OK Dutchy,
Looks like we were posting at the same time... Great minds think alike
Sooooooo.... How are things going? You still doing OK?
Seems like you gave those old doctors a bit of a scare during your hospital stay!! Have things been going OK since you've been home?
Hope all is well, my friend! Been trying not to bug ya too much because I know you're busy resting and trying to heal!! Know that I AM thinking of you though and hoping for a speedy and complication free recovery for you!

Hi
Yes, it's been 2 weeks for me - cravings every now and then but not too too bad.
I hope everyone is healing well - I still have a bruising issue with one incision but I go back to the PS tomorrow and I'm hoping to get at lease 2 more drains out. I have 3 left and one is still collecting blood from a hematoma I had after surgery.
I'm beginning to feel a little stronger and had a trip outside the house yesterday with DH. We went food shopping and all I did was walk up and down the aisles and point...loved it! He's a great shopper anyway.
I hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Seaside, I am doing great since I got home. I am going to see if my family physcian will pull my last 2 drains as going to UCLA is a bit of a drive. I hope he will do or I will have to go out to UCLA on Wednesday when I have been told I can drive again. It is amazing how I am not craving cigarettes. I sometimes have slight moments of a craving but they go away quickly. I do not go outside where the smokers are and I think that has been a great help. Gotta go now. I will write later. Evelyn

Just got a drain pulled and one left to go. Yeah oh happy day.

YAY! One drain down is better than no drains out. Congrats on your quitting! You can do it one day at a time, I have my moments, especially Saturday. I walked the Race for the Cure in St Pete then my dad died right after that. It was expected but still hard nonethless. I made it through without smoking, though.

Dutchy,
Glad to hear that you are down to that LAST drain!!! I'm sure you won't be sad to see that one go! I think it is so amazing how fast you have healed from your surgery and that they will be lifting your driving restrictions on Wednesday!! That is absolutely astounding!
I think it is a very smart move to kind of "avoid temptation" at least in your early stages! Both my brother and sister-in-law smoke and, even though, today, someone smoking doesn't bother me, I did lay low for a bit until I felt confident that I could handle it.
SO glad to hear that things are going not just well but AMAZINGLY WELL!!

Jan,
Hope that tomorrow you ditch those two drains and that the third one isn't too far behind!!
I am glad to hear that you were able to get out of the house to grocery shop!! It's funny how things that we always took for granted are now such a treat but, I remember feeling the SAME way after surgery and mine wasn't anywhere as extensive as yours! Glad your husband is a helpful one! Mine is too, but not everyone is as lucky!
Hope you have a great night! You should be very proud of how well you are doing!

I'm good. Got my Quit net email this morning and it said 55 days and $196 saved. I'm glad everybody seems to be hanging in there. Barbara, glad you haven't smoked. My first husband's death 8 years ago was my "excuse" for starting back smoking. I know now that smoking doesn't help a darn thing! Just gives you one more problem to have to work on later.

Thanks, Bama. I got really po'd at my ex-DH and started smoking to make him mad. Boy was that stupid.

Ladies - I am back once again! Hopefully this time I can stay clean and sober!
I started my chantix yesterday - had 3 smokes all together between then and now. I was told to stay on the chantix for 5 days before trying to quit. Already with just 3 pills - smokes don't taste as great as they did before.
I so wanted to bounce back into this thread a couple of months ago but I was going to the 2nd TaTas Sisterhood reunion in Vegas and I knew darn well I would cheat since it wouldn't be long enough and hitting those casinos drinking and gambling - well I just wouldn't have the will power.
So we all got back on Monday (all 56 of us) and now it is time to try to quit again. So ya'll will see me here every day looking for encouragement from others that have or are quitting - love to hear the success stories! I will be here to encourage those that are trying. I have smoked for 30 years and tried to quit at least 12 times so I know how hard this addiction is.

Dutchy and Seaside - I remember both of ya'll from months and months ago - back in April or May when I last tried to quit. I did make it to day 20 and then blew it after having a major blowout with my dh. This time if he ticks me off that bad I will reach for a valium instead of a smoke!
I am so glad the two of you are still active in this thread!

Jancie-PLEASE try auricular stimulation. It so TOTALLY worked for me, a die-hard, stone-cold, LOVE-IT smoker. You do the tx and walk out with out the addiction. For me that was the hardest...brain fog, wanting to kill the next person I saw for a cig. It truly works and I STILL love smoking. It has been 4 months and 4 days and I am good. I could deal with the cravings around being in a bar, having a cup of coffee, etc but not the addiction. I have a job and the brain has to work.

Jancie:
Welcome back! I started checking this thread prior to my surgery on 9/20. I tried to quit and once I was dx on 8/6 I stopped buying cigarettes. I was smoking my DH smokes and was limiting myself to about 4-5 a day.
Once I had my surgery I did not smoke and haven't had one since 9/20. Its starting to be a challenge because I now am starting to feel better but I don't want to 'start all over again' so I'm trying as hard as I can. I figure I don't have any of the chemicals or nicotine in my body anymore so I'm clean and will do whatever it takes to stay that way. That's my story and I know it's hard. I smoked for 45 years and never quit before (well, maybe once for 3 weeks).
We will be here to help you through his and I'm sure this time you will be successful!!!
Best of luck

barbaraA - what is aricular stimulation? I have never heard of it.
Oh and I still LOVE smoking so how do you get through the craziness of it all? When you get stressed and want to reach for a smoke - then what? When I quit for those 20 days, I would walk by someone who was smoking and I would enhale to get that 2nd hand smoke because I LOVE IT.

Jancie, welcome back. You have been missed.

Jancie!!
Welcome back, girl!!! Glad you have stopped back in!
You are so right in that the timing needs to be right for you. Quitting right before the TaTa reunion probably wouldn't have worked. BUT your are here NOW and I hope that this is THE one for you!
I have been reading the TaTa's thread and sounds like all of you had a BLAST!
Hopefully Barbara will be along soon to share more on the auricular stimulation. It sounds very promising!
Hope to hear more from you soon!!
Jennifer
PS: I think you may be selling yourself a bit short because, I think you made it farther than 20 days last time (although I could be wrong)! Here's hoping that this time is THE one!!!!

Dutchy,
Are you still doing (feeling) OK?
Today was your first day off of driving restriction. Did you go anywhere?
Hope your healing has continued to go VERY well!!

Jancie, the auricular stimulation freed me from nicotine addiction. I still walk into bars and inhale deeply and LOVE it. But it annoys me eventually. You can do it, trust me. I really love smoking and if I ever get mets, trust me, I am smoking my brains out,

Jan508,
Did those drains come out yesterday?
You are right in that the physical need to smoke has now passed! It is the mental need that remains.
That is still a very real hurdle to overcome! BUT, as time goes by, each and everytime that you encounter a situation where you used to smoke and you DO NOT, the connection between that activity and smoking becomes less ingrained in our minds until it is finally broken.
It takes time and, quite frankly, I still have my times when I want to smoke but it HAS gotten so much easier!
You are doing SO WELL!!!
Keep it UP!!

Barbara,
LOL... I am right there with you in that if I do wind up with mets that I will be doing EVERYTHING that I enjoy even if it's not good for me. If that includes smoking then so be it!!
One could make the argument that this is how we should be living our lives regardless of our diagnosis but, I do believe that quitting was the right thing for me based on where I am today.
I am coming into my 1 year post-treatment mammo/US/MRI so the scenario that it may be back is in the front of my mind at this point. I really don't think I'm going to like this every 6 months!
Guess that's my new normal but I just wish my new normal involved lots of wine and all the chocolate I want!

Bama,
Glad to hear that you are doing well! You are coming up on 2 MONTHS and almost $200 saved! You should be very proud of your accomplishment! Keep it UP!!
And you are SO right! Smoking won't solve any of our problems but it WILL give you one more problem to have to deal with!
I keep telling myself when it gets a little dicey (which it does on occasion) that it took me over 30 years to dig myself into this hole and it will take some time to climb out of it. But each day that I do not smoke brings me one step closer to the top!
Hang in there!
