Jen, I WANT a cigarette but I am not doing it. I guess the want never really leaves. They just become further apart. I can deal with that. I did a genomic assay test that showed I have a gene that is VERY susceptible to cig smoke, exhaust fumes, chemicals in food, etc, etc and I feel that's why I got cancer. Sucks but there it is. The test offers suggestions on how to assist the genes that are compromised to operate more efficiently so I am on that path. But the smoking thing is VERY bad for me. I am not even supposed to be around ANY second hand smoke. My husband is a musician and plays in smoky bars.
I'm trying.

Dutchy - your are in my thoughts and my prayers - may God guide their hands and bring about perfect results.
Seaside - Yeah!!! 8 months!!!! What ya going to do with all that money?
Barbara - You are doing great just keep moving forward one minute at a time!
(((HUGS))) to EVERYONE!!!!

Barbara,
I know even after 8 months, I have my times when I really think I could go for a cigarette but, I do know that, at least from everything I have read and heard, it will NOT be the same as what I remembered! There are certain times that are more difficult than others. I have heard from others further out that it does eventually go away.
What was the assay that you had done? What were the suggestions that they offered?
Just remember, what is in the past is in the past and no one really knows what causes our bodies to mutiny. Can't change the past so DO NOT waste energy worrying about it! All we control is what we do from here on out!
As a fellow sister from these boards has as her signature...
"Until the time when someone comes up with a definitive "cure", we each have to cobble together what we believe will be the most effective treatment that we can live with, not merely survive."
What we can live with is a very individual thing and we EACH need to find what we are and are not willing to do!
Sending hugs and strength to you!

O2B,
Great to hear from you!
Most of the money has already been spent ...
We took a vacation to the beach (my favorite place on earth) in August. It was booked after I stopped smoking but, with confidence that I would be able to keep it up. Glad I was able to do it and our vacation was pretty much paid for.
One other thing. Cigarettes increased by $1.60 in price here in NY in July (I think). So they now are approaching $10.00 a pack. I DID change the price of a pack on my quit meter to reflect the increase so hopefully I will start really racking up my new savings now. My husband is crying foul! But my take is that's what it would cost if I was smoking now .
Hope all is well with you!

WOW that is a amazing!!!! Jennifer to have 8 months no smoking and to have saved $2000 you have every right to be proud. I am real busy tonight trying to get some things together and I will answer all of you tomorrow. My thoughts are with all of you. I will be shopping tomorrow for Spanx, night clothes and what ever else I have on the list for tomorrow. Evelyn

Crap, $10?? that's about twice what they are here in Alabama. I always bought by the carton until I was trying to quit. Then I started buying by the pack and seems like it was about $5 a pack. For some reason, that seemed to hurt my wallet worse than paying for a whole carton.
It's so nice that I don't have to worry about smoking. I feel pretty icky today, 3 days post treatment. Just tired and nauseous. I can stay in bed all day and not have to get up once an hour to smoke Hang in there Dutchy and way to go Barbara!

Hi everyone, I will be joining all you Non smokers (or trying to be non smokers) as soon as this pack is finished. Looking forward to the support.

Welcome Kristy!
Feel better soon LadyinBama...
(((Dutchy)))
Wow Seaside! I thought my smokes were high at $7 a pack last year...I am glad you got to enjoy your vacation at the beach!

Bama - just take it easy today and you'll pick up. Welcome Kristy. It's hard but you can do it. Dutchy, we'll be praying for you! Jen, have a great weekend. It's my mom's 80th b-day tomorrow and her deceased sister's kids are coming from TX for a surprise visit. I got tickets to the Tampa Bay Rays game and the concert afterward features Adam Lambert. That will be a hoot to watch my mother watch him.

LadyInBama,
Yeah, NY has kind of decided that they can balance our very "out of balance" budget on the backs of the smokers. I think roughly half of the cost of cigarettes here is tax!
I did the same as you. I quit buying the cartons and started going pack by pack before I quit. You are right in that it seems like it hits you in the pocket-book so much harder when you realize you are spending that money every day! Also, the general hassle of having to go buy cigarettes, in my case daily, got old quick!
Sending you very gentle hugs! I am so sorry that you are not feeling well! Hoping that the next few days have you feeling better!

Barbara,
Happy Birthday to your Mom! I'm sure she will enjoy the game! Hey, just noticed you're in the Tampa Bay area. My parents are snowbirds and spend half the year just south of Venice. Beautiful area!
I think it will be fun watching the concert through your mother's eyes! I just saw that he is having some legal issues from an altercation with a photographer. Hopefully that doesn't affect his show! Adam Lambert was really good on Idol and I thought for sure he would win.
Have a GREAT week-end!

O2B,
We had a WONDERFUL time at the beach! It had been 5 years since we had gone due to life intervening with one reason or another each of those years.
Last year my treatment prevented us from going so we were determined that this year we would go and we booked back in March. Then our dog became ill and we were prepared to cancel. She went down hill very quickly and we had her put to sleep about a month before we left. It was (and still is) heartbreaking but, this vacation was a time of healing for the whole family. Healing from her death as well as what we ALL went through last year!
Hope your weekend is a good one!

LadyinBama, Sorry you are not feeling well and I send you bunches of (((((hugs))))). You just stay in that bed and that is wonderful that you do not have to get out of bed for cigarettes. If you are like me you might have to pee alot and that can be a pain.
Welcome to our newcomers. These are some wonderful ladies here on this thread and Seaside and Oh2bhealthy have been here for a long time and have really helped me out. Saw me go through a couple of quits and remained non-judgemental. Lots of great support and help on what they did and what worked.
I went shopping today and bought pajamas with zippers and buttons as I did not have any cause all I wear is leggins and tee shirts to bed. Bought a comfortable pair of shoes as they say to bring a pair of tennis shoes and mine were pretty worn from my hiking. Getting all of the laundry done. Need to go grocery shopping and stock up on foods. I know I should cook ahead of time but just am not into it. I am excited but very anxious. I decided against the Spanx as they were hell to get on without the surgery and I can not imagzine putting them on after the surgery...just too difficult. Well you ladies enjoy your fresh air and have a wonderful weekend.

Dutchy,
Happy last day of work for a bit! I do remember what it was like when I was working trying to get my work taken care of for just a week's vacation. Can't even imagine what you have had to do to clear your slate for the next few weeks. Hopefully they didn't run you too ragged! Now you can spend the next few days getting yourself ready for Tuesday.
Hope you got all of your shopping done (or if not done, at least started).
Edited to add: We must have been posting at the same time! I'm thinking I may have to get some spanx because I have a dinner to go to next week and am not sure I will fit into my dress . Sorry to hear that they are what seems to be a fancy name for girdle...lol
Kody22 and Anne068, How are you both doing? Good I Hope!
Good-Night all!

Dutchy,
Not sure if you are going to have the time to check in before your surgery on Tuesday but, just wanted to let you know that I will be thinking about you ALL DAY and knowing that all will work out OK! I know you are probably a bit nervous (as anyone would be) but you have a fabulous surgeon and I just know the results will be all that you have hoped for and MORE!
Just know that people are praying for and thinking of you!
Wishing you the BEST possible outcome!
Very big and very gentle hugs, my friend!

It is finally starting to feel like it is real and the DIEP is finally going to be done. I have done all I can do and now it is up to Dr. Festekjian and his team. I am no longer feeling anxious and just feeling excited. My son and my housemates will be here to take care of me when I get home and could not ask for a better bunch of people to live with. I have my recliner ready with my table of medications, creams, water and snacks. I will set up the television tomorrow and clean the house. Maybe wash my car. I am going to try to keep busy so I do not get anxious. I want to thank all of you for the support and love that I feel from all of you.
It is so weird that I am not having cravings at all and they are not even a quick thought in my mind. I only hope that helps you beginners to know that they do subside and it has been only 5 weeks or so.
Not sure if I will have the opportunity to check in tomorrow but I will try.

Dutchy,
So glad you checked in tonight! Sounds like you have everything in order and I am REALLY glad to hear that you will have help at home!
Check in when you can but, rest assured, that we understand that you have more pressing matters right now!
Glad to hear that the excitement has kicked in!
Hope to hear from you, if not before your surgery, then when you are able after to let us know you are all right!

Hi ladies, I'm doing good. Started feeling better Saturday and today I'm back to normal (as normal as I get). I'm lucky, so far, that my SEs aren't too bad and have lasted only 3 to 4 days so far.
Dutchy: Hugs and prayers.
Everybody hang in there and remember, a cigarette doesn't solve anything! It just adds another layer of problems to the ones we have.

Seaside, actually, the Rays did win on an Angels error in the 10th inning. Adam was great. Mom ran out of gas and didn't stay for the concert. She was really surprised by my cousins' visiting.
Dutchy, so excited for you. Glad you're feeling better Bama!

My computer wireless box is down otherwise I would have posted sooner. Thankfully I have a blackberry but I am slow on typing. I should know in a little bit what time I go in.

OOOPPSS!!
Sorry about that mistake Barbara! NOT sure what the heck I was looking at but, obviously sports isn't my area of expertise...lol!
My husband and son are avid sports fans and would be mortified to hear of my error! Good thing they never will!

Dutchy,
Sorry that you are having computer issues, especially today! I hope THAT all clears up soon!
If you can, let us know what time you will be going in. That way I can make sure to pray for you at that time! If not, know that I will be thinking of you all day!
I'm not sure if you've already said but, if it's not too personal, how long will you be in the hospital?
I can't believe your day is finally here! It seems like just yesterday we first 'met' and you were preparing for this day but it was way back in March!! Where did all of THAT time go!??!
You have waited SO long and I am SO happy for you!
Sending wishes for a SPEEDY recovery for you!

Just found out my surgery is at 7 30 and check in is 5. I am so excited.

Dutchy,
Thanks for letting us know the times!
I'm thinking those times are in the AM. Ouch! But at least you won't be sitting around worrying half the day! When I had my surgery it was not scheduled until 3:30 in the afternoon. That waiting sure did suck!
You are 3 hours behind us here in NY so will be thinking of you around 10:30 our time!
Hugs to you.!!!!!!!!! Hope you can get a few hours of sleep tonight given the excitement and all!
You are in my thoughts and prayers!
