I was visiting the hospital yesterday and remembred when you had to be 12 before you could go into a patient room.  They also had short visiting hours, and only two people could visit in a room at a time.  Now there are rooms that look like they are having a family reunion in them.  As for the room I went to, we had 7 family members in it at one time.

Yeah, remember the outdoor signs, "Quiet - Hospital Zone."  Like anyone would pay attention these days.

And speaking of quiet - remember when the librarian used to shush us?  Now libraries sound more like stores.

  • Saw the pic and thought ugh, CocoPuffs....I hated them....hated all those flavored cereals like Fruit Loops and Captain Crunch....BUT then I saw the Good and Plenty box,,Yum, I love Good and Plenty.  Like anything licorice flavored.

    Marybe!

It's CHOO CHOO Charlie for Good & Plenty.

    And CUCKOO for Cocoa Puffs.

You silly rabbit (and that's Trix,) you got your icons all mixed up!

p.s. When my kids were little we sent away to General Mills for 10" plush dolls of Cuckoo and Silly Rabbit.  I believe they were even FREE.

  • I have cereal bowls with Tony the Tiger, Snap Crackle and Pop, The cornflakes Rooster, Corny ( would not know that, but it is written by his image) and Groan, The fruit loops Tucan or parrot or whatever he is.   We sent in boxtops for them and if I had not microwaved them which made the wavey ( Hey the micorwave makes waves...who would have thunk it?), they would be in good shape.   Remember the early microwaves?...they were huge.  We had a very early one, A Litton and my Dad got it as a permium for ordering dental supplies.   It was really heavy, took up and lot of space and was very scary....if you cooked bacon in it, it would turn colors, pink, blue and would glow.  A hot dog might get a lumpy burned place on it....it was actually a mutating machine.  You can bet I never ate any bacon that came out of that thing.

Yeh, I remember that Silly Rabbit.

Oh yeah, Marybe, DH worked for Sears.  We had a gigantic one we bought in 1976-1977 probably closer to end of 1977.  I loved it 'cause it wouldn't heat the house up.  I could put a 9 x 13 casserole dish in there.  Cooked many a meal in mine.

I loved and still love Cocoa Puffs.  I would eat cold cereal (doesn't happen now) and then go lie down on the bed because my stomach would hurt. It was the only one I would eat as a teenager. My tastes are more eclectic now.

I spent ages about a year ago searching online for raisin cookies or raisins biscuits (English) and recipes for them.  They have some imported ones at World Market but I just won't pay their price.  I know I've had them but can't remember much about them.  My mother was a pretty adventurous eater for a small town Texas girl.  Maybe they were more common back then.

The one I remember is Sunshine Golden Fruit Raisin Biscuits.  They weren't fancy, but mmm, so good.

It disappeared in the late 90's when Keebler took over the Sunshine brand, so I blame those rotten Elves for taking that delicious cookie away.

So sad that people seem to have given up sharing their memories.  Maybe I'll go back and read my own memories again (to see what I have already forgotten (ha!)

After all these years, I still think back fondly to "back-to-school" shopping with my mom.   Every Fall, she let me pick out one outfit as wild as I wanted it.  I remember a certain doubleknit orange, green and yellow striped, mock turtleneck dress (sounds hideous, but was cute and mod) that I got with a chain belt (which were cool at the time.)  I wore it with two pair of fishnets, orange and yellow.  When you wore two pair, the colors had that optical illusion quality.  I can't remember exactly what age I was then, but I was old enough to wear a garter belt to hold those old school fishnets on.

p.s.  Hey you parochial kids out there...did you get to do any back-to-school shopping back in the day?  How boring was it?  (Just messing with you.)

I have thought about this thread often, but miss Marybe and her memories.  Must move forward I suppose.

I had a pair of bright pink fishnets.  I hated the way they felt on my legs, like they were wrapped tight with string or something.

Anyone here have braces?  The old style where they were a complete band around your teeth?  I remembr at the end of my treatment, my orthodontist tried a new technique where she glued the wire brackets to the front of my teeth.  Now that is what they do all the time.  I hated when she removed the bands, took a little hammer and chisel thing to knock 'em off.

braces only on the top here.  I had the rubber bands that I had to physically string from a front bracket to a back bracket daily.  prior to my braces I had a very wide gap between my 2 front teeth. My dentist (not orthodonotist mind you) cut the little piece of skin the holds your lip to you top gum - I don't know the physics but then my teeth closed up & he put on the braces.  I HATED the compound that was in the tray that made the molds...makes me gag just thinking about it!

You know, I never see kids, or anyone else, wearing retainers anymore.  Is that not in the teeth strightening regimen anymore?  I remember having to put adhessive on mine.  That was gaggy!  Cleaning it off was even gaggier!

Meece,  The retainer is alive and well, if my son is any indication.

I guess I just don't run into a lot of teens and stare in their mouths.

Don't forget, after all the active orthodontic treatment, some just wear the retainer at night.

Ah... I had and upper and lower retainer I wore all the time for a couple of years, and at night for years after that.

I had a bit of a trip down memory lane Saturday when we ran into Tony Dow, former child actor.  It's funny that I wasn't even born when Leave it to Beaver was filmed, oh, maybe its last season.

Article in paper just the last week or so about Tony Dow being a sculptor now.

He's got gorgeous white hair and looks pretty fit for someone in his late 60s.  He, his  wife and granddaughter were out shopping and stopped by the koi show we were participating in.

Elimer- had to chime in... I did got to school with uniforms and believe it or not it was the coats and the shoes that were the big deal! As we had a choice of 3 shoes and the coats or sweaters had to be blue! LOL! I loved clothes still do even though not as much fun now that I don't look as good. But we had "Wear what you want days" and as you can imagine- it was HUGE! Of course I was the kid who was terrified I'd wear "real" clothes on the wrong day so always had to call a friend in the morning and ask just to make sure....

I can totally picture your dress... I had one with those colors also but was sort of swirly and when I describe it - it too sounds dreadful but I thought I was gorgeous in it!

Yes I had braces for two years and the dreaded retainer which you had to be careful of not throwing it away in a napkin in the cafeteria. My son has top and bottom retainers now but only at night! One time we were up visiting my grandparents in N.J. and my sister convinced my Mom that we could eat salt water taffy from the boardwalk - Fralenger's! But we wouldn't chew, we'd just suck on it. Well of course we broke our braces and had to find an orthodontist. When we did he hadn't seen the type of braces we wore so he removed them!!! We then had to have new ones put on! I don't think my Mom ever got over that one - or the expense! It was soooooooo bad.

Ooooh, Stanzie.  Sorry we had to bring up your mid-age memory of braces...that sounds like a real nightmare!   As kids, that salt water taffy was just a little forbidden fruit, but now that you are a mom with orthodontia bills of your own I am sure you can reflect on the magnitude of cost generated by that escapade.

I came on here to write/remember something else, but your post reminded me of what was probably my costliest childhood memory:  I was about 5-6 and wanted to "say goodby to Daddy" as he was pulling out of the driveway.   This was a narrow city driveway.  I opened our side door to wave, just as he was backing up and he backed right into it.  I know I scratched off the paint on his station wagon and even dented the side too.  I didn't get into trouble, but there was a little yelling.  I don't remember having to see the daily reminder of that.  Thank goodness he had a friend with a collision shop.

    --------------------------

O.K. now what I had on my mind originally was the whole Suzy Homemaker thing.  All those little appliances.  Then came the doll.  Then it became an insult if you got called a "Suzy Homemaker," or was it a compliment?  A regular Suzy Homemaker.

(Look at those open-mouthed smiles on those kids.  Who was in charge of that photo shoot?)

And then that reminded me of "Suzy Chapstick" -- Olympic skier (and spokesmodel) Suzy Chaffee.

My best friend calls me Suzy Homemaker and I take it as a complement.  A few years ago I played off that when she had a "Come as you are" morning bridal shower for her daughter.  Everyone else came in sweats and pjs and I came in a dress, high heels, and a lacy apron. w

Which reminds me of "come as you are" parties.  Did any of you go to any?  Where someone would come and drag you out of bed for a pancake breakfast or the like?

When I was a kid, I remember sitting on the floor listening to FDR give his "Fireside Chats"... just kidding.  But I was remembering The Patty Duke Show today.  One of those shows about a kid that I watched when I WAS a kid.  Patty and Cathy Lane, and one was a tomboy, what's not to relate to?  I remember they also wrote some of the lame plots to have some of the teen idols of the day come on as guest stars.

"Still they're cousins, identical cousins and you'll find

They laugh alike, they walk alike, at times they even talk alike, you can lose your mind

When cousins are two of a kind."

I liked Gidget too, but I was so far from the surf culture of that show (and those Beach Party movies too) that it may as well have been set on Mars.

I loved Patty Duke!  The original Parent Trap with Hayley Mills, actually anything with Hayley, she was my girl crush for a long time! & Bewitched & I Dream of Jeannie-wanted those magical powers so badly, still do.
