Ally, I am so happy for you!  You sound like you are doing well.  And cancer free!  Fantastic!  I hope I do as well.  I just received a call from my BS office and it looks like I may not be able to schedule surgery until Jan. 27.  But as I recall you had some time between DX and MX, correct?  Maybe I won't worry too much about it.  It is pretty weird walking around knowing I have cancer, tho.  I'm definitely beginning to understand how the waiting can get to be the worst part.

Meg, I had poking type pain as the hematoma from my stereotactic biopsy subsided and turned into scar tissue.  My BS recommended that I massage the area.  It did seem to help (pretty painful, tho).  And it also seemed to reduce the dimple I had been left with after the biopsy.  I seem to recall from reading these boards that massage is a therapy for capsular contraction.  It might be worth a call to your PS to see if it's a good idea for you.

Fortunate1, you really are busy!  It may turn out to be a blessing in disguise.  I find that if I am busy with work or doing things with/for my family and friends I tend not to dwell on my cancer as much.  I hope it works for you too and you get through the holidays with all of the joy you should have at this time of year.

Tracyanne, how are you doing?  I hope you are healing quickly.

Leftovers are calling me.  I'll check back later.

    Hi Laides,

Hope everybody had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I'm healing well. Still some pins and needles here and there but it really feels good to be cancer free! The only weird part is my foob was completely numb when I accidentally touched it today.

Ally, it's really nice to hear your pathology report came back good! I was worried about mine too. Like tracyanne, I had DCIS close to both skin and chest. Luckily my path. report is clear too! No worry about radiation any more. Tamoxifen is a different story but I'm happy for now. I hope you'll have your drain out tomorrow. It really made a big difference once it came out! (I had mine removed last Wednesday when I saw my BS)

New Bride, I had my mx 4 months after dx, in between a lumpectomy (which led to correct dx) and a re-excision. It surely didn't feel right when I walked around with cancer in me. You'll be fine, just like me.

    Liz

good morning ladies......meg how are you managing left breast pain while being so busy at work? new bride i also had a hematoma after a biopsy....that was painful, it took months to go away. i was diagnosed w/ dcis in april, had lumpectomy at the end of july then i just had this surgery ....it was actually 7 months...so i don't think you have to worry......not that there is anything good about dcis...but because it is not invasive...those of us diagnosed with it have some time to make our decisions. Liz...u sound like you are doing great...i also have numbness....it feels weird. i thought things were going well with me until this morning....my 4 drains were draining small amounts of serosang, which is red mixed with yellow drainage, making it very thin...i know that is normal so i thought for sure my drains would come out today, except when i woke up this morning one of the drains is draining very thick, red large amount of drainage. i have a feeling that is not what ir is supposed to be draining, i'll find out later today at ps office.....hope everyone is well.......ally

Ally1423, What a relief! Wonderful news! Thanks so much for the update. It sounds like you are being very well cared for and "babied" during your recovery. It surely makes one grateful....even with drains....that sound like they are doing their job, but 4 drains? I only had to put up with two. Hope you manage to lose a few at the PS office!

The bra I wore post op is a front closure, cotton spandex bra. Definately not sexy, but comfortable and cheap. I can now were underwire bras (6 months post op), but don't really like them. You can buy the bra from Walmart, etc. It's marketed under Fruit-of-the-Loom, Bestform and Hanes. See it here.

Liz, glad to hear you are healing well (yeah, no drains!) I second your advice for Meg9. Who knew so many of us had hematomas? I had a very large hematoma after my needle biopsy. Quite scary and painful. Lots of swelling. I was told this was unusual. Hmmm. Meg9, I'm wondering about Lymphadema for me and my "pins and needles". I am trying to set up an appointment with a pain specialist. The implant people say pain is caused by: CC, surgical technique or....I'm blanking. Sorry.

Fortunate1, I keep thinking I won't have this or that emotional response, but I seem to be following a normal pattern. Guess I'll be in your shoes in six months. There only seems to be one way to go through all of this....and that is to go through all of this. Here's wishing you a soft and healing passage in your "land of nod".

Hi to all the rest of us....and have a great day.

Ally, that is the most fabulous news! Best of luck at the PS appt. today. Drains.... ugh! And Liz, you too! Good path reports all around. I'm so glad there are so many women finding cancer at the pre-invasive stage.

Sunshine today, and lots of work to do - a nice combination.  Until later....

Oh yeah, I wear underwires, soft "lined" cups. They're comfortable for me and make natural and foob match well.

    Hello Everyone,

It's good to come here and see that everyone one is doing well! We may have some complaints, but on the scale of things...things are good!  Tracy has finished Rads, Ally has a great path report, Liz is feeling better, I-am OK is a superwoman, Carole is probably on the nineteenth hole having a good time! Fortunate1 has reached the one year mark and mamo was good! Okiegal has nipples and a new laundry room! New Bride and Shoshi are prepared and have a BS & PS they are happy with! My hope is that Year is doing well also. I hope I didn't forget anyone. What more could we ask for!

It was a stressful day in the neighborhood. Pastor's first day at work...she is very nice!

This morning and afternoon helicopters were flying over my neighborhood (house) looking for a person of interest in a homicide of a popular elementary school gym teacher.  The crime took place in a nearby town, but they found his car about a mile away from my house!  The schools were on lock down.   At 8:00PM we received a call from the police dept that they located him and he was found in my nieghborhood..about a 3 miles away! I thought for sure he would have taken a bus to NYC. At least I'll sleep tonight. I was really scared today.

My low white blood count was first discovered about 3 years ago by my PC. He sent me to a hematologist/OC. I went through a series of test at that time. I also sent me to a neurologist. I have a little arthritis on my spine. They found nothing else. The OC wanted to do a bone marrow test. She said it was my choice...I checked with my PC and he didn't think it was necessary, so I refused. I continued have blood tests for 6 months. WBC stayed at the same low marker. After 6 mos I stopped going to the OC.  When I was dx with bc I thought that was probably the reason for the low WBC.

After bmx, I visited 2 different OC. They both said my WBC was low. I explained it was low before. The OC is see now is concerned. At my last visit, it dropped even lower...lowest ever.  She said to come back in two months to see if it bounces back. My hope is that it does.  If it doesn't, I'm sure she will do a bone marrow test which I'm not looking forward to. :o(

At least I'll get through the Holidays. :o)

I wish you all a happy Wednesday!

good morning ladies.....meg i love the way you summed up all the positive stuff going on with all of us. we will all keep an eye on your wbc count, and hope for the best. i heard about that shooting incident yesterday on the news...pretty scarey when it's close to home.i went to the ps yesterday, he removed 2 drains and left 2, he's hoping i don't have internal bleeding, as the drainage from one of the drains got very clotty and thick, he thinks i might have had a clot or something. i go back next tuesday, he also increased the mg. dosage of percocet.....hope everyone has a wonderful day......ally...also shoshi i received a private message from you that was dated awhile ago. i didnt even realize this site had that...anyway i sent you a reply.....ally

Ally, Sorry to hear about the clots and thick fluid in your drains. At my first PS visits after bmx, the NP pulled on the drains to clean them out. When she did, red blood clots came out. A couple were quite large and got stuck. She pulled again and it moved through the drain with fluid. It was really gross. NP made no comment about it...like it was a normal occurrence. After that, the fluid drained at a faster rate for the rest of the day. I hope your clots are not something more serious. I will say a little prayer for you to heal without complications.

It's getting late..off to work. Good day everyone!

Ah, Meg9....a nice positive counting up of all our blessings. Always a good thing to do and always a good way to start the day! And to add to your list, we are relieved that you and everyone else are safe and sound. What a nerve racking day and an interesting start for your new pastor!

Alley1423, what a relief...only 2 left. Have you been able to leave the house? How did you dress with so many drains? I struggled with only two drains and the lighter clothing that came with spring. Speaking of drains, toward the end of my "drainage", I became an expert in how to "strip" the drains. There's probably some information online. It really helps to clear them out.

I will be painting in the laundry room today. Mostly "touch up", but I'm also touching up the rest of the house, so that will keep me busy. Soon, it will all be finished and everything will be back in order.

Shoshi, glad to know you are still there. Hi, to  everyone else.

Meg, what a wonderful way to start the day!

Ally, glad to hear about losing a couple of those pesky drains. I had two in my one little breast, and also got very good at draining them. DH and I laughed about my looking like the Star Trek Borg queen. Okiegal, I looked at the post op bra. It's almost identical to the one I wore, given to me by my PS. Very comfortable.

Happy day to everyone, painting, and getting to know the new pastor, and healing, and preparing. Things really are good for us.

It's cold and damp today. I'm going to bundle up and load the kiln. And later I'll meet with the Dean of one of the colleges I work for. Wish me luck. I'm going to try to reinstate my vesting that was lost when my teaching load was reduced.

Sounds like everyone is doing well...good to hear.  My pain is finally decreasing.  The burn is healing/peeling and a rash that had developed in the radiation treatment area has begun to fade.  It helps that I took Tuesday through Friday off to stay home, take pain meds, rest...wear nothing against that burned skin.  Getting some papers graded, books read, sleep slept...guess the long naps account for the fact that I am awake at 4:00 a.m. typing this :- )

TracyAnne, so glad to hear you are doing better! That should give Ally and others some encouragement that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Ally, I noticed after a few weeks that I started to feel better....it seemed like almost each day there was a little milestone. Maybe you will be there soon? I was able to wear smock type blouses (it was spring), so that made dressing with drains a little easier. I don't know what I would wear in cold weather, but I bet you have some advice for Shoshi and any of the others who have upcoming winter surgeries.

I can't believe my painting projects are taking so long, but hope I'll finish (more or less) this morning. And yes, life does return to normal. I even think my stinging is disappearing (mostly).

It's a beautiful and sunny today....but cold. Hope the winter vegetables are surviving the low temps. Did I tell you all that my sister and I built a little hoop green house for the small raised bed? It's very cute. Hope it works. Last week we had some nice maturing arugula, spinach, other lettuces, kale, carrots, bok choy, brocelli rabe and leeks, but we had freezing temperatures last night, so I'll have to check and see if they all survived.

    Time to paint!

    Good Morning Everyone,

Tracey, I'm glad you are healing. Soon life will return to what I call, our new normal! Fortunately for us, life goes on, but we are forever changed....our new normal.

Ally, My bmx was in May. We still had some cold weather. I purchased 6 very soft knit, long sleeve tops that snapped in the front at Macy's... in the sleepwear department. They are in solid colors and I wore them everyday, everywhere. They do not look like PJ's, were very comfortable and I felt dressed.

How is the fluid now? Still bloody and clotting?

Okiegal, I think the pins and needles are a part of the healing process. For some of us it takes longer. I am always aware of these breasts. Another new feeling started about a week ago.  Sometimes, when I bend over or reach to do something, I feel like my bra is pressing against my breast and my breast is getting caught on something! I think it's the scar...areas of the scar may be hard and the softer surrounding skin moves, but the scar doesn't, creating this feeling of being caught on something or being poked. When I felt this..I readjusted my breast in my bra and realized that it is was the bra...its something else.

On a different note...I found that if I flex my chest muscles and can make my breasts pop! I showed the DH my new talent and he just shook his head and laughed. LOL

I will look further into 3D nipple tattoos as soon as the holidays are over.

It's a beautiful day today and I'm not working.  My plan is to clean house and maybe do some Christmas decorating.  This Sunday is the installation of the new pastor and I am busy preparing for her luncheon. I was able to buy poinsettia plants for centerpieces on all the tables. I bought them on sale at Lowes for $1.00 each and they are healthy looking plants! I hope I don't kill them before Sunday!

I hope everyone has a good day!

Ally, the next step for me is 5 years of tamoxifen.  My cancer was 90% ER+, and the tamoxifen suppresses estrogen.

I next see the oncologist in six months, just after the bilateral mammography she ordered for the first week in June.  I will likely have a nipple created for the left and breast lift done on the right sometime this spring.  How nice that the choice for the timing of that (and for even having that surgery at all) is up to me!  Yay! Some aspects of this bc thing I actually can control :- )

Strange to be done with doctor appts./treatments.  I know you, Shoshi, New Bride, Liz and others are just getting started...and at that point, you want those appointments and that monitoring and that feedback.  Now, I've reached the point three months out where I'm ready to handle it all on my own for awhile--just heal and deal, you know?  Let it sink in that in all likelihood, I do not have cancer...I had cancer. That is a powerful thought.

Ha!  Talking through my pain meds...did I say a nipple created for the left and lift on the right?  I got it backwards...my left breast is my natural breast :- )

Hi, everybody.  Our Thanksgiving road trip went well.  The Thanksgiving meal was lavish and tasty.  Afterwards most of us (except for a few lazy males!) pitched in and did all the hand washing and drying.  The china and crystal and silver and fancy serving dishes were all returned to their storage places without mishap.  The 2nd leg of our trip to the Chicago area was enjoyable.  We had a family get-together on Sunday at a nephew's home and met the new little great-nephew.  Now we're back at home and I finished up doing the laundry yesterday.

Our Louisiana version of wintry weather is making us hungry for big-pot meals.  I cooked chicken and sausage gumbo yesterday.  Dh cooked up a pot of chili today.  He cooked the pinto beans first.  So we will be eating leftover gumbo and chili for days!

I'm looking out of the window at some beautiful colored leaves, red and gold, still clinging to trees in our back yard.  The pecan trees have shed their leaves.  Dh will get the big riding lawn mower out as soon as the ground dries up a little and mulch the leaves.  It has been cool enough at night to enjoy our fireplace.  We switched to gas logs several years ago.  Much cleaner than wood without the sooty smell the next morning.

My body suffered from the lack of exercise for 9 days.  I'm back to walking my 3 miles but the joints protest.  It's very important to exercise when you're taking an aromatase inhibitor (AI) like Arimidex.

I read the back posts and am happy for the positive news and progress some of us are making.  Tracy, I hope you continue to feel better and better.  Same to Liz and Ally.  Okiegal, your winter garden sounds wonderful.  How neat to pick your own home-grown veggies.  Meg, I continue to be in awe of your competence.  Another luncheon to plan and oversee!  Fortunate, you're always so upbeat in the midst of stressful situations.  I admire you, too!   Shoshi and I Am OK, I hope you're both doing well.  YearoftheHat, I think of you and hope you're getting some of your projects done around your apartment.

My big December challenge is shedding some exta pounds.  My strategy is portion control along with wise choices when I eat out.

A good Thursday afternoon to all!

The rain is gone, having watered my yard for me. So now here I am in beautiful weather with sunshine and warm temps, and no garden growing. Okiegal you put me to shame. I ignore my garden in winter, there's just a little lettuce. I guess I can use the water rationing as an excuse.

Carol, your trip sounds delightful, and the very idea of a big pot of chili on the stove makes my mouth water. Yum. For us tonight, it's going to be turkey mole, bye bye turkey, or rather, adios.

Do we all have the flexy boob syndrome? Can you imagine us as a chorus line - step- kick- boob jump?

Ally, not to worry, the implants shift down as the muscle relaxes. Your PS may recommend a compression band to urge them into position.

Good day, ladies.  And greetings from the frosty mountains of Northern California.  There is snow in the higher elevations. Days like this make me appreciate the cozy warmth of the wood stove even more than usual.  It looks like we're on track for a white Christmas.

Speaking of being on track, I just got a surgery date.  Jan. 20th.  I guess I'll check out some of the other forums to see if there are some good shopping lists.  If you ladies can share ideas for "must have" items I'd really appreciate it.

Okiegal, THANK YOU!!!  The hyperlink to the MX bra is so helpful.  I went to Walmart and got three yesteday.  Please take note, ladies.  The reviews are correct.  This bra does run small.  My other bras are 32A.  The MX bras are 38.  Mine are by Fruit of the Loom.  Cost:  $10 ea.

Liz and Ally, I'm beginning to feel like you are my DCISisters.  I am paying very close attention to your progress and praying for a similar outcome.  It is so nice of you to share all of the details of your surgery and recovery.  Especially since it's all so recent.  The drains sound...well...oogy.  But I'm so grateful that you're letting me know what to expect.  I would really like to avoid any nasty surprises. Please keep the info coming.  It really helps alot.  Ally, I am glad Your PS decided to remove a couple of drains.  Did he give a reason for so many?  Also can you tell yet how your nipples are doing?

Shoshi, I guess you are up next.  Jan 5th. Right?  Do you now have a "Shoshi  List" of pre-op questions?  If so, I would love to see it.  I have pre-op appts. with BS and PS in mid January so until then I'm going to be gathering as much info as I can.  Are your surgeons going to perform a nipple sparing procedure for you?  I hope your neck is feeling better.  I can sort of relate.  I have sciatica and other recurrent pain from past injury to L3 and 4.  You can never tell when it will get you (except that it always seems to be when it's most inconvenient).

Tracyanne, I'm glad you are feeling better.  Cancer in past tense.  Just healing and dealing actually sounds pretty good.  I hate needing all of this attention from the medical world.

Meg, you are always so positive and helpful to all of us.  I wish we could do more to help you with your low WBC.  Do you suppose there might be boards like this that have to do with hematology?

Fortunate1, you're a one woman advance team of practical information for those of us coming up behind you.  I know that it's a strange time for you but Happy Mammoversary.  I hope we all get to follow behind you with our clean 1 yr mammos and become Fortunate2.

Oh, two deer just walked into the yard.  I think I'll go look at them for awhile instead of this computer.  I hope everyone is enjoying their day.  I'll check back a little later on.

hi new bride.....well it's been almost 2 wks since my surgery and today i actually feel ok.....before surgery i went to walmart and bought large, soft, button down shirts....i haven't worn anything else. my ps gave me a soft, hook in the front bra...but i'm more comfortable without it...and he said that was ok. i don't know why i had 4 drains....also very important....my ps gave me prescriptions before the surgery for pain and antibiotic...i had them filled before the surgery so that when i came home from the hospital they were here.....you'll be fine also i'm assuming you are recently married and are living with your spouse....that probably makes all the difference...i live with my 16 yr old son...my 20 yr old daughter came home from college for about 6 days so that was very helpful.....but it's great that you will have someone to help you.i did food shopping before surgery...but now i really can't do it because you really can't do any lifting...i was thinking of calling the food store to have stuff delivered.all the advise i got from everyone on this site was very helpful...and they were right...i'm definetely feeling better......

hi everyone, i just want u all to know how much i love reading your notes..i may not respond to much b/c i am trying to limit my time on the computer b/c of my neck....

NewBride..i wish i had pre-op questions..just basically i am going to have a list of things that my ps & i spoke abt (sizes, drains, pain med including the on q pump) & make sure its in my file so there is no confusion..basically which one will prescribe what to u & when ur in the hospital if u take every day meds allergy pills, stuff like that who will have it written so u get it.  When i had my hyterectomy this was just 1 dr & he had what i took & i never got em & the nurse had to call to get them prescribed so just make sure u know who is doing the prescribing...button down shirts is a must i know from my breast reduction surgery cotton, comfy shirts..nothing fancy..if u may not have as much help as u will need or if ur DH may lose patience after a few days have friends know u will be calling them..sometimes having someone just visit u is good...& get u food...right now Ally is our girl to ask..wasnt there someone else who also just had their surgery..my isnt until the 5th of Jan..wish it was sooner..oh well...we just better not get a major snow storm during the first 2 weeks...!!! I luv the snow.  i am glad everyone is doing better here..1 thing i always tell my friends, listen to ur body..it knows best..if ur in pain do something, if something feels off go c the dr..who cares if it is nothing..i'd rather b safe then sorry....u know ur body better then anyone else!!

    Hi Ladies,

Good to know everybody is doing well. It's hard to believe how well I feel less than 20 days after my MX! Now I know I definately made the right choice - MX instead of another re-excision and radiation. Now my biggest problem is I can't lift my right arm. I still feel quite sore, especially the armpit. Hopefully as time goes by that'll also get better.

Ally, good to know the clot and bleeding are getting better. Hope the rest two drains will be out next Tue. when you see you PS. I had to be lucky for having only one drain and for only 9 days! When I looked at my new boob I felt the same way as you - the top is fuller. Probably because of this I feel really tight in that area.

Newbride and Shoshi, I think the MX cami I brought back from the hospital works really well. It's step-in so you don't have to raise your arm. I think I"ll wear it for some time. It feels even better than my bras! The only drawback is it's quite pricy ($86 each). I got a couple and I hope my insurance will pick up some of the cost.

Tracyanne, good to know you feel better. I'll be on tamoxifen for 5 years too.I'm 100%ER positive. I guess next week when I meet with my oncologist we'll discuss when to start. It's kind of scary to me.

Okiegal and Fortunate,  good luck to your gardens! I have nothing in mine this year!

Carole, good to know you had somw wonderful time during Thanksgiving!

Meg, hope you had some rest today. You'll be busy in the coming days!

    Good night,

    Liz

Such a busy board! And sounds like everyone is holding their own, healing, dealing....and flexing! Meg9, I can do the same trick...I'm thinking our chorus line costumes should have tassels in just the right place...Tongue out

My sister reports that everything looks great in the garden. Apparently the little green house is working properly. Lots of Arugala...I wonder if I can cook it. I've only ever eaten it in a salad. I'm sure it would be good steamed, with some olive oil and garlic. Isn't everything? Carole, sounds like you had a wonderful trip! You are making me hungry with your menu planning.

Meg9, yes I think all of our strange sensations are part of a long slow healing process. Although we return to our normal lives fairly quickly, there is still a lot of healing that continues to happen imperceptably over many months.

NewBride, glad to hear you like the bra recommendation. I think you all sound like you will be very well prepared for you upcoming surgeries, but like Alley mentioned....food is definately something to plan. But also have friends and families help out. Alley, you will be able to do your own shopping by week three, probably. Hang in there!

Hi to everyone else and hope we all have a great day.

wow...liz..you sound great....i was facing the same decision as you...my breast surgeon and 2nd and 3rd oponions that i got told me that resection would leave me very deformed as i had 4 positive margins w/ microinvasion and due to the fact that i have small breasts they would have to take most of it..and i had lcis in the other breast... the ps felt that it would be better to do mx in the other breast too due to the lcis in the left and hx of right breast and i would get better cosmetic results to do both.also i had numerous calcifications in the other breast and i probably would be having biopsies 4ever....i'm glad it's all over with...okiegal you are so right...i can tell by the 3rd week....with no drains..i'll probably be back to food shopping with no heavy lifting. thanks for the encouragement...it really helps. i've only had arugala in salad....i bet it would be great w/oil and garlic....yummy...have a great day....it's sunny out today so i think i'm going to take a walk...i feel like i have to get out of this house...taking too many pain meds to drive......have a great day everyone......ally

    Hello Everyone,

Welcome back Carole, it sounds like you had a good trip visiting family. It must have been nice to be out on the road again. I miss not having my summer vacation.

Okiegal, I think I saw some tassels we can use in my box of Christmas decorations! Tongue out Good luck with your garden...I missed that this summer. I'm so looking forward to next summer!

New Bride, Sounds like you live in a beautiful place. Occasionally, we see deer. Last week I was driving home from the store and about 5 were on my corner. That was very unusual! I love to see them. I wish for a white Christmas also...just not a blizzard!

You should make copies of all your test and path reports. Keep notes from your doctor visits. Many times when you visit these drs they will not have your current reports. It is good to have a copy with you.  Reaching will be a problem, so keep things low so you can get to them. Opening medicine bottles was a problem for me also. I was told not to shower until the drains came out, but every day I stepped into the tub and used this shower attachment that I used to bath my golden retriever. I worked well to wash half of me and I used a soapy wash cloth for my upper body.  My brother washed my hair in the kitchen sink. I also bought an electric shaver for my legs. The pain meds will constipate you...I use the lowest dose of Ducolax... purchase this ahead of time.  It's hard to get in and out of bed. I had three pillows against my head board to sleep with and one under each arm. Make a chart to write down how much fluid is is coming out of your drains each time. I emptied my drains twice a day into a small measuring cup the hospital gave me. I cooked meals that I put in the freezer. Family and friend brought food when they visited which was a great help to the DH. Make sure your future appointments are with your drs and not the NP.

Liz, there are exercises...stand in front of a wall and have your fingers walk up the wall. You can do this standing sideways to the wall also. It takes time, but you will feel better.

Fortunate1, I have a tassel with your name on it! Are you having another sale? Good luck to you if you do.

Tonight the men will drag out the tables and chairs for Sundays Luncheon. I will set the tables tomorrow morning. I'm excited...I think the poinsettia plants are going to make the room look festive. I've been checking them everyday....2 more days..I hope they don't start to lose their leaves. So far I haven't killed them.... I never have any luck with poinsettias.  Everyone is bringing a plate of food or dessert so there will be plenty to eat. She is the first woman pastor in the 103 years of this church. I hope all are receptive.

I hope all who are healing are doing well. Have a good weekend everybody!
