Yes, by all means, wait until spring or summer to work on the cabin. Save up your money so that you will have enough for a professional to do the things only a professional can do.

Unlike a drop of water which loses its identity when it joins the ocean, man does not lose his being in the society in which he lives. Man's life is independent. He is born not for the development of the society alone, but for the development of his self.

My DB let me know his FIL died this morning. DSIL was in the process of readying to go to the hospital when they got the call. How fitting that an ex-Navy man decided Pearl Harbor Day was the day for his final salute. They picked up his wife and went to the hospice to say their good-byes. DB was hoping he'd hold on until tomorrow since it will be the 16th anniversary of my DF's death and then we could have a "Dad's day". I'm hoping they have connected in heaven and are busy exchanging "Dad" jokes because both loved them. I'll have to let my neighbor know because they worked together for many years. It will be a military funeral so I am not sure when it will be scheduled.

We went to DGS's basketball game. He is on a new team this year and they actually function more as a team. They won! It was a really good game, too. We missed DGD's game yesterday, but she has a dance recital this coming Sunday and we bought tickets for that. We went back to DS's house and had a really good pizza with his family. It was a new one at this place and was a thin crust with red sauce, cheese and chunks of Italian sausage. It had lots of meat and was delicious.

canarycat, I agree with carole that you and cindyny should start a business together. You both seem to have DIY skills and are good at it.

petite1, house repairs can be overwhelming and sometimes you have to walk away to catch your breath. As much as you are in despair about the needs to make your cabin comfy, just remember, once they are done, you will have an escape that protects you from the elements and an escape from the heat of FL.

Tomorrow the HVAC people are to return and hopefully have a solution for the A/C duct problem in the attic. Once that is fixed then we can have to guy come back to finish his repairs in the guest room closet. Once he's done the closet needs to be painted and I need to order the closet organizer I had seen on Walmart that seems it will work in this shallow closet. I am tired of looking at 4 rooms in total disarray: guest room DD's old bedroom, living room and dining room. I still have been unable to locate a dry cleaners that cleans custom drapes. I may have to take the drapes down myself, give them a good vacuuming and then rehang them once the room is painted. I was hoping to have this done before Christmas, but it's not looking good.

I have a pain management appointment tomorrow to see what the next step is for addressing my unrelenting back pain. When they measured my height for the PFT's I have lost another inch and she was generous because I had my shoes on and she only deducted 1/2 inch for them. So my BMI will shoot up with this height loss and negate the recent weight I have lost.

I put the Christmas tree up, which is a big step after nearly 10 years of none, and have yet to hang any ornaments. It needs to be straightened because it has a slight lean. I have a collection of handmade ornaments I made when I was in my BSN program and would work on them when I needed a short break from studying. I also have many from my childhood, those made by my children and then those we have collected over the years. I probably have enough for several trees. My DS's house was fully decorated and looks lovely.

Hope everyone had a great day and waving "hi" to everyone.

I now have a cardiologist. One of my doctors recently suggested that I establish myself as a patient of a cardiologist. I did so today and the meeting was pleasant. I had an EKG and will have an ultrasound of my neck arteries at a later date. Other than that, I'll return for an appointment in a year. My appointment was for 11 am. I was out by 11:20 and made it to the gym in time for the Monday exercise class.

Tomorrow I may get out the carpet cleaner and clean the living room carpet. I would like to get the living room done before the Sunday after Christmas when my siblings will be gathering here at my house. There are six of us. The traffic areas in the bedroom also need cleaning. I'll see if it seems like a good idea tomorrow morning.

Marti - I seem to remember wearing zip down sweat shirts so they could get to my port. I second the suggestion about joining the "starting chemo" group. Mine still touches base periodically on our private Facebook account. Hope today wasn't too bad. You may have trouble sleeping tonight because of the steroids that are usually given with the chemo.

Loved the pictures of the Basilica. It was closed for construction when we there 9 years ago. We really enjoyed Barcelona.

Chris - what is happening to health care is just a crime! I hope you can figure something out. My daughter expects hers to go up over $500 a month and she is only in her '50's and healthy. Thank goodness we are able to help her pay for it. She doesn't qualify for MaineCare but is told she's too poor for Obamacare and of course her job doesn't offer any help.

I love seeing the snow pictures but don't want to be there. I'm playing golf in short sleeves instead of shoveling.

Bella is back with us. Her dad had a stroke Friday night. Jie has health issues too so who knows whether we'll become a 2 dog family

Computer is about to die on me so I'll say good night.

  • hi friends! You’ll get a kick out of this. I DID join the starting chemo in December group. I am the ONLY ONE THERE.

so can y’all sub in for a while on my questions?

carole - I am SO IMPRESSED by your ambition! Cleaning carpets is so far from my mind right now… enjoy your golf! It looks like a beautiful picture postcard here we’re getting an inch or two every day here right now, crisp and crunchy under your feet, darkly in the light, makes the world so sweetly silent. Our snow here is teeny flakes that you could sweep with a sidewalk broom. It’s like powdered sugar. Almost like the beach at siesta key - only way colder and no waves.

Petite - welp, I’m right there with you I live in a 120 year old home and one of the cabinet doors came unjoined at a trim connection and just fell off the other day, so we are paying a guy to fix in and rip the shag carpet out of the master bedroom (previous owner’s cat pee inspired my cat - not safe for chemo even with carpet shampooing my home will also be a chaos nightmare for a very short while.

Canary - would you like to come visit and fix up my house? I am terribly short of the skills to DIY it, but I am an excellent gardener, I do some watercolor, and I’m a great cook! Labor swap? You’d be really well fed!!

first chemo yesterday - keytruda, carbo, taxol. In at 7am, out at 11:30. Not bad, with labs and all. And the outpatient pharmacy delivers to your chemo suite, which is super nice. Well staffed, efficient, very clean. (I’m a nurse - this is the stuff that tells you a LOT about how care is).

I’m getting my port Thursday. Since I’m at a university cancer center, I keep expecting to be treated by fellows and residents, but so far it’s all clinical professors. My IR doc who’s putting in the port, finished up two fellowships in the 2010s.

No side effects so far. I was burpy last night and took a Zofran before bed just in case.

so far, things are kinda sorta well in hand.
    Love to you all.

Marti - I too joined chemo groups and really appreciated all the advice. But I choose one from a couple months back that had lots of active posts. Check out October or November.

I found full zip up sweat shirts that had large "pockets inside - perfect for holding the drain bags after surgery. WalMart I think but that was 12 years ago.

Minus, that sounds like good advice.

We're having roller coaster weather patterns. Cold, warm, cold, warm. It doesn't really matter to me as long as the house is comfortable. The sun is shining today.

The carpet cleaning didn't happen yesterday, but I did get some housecleaning work done. It's a continuous process. The master bathroom is needing attention. I may get to it today before I go to the gym for the Wednesday senior class with Autumn. It's so popular, we sign a list and get a number. The limit is 56 older folks, which makes for a full gym.

Dh was able to wear his C-Pap for half the night last night. Hopefully, he got some good sleep. He said he will try again tonight. He still isn't able to use his partial.

    Happy Wednesday to all.

Good morning to all. I hope those who are participating in Christmas shopping for gifts are having success. I plan to get my lighted Christmas wreath up today and connected to a timer. Tonight we have the annual woodworkers guild Christmas dinner at an event place. I am only acquainted with the other men and their wives. There is usually a slide show presentation with items built by the members during the years. That's always interesting to see. There is also a gift exchange for the men who participate. The men who have brought gifts draw numbers and select a wrapped gift on a table. Which reminds me that we need to get dh's gift wrapped. I'm not sure what he has picked.

Note to self. Buy a large calendar and a purse calendar for 2026.

    Happy Thursday.

Wrote a long message and of course, lost it. I was switched from an APAP machine to a Bipap after my sleep study results. I scheduled an appointment for today to get the new equipment including an oxygen concentrator, too. It seems I have nocturnal hypoxemia, so I need oxygen during sleep only. I went for appointment expecting to get both, but it seems the oxygen tech is off on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It was a new worker who set up my appointment and the person I met with was not happy with him. It was an inconvenience, but after learning the oxygen concentrator is quite large and heavy, I'm okay with a home delivery and introduction.

The tech I did meet with for the Bipap was very nice, informative and spent over an hour showing me how to assemble the machine, reviewing daily and weekly cleaning routines, and answering my questions. I was provided with my new mask, tubing and tried them with the machine before I left. This is a 30 day trial for the mask and if it works, they will send additional supplies. Pressures are much higher on new machine, so I have to adjust to this.

The oxygen concentrator and equipment will arrive tomorrow between 11 and 1. This experience was the first truly positive experience I have had with this company and I've been dealing with them since 2017. The owners were not known for being customer service oriented, but felt to be the lesser of the evils when it came to DME suppliers in the area.

The owner not realizing I was within earshot (because the tech forgot to shut the door between rooms) told another worker that I was the *itch from (named my town). The tech almost had a seizure because he knew it was about me. Meanwhile, I had never had an interaction with this man that I could recall. When I left, I had to pass his desk and the desk of the person he spoke to, so I turned to her and said, "let me introduce myself, I am the *itch from (named my town) so you will be able to put a face to his remark. She looked flustered and he abruptly left the room. I then left.

They did need to replace my equipment after the tree strike since the machine was covered in insulation from the attic. They dragged it out for over a month because it was still under warranty, which they reluctantly finally revealed. It may have been on the phone when I was trying to sort this out. I think they were trying to wait so they could charge insurance for a new one.

The daughter is a lawyer, which she revealed every time you had to interact with her. I just reminded her I was a paying customer and expected decent service whenever she was rude. She was a bully and her staff would try to keep her from answering the phone for this reason. The last time I saw her she was actually pleasant. Still trying to decide what was the change due to? Not sure if they are still the owners though. I did report this experience to the NP.

It was bitter cold in the 20's but due to high winds felt like it was in the teens and it was another gray day. Yesterday was gray and rainy. so today was an improvement. I'm ready for spring.

DSIL's father's funeral is next Tuesday. It will be a military service and he will be interred in Beverly National Cemetery in NJ, with his first wife. His second wife was a military widow, she survives, but I imagine she will be buried with her first husband when her time comes. DD and DSIL are going with us so they will drive and it's about an hour from here. We need to leave by 9 am at the latest. Lunch will be at the restaurant we used for my parents' 60th wedding anniversary party. It has since changed hands, but is still an Italian restaurant that DSIL says has great food.

Set up new machine and was able to sync it with my phone for daily reports, if I so desire. It is bigger than old machine in width and takes up quite a bit of space on nightstand. However, it is narrower from front to back so I could put the light controller behind it.

The tree is up, DH was able to straighten it and I need to start decorating it. Guess that's it from here. Hope everyone had a great day. Waving "hi" to everyone.

I spent the morning outside putting up our Christmas lights. It was in the low 70’s but sunny so I sweat my butt off. I had to put a clip in my hair to get it off my neck. I used 4 older strings with 1 new one. Tonight I could see one looks less bright than it should. I should look for a replacement after Christmas.

On the back lanai I draped lighted garland over the hurricane shutters. Everything is on timers except a set of 5 large (6”) snowflakes- blue & white, with 8 different choices for lighting - they’re inside the house, on the kitchen window.

I’m so far behind, I had to wrap & box up my glass & ceramic pumpkins before I could begin doing anything else. Ha! All in house Christmas decorations are up too.

What’s left to complete is the indoor tree and decorating it. I’ll put the tree up tonight, but leave decorating it until tomorrow.

We have a community dinner tomorrow night for our Christmas celebration. I really have nothing christmassy to wear to it. I’ll have to look closely at what’s here, I don’t want to go looking for clothes for myself but may have to. Maybe a blouse to go with shorts.

I still have to do cards too! I bought some of those specialty pop up cards - a decorated fire place, a Christmas tree with cardinals, and a large one of ice skaters at a rink with a tree behind it (Fresh Cut Paper). I took them to the post office to make sure they had the correct postage, I didn’t want them returned for insufficient postage. I also grabbed 3 books of Christmas stamps. Hope to get them completed and mailed out by Monday.

That’s it for me, national news is over. I’ll get to setting up the tree. It’s a pencil tree, easy to get up if memory serves me. Have a great nite!

I finished the tree decorating today. Pencil tree, with way too many ornaments, but I think it looks nice.

    IMG_2934.jpeg

I have a giant bin full of ornaments and it’s gotten to where I need to pare them down. I’m not putting everything up, so it’s time to donate.

Tonight was our community Christmas party at the clubhouse. We had a great time, everyone at our table won a door prize except me. The food was good, as well as the company.

Tomorrow morning is my video call with my doctor for my Medicare wellness check. I couldn’t get it straightened out on my phone, just wouldn’t work. So I’m using SO’s computer. We did a test try this morning and I think I know what I’m doing. We’ll see!

Hoping you’re all doing well and have a good weekend coming up.

I got a chuckle out of that quote. It's so true.

We're attending one Christmas concert this afternoon, at a Baptist church, and another concert tomorrow afternoon, at a Methodist church. We go to the second one every year with another couple and go out to dinner at a good restaurant afterwards. Our neighbor Belinda sings in the choir at the Baptist church and made a point of inviting us. I think I'm repeating myself. Apologies.

Cindy, the tree I gave away last year must have been a pencil tree. I called it a skinny tree. Yours is pretty. I do like Christmas trees but can't be bothered any more with the trouble of putting up and taking down.

We have freezing weather coming our way. I'll have to bring my little collection of succulents inside. Everything else out in the yard is on its own. Some people put sheets over blooming shrubs.

    Happy Saturday.

First night with new Bipap machine was a nightmare. According to my Fitbit I got less than 2 hours of sleep. It was set for autostsrt and stop, but when I reconnected after pit stop, it failed to start. On a learning curve, I waited, but then had to manually restart. Mask leaked and all in all itcwas a miserable night. Called the office for advice and was told that oxygen tech who was to deliver oxygen concentrator would be able to assist. Teaching did not include trouble shooting. Tech told me the machine needs a deep exhalation to autostart and walked me through it. It worked. Last night I was exhausted so in bed before 10 and had another glitch, which the instruction manual helped me fix. Slept well until 7:30 this morning.

Cindyny, your tree looks lovely. I started decorating mine today, but ran out of ornaments. DH needs to bring down another bin, the angel tree topper and the tree skirt. It's a work in progress since it looks bare yet. I will take a picture when it's done. First tree after 2015.

Tomorrow we have tickets to go to DGD's dance recital. However, we are supposed to get snow starting at 7 pm and every time they give a weather update, the amount increases. First it was a dusting and the last report was up to 4 inches. DD called to say she will pick us up and help us traverse our very steep driveway. DSIL will drive. It's in the late morning so we should be home before dark.

DS's neighborhood had 14 families participate in a cookie crawl. Each family had to supply enough to feed the participants. He said they had samosas at one house, Grinch punch and cookies at another and other food offerings plus drinks. He said it was fun. He made snickerdoodles which was a cookie he had to make for his high school cooking class test. DDIL had asked which cookie she thought he should make and I suggested them. He said they turned out well and people liked them. Not your usual Christmas cookie. I love them, oatmeal raisin, and molasses cookies.

It is still bitter cold here with temps feeling like the teens when it should be in the 50's this time of year. We are supposed to get some 50's weather this week.

Petite1, sorry your are dealing with a sinus infection. Hope it clears soon.

Carole, enjoy your concerts. I love Christmas music. Hope your cold snap doesn't hurt your bushes.

Still no PFT results and it has been over a week now. Ridiculous since reports are all computer generated.

Hope everyone had a great day. Waving "hi" to everyone.

There was a lot of talent on the stage at the Baptist Church Christmas concert but dh and I didn't really enjoy the concert. It was too loud and the music was more Contemporary Christian than Traditional Christmas. We knew the church was a huge property but were still amazed at the size of the worship center. The chairs were very comfortable. We sat by an old tennis acquaintance of mine and her dh. Her granddaughter sang a solo.

We definitely will not attend the concert next Christmas, whatever our circumstances.

Hope everyone has a good Sunday.

Hope everyone had a good weekend. Happy Hanukkah to those who are celebrating. Chris, if you are still in touch with Karen, please tell her I'm thinking of her too.

We have our decorations up - such as they are. The house feels festive but don't do anything outside other than a wreath and I stick artificial poinsettias in the large pot on the porch. DD always sends us a lovely pine branch tree - I think this year's is the prettiest ever. Ken's nephew brought us a real poinsettia when he was here last week and we always put the stockings that I needlepointed out but Santa never leaves anything in them.

Sent a gift to Ken's great-niece (age 8) but even Ella (age 14) wants money or gift cards. DD is always having to pinch pennies so she gets cash and an Amazon gift card. . We don't give gifts to each other. At our age we trying to give things away, not collect more. I did enjoy going to Kohl's to buy gifts for the kids at the food bank. We had planned this as part of our regular Wednesday date but Ken's sciatica really was acting up so I went alone. I thought I had been a really smart shopper until they told me the 30% coupon I had didn't apply to toys.

Have to admit that although we had our usual Saturday gang over last night, I didn't dig out the Spode Christmas dishes. I plan to give them to the next grand-niece who is being married in Jan. but she has asked me to keep them until she is out of graduate school and in a more permanent location. They will be expensive to ship so better to wait as she also has no storage in her Cambridge apt.

Next week is the Niners holiday party and Saturday is Ella's Christmas skating show. Maureen always buys us front row seats. We'll eat on the way home. I'm always the driver for our outings.

Have a good week. Hugs to all who need them. Feel better, Petite.

Happy Hanukkah to all here (and those still with us but no longer on this forum) who celebrate, though the joy of the season is dampened by the tragic events of Sunday). Didn't go to our temple's party—Thursday was the deadline for RSVP's & tickets, but I knew from last year I wouldn't be able to get there in time after rehearsal downtown. But Saturday's preliminary dress rehearsal went so well, and Sunday's weather forecast was so brutal, that the director canceled the Sunday rehearsal. It was too late to be able to contact the temple of course—offices closed over the weekend. We missed our Nov. visit to Cooper's Hawk for dinner and our freebie wine bottle, so after the Bears game (leftover cassoulet at halftime) and a nap we drove up to Morton Grove. I was still so full from the cassoulet and a cup of seafood bisque that I had most of my entree boxed to take home. Meanwhile, I forgot to buy candles, so our tiny USB-powered menorah is in the front room window. I did snag the last box of potato latke mix at Whole Foods, along with the closest thing they had to "sufganyot:" mini beignets filled with strawberry-guava jam. Will make the latkes for dinner, along with our Cooper's Hawk leftovers.

We're on break from rehearsals till Jan. 2, so our assignment is to watch the videos of the numbers, practice the choreography, and (for some of us, present company excepted) memorize lines & lyrics to be fully "off-book." Illnesses, family matters, work (most of the cast members are still actively practicing law) have played havoc with rehearsals—one of the two principals had to drop out this week because of a high-risk pregnancy, and the other is recovering from surgery. So there were a lot of rewrites, reassignments, "place-holders" in the dance line, etc. One cast member showed up Saturday for the first time, after a long jury trial; another—who will be playing fiddle onstage in a production number—is on tour with her band. No flu or COVID, knock wood. I'm managing with the aid of lidocaine foot cream for the Toe From Hell and an array of topicals (Voltaren, Bio-Freez, Arnica gel) for my back and groin strain. Nobody knows, though—I "touch up" my pain management in a stall in the bathroom on another floor of the building, (Not wearing socks under my dance flats—see below).

Seeing my endocrinologist this afternoon—will ask if I can titrate my Zepbound back down to 5mg. The 7.5 is making it difficult for me to eat enough of what I'm supposed to, and despite evening noshing (not bingeing, thank goodness) on carbs, staying out of calorie deficit is a challenge. When my endo told me last year to stop losing, I was 135 lbs. on only 2.5mg. Now after titrating up to 7.5mg, I bounce between 128-131, depending on time of day and contents of my gut. I know that for my height it's not underweight, but I've lost considerable muscle; and exercise is not really possible if I can't wear socks and closed shoes (other than UGGs) due to that excruciatingly painful third toe-tip callus/plantar wart/bone spur (and its neighboring second hammer-toe with a corn). At least the bunion and ingrowns are behaving themselves. Will ask if I should lengthen the interval between my remaining four vials of 7.5 from a week to 10 days, and then go back to 5mg weekly.

I'm worried about Bob's mobility—he admitted he needs a "grabber" to pick things up off the floor lest he fall forward again like he did Nov. 1, and he has trouble pushing himself up from chairs. He really needs PT for strength & balance training, and refuses to take anything—oral or topical—for his back & knees. And he claims he can't take time off to go to the orthopedic clinic, much less PT 2-3x/wk. We don't have room for a power lift chair, much less an extra outlet for it. And restaurant seats pose a challenge if the tables aren't bolted down so he can use them to push himself up. His weight has a lot to do with it—he admits he eats gargantuan lunches because he's afraid to eat breakfast on workdays (lest he can't get to a bathroom in time before making it to the office), His portions are huge (twice the size of mine and even half again as big as my pre-GLP-1 portions), Saving grace is that he doesn't like junk food.

We got down to 1F last night, and it's a relatively toasty 6F now (going down to 2F before slowly ramping up into the low 20s). Above freezing Tuesday, and rain and low 40s predicted for Wednesday. As I type this (about to run the dishwasher and head up to bed) the faucets are trickling to prevent pipes freezing and I'm sitting in the den wearing a heavy Irish sweater in front of a space heater. (Inexpensive one from Home Depot—still waiting for the good wooden-cabinet one, like we had in Lincolnwood, to be delivered a week and a half late). We need at least two radiators bled, the system balanced, and am seriously considering a multi-room programmable thermostat, assuming that's even possible with a hot-water-heat system. (Installing a heat pump & forced-air system is a bridge too far for this 117-yr-old house). Though our landscaper/factotum sealed the windows with plastic, the place (especially this room) is like an igloo, at least for me. Wearing layers in my own house is getting kind of old. I admit that I'm also less tolerant of cold, what with age, anemia and loss of body fat but it is objectively too chilly in here. (Even Bob sometimes wears his bomber jacket indoors). Having an insulation specialist in this week to do an energy audit (using an IR gun to determine the R-values of the perimeter walls & attic ceiling), and probably inject foam into said walls and lay extra batts in the attic. State Farm agrees that since the house was never this cold before the fire, any repairs involving insulation/weatherproofing should be covered, especially since the contractors had stripped three rooms down to the studs and put up new drywall. I've given up on the "public adjuster" (whose company is not BBB-registered but is subject tp online complaints) and his geriatric contractor buddies (whose chief is still in Poland, likely afraid to return to the US lest he be turned away and put back on the next flight to Krakow).

Enjoying Spain, PR and MN's Northern Lights (too much light pollution here) vicariously through all your photos!

Good morning. I went to an Eirinn Abu concert, yesterday. It was beautiful. I am waiting for the floor people at my Florida house. The NC house got to 13 degrees. I am glad to be in Florida. I am still not feeling 100%, but think I am on the mend. Hope everyone has a good day.

I thought 28 degrees was cold, Sandy! Hard to imagine 1 degree. I dribbled water in the kitchen sink last night, and we have running water this morning.

Our outdoor decorating was accomplished yesterday. I hung the lighted wreath and plugged it in. I haven't connected it to a timer yet.

We skipped the concert at the Methodist church yesterday. Our friend Linda wasn't feeling well. She had a cough and sinus congestion and a low temperature. I had sinus congestion and a lack of enthusiasm for going out. LOL. Dh and I were both happy to stay home.

Today I'm meeting a friend for lunch. She lost her husband recently and is having a hard time with grief. He had bad health but she was not ready for him to go. She's a retired nurse and was committed to caring for him.

The sun is shining but I will have to dress in warm clothes.

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence... We need silence to be able to touch souls.
