I am finally reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo that one of my friends gave me for Xmas. Now that we have Showtime, I am ashamed to admit I don't read as much as I was there for awhile....have been catching up on some of the series I missed.
What is the BC Thrivers Cruise?

Click on the above link to find "eccentric" vacations. I read the book! There's something for everyone...beginning with the D.B. Cooper festival, celebrated in Washington state on the Saturday, following Thanksgiving!

Today I get to do nothing but read.... Between my walks. Just opened Geoff Dyer's new book, Otherwise Known as the Human Condition. Move over Mark Twain! His prior book Out of Sheer Rage should be a classic. This book joins it. A gem!

The Power of Now (guide to spiritual enlightenment) by Eckhart Tolle

VoraciousReader - I just finished Geoff Dyer's Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi!! for a change of pace and to get me in the mood for my daughter's wedding (8/2012) I started Wedding Season by Katie Fforde (guilty pleasure).
Have I mentioned Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann? a sheep detective story -set in Ireland where the sheep solve the murder of their shepherd using their natural skills.
For the kids: the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle series by Betty MacDonald, the Mary Poppins series by P.L. Travers, the Wizard of Oz series by Frank L Baum. also the books below whose authors probably wrote other good books:
Harriet the Spy - by Louise Fitzhugh
Matilda by Roald Dahl
Later, Gator by Laurence Yep
Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank B. Gilbreth
Life with Father by Clarence Day Jr.
Catherine, Called Birdy by Karen Cushman
Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
Pretty Polly by Dick King-Smith
Konakat - you have given me a list of authors I had not heard of - the only ones I knew on your list were Val McDermid and MC Beaton - whose Agatha Raisin - I alternate cringing from and cheering for!

I went to the library and requested some new books, while I wait I picked up one I had never heard of in the new books. Its called The Paris Wife by Paula McLain. It is fictional and tells the story from the wifes point of view. It's about Earnest Hemingways wife and her life with him. I am about 100 pages in and I think it's really well written interesting yet a light read. So far I am glad I picked it up. Has anyone else read it or heard of it?0
-
I just talked to a friend of mine who was away for the winter. She mentioned that she had read The Paris Wife. There is something about the way you both worded your satisfaction with the book so that I can't tell if it's worth checking into or not. I'd be interested to know how you feel at the end.

I finished The Paris Wifelast night. I liked the book, yet would categorize it as a beach book. It is not a book you need to concentrate on while you read. It is predictable at times but it makes you want to know more about Hemingway. I wouldn't put it on my list of books of have to read, I would borrow it from a library instead of buying it, but I would add it to a summer reading list as good to throw in the bag for some down time. Does that make sense?0

Laurie Helpful for me...thanks!!0

Glad it was helpful wenweb:)
So...while I was waiting for inter library loan books to come in I started one from a donate pile a friend had given me. She knows I am invloved with the library, usually our tastes aren't similar but she drops off bags of books to me that I mostly donate to the library for book sales. This was one I had picked out because it might be ok. I really like it! Its called Plainsong by Kent Haruf. I never know how to describe a book with out spoiling it? But it tells the lives of a young pregant girl and what she endures, the people she meets that help her etc. Two young brothers and coming from a less thanperfect family, the story of their father from his perspective. It's interesting. I always think a good bookis many things, but for me I know it is good when I am thinking duting the day- I can't wait to read tonight! And then stay up too late reading! I am 3/4 of the way through this book and can't see how it will dissappoint me.
PS My spell check isn't working so please excuse any typos:)0 -
As a high school librarian, and an avid reader, this forum caught my eye! The last two books I read were awesome. Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen: Ninety-something-year-old Jacob Jankowski remembers his time in the circus as a young man during the Great Depression, and his friendship with Marlena, the star of the equestrian act, and Rosie, the elephant, who gave them hope. (The movie is great too!) Little Bee by Chris Cleave: Presents a tale of a precarious friendship between an illegal Nigerian refugee and a recent widow from suburban London, a story told from the alternating and disparate perspectives of both women. I read a WIDE variety of books but confess my guilty pleasure is historical romance. I LOVE Amanda Quick, Julia Quinn, Stephanie Laurens--I could go on and on.....

Library Lady Kathy- I loved Water for Elephants.
I finished Plainsong and I recommend it. I really liked it and will be looking for his other books to read as well. Hopefully they are as good. I am about to start Still Alice on the recommendation of you ladies!0 -
KK what are you reading now? I just love this thread.

Water for Elephants was awesome read part of the book, went to see the movie, and then finished the book. Both were good
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest were very good also.
Anything Janet Evanovich, love love love the Stephanie Plum series, movie is coming out of the first book with Kathrine Heigl (sp?).
Guilty Pleasure.... I have read the Twilight Trilogy and I really liked them.
Shit My Dad Says was very funny.0 -
Just finished Unbroken. What a moving book! I read that the author rarely leaves her house due to severe chronic fatigue syndrome. Also, that Louie still does some public speaking. Great book!

I am here to report that I will NOT be finishing Jeff Dyer's new book, Otherwise Known as the Human Condition....until he publishes his next book. I do not know what I will do with myself if I don't get a "fix" of him everyday. I am so hooked and deliriously happy when I read his writings, I never want to finish reading his work...EVER!

I haven't posted here for a while. But, I've been struggling through The Thousand Autumns of Jacob DeZoet. Over a hundred pages in, and debating whether to keep on or give up. I think back in Jan. some of you mentioned it. I'm one who doesn't like to give up on a book. Silly not to if I'm not getting anything out of it. And, there are SOOOOOOOO many on my list. Opinions?
The last several books I've read I thought were wonderful - The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, A Summons to Memphis, The Jew Store, The Gift of Rain, Cutting for Stone, Half of a Yellow Sun. Just don't know about Jacob. Does it get better? Getting frustrated here!!!
My best to all,
Lane

WOW! I feel so LIBERATED, so EMPOWERED! I just pulled out the bookmark. Just slipped it out and turned away! Didn't even make note of the page number. Never to find out what happened between Jacob and the Midwife.

LWD Congratulations, and thanks for letting me know that I should never attempt reading The Thousand Autumns of….I started reading the Kindle sample a while back and even that was a struggle. The most empowering book experience I had was when I skipped to the last page of a book that I had lost interest in. It felt like I had cheated, but it was very liberating and it felt wonderful!0
-
Maybe that's what I should do. I also feel like it's cheating; but, in this situation, HA HA HA!

Lane! Am I relieved! I almost booked that flight! The only thing I am married to is my husband. Books? I have abandoned many! No commitment necessary with them. That's the beauty of reading.... You can enjoy them as much as YOU want and no one is going to know if you cheated if you never finish! Can't get any better than that!

I have learned a very important lesson today. Thank you very much! LOL!

If confession is truly good for the soul, then I'm going to do something wonderful for my soul. I JUST finished Cutting for Stone. I've been reading it for well over a month. I should have put it down and if I'd gotten it from the library, it would have gone back long ago. I always start reading about midnight and many times I read for 2 or more hours. This book was better than any sleeping pill - 3 pages and I was out. What is wrong with me? I know that all of you loved it - someone else please confess that they feel the same way I do about it. Good news is that my son gave me a Kindle gift card for Mothers' Day and now I can pick out a bunch of GOOD books!

Alpal... Why did you choose to read it in the first place?
