Honey - good luck with the thyroid issues. I hope it's something easy. Do let us know. I just had my first THS test come back w/slightly elevated numbers so I've been researching - but NOT google. Try Mayo Clinic.

I'm doing OK. I'm still trying to get back to whatever the new normal will be. Silver Sneakers exercise class twice a week. Water aerobics class 3x a week. Plus I'm trying to walk on the treadmill several times a week. Yes, I'm tired & I want to quit - but I need to give it a fair trial. It's much easier to be a couch potato & read books, especially when it's 100 degree outside.

Bosum - you're right about the bonds. You all helped me get through my cancer treatment since I didn't choose to talk about it with local friends. In addition to the non-smoking support, hearing how all of you were doing kept me putting one foot in front of the other.

    Ladies

All test came back good, I do have one , half inch nodular on my thyroid and several small ones but nothing that looked or had any appearance of cancer . All thyroid blood work was perfect. Thyroid specialist did not seem concerned and expressed to me because of my history he would watch me very closely and if at any time had any doubt he would send me to another Dr or take it out .

My Tumor markers came back down to normal so at this point we are good. I pray we stay that way .. Living one day at a time. Got another new grandson so just Living to love and Loving all I can .

Still not off the smokes but ever week I smoke fewer so I will get there . I think I have become a closet smoker.

I hope this fines you all doing well

. Lisa I think its great your are going to help your mother, I know its got to be hard leaving behind your current job and friends but taking care of your mother is the honorable thing to do . Sorry about your son, that has got to be devastating, I do hope you can find a good support group.

Minus.......10 yrs WOW, so proud for you . I was just thinking today if I had of stayed quit when I had my accident in 2006 I I would be 10 + , I could kick my own ass sometimes .

Bosum,,, Glad to see your back on here .

Honey - hot damn, I'm so glad they're not suspicious of cancer and your tumor markers are down. Congratulations girl.

Hmmmm. A closet smoker? For a long time after I started back up (one of those many times I quit & started again) I only smoked in the garage. Weird but my kitchen phone cord was long enough to reach to the garage so I'd sit on the floor & puff one after another while I talked. Glad you're noticing that you're smoking less. Your time will come.

Happy Fourth of July everyone. If Judy were still here, I would say Happy Canada Day too although it was the 1st.

I'm still have to figure out how to celebrate next week on the 11th. One week from today is the anniversary of my quit date - TEN years ago - 7/11/07. Doesn't seem possible.

Had "coffee" with a friend this morning on my front porch - only he was drinking vodka w/ice & I was drinking a coke. He lost 1/2 a lung to lung cancer and now is fighting prostate cancer. But he is still smoking. He smokes little cigars all day long. Of course his MO told him he was going to die if he didn't quit. And he told his MO, we're all going to die. I expect you've all heard my story about that. When I quit, I told everyone that the first thing I would do if I were diagnosed with a serious disease would be to buy some smokes. Whew, a back door left open. But when I was diagnosed with BC 4 years later, I totally forgot.

I bought a watermelon & gave half to a neighbor. And I boiled 3 eggs to make deviled eggs. Happy Holiday.

Proud for you on the 10 yrs, my father was a chain smoker for 30+ yrs went to the Dr one day and Dr told him if he didn't quit he was gona drop dead. He put them down that day and has never smoked one since. I wish I could find that mind set. A pack is now lasting 2- 3 days so we are doing better just not good enough .

Hoping everyone had a great holiday with family and or friends

    Huggs to you all

OK - Tomorrow's the big celebration. Looks like I'll go to my water aerobics class tonight & my Silver Sneaker's exercise class tomorrow as usual. Maybe I'll stop at Panda Express for an orange chicken.

Just read a summary & reviews of a book by Gregor Hens called Nicotine. 160 pages by Other Press. "Part memoir and part philosophical treatise on inspiration, habit, addiction and the mind ..(it).. chronicles ..(his).. life as a former smoker". I thought this Washington Post review pretty much says what we've all felt.

"The book is a slim but plaintive memoria to a lost love - a philosophical meditation on the nature of addiction, the listlessness, the frustration and sense of grief one feels at the loss of a fix...It's an honest exposition of the emotional complexity of quitting."

Just popping in to say HI. Seems that this thread has outlived it's usefulness for now. I hope all of you who are still trying to quit don't give up. It will happen when the time is right for you.

LisaMarie - I know you're getting closer to your move. I have a friend who's DS & DIL recently moved to Vegas. If I can get out there to see her next year, I'll definitely want to look you up.

And Bosum, you are often in my thoughts. Hope everything has smoothed out and life is less complicated.

Honey - Since your test results were good and the doc isn't worried about the thyroid, I sure understand staying off the boards. I'm only checking a few of my favorite threads - which are not cancer related - and not reading the others for now. I'll keep you in my thoughts as you struggle with this smoking beast.

Did you all see the article that the FDA is considering that the nicotine content in cigarettes should be reduced? The theory is that people will smoke less. From personal opinion, that will not be true. When I switched to "light" cigarettes, I smoked considerably more actual cigarettes. I imagine I was trying to make up the difference. Until I finally quit, I always smoked more with the 'lights' than the regulars.

I expect it's unlikely that the experiences of previous smokers will be considered, but was curious if any of you had an opinion.

Bosum: When my BFF died, her entire house was yellow. She'd smoked in the house for 30+ years. The smell was impossible to remove with plain paint. I was the one who had to get the house ready to sell since her son lived in Hawaii. I finally had to hire painters to cover every surface with KILZ before painting with regular paint on top.

When I quit smoking, I washed down the walls and the cabinets and had the carpet & upholstery & drapes cleaned. And you're right - yucky yellow/brown water. I also washed or dry cleaned every bit of clothing. That was a major thing that kept me from starting smoking again. Who could afford to do that twice.

I'd say you can clean the woodwork & cabinets with something like 409 and do the windows again just before you move, and don't worry about the walls. I'm sure landlords are used to repainting when someone moves, whether it's for little kids writing on the walls or people who hung a ton of pictures. If you've been there several years they know they will have to paint.

I agree about Simple Green. It really does get rid of the smoke stains - if you can handle the smell.

BosumBlues -- Don't be so hard on yourself. As you said-- every cigarette not smoked is a win!. Plus you know what it is that you need-- more coping strategies for stress. Which is quite normal for smokers because at whatever age you stated smoking -- whenever you were under stress, you reached for a cigarette -- so it is a totally normal reaction for you and for almost all smokers. It's not easy but you can do it and the next time will be longer than the last time. It's normal for smokers to quit many times before they are finally successful. Just use this as a learning experience.

VJ - so glad that you're still checking in. I have been posting less but think of you all - ALWAYS.

Walked into a bank through a covered parking lot last week and had to pass the 'smoking corner'. Got one good whif of a fresh smoke. As we've said many times - I will always be a smoker. I'm just a smoker who does not smoke.

I don't often go to movies, but was reading a review of Atomic Blonde with Charlize Theron. This sentence in the review really struck me:

"When she takes a smooth drag on a cigarette, that sound you hear rustling across the earth's surface is the collective swoon of 50 million ex-smokers."

We're part of that 50 million, or attempting to get there. Congrats if you've made it. Hang in there if you're still trying. Your time will come.
