - I may have to have more chemo. Not too thrilled at the prospect of losing what little new hair I have.

I am 16 weeks PFC. My hair growth is very uneven. Sides are thin and the front is much shorter than the back. I also have longer wispy bits that are wiry and stick out like little antennas. Nice. Hair is dishwater grey; it used to be a nice dark blonde. I am going to dye it at 6 months.
MizMarie. I wouldn't want to go through hair loss again either. I'm so sorry you may have to face that. Really hoping you won't have to go this route again...0 -
mizmarie - oh no! Sorry to hear this, what is the plan?
0 -
mizmarie..... what the hell??? How did you find that???? So sorry that this is happening to you.
0 -
Mismarie -- were you having issues with your colon?
0 -
I had no idea there was anything going on with my colon. I did have abdominal cramps and random fevers over the past few months (classic colon cancer symptoms), but these are also chemo SE's, so I never suspected a thing, and since I'm under 50, never had a colonoscopy or other reason to worry about it. I went to the ER on January 2 in extreme pain, thinking I had a cranky ovary, but when they did an ultrasound, they decided it wasn't an ovary, but perhaps diverticulitis. ER doc ordered a CT scan, and boom - a 6 cm mass in my colon that had been there who knows how long. Luckily (miraculously), all 33 lymph nodes they took were negative, and the tumor was contained within the colon. Waiting now for oncotype test results to see if I will need chemo. The other bright spot is that it is was not at all related to my BC - my greatest fear at the time when they gave me the news.
