Can we have a forum for "older" people with bc?

illinoislady, yes, today is going great too! I took my car to the dealership where I have gone since I purchased the car. I have come to know the service advisor quite well over the years. She asked me how I was doing, and I told her about being diagnosed again. She told me I am really not due for the oil change and tire rotation yet and said it would be fine to wait to get that done in the spring when I come in for inspection. I really appreciated that! They checked out my window that wouldn't go back up easily, and all they needed to do was reset it. No charge! They still checked out all the vehicle's systems but I didn't owe them a thing! That is why I drive the distance! They have always treated me this way!
I am going to get out a few fall decorations. This is my favorite time of year and since I will be home for much of it, no reason not to be a little festive!
Continue to think of all in hurricanes path!

I’m still putting things away, donating more which entails more washing. I’m trying not to just stuff items back in the rooms. Thoughtful curation.
My step son, his wife and 2 small boys are in Orlando too. They were staying until 10/2 but changed their flight to early tomorrow morning. Hoping they get out of Orlando. A little while ago I heard Tampa airport is closing at 5 today. Fort Myers airport is closed for all Wednesday flights.
My home in Fort Myers is as safe as it can be. We all hope for the best. Neighbors who live there full time are sending videos. It’s gray and windy but still a ways off. I had the weather channel on this morning and had to turn it off. It can consume me.
I’ve even got Halloween and Christmas gifts tucked around the house. Usually they were in the side bedroom and will make their way back upstairs soon. Soon!

Cindy, at least you heard from your step son. I haven’t heard from my DD since they arrived at their hotel on Saturday. They are staying at Disney’s Jungle Kingdom resort. I can’t listen to weather channel long either as I start thinking crazy thoughts like “what if the hurricane causes animals to escape?” I went on Disney’s website for hurricane and so far they are still open. Some resorts will close tonight or tomorrow, those near river/water. Everyone I talk with said Disney is built for hurricanes and not to worry. Disney stated in the website that if the park closes they send Characters to the hotel resorts and play games with children and do Meet & Greets. Talk about employee dedication! They said saf for staff and guests is top priority. I wish they planned to come home early too, but my DD and SIL are adventurous. Before they had kids they traveled a lot, and did things like hiking on the glaciers in Patagonia. I am the opposite.

cindy, I just saw that Disney is closing Wed and Thurs. I texted my DD, but not sure when I will hear from her. I hope they stay as I would rather them stay than get stranded at the airport and knowing them, they wouldn't have even looked into flights at this point.
Crossing fingers you step son and family and my DD and family are safe with whatever they end up doing.

Cindy, It looks like it has shifted to come in closer to your Florida home. I also heard that Disney was closing.

mavericksmom, many years ago we rode out a hurricane, don't remember which one, at the Carribean beach resort in Disneyworld. I remember they closed all the parks in the afternoon to lock everything down. We were one of the last people out of the Magic Kingdom and we got to see a crane remove the top parts of the castle. We were told they would be stored underground until the winds died down. it was pretty remarkable. I also remember waking up in the middle of the night and seeing palm trees bent over from the wind and driving rain, but didn't hear or feel anything in the room. All of the animals are brought to their buildings. DW is very well prepared for weather events.
I hope you hear from your family soon and that they, and others who live in or have family in Florida, are safe. I have a brother and many other family members who live in the Orlando area so I'm watching things closely as well.

I did hear from DD tonight. They are staying at the resort and as long as they can get plane tickets, they may stay a day longer as the resort said they had room. They were able to experience a lot between Saturday to today, and Disney is well prepared for the storm. I felt better after hearing from them. Honestly, for all they did in the past three-four days, I have a feeling they won't mind chilling out for a couple of days, as long as they are safe and have food and water. They certainly are making memories!

Storm looks terrible. Hoping everyone can stay safe. I'm certain Disney has emergency generators. I think my biggest fear is living in the dark. Sending warm thoughts to all who are worrying and hunkering down.

Maverick, I'm so glad you heard from your daughter. I do think most places like amusement parks, would have strigent safety codes they have to abide by with updating as needed. They cater to so many people, elderly, young kids, handicapped etc. who may have disabilities or other issues, so I'd think a real must do on keeping people safe and secure. You are right -- they need to stay put because it would be safer all way around now.
Hopefully everyone will be okay and Biden already released funds and help for the moment it is needed. That is a comforting thought.

MavricksMom - I am having lots of anxiety because I don't have 2023 calendars yet. So no, you are not crazy. I couldn't do w/o the one hanging in my kitchen. Not only for birthday and anniversaries of deaths - but I need to start making doc appointments in 2023. So if you are crazy - so am I. My calendars from past years are my diaries.
Fingers crossed for all of you in Florida. Been there, done that in Houston so I do understand.

minustwo, I keep my calendars. They are mini diaries.
mavericksmom, I am glad you heard from them.
Cindy, looks bad down there - prayers

If you're wondering when you should give to or serve someone else,
I believe in doing it spontaneously, perhaps in a shared moment of
emotion. Or any time you feel like someone needs your support.
Whether you do it all the time, occasionally, or when the opportunity
arises, just do it. Reach out and give of yourself and your time.
I have seen, time and again, that happiness and enjoyment arise from
being of service in simple ways.

misustwo and petite1, I am so glad I am not alone with my love of calendars! I never thought of them as diaries, but you are right, they are! I have twenty years plus of them and I can't tell you how many times I got information I wouldn't have been able to find anywhere else, from them! My husband and I do mark all of our doctor and medical tests on it. They really don't take up much space but have a wealth of information!
I found out that a co-worker I work with tested positive for Covid yesterday. Thankfully my school was closed Monday and Tues for the Jewish Holiday, so I didn't even have contact with her since Friday. I wear a KN95 mask at work and whenever I go inside a store. So far I have managed not to get it, but I am more nervous now with my upcoming surgery.
My daughter and family are fine, hunkered down at Disney World. The substitute who was in for the "covid +" teacher is a retired teacher who worked in our building. Her 80 yr old mother is alone, in a single-story home, near Tampa. I feel so sorry for her because her mother doesn't have other relatives nearby. Her neighbors did help her put up her hurricane shutters thought. And to think I was worried about my daughter and family at a DW resort that is well prepared and well-staffed! Certainly puts things in perspective!
Thinking of all in hurricane's path!

Just stopping by to say good morning and to have a great day. Hope the gals in FL are not in harms way. The storm looks awful.

As my grand niece would say, it is too much for me to wrap my head around.

No one is happy or free who lives only for him or herself. Joy in living comes from immersion in something one recognizes to be bigger, better, worthier, more enduring than his or her own self. True happiness and true freedom come from squandering one's self for a purpose. -Carl W. McGeehon

Just devastating there in Fla. Still I'm praying for resilence for those who must go on. Hugs and hope and so glad that Pres. Biden stepped in ahead of time to clear a path for whatever Fla. needs.

EXEMSTANE-- Have been paying almost nothing under my insurance, but moving to Medicare in November. It looks like it might be Tier 4/ expensive on my United Health AARP Walgreens Part D plan-- who takes it and has a better/cheaper Part D plan??? thanks! Also an Illinois transplant to Florida- we are 1 hour north of Tampa and were prepared but really, really dodged a bullet.

aviva5675: I am on exemestane and also have private prescription coverage beyond Medicare. Prior to being on Medicare, I paid nothing for it and now I am socked with a steep charge ~$50, every 90 days which I am willing to pay to stay safe. Cost I did not expect since it was covered by my prescription plan before and when the pharmacy first told me what the charge would be I was shocked. I asked them to check what I had previously paid and it was nothing. Looked into other ways for coverage but none were less than what I pay. Fortunately I will end use in June of 2023.

Fort Myers beach is devastated. I could cry looking at pictures. My beautiful little down town Fort Myers on the Caloosahatchee River has been flooded beyond my wildest dreams. My neighbors are without power and without cell service. You can try to call and randomly get through, but I've yet to speak to anyone there. Others have posted, at least 4, say they need new roofs. Based on information, texts from Fort Myers to Colorado to me in NY, anyone with original roofs will need new ones. I'd fall into that category. Our roof is original, 17 years old. I'm hoping to hear from someone, so I can make plans to go down and start an insurance claim if necessary. Overwhelming. Picture unfortunately popped up in the middle of text and I don't know how to fix it.
PS - I got a 2023 calendar in August and it’s filled w birthdays and anniversaries as well as my next year doctor appointments. I even have old “Day Timers” from when I worked. I’ve retired 8 years ago. Definitely a diary of life events

Thankful that my former co-worker's mom is ok, so far. I didn't want to worry my coworker more than she already is, but I hope her mom can make it through the next week or month! She is fine now, her home is fine, fence down, and some trees but nothing serious, however, no power which is going to pose a whole new set of issues for her. She spent last night in a closet with her dog! My heart just breaks for her and those who lost so much in this storm! Sadly, this won't be the worst hurricane for long!
My sister's condo in Naples is ok too. DS and BIL are safe in PA. Things can be replaced but people can't be!
I think when my DD and family are ready to head home on Sunday, providing the planes are able to fly again from Orlando, they will be shocked by what areas outside of Disney look like. They are fine, enjoying their stay at Animal Kingdom Resort and making new friends.
Weeks ago, I was consumed by my third Dx of breast cancer, but now I just feel sad for those who lost so much in Florida! I always said, when things seem bad, two things are true: 1.Things could always be worse! 2. There are millions of people who have it worse! Adds perspective.

Cindy, heartsick about what has happened to Ft. Myers & Naples. And those poor people stranded on Sanibel now that the causeway was destroyed--only choppers and the "Cajun Navy" volunteer boat-owning rescuers can get them out o the mainland. Downtown Orlando was awash--but the Disney resorts & parks are far out of town--and since they're inland, no storm surge. Misty, Petite, Special, Spookiesmom and all our other FL sisters--hope you can come out the other side of this and weigh in here once you get your power & cell signal back. When Wilma hit the SE FL tri-county area, my mom (z'l) was without power for a week. Fortunately, she had a wind-up radio, plenty of batteries for flashlights, and a couple of huge oxygen tanks to tide her over while she couldn't use her concentrator. Because her section of the compound was on the same grid as the hospital, their power was restored first. But as bad as Wilma was, she was nothing compared to Ian.
Had my DEXAscan yesterday--first one since Mar. 2020--and I am now officially osteoporotic. No surprise, as I was on letrozole for over 6 yrs (stopped in April) and had finished my 3 yrs. of semiannual Prolia shots in March 2018. So now I have to recruit an endocrinologist for my army of specialists (including 3 oncologists). Hoping to be able to resume taking calcium & D3 if my blood levels of both are no longer dangerously high. Anyone else here dealing with osteoporosis--if so, got any tips (and hopefully, no horror stories)? Bob's first medical partner & mentor just died this week, 2 years after fracturing his pelvis, causing a cascade of problems. I also lost a dear friend at 71--she was severely osteoporotic (a lifelong smoker & brittle type 2 diabetic) and at 69 broke her hip falling on her icy front stairs. She was in no condition for surgical repair. So I'm feeling more than a bit paranoid right now. The worst T-scores are my L femur and L 4-5 in my spine. FRAX score says that w/in the next 10 years, I have a 6.3% risk of a broken hip and 1 in 4 odds of any other major fracture,
On the bright side, both Gordy & Leslie have re-tested negative after their isolation week and are back in the outside world.

Cindy, cyber hugs to you.
aviva5675, sounds like you are in the same area of Florida as I. We are fortunate.
Since there are so many displaced people, DH and I have the property that will soon be ready, we are hoping to reach out to someone that may need it. It will take years to rebuild.
The sun is out and it is cool and pleasant. I will enjoy my morning walk. Sandy, Wilma was the last straw for us to sell the little house in Ozello. The storm surge came in so fast we could not move all the ground level things fast enough. We parked on the bridge and walked through chest high water (on me) to get back to the house. It is a stilt. 6 weeks later we moved out.

So sad all the devastation in FL. Everyone, stay safe and hope the devastation doesn't get any worse. Thinking of all you FL gals.
Sandy -my oncologist said only 3 years on Prolia - my last shot was in April 2022 - last Dexa 2021 and improvement but still osteoporotic. I've been osteoporotic for several years even off the AIs. Next DEXA summer 2023. Endocrinologist in September said Prolia for life!!! Now I will get it through my PCP. I see oncologist in 2 weeks and curious as to what he will say. I've not had two doctors with totally opposite opinions regarding medications/treatment. Didn't pay for Prolia with oncologist, but had different health insurance. Through PCP its $120 per shot. But it's now Medicare, so don't know what it would be with oncologist. Cost of drug with oncologist was much. higher than through mail order pharmacy so not going to mess with things.

Take care to see that you don't lose sight of the one thing that is constant, beautiful, and true: Everything will be fine—and it will turn out that way because of the special kind of person you are. So, beginning today and lasting a lifetime through, hang in there, and don't be afraid to feel like the sun is shining just for you. -Collin McCarty

I certainly hope more attention is paid to climatic changes as Ian has been such a trauma for Florida and is headed elsewhere, although I hope and pray it won't be nearly as damaging there. Still hard to imagine going through something so catastrophic. It will be a long time and nothing will be the same.
Sorry to hear your dx. Sandy. One of nature's ways of slowing us down and encouraging us to be careful in daily life. Hope you can find ways to minimize issues and problems with meds or therapy.
Cool today but sun so it won't feel bad at all. I will need to get on the ball. Have juggled my list where I really do have to priortize now. That is what I get for my procrastination. Hopefully I get it working better.

Hi, all. I have been busy but reading the thread daily. Welcome, all, especially our new members. Praying for our Floridian members. Going to PT weekly. Hamstring is nicely stretched, and the limp is gone. I have been told to use it normally, and not worry about further damage, because I can always get a new knee.
My garden got through two frosts without significant damage. There will be another week of growing season, so I am preparing for pickling little nubbins of okra, as well as huge amounts of tomatillos. I have been picking nasturtium seeds and have way more than I can use next year, did some research, and they can be pickled and used like capers. The recipe is the same as my pickled okra recipe.
But right now, I am getting ready to sew again. One package of saris is a bit delayed because the supplier's American partner is in Florida, but the shop got through it undamaged.

Thinking of those in Florida. Spent lots of time around Ft. Myers and Sanibel in the past. Such a beautiful area and am sad about the devastation and loss of life. I hope everyone remains safe.
chisandy - I have a friend who has osteoporosis and had Marodyne Liv therapy. It’s a devise that you stand on that vibrates. It’s supposed to help bone strength. It’s in addition to meditation.
Busy running to the dentist with what I thought was a tooth issue. Endodontist thinks it’s my TMJ and that I need a different mouth guard at night. Then the cat hurt his leg (so much for cats always landing on their feet). Nothing broken, but he was limping a bit. Vet gave us medication to mix in his food and some to squirt in his mouth (ha ha), and told us he needs to eat less. He’s seems to be much better - has notbeen on the top of the refrigerator yet, but he and his sister have been playing together again.
Be safe and healthy.

Hope all who have a residence in Florida have survived the storm with little damage to their homes. I feel their pain but know that with time homes can be fixed but lives cannot be regained. Our insurance company was a godsend with our home damage (it was the restoration company that was the bane of my existence). I am hoping that your insurance companies will be helpful and not a pain.
SIL and husband live in Naples and report that they lost power but all seems okay. We had Learned pre-storm that nephew had just purchased a home in Tampa area but had no storm protection so don't know if that means storm shutters or insurance. He's not in the home yet. DB and SIL have a home in panhandle and she reported homeowners insurance was increased over 300% in just 8 years. Checked into new company and found that it was a good price compared to the $4,000.00 quotes she received from them.
Had a dying ash tree looked at and found that we will lose the last 3 ashes we had to emerald ash borer. They are mature trees and need to come down before they do damage to our shed, possibly our home and there is one on the front lawn that would only damage the lawn if it fell. Two require extraction with a crane due to their locations and height. Tree guy said all his work lately has been ash tree removal including those that have been treated unsuccessfully. So we are waiting until he can coordinate with the crane guy. Another unexpected expense but one that has to be done for our safety.
petite1: Nice that you are already thinking of how your rental could be of use to someone. CindyNY: I hope you get more accurate news about your home.
Cool here at night and today. Expecting rain from Ian to hit this area on Saturday late night. We have been dry so flooding should not be an issue unless we have a drenching downpours. Hope the weekend is kind to everyone.
