Nicky, Kathec – hoping for good news for both of you, keep
    us posted!

Oh gosh you stop checking for awhile then you’re lost.  What is this about checking your estraidol
    levels?  What is a dexa?

Pbrain – ditto on the grass fed.  You might also try goat’s milk +
products.  My understanding is that goats
are much more likely to be pastured, or to eat a “natural” diet (tin cans,
    weeds, whatever).

    Alaska, dry skin, seriously?
Like you’re a total idiot and couldn’t figure out to try putting lotion
    on.  I’m rolling my eyes.

Ugh I keep having bone pain.
Or I think it’s bone pain.  I had
it in my right foot but they did an xray and I just have arthritis and plantar fasciitis
or whatever, though I just read that it can be hard to distinguish between
arthritis and cancer?  Or maybe they
meant, in terms of how it feels?  But
lately I’ve been having it on the left (non cancer) side.  It has been waking me up at night but I haven’t
been as bothered by it during the day.  I
also read that bone pain is a potential SE of tamox.  Aaargh all these random symptoms are so
scary!  I’m going to try B6, acetyl
carnitine, fish oil, whatever.  It would
be great to get rid of the pain, but more importantly, these random symptoms
    always make me worry.

NICKY, no wonder u feel so bad, NO HERSHEY CHOCOLATES===I'm in withdrawal just thinking about it.Winking

Cypher all those crappy pills have SE's that can be wicked, and bones are one of them. I have to say some do very well on them, then there are others that it sucks the hell out of u'r bone structure. (sorry to be so blunt) but I can't be kind about those tiny little pills.

I've read that it is extremely rare (if at all) for BC to spread below the knees....so hurting feet is most likely something else. I've had achy painful feet for many years now and chalk it up to arthritis and old age :)

cypher. I've had bad arthritis for many years. My knees are shot. I have it in most joints and in my hands a bit. Arimidex makes it worse. I also have diabetes and get neuropathy from that. Yuck. But it's hard to tell which one the pain is from. So i just don't try to figure it out. LOL

Checking your estradiol levels is to see if your estrogen levels have dropped and your ovaries has stopped producing estrogen.

A Dexa is a bone DENSITY scan checking your bones for  density (strength). The negative numbers down to -2  denote osteopenia. Anything lower than -2 is osteoporosis. You can be -2.5 on the spine and -1 on hips or another mixture of numbers. Chemo, meds, and hormonal affect the density of your bones negatively.  Excercise, especially weight bearing, calcium intake and genetics affect it positively.

    Much love to all.

Thanks ladies, and very good to know Annie.  I guess the parts that freak me out about it are that I have been experiencing the worst pain while I'm sleeping and that I've been feeling it after swimming.  Like I limp a little bit when I'm getting out of the pool  Aaargh, I'm on 47 and very active!  I mean, I'm happy for it to be arthritis or something other than, you know, but still.  I thought maybe neuropathy but my last chemo was 11/2012 so it seems too far out for that.  Anyway all good info.

Nicky, I think you have much better chocolate options than kisses over there.  Dark chocolate is supposed to be good for you so there you have it.

Oh and kathec -- I seriously wouldn't read too much into that guy wishing you luck.  I have encountered no end of idiot people who work with cancer patients or screen for cancer and still are utterly lacking in common sense.  We all have, I know.  It just sounds like they are being extra cautious b/c of your history, which is good.

Hm. I'm thinking that the fact that putting arch supports in my shoes takes the edge off the discomfort suggests that it might just be something more like arthritis....  Well, tennis shoes on, arch supports in, dogs leashed off -- we're going to take a walk to the health food store and get some more supplements!  I'll just pop one more chocolate in my mouth before I take off....

  • Hi ladies,

My mom has just recently been diagnosed with Breast Cancer and I am trying to understand all her treatment options. As I'm sure you know, there is a LOT to absorb! She has IDC, she thought they said stage 2 but wasn't sure because she didn't think they could stage that quickly. (and I think she's in shock). She was scheduled for a Lumpectomy but they called today and said test results came back, they are sending her to a different Oncologist and she is "Triple positive".  Can someone explain what does this mean? It was the assistant not the Dr. that called and she was vaugue and just told my mom it means she has "options".  I would like to have an idea of what this all means and be prepared for what she's in for) as well as options and knowing the right questions to ask!  Thank you so much for sharing your experiences for others.

her_girl71 Triple positive means your moms tumor has receptors for Estrogen, Progesteron and has extra receptors making it HER2+ as well. This means that because there are several factors that are driving her tumor growth there are more treatments to combat it...and that's a good thing. Right now they may think she is Stage II but they really won't know for sure till they do surgery and see what's there. Our current imaging technology is not 100%. Things can hide or be made to look bigger. My tumor was actually .5cm smaller than they thought. My radiologist said the size could go + or  - with our current imaging technology.

I also sent you a PM

Can anyone tell me if Soy Protein Shakes interfers with Tamoifen? Don't Soy have Estrogen?

    Goutlaw,

I'm not on any pill yet, don't find out which one I get till next appt. But I was told NO SOY .  I do use a protein shake it's made by BIO-Trust it is soy free. It actually tastes pretty decent. Look it up on line, I buy it that way it is cheaper, but also in healthfood stores.

  • Hello!

My onc said okay to black cohosh with tamoxifen.  Any thoughts?  Not interested in effexor for hot flashes.

i heard edamame is ok. just not soy isolates. i am going to ask about black cohosh, too, cause i read somewhere else you are not supposed to do that, but i am not sure. another thing i was doing is flax seed oat bran muffins, for lowering cholesterol, and keeping me regular! But, then i found out that flax seeds have literally thousands of more phytoestrogens (plant estrogens) than soy!!! And the endocrinologist that they sent me to, is the only one who has talked to me about diet, at all. she said: kale, brocolli, yams, yogurt, bran, nuts, cabbage, fruit, cauliflower. all yum things!

kathec, all yummy things good or bad?. I guess I couldn't figure it out?

  • exactly!?  Can we eat those or not?

My understanding was process soy was bad. Granted I don't think I would have a diet with a lot of soy but I do eat it from time to time in my hot and sour soup.

all the good things after (she said). kale, brocoli, kefir yogurt nuts bran, etc. she did not tell me to stay away from soy, only so isolates in packaged stuff. she did not warn me off flax!

Lago, soy sauce doesn't count.  It is heated and femented, so no real phytoestrogens left.  Cypher, you crack me up!  Tin cans!!!

I wasn't counting soy sauce. OMG no way would I give up sushi and Chinese food!

  • The jury is still out on flax, as of now, it's my understanding that the benefits far outweigh the risks. I specifically asked my onc about it in regards to tamoxifen and was told it was fine. My cancer center is actually doing a flax study right now, so I will be interested to see what comes if it! As far as soy, I was told 3 servings of whole soy products a week was fine, so edamame, soy milk, tofu, those kind of things, but I was also told to stay away from soy protein isolate (which is found in a lot of protein bars/drinks). What's annoying is that TONS of foods have soybean oil in them, which I do want to stay away from bc it's usually gmo and just a not so awesome oil on general. Boo!

I am happy to hear that soy sauce contains little as far as actual phytoestrogens, because I gots to have my sushi! ;)

cool, thanks for that info on soy sauce (gotta have something to mix with wasabi!) and also good news on flax. i was concerned, am glad it's beneficial!

My onc'a opinion was No Soy at all unless it was fermented. My question had been about soy sauce and she told me that was fermented so ok.  She told me to start reading labels and avoid if I read soy anything.

Will ask about flax seed next time.

I have never been to an endocrinologist but after listening to you guys it makes sense, have started looking for one in Miami area.

    Have a great day

I picked up a rice protein at the health store no milk so soy free, dairy free& sugar free& just seems I mixed it with water& tasted horrible!! Then I tried mixing it with Almond milk got a little better but makes my stomach nausea! What do you do so it takes better? Any The health store suggests not to really take no supplements like mushrooms or anything until after treatments! What do you ladies take like vitamins& minerals wise?I feel like they wanna tell you weird things too! She told me at told that mushrooms help kill cancer cells& also showed me Cell food drop supplements to oxgenate your cells? What do you all think? I just dont know what to believe then gave me the alkaline vs acid ph charts...Im going nuts

during treatments, goutlaw, they told me dont take anything! just whatever you felt you could eat, plus lots of water. when you are done, just good plain, unprocessed food, as much as you want! do you have a trader joes near you? if you are looking for extra protein, keffir pomegranate is sooo yummy, and you can mix your rice protein powder in it! there are other flavors, too, you can get it from other stores, but is cheaper at tj's. it is tangy and will mask the flavor of your stuff. its like a drinkable yogurt, and you might get quickly addicted to it! basically, onc and endocrinologist told me, a basic one a day vitamin, and vitaminD3 is all anyone really needs. i hope this helps, to start.
