...that thing about acid versus alkaline, is, your body has a balance, and even if you try to keep it more alkaline, it will STILL find its own balance that it needs. But a friend of mine swears by a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. i am going to try that for a week, to help with inflammation, and possible arthritis, induced by anti- hormonals. i will let you know how it goes.

oh, goutlaw. good for you. i mean well, you are being very brave and good, you didnt even mention it ahead of time. i was freeekin out the night before, and let everyone know it! kefir is a fermented type of yogurt popular in the middle east, and its pretty good. look for it in your dairy case! if you cant have dairy i dont know, but if you can, just look for organic, or free range or grassfed cow milk. Zumba sounds fun, and great about you 15 lb losss!

goutlaw. THEY say just about anything ! Trends come and go as to what is good for you and what to avoid. Kathec has it right. You are staying away from sugar and bread. If you can keep it up good. But i can't give up bread. On the other hand, I love 12 grain bread! Wheat berry bread. I buy organic flour. I try to buy organic milk. Grass fed beef, free range chickens. Keeping it unprocessed as much as possible. But I'm not going crazy with eating. I do stay away from added soy but I use soy sauce. Don't drive yourself nuts. Do whatever works for you. Do what makes sense for you research but don't follow things before running them past your bull shit meter! LOL Much love.

Oh Moon. I love your "bull shit meter". .. made me lol...

..can i borrow that phrase, too, heavenly moonflower? mmmmmwheatberrybread. i am fer from perfect. there are these mango passionfruit gummies(and i never liked gummies) at tj's, and i swear i am addicted to them! and i eat them in the middle of the night! after ive brushed my teeth! worst possible time. i justify this by saying its for my scratchy throat, and also by saying the gelatin(eeeeew) is good for my hooves, too. when's the last time you saw a cannibalistic horse?
0 -
LOL! Hey, gelatin has protein! See you are eating good! LOL Feel free to use BS phraseology! LOL but that's true. It's the old if it sounds too good to be true it probably is not true!
0 -
Moonflower, I think she means good, because I think kathec is a health-conscious angeleno like myself and our demographic likes those things. I am so confused by all this, I was told to add flax seeds to stuff because I had to be concerned about the ratio between carbs and fiber and adding flax seeds was a good way to increase the fiber part. I was also told soy was fine in moderation. Aaargh! This is all SO CONFUSING!!! If we followed all the suggestions that everyone made about foods to avoid I'm not sure what we would be able to eat!
0 -
...i mostly jut stay away from fast food, prepakaged stuff, and salt and fat and mostly sugar, and never do fke sweeteners. like moon said, pls dont make yourelf nuts over this. i do eat flax for its benifits, and it tastes great too. hey cypher! where art thou? living aboutst, i mean.

Like I said, my MO said flax is fine and I go to a University NCI accredited cancer center which is currently doing research on the very topic! They also said soy was fine up to 3 servings a week of WHOLE soy. The research is actually pretty spotty as to what those plant estrogens actually do in the human body as far as the receptors go. I did drive myself totally insane over diet, so I asked for a lot of guidance in this area and here is what I came away with from my MO, his NP, and the dietician at the cancer center, "Eat a colorful plate, if you want wine don't drink the whole bottle, if you want cake, don't eat the whole cake", everything in moderation. I try to make good choices, but if I want to eat some candy, I eat some candy and then I drink my green tea and run on the treadmill. ;~) I am pretty convinced that STRESS played a major roll in me acquiring breast cancer at the age of 35 and completely stressing over every.single.thing I eat certainly won't do me any good. I try to remember that research is all over the place with many things {a lot having to due with various foods and supplements}, so I look for areas where research is solid such as, BMI and exercise being correlated with recurrence. So I do this, I try and keep my BMI low and my heart rate up. Even then, there is no guarantee, marathon running vegans still get bc and morbidly obese chain smokers don't ~ bc is a sneaky sneaky a-hole and sometimes there is just no rhyme or reason. You just have to do whatever, at the end of the day, makes you comfortable with your choices.

Thanks& Zumba was great a great workout like always! Start with Personal Trainer soon too!! I hope I dont get too tired from Radiation cuz I aint giving up this Fight! Hope I can do sit ups though lol

Twin what kind of green tea? Arizona?
0 -
No, green tea that I brew from a bag, Yogi or Traditional Medicines. Both are organic. I buy them in bulk from Amazon so that they are cheaper.

gout, I don't think you're supposed to eat the protein powder straight! I do what kathec suggests, get kefir from grass fed cows (but without added sugar), add protein powder (I'm using whey powder but I just saw that it has soy in it, eek!), frozen berries, and some of that nasty looking kombucha drink they sell at Whole Foods .... but I think any juice without added sweeteners would be ok. This research oncologist who specializes in nutrition and complementary medicine -- went to her after I was diagnosed -- she suggested the whey powder (but might have been a different brand? I ran out) and also suggested I add flax seed to stuff. She said I could have processed soy but not a whole lot of it. It gives me GI distress anyway -- much worse from that than I had with chemo! So no processed soy for me anyway. I mean the isolated soy protein stuff (the stuff that is actually tasty....). It's a good thing I'm not a vegan.
It's good to be really "good," but most people can only keep that up for so long before they decide to be really "bad" and binge. Which is probably much worse than being pretty good most of the time.
I've heard that the alkaline/acid thing is b.s. because your body adjusts anyway. However, I can imagine that perhaps the process of adjusting has some impact? I don't know. I'd be interested in how that cider vinegar thing works.

twin I love this:
"bc is a sneaky sneaky a-hole and sometimes there is just no rhyme or reason."
So true!
I have been crazy about the soy too, possibly too much. But I did finally find some soy free chocolate chips
The brand is Enjoy Life. 0 -
My breast surgeon was most adament about avoiding soy products as much as possible-and for my three daughters to avoid soy. My weight lifting son already avoided-he did not want "an boobs". My medical oncologist was not as stringent-but still in the avoid as much as possible. Prior to BC I had been eating a lot of meat replacement soy products as I consume very little meat. I do not like tofu of soy milk so not an issue. I have a book I will post-as soon as I locate my kindle-about soy and BC. It was recommended by one of the nurses during one of my surgeries.
Saw my MO today. Am going off tamox for 2 weeks. If pain has decreased will start Femara again-3rd time-but every other day. Had a HgbA1C drawn to check sugar levels. He finally did the reading on metformin and is going to put me on a trial. It is being used for people wiht mets but since my BC was so ugly and aggressive he has agreed to let me try since I did not get to complete taxol, taxotere, or Herceptin. This whole mess makes me tired.
Love to all

Susan I am SO GLAD you are getting on that metformin trial! Am glad your MO is taking such a sensible position about this, in light of your not being able to do the other stuff.
I am still paranoid about the lower leg/foot pain that is much worse when I'm lying down. Does that sound like tamox pain? I don't know. The whole thing makes me tired too.

agree. am so sick of it. bone scan results came back, they said i was a degenerate. just kiddin. they said there were degenerative changes. havent got my copy yet, and ive been off tamox 7 weeks now, so why am i still hurting? several months ago, they had sent me to a rheumatologist, and he did a blood serum level to detect that. nada. so what the**** is up? i am crying right this minute, i am so tired of this, and not knowing, and what the heck is it? accupuncture doesnt work on me, i am eating a non inflammatory diet, and i just .. dont...get it

Kathec, aren't you at least relieved that it's not cancer? I think there are different kinds of arthritis, I wasn't sure you could take a blood test for that?I also think it's a distinct possibility that the poison we were on did some damage that is causing us continuous pain. there's also fibromyalgia which is kind of a catch-all I guess.

thanks, yeh, cypher. i didnt mean to sound ungrateful, i just wish i knew what it was so we could treat it. im normally a pretty happy active person, but this is just wearing me down...

Kath I think ( certainly don't factually know) but it seems like so many of us get degenerative disc disorder, that starts slowly, than quickly again turns severe after on meds. plus other disorders, osteoporosis, severe arthritis, plus a few other back related problems due to (IMHO) all this crap.I know I was sent to PT for it and worked that for a while, but what I don't really understand is making the muscles stronger around it but the actual fact is it doesn't heal u just deal with it so while making all these muscles stronger it kind of holds all these decaying bones in place oh and usually the lower vertebrae is involved with this decay and I think once it's done, it's done. I'm not saying everybody but I hear of it more and more and none of the oncs seem surprised about it like Oh this is bad, it's just OK now u see another Dr.Of coouse it's not cancer so we're oh OK, but after a while the pain is tiring and u find u'rself limited in things. I thought water was the best exercise for me, but everyone is different. So if u can find out all u can and get to the right Dr. maybe u can cause some kind of halt to u'r problem.

kathec this is the problem with cancer treatment. The rest of the world thinks "yay your cancer free" but they don't see the real damage that we have to live with for the rest of our lives. Some of it is just cosmetic but pain, stiffness etc. really do effect not only your mobility but your demeanor. Hang in there. Hopefully they will eventually figure it out. BTW fibromyalgia I thought was nerve pain. Nerve pain is awful. (Personal experience with major case of shingles a few months after chemo... all nerve pain). I hope it's not that but there are meds for it that may help.

kathec - I had degenerative disk issues prior to breast cancer - it caused back pain severe enough that I had to quit a job because it involved sitting in front of a computer for too many hours at a time. I have found that my pain comes and goes dependent of amount of movement - the more I move, the less pain I have. I know that is not helpful in the short term because it hurts to move! Can you see someone who specializes in this area - maybe a rehab or exercise physiologist who can help you? I found that exercising in water or stretching like yoga was helpful.
For those discussing the protein/soy/flax issue - I switched to pea and rice protein powder (or vegan protein powder). I make a shake or smoothie with a combo of frozen organic berries, a scoop of the protein powder, a tablespoon of chia seeds, and coconut or almond milk. It is pretty good and a decent tasting way to get the protein in. I was having difficulty getting weight off (thank you, Femara) with 1200 calories and 6 miles of walking daily, so I changed my diet and completely eliminated corn, soy, peanuts, gluten, sugar, dairy, and eggs. When I say completely, I mean completely - and it is not easy because soy and corn are everywhere. The good news is that this is working, for me, and I have lost the belly bloat and 13 pounds in the last 6 weeks. I am now 4 lbs. from my pre-chemo weight. I try hard to make the food I do eat as "clean" as possible - grass-fed or pastured, organic, etc. The food I do buy is more expensive, but I buy less things, so I think it has evened out cost-wise. My biggest dilemma is entertaining and eating out - it is a bit of a challenge! I just had my BIL/SILS here for a 5k race - I had to make stuff they would like too, but it worked out fine for all!

Thank you, cami, and lago, and special k too! i do get to see my le therpist today, and am going to ask her if i should get a referral to her, as she also does physio. last time i saw her, she gave me some pointers for my shoulder, which has lost some of its mobility. i tried it three times in front of her, and it caused a deep pain in my chest, under the affected breast. i broke out in a cold sweat! but it felt better after, like something had popped! so i will ask for more to add to my routine. i was picking up 60 lb bags of concrete or stucko, or two 5 gallon buckets of paint, or a whole sheet of 3/4 inch plywood, by myself, before all this! now i dont even know if i can do 15 lbs... i did find a yoga studio that i can walk to, and its not very expensive at all. i think i will join the y, or this other gym that i can actually walk to by my house, working with a personal trainer there that is certified for working with injury recovery.
special, there is a friend of mine who is going to teach me how to make almond milk, but until then, there is a brand , "califia" that is amazing, almost as good as my friends. it comes with a vanilla flavored, or sweetened, but i like the unsweetened one, it only has almonds and water. it's delicious! thanks, everyone, and i am off soon to my magic hand lady!

kathec before diagnosed I just got up to using 10lb weights in each hand when I strength trained. You might be able to do 15lbs!
BTW I have notices a lot of us folks in the visual arts seem to be here. Do you think we inhaled too much rubber cement, spray mount, paint thinner etc.?

i have thought about those things we breathed, lago. the state of california has been phasing out VCO's (volatile organic compounds) for years now, and is still not done yet. the thing is, some of those things work and last so much better, like varethane, than the water based ones do. whenever i go to a mom & pop hardware store(if you can find one!) or an art store, i buy up all the good ol toxic ones. i just try to use them with extreme ventilation, and fans as much as i can. i personally have breathed, i dunno, lbs of sheetrock dust.

My mom paints. She says the same thing. I was never much of a painter. Sculpture, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Game design.

This appears to be a very, very positive development in future her2 pos cancer treatments! A natural compound no less!
