I have two Dr appts in La Crosse this week. Audiology and mammogram. Will probably quarantine for a while after that, just to make sure. Went to the grocery store, got a chicken, cranberries, and sweet potatoes for my solo Thanksgiving dinner. I don't know if my scooter would be able to manage the trip given weather moving in later this week. Given the numbers in this area, a taxi would not be advisable.

I'm back from the dentist until I return for a small filling where the ancient silver needs replacing. Tech had a N95 mask and a facial shield. Everyone in the office wore a mask. Made an appt for the filling in Dec., came home and realized it was the exact day and time as the ONLY other appt I have in Dec. They laughed when I needed to change it.

When I was in elementary school we didn't have a cafeteria, so we had to go home for lunch. My mother was a huge Jeopardy fan, and it was on at noon, so we'd watch Art Fleming host the original Jeopardy (I think the category dollar amounts started at $10?) For years, the Jeopardy theme would make me think of egg salad sandwiches.

Pingpong, love the memory association of Jeopardy music with egg sandwiches! Funny.

Count me in as being a Jeopardy lover. I watched the show for yrs. I go in streaks of being able to get a huge amt. correct to almost none. I attribute it mainly to age and having been around long enough to 'hear' about more things. Plus, though I haven't had time for some time, a lot of reading and sites on the Internet for info if I don't get around to finding a book on the subject I'm interested in at the time.

Looking a bit gloomy today but hpefully no rain. Yesterday I was buswier than a one-armed paper hanger so today will feel like nothing going on although there are things. I need to pay bills and make an appt. with my Urologist to find out what the Barnes/St. Louis University complex lab had to say about my recent upset -- cancer/not cancer snafu. All in a day's work so to speak. I don't feel anxious at the moment but will be glad to hear their( Barnes ) idea of where I am. If they recommend chemo I likely will do it.

Hope you are all going to have a super nice day. I am warmed that we are finally getting a transition and can hopefully start to feel some comfort and certainly great efforts toward getting this covid issue addressed properly.

It was on the news yesterday that Ken Jennings will be the "temporary host" when they start taping the next Jeopardy episodes. Doesn't surprise me. I expect if he's well received he'll become the permanent host.

I can't imagine anyone other than Jennings with the knowledge, poise (sans snark), and affable personality as successor-host. Trouble is, he's Seattle-based so would have to travel to tape the shows (five a day, four-week blocks). Brad Rutter is also a big winner (won one of the mega-tournaments), now an actor, and L.A.-based.

Icky, chilly, raw out there. Lakefront didn't get any snow. Bob & the kids are willing to come indoors, sitting far apart and masked, in the back of the house (conversation is possible between kitchen, den & dining room), where we can open the screened windows (& door) wide for fresh air ventilation.

BTW, Don Pardo was the announcer who quizzed teenage me and gave me that $2 bill back in 1965!

Looking back, I certainly can't say, as my chronically depressed dad once did when he was my age, that "life has passed me by." In fact, it seems to have "stopped over" quite often. I can definitely say that I've led a lucky life (kinahurrah)--long-term love, a wonderful son, comfortable income for all but the first 12 years of marriage, two careers (law & music), and much more than my allotted "15 minutes of fame:" besides Jeopardy, on Oprah twice, a Dr. Demento "hit," met several celebrities (and two presidents), done dozens of in-studio radio performances, festivals and concerts (and attended multiples of those as an audience member), traveled to almost all states and three continents, had mostly good health, wonderful friends and small but loving family, and the pleasure of the company of a total of six cats (and hopefully counting). And of course, you terrific BCO sisters (and a brother or two)!

Hi, Ladies. I haven't been on for a couple of days. It was a beautiful day. I went down to the beach with BFF. We each brought a lunch and people watched. People were spread apart other than mothers with small children. It was pleasant. The temperature was about 73.

My sister will be coming by today to pick up her birthday present, my rhumba. I seldom used it and decided to give it to her. She has mostly wooden floors so it should work better for her. I have mostly carpet.

Today I'll mix up a dough and roll out thin dumplings for tomorrow night's meal, Chicken and Dumplings. The dumplings are similar to homemade noodles. My mother was from Mississippi and she made this dish for our family. It was a big favorite and will be a treat.

I'm happy not to be "on the road" this Thanksgiving holiday.

Our governor has put Louisiana back in Phase Two because of rising Covid cases.

Carole, the chicken and dumplings sounds fantastic. I made that but roll out lots of noodles, heavily floured, then dry them all. What I don't use I then put in freezer bags so I can have home made noodles any time I get an urge. I try not to get it too often though.

Hope your sister likes her birthday present. I have no carpet either. Too many animals and fur to get caught up in carpet.

Doing another double duty day -- so will get to skip the one job on Friday and only one to do. So, I'll be tired today, but the rest of the week will be fine.

My kids loved chicken and dumplings so much I had to double the recipe. I didn't roll them, just put them in by the spoonful. DD was caring for Mom when she was in hospice care and she made them for my uncle. He was in rapture. Mom had been using canned biscuits for a while and he didn't like those dumplings at all.

I remember "dumplings" more like Wren does. Globs of dough dumped on top of a stew of any kind of meat and then baked until the dough was cooked. Was thinking about that the other day.

I'll play golf tomorrow and then come home and make dressing and scolloped corn just like Aunt Mildred did. Cranberries are already cooling. Larry and Debbie are bringing hor'dorves (even spell check isn't figuring that out so hope you can) and dessert. He said a spice cake. They are our bubble buddies. All our kids are states away but we have each other and are grateful.

Food bank has been swamped. Those pictures you see on TV are very real. Sun City posse volunteered to be traffic directors but surrounding merchants weren't happy with us. I think we had enough turkeys though, thanks to many generous supporters.

Today the roofers showed up at 7:40 and worked straight through until it was almost 5 and dark. Found my back porch needed all new plywood, the front porch area where I had a leak - wood rot was more extensive than anticipated (shiplap), and there was some wood damage near the chiminey, it also got replaced. So very glad to have it done and know we're good for another 25 years. And it's raining now.

Tomorrow, it seems, should be warmer but also with some rain. We're going to my nieces for dinner. My sister is sick, 101 fever, and has an appointment tomorrow for COVID test. We're hoping she has the flu. How bad is that, wishing it's flu. Our gathering just got smaller.

Wishing you all a very enjoyable Thanksgiving. Alone or among family, I hope your day goes well.

My Mother never made dumplings, per se. She used Bisquick and dropped the "dough" in spoonfuls into the "stew" until they cooked. I love spaetzle but have never tried to make them from scratch.

Wishing everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

We had Gordy & Leslie over for (masked & distanced) outdoor drinks & dessert. At first, we were on the deck, but then the rain started back up (that's what you'll be getting tomorrow, Cindy) so we moved through the gangway to the covered but still open front porch. Somehow, when you're with the ones you love, it's warmer than the thermometer says.

Just Bob & me tomorrow--picking up a turkey dinner from Cellars, its "last hurrah," as they put it, till spring 2021. I hope their GoFundMe page stays up through the winter so they can come roaring back. They said something cryptic earlier about New Year's Eve: maybe a pop-up "to go" or even outdoor champagne toast. Speaking of such potent potables, Michelin 3-star restaurant Everest, which had planned to make NYE its own swan song (chef Joho wanted to retire anyway and go back to hunting & fishing), is instead selling its entire wine cellar for half-price.

I did get my mani-pedi today. Hopefully, they will continue to stay open, and my back is in better shape in two weeks for my next appt.

Found out today that the Bar Show will be doing a holiday-themed online ensemble number. So back to setting up the ring light & phone holder--rehearsals start 12/2. The "Doctor, Doctor" parody is online--I'm in the Zoom chorus, in one of my signature leopard print tops & scarf, channeling my jr. high baton twirler self but with a cane instead.

The soul grows into lovely habits as easily as into ugly ones, and the moment a life begins to blossom into beautiful words and deeds, that moment a new standard of conduct is established, and your eager neighbors look to you for a continuous manifestation of the good cheer, the sympathy, the ready wit, the comradeship, or the inspiration, you once showed yourself capable of. Bear figs for a season or two, and the world outside the orchard is very unwilling you should bear thistles. -Kate Douglas Wiggin

In fear of covid shutting down hair salons again, on Tuesday evening I ran to our mall for a hair cut. I had an appt on the books for 12/9 with my latest stylist, but it could close. Fear of a bad cut was along side fear of covid. Much to my relief I received a great shampoo, cut & style. It was a Paul Mitchell salon and the price was $18 less than my last stylist.

Sandy - No pedicure yet for me. My my regular place is small, always crowded. Mall has 1 or 2 but they scare me. Toes will have to wait. Glad you were able to enjoy your visit with Gordy & Leslie.

It is raining! But knowing we'll get a great meal & conversation later today, it can't put a damper on the day. Happy Thanksgiving!

My nail salon is keeping strict precautions--spacing out appointments so that there are no more than 3 clients, 3 techs, and the receptionist at any given time. No waiting indoors--either for service or for rides home. Not keeping my mani-pedi appt. was not an option, because I needed my ingrown toenails done (and the salon owner does a better job--albeit sans adequate topical anesthesia--than my podiatrist, who practices at a "hot spot" hospital and, I understand, may be retiring).

Happy T-day, as we sit down to our "pre-leftovers" (our meal for 2-3 will likely provide food for the next few days).

Our turkey-less roll with dressing was pretty good with the gravy. DH cooked vegetables underneath the roll. He bought a pumpkin chiffon pie that was excellent. We had a family zoom call and one great niece was at a dinner for 11 people including children from 3 households. She works as a lunch lady at a school and also at Target. I just kept wondering how many people will get Covid after that little gathering. I certainly would not go near that. We're not even seeing DD who lives close because there are positive cases at her job.

I'm thinking about decorating for Christmas pretty soon. I usually don't want to do it at all, but right now having lights seems like a great idea. We'll be having it alone, I'm pretty sure.

I hope all of us have a nice and safe Thanksgiving.

Not gonna do lights--except maybe battery-operated ones on the arborvitae cedar out front (gets taller every year) and intertwined with fake pine garlands on the outside banisters. And, of course, the electric menorah in the front room window. When our HK comes back on Mon. we will wrestle the pre-strung artificial tree out of the basement. A little festivity is vital these days, even if the only way anyone else will see it is online.

Pause then at this thanksgiving season and give thanks for the miracle of selfhood. Give thanks for yourself, for your health and strength and energy. Ponder the miracle of your body, which, without your conscious thought, controls heartbeat and respiration, digests food, compounds chemicals, renews cells, combats disease, heals wounds, and maintains equilibrium among its huge and intricate array of separate parts.

We had a wonderful, fairly restful day. I was able to get a lot done while the roast cooked on top the stove. Later, after we ate I fixed a nice-sized plate up for the friend in Sandoval and took it over. I went in the morning and had to go in the evening anyway. I knew other neighbors would bring her food, but she seemed so ' taken ' with roast that I felt she would like to share it. She seems to think I'm an ok cook, so it was a very easy decision.

Will be okay today. I hope the sun will stay out, but it will only get to the upper 50's. Par for this time of yr. actually. We are fortunate not to have had snow which has happened. It was sort of lonely in one way, but then we are used to it since I've always ( the last few yrs. for sure ) worked all holidays and Dh who worked at Sears always had to work right up to the day -- so it was easier for us than most people. Nice to be able to feel such hope that we will get out from under this now with someone who truly cares.

Hope you all have a really good Friday.
