Would someone please tell me what a "FOOB" is?

Fake Boob = FOOB!

Annette -- I agree. I don't like to call mine a fake. It feels like it's real to me -- well it doesn't have a lot of feeling but it feels like a real extension/part of my body... I prefer to think of it this way because it makes me feel more normal.

Tomorrow is my preop appointment for my exchange finally. I will get my surgery date and all the particulars of my implants. Besides the list of questions whippetmom has listed on the header of this thread i have a few more about my surgery. I always think of things i need to know after i leave. I am going to bring her sizing info with me so, whippetmom, I can ask you what you think of where we are going with this. I feel like my desires are a little different than a lot of women here because i actually like that augmented playboy look. I know my PS's goal is to get them as natural as possible. My main issue is that they are evenly placed, high enough, and big enough. I can see that I will have very good ptsosis (sp?) or droop, but don;t want to be too droopy.
These are the other questions I compiled for him so far. I think i know the answers from you all already but want to be sure of what my PS's preference. drains? if so how long?stay in hospital? Can I fly with my expanders? do i need a special card for the tsa?wear a bra after? do i need to be in a surgical bra?exactly what implant?recovery time?Anyone think of anything else i should ask? I always think of things after i leave.

Wow Carrol the exchange came so soon. Hope you don't have to have drains. I didn't.
I never flew with my expanders but I did just fly with my implants. I was pulled over but not because of the implants…
note to self: never wear a long skirt or dress when flying. My legs had to be patted down. Guess they had to check to see if I had explosives attached to my legs. OMG I can only image what would have happened if I still didn't have my hair and was wearing one of my long scarves too!0 -
Carrol2: Yay - It's finally getting close for you!
I flew with the expanders, but had no problems. At one airport everyone (I wasn't singled out) was going through the body scanner, but no issues there and no patdowns. I wasn't given a card for my expanders (oops), but I called the medical records dept. at the hospital and they faxed me the page from my surgical records that had the info (stickers, etc) about the expanders and I carried that with me just in case. I did make sure to get the card for my implants before I left the hospital last week after the exchange.
Something you might add to your list of questions is to ask about pain meds. Sometimes it's easier to have that prescription filled ahead of time instead of having someone scrambling to get it filled the day you get home from exchange. Just a thought...
Sounds like you've got it covered!

Carrol: I never flew with my expanders but I would carry the card the comes with your expander with the info on it. When I flew recently I opted not to have a free X Ray and asked to be patted down in a private room. The security officer, a woman, rolled her eyes and yelled it out that she needed a private room then two of them came in with me-it wasn't as invasive as it seemed. Then they tested my clothing for explosives. When I flew back home there was just the regular scanner not the new high tech machine but when I went to retrieve my luggage they left it open and I had to stop and zip everything back up. I was also flagged to be tested for explosives when going through the regular scanner. I told the security officer that if I was explosive they better alert my DH because I was on my way home, lol.

Carrol, I had flown several times with my expanders, no issues at all. I also liked the look of my high and full TEs, even if they where hard. Now I have my implants and they look nice and high too, I have slightly less fullness on the top of the left side (my PS says less developed peck muscle, I am right handed), he is going to give me additional fullness with fat grafting at the end of Sept when he does my nips. Also going to get a bit more clevage. The last thing I told my PS before they put me to sleep before the surgery was "error big". Be sure to tell your PS what you want (I am sure you will).

TinaT -- I like the image. "The outer shell is me, it's just the filling that's been replaced." My PS said something along those lines-- that I was replacing diseased tissue with bags of saline solution. It did make it easier to imagine. Whatever we call them and whatever shape they are, they're still ours and we're still us. Or so it seems to me.

Tina- that is a great way of putting it:))))

Tina -- well said.

I flew a lot with my expanders and never had any issues. Be careful lifting luggage and overdoing it when going through the expansion process. I had some discomfort, so I asked for help a lot!

Whippetmom,
Well, I went to pre-op today. I am so excited. My PS really didn't give me a choice about implants. I am not too worried he hasn't lead me wrong so far. He has simple refused several things that I thought I wanted and so far he's been right. So, fingers crossed.
Just a reminder: I have the Mentor 550 T.E.'s expanded to 720cc. I was not too interested in being big in fact smaller seemed better to me. I am over-weight so the 720cc do not look too big although they don't look small either. Anyway you suggested that Mentor 700cc in either Moderate or High Profile seemed like it would work best. My PS has ordered Mentor 750cc in High Profile. He simple said, "this will look best, there isn't that much difference".
I actually feel pretty good about his choices but just in case- do you think the 750cc High Profile is going to make a big difference. I know you haven't really seen me but you just seem to know all this stuff and we actually talked about 650cc at one point. Maybe I am nic picking a bit. I just don't know what a difference 50cc or 100cc make in regards to my T.E.'s.
I hope that question made sense.
Thanks Again,
Vickie

Hi all, I just updated my picture thread - 2 weeks post exchange.
Hope you're all hanging in there!!!
virokie - It's hard, isn't it? I guess the best we can do is to express our concerns and expectations (over and over, my poor PS), swallow hard, cross our fingers, and trust that the PS will do his/her best to come through for us. Did I mention that it's hard???

Ladies, I could use your help and guidance: I just left a message for my PS' nurse with whom I will be meeting in a couple of weeks for my pre-op. How should I present/ask about the implant advice from whippetmom (BTW - THANK YOU, whippetmom!) without sounding pushy or like a patient who thinks she knows it all?? I plan on asking her first which implants they are planning to bring to the exchange surgery, but what if they are not any of the ones Deborah suggests? This is where I will trip over myself: trying to sound confident about what I want without being pushy. How did you do it? Thanks.

Hi all,
It has been a while since I have posted because I have been busy and things are going well. Anyway, my exchange surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday (Sept 13th). At this point, my PS is bringing both Saline and Silcone implants to surgery. We talked about the pros and cons of each. Sounds like the major pro for Saline is that I would not have to have the extensive monitoring (MRI every few years). I hear that Silicone feels more realistic (that is important esp after wearing these boulders for the past 6 months). I get the impression that most women here went with the Silicone. What are your thoughts.
By the way, my expanders are on top of the muscle (not under as most have). Will I have an issue with the wrinkling look with Saline? I really want the most realistic looking and feeling ones I can get. My PS is a perfectionist and said that he would put in the Saline ones and if they didn't look good he would go for the Silicone ones. He also said that if after the fact I wanted to change I could but that would require another surgery and I am not sure if my insurance (which is very good) would pay.
Anyone else have this debate? What did you do and why? Thank

Issymom: I can't imagine they went over the muscle as the muscle is what they are stretching. There does seem to be far more problems with wrinkiling and saline and I was under the impression that both need an MRI. I have also heard the saline ones can feel hard. I can't imagine going for two sugeries-most use silicone because of the better results and only use saline for larger breasted women who need 1000 cc's.

Tina: It is hard. I remember you going through this worry stage just two weeks ago. It has been so inspiring hearing how well everything has turned out for you. I have seen your pictures and you look AWESOME.
Hefty Lefty: I just had my pre-op today. I had a 4 page list of questions to ask and I didn't even get my list out. I was a bit worried about that but once I got home and looked over my list I had gotten all my questions answered. My PS had his list that he went down and that just answered most everything. I only had one issue that I was concerned about so I did remember to ask him about that and I did ask what size my Implants would be. He did have a different size in mind from what Whippetmom suggested. I asked him about the size she suggested and he said, "we can do it if you want but I think this size is better and really there is not that much difference". I still wont be happy until Whippetmom say's there isn't that much difference. ha Anyway I guess you just need to know what your issues are and this forum and the ladies on it have helped me figure that out. Listen to your PS and if he doesn't address those issues make sure you bring them up.
I can't believe I am giving advice. I really just read this forum so I don't know much more than what is on here. I am just so EXCITED. I am almost DONE.

Hefty, the way I handled my PS is I told him "I having been doing research and I think _____. Do you think this will work for me?". This is sort of the passive/aggressive way to handle it. If he pushed the other way (which he didn't), I would then get more insistent on what my goal is - and I would vocalize my goal and my end result.

Hillck - I did some searching on the debate of Silcone vs Saline and couldn't find it (136 pages of comments). I think I want him to try Silicone only use Saline if they don't look good but I wanted to see if anyone had a strong opinion otherwise. As for not going under the muscle, I had a skin and nipple sparring BMX with delayed reconstruction. I was a D+ cup and so I had a lot of skin. I started reconstruction 15 months after BMX and my skin had shrunk (kind of like I had lost a lot of weight). The skin feels great. I have the crescent shaped expanders filled to 550cc (I am wearing a C/Dish soft bra). I think he ordered 700cc implants. I have most of my strength back but it does feel a little strange when I try to open a jar or lift some weights (the move a little more than they did when they were real). I did have on of my expanders flip so the hard piece where they fill is at the bottom instead of the top. Happened twice. The first time, the PS "massaged/manipulated" it back into place. It happened again a month ago and we decided to leave it where it is. It is annoying as it something hits my ribs but it is ok. Almost done.

Vickie: 750 ccs is even better! I did not think he would go for more than 700 ccs....so I like the way he thinks!!! You will be very happy....

Issymom the other advantage to saline is they will stay the temperature of your body. Now that it's cooler out I find my implants can get cool. I'm not cold because I'm pretty numb there but when I do my massaging I sometimes notice they're: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQaCy2lgb0I0

Issymom: I am not thrilled at all about your over-the-muscle placement. It just makes detection much more difficult. And you are a BRCA gal. Does your PS do primarily augmentations? I would go get a second opinion before you go through the exchange. What does your oncologist think about this type of placement? Unless you have some structural reason for this type of placement, I really would like for another PS to assess.
If you stick with over the muscle placement, you are going to want silicone implants or you are going to risk significant rippling with saline.
EDITED: I did just go back and read your second post. I can see the cosmetic benefits of doing this, based on your delayed recon status and skin retraction, but I still would just feel better about you getting a second opinion from another PS.
