Kjiberty- ( and others) when did your hair start getting curly?

Thanks for the encouragement.  I just can't cut it yet.  I'm just too emotional about it.  I put it in a pony tail and make an updo for now.  I will cut it when it all reaches my shoulders.  Probably a few more months.  I just can't do it right now.  I know you understand, I just can't.

NKB:  I would say it started getting curly when it got long enough to get curly.  Sounds weird, but I would say about 3 months PFC.  My hair is getting really, really thick.  I doesn't seem longer, just thicker, even though I have had it trimmed three times since PFC on June 28th.

mine curled like when my lawn gets too long - when grass grows - it grows nice and straight till it gets to a point where it flops over and goes in every direction. I really thought I didn't have curl for the first 3-4 months...and even tho I've had 2 cuts and 1 straightening treatment... I am still in what I refer to as "the poodle stage" every day's an adventure !!!

Nkb my hair went back to my normal hair right away. It was wavy and a little curly when there are layers which there are when you grow in from bald. But overall it's the same hair I had before right from the beginning for me. I was hoping it would be straighter but I think I am lucky overall. It's way thicker and healthier and I decided I really like the layers. So not everyone's hair come back different.

mamav I so know what you mean. It's over 2 years PFC now for me and I only cut my hair twice the whole time. Last time I cut my hair was a very slight trim in May.

Now I feel like I want more of a bang again. My bangs are pretty much grown out past my chin now. The top of my hair is getting flat so I think if I get bangs and some more layers up there myight fluff me up again. Plus I will trim and shape the whole head. Which terrorizes me!!!

MamaV- I definitely Understand. I'm going to have to face it in about a month when I color my hair and I know my hairstylist will want me to trim it a little bit and I dread it. I just thought if it would look a little better I would try to do it.

Sounds like from what everybody says that it's going to be growing in layers for a year or two.

I certainly hope mine continues to get thicker. my husband says that the length of my hair is similar to what many women in my area wear which is probably true, but mine is thinner and doesn't look like a style yet.

Thanks everyone for sharing your hair stories no one else understands this obsession, they all think they would be fine without hair. When I was first told I would lose all my hair I was also a bit casual about it but I think it's because I thought it would grow back in three or four months. It is so reassuring to see people who were bald and now have a thick growth of hair again.

A bit of a funny story I went for my colonoscopy yesterday I was wearing my wig which I think doesn't look real but, maybe other people do. Anyway one of the nurses said I love the color of your hair is it natural? I said no and she said "I'll be right back I want the details." When she returned she said "okay do you color it yourself or does someone else do it?" I said " it's a wig, I just had chemo.". Suddenly three or four other nurses came in to all look and tell me how great and natural and beautiful it was. Several neighbors have also told me they like my new hairstyle, I just think it's a lot neater looking then my old hair was and that's what they're noticing, every hair eerily is in place all the time.

Hi - mine came back just as thick as before, just took a long time for the length.  Yes, I had the same experience "who does your hair, it's beautiful"..  but they didn't have the experience of the fried ends..  or being afraid to open the oven door.. or being near candles.. or ANY kind of heat and humidity..  and don't even mention having sex...  all you can think of is "is my wig straight".

Use hairbands - I'm not kidding, as soon as mine was long enough not to wear a wig (it was still REAL short), I started wearing hairbands all the time.  I got so many compliments.. and my hairdresser said "wow you sure are rocking those hairbands, you look fabulous"..  I found these really pretty jeweled type that have elastic down in the back so they don't pinch my head..  It's a really cute look and makes you feel more normal.

    Hope this helps...

mine seems straight tho there are two lil places where it's trying to curl! right now i am more concerned about full coverage so i can go without --there still seem to be areas that are thin...could be just me! as for the trimming-it felt so good to have someone "do something" with my head--i love to have my head worked on so used to volunteer for shampoo class at beauty school! and i realize that it will grow better with the trim.the part that DIL really trimmed was so out of whack with the rest of the head!

i really expect that within the next few weeks i will come in to work without wig!

i don't intend to color it at all as i wa sletting it go natural pre dx...i embrace my silver strands!!!

Hi everyone.  I just love reading posts from people who understand my absolute obsession with my hair!! So thank you!

I am 16 weeks PFC and have been going topless for about 2.5 weeks now.  I just couldn't do it anymore.  I spent $750 on a wig that I never wore once! I felt like an idiot in it, it just wasn't me at all.  I wore a 1/2 wig that goes under hats the entire time.  And about 2 months ago I decided I just couldn't do that anymore either so I was just wearing hats up until a couple of weeks ago.

Everywhere I go people say "your hair looks so great, you can really pull off short hair" which of course just makes me groan.  I am still avoiding mirrors :)

I have a question, I seem to remember someone on these threads recommending something for styling the short hair but I can't find it.  My hair in the last week has gone from just short and straight to having a little bit of curl which is making it look a little wild and unruly.

I tried regular hair gel which made me feel silly because it did NOTHING.  I also tried googling "what to do with short hair" but didn't get any inspiration.

I of course would give anything to not have had this year happen and to have my same old shoulder length boring hair back! But as long as I'm here and only 40 I would love to have a hip hairstyle for once!

Hi! First time to post here, i think! Im 8 weeks pfc and started to go topless last week! It's still patchy, but, wth, it is liberating just to be able to walk out the front door and not care! Couldnt wait to grow it out. Just planning on wearing the wig for church and stuff now.

Rose_d.......I've seen Got 2b Glued in a bright yellow tube recommended quite frequently for the unruly hair. Its's sold at Walmart. I've been using a mega gel from Aussie but think I'm going to buy the Got2b because I need something stronger for my hair, It has a mind of it's own. But, who's complaining?.........At least it's growing!

Here's me, almost 8 months PFC and feeling good!  I actually have gotten 2 haircuts and professional color and highlights.

Hopefully this works, it never seems to even though I have followed the directions!

Kelly,  Your hair looks great.  I am 5 1/2 PFC and no way near getting a trim. I will be done with herceptin in January so then maybe it will begin to grow faster.   You ladies are all so young and pretty, don't know if I will ever post my pic..

Little comfort but at least you'll be donning that wig whatever you choose for the most part in the winter.  If anything it will keep you warm.  I found wearing a wig last summer almost unbearable it was so hot

I think I'm going to break down and get a trim this weekend.  I'm starting to resemble Crusty the Clown with all the little flips around my ears.  I hate to cut it at all, but I think its time.

Thanks ladies!  I dreaded getting it cut the first time but I felt so much better after I did.  I feel like it looks like I did it on purpose now, not just random hair growth.  Thanks again for the compliments (you can never get too many huh?)

By the way Joan - I loved your video, especially the ending!

Kelly, I love how your bangs are separated with a flip!

Just got a REAL cut today at 27 wks (previously only a teeny trim & my nape neatened at 22 wks) & it's just not long enough yet to do that.  It's looking way too neat after this cut 'cause it was blown dry so I feel a real need to muss it all up!  It'll have to wait until I wash it again because I'd rather let it air dry to bring back the curl.

Still not entirely used to the gray, but I'm holding out for a few more months to decide if I want to start colouring again - I'm still on the fence, LOL!

Nkb - first noticed mine showing some wave at about 17 wks, then it was definitely curling a month later.  I'm thrilled to finally have some curl - was poker straight all my life...I'm hoping it lasts a good long while!

Well done, Joan - thanks for the chuckle!

Edited to add: kjiberty - I keep thinking that's a long ponytail on the one side of your neck in your avatar...what is it?

I've updated my pic journal if anyone wants to peek (link below)
