So...whats for dinner?

lacey - yay for DS2 & DDIL! And you and your DH! Agree, paella looks fab!
Dinner tonight was reverse sear sirloins, white quinoa topped with sautéed yellow pepper, scallion and julienned carrot. Breakfast was a vegan protein shake with strawberries and blueberries, and a snack of hummus, rice chips, carrots and celery after a 6 mile walk. Feeling virtuous, but it prob won't last, lol! Heading for Hawaii on the 19th and bathing suit wearing is calling for desperate measures!
eric - our dog was doing what your dogs were last night - but we got some gunfire along with our fireworks - it is Florida after all...
Happy New Year to all my kitchen peeps!!! May 2019 bring only good things for all!

oh that all sounds great! We had our big group dinner on Saturday. Brunch with ham, sausage, bagels, waffles, hardboiled eggs, corn, rolls, apple pie, and, of course, my Christmas Wreath. Nothing fancy, but good.
New Years Eve, we did chili. Yeah, it was cold and wet, and turned to ice so we just snuggled up in the house. New Years day, leftover ham, green bean casserole, and a warm brie round in pastry that had to be eaten, cause I forgot to put it out. Topped it with 3 berry sauce I made from leftover fruit. LOL. Still have some ham left, but not too much. Using the bone to make bean soup, probably tomorrow, or the day after. Gotta make room in freezer first. LOL.
Hope 2019 is good to everyone. Happy New Year!
Much love

Just in case you didnt know what I was talking about. My Chrismas Wreath. Think Rice Crispie bars but in green with corn flakes. Always a big hit.

Moon - how is your DH doing?
Special - oh I am jealous about Hawaii. Never mind what island, I still want to hide in your luggage. I was hoping I would get there in November, but it didn't happen. Now my young friends who have lived there 13 years are pulling up stakes and moving to Panama.
Yes we have indiscriminate firing of guns in Texas too. Absolutely scary. When did the tradition of fireworks on NY Eve start anyway? When I was a kid it was only on 4th of July. Or maybe it was always regional and has expanded?
As I posted on the de-cluttering thread, I cleaned out the cabinet that holds spices on NY Eve. I made hard boiled eggs & paprika was from 2007. I'm not one to toss things just because of a 'best by' date, but an opened spice for 11 years was probably ready to go. I no longer cook the same way I used to - either the type of dishes or quantity, so quite a few things got tossed. Nice to start the NY knowing what I have.

Oddly enough, considering that I live in Arizona, I didn't hear any gunfire last night...just fireworks..
Perhaps stupid people are getting smarter, but the pessimist in me says that is unlikely. So, maybe it just wasn't around here.

Hmmmm, Minus, glad you mentioned the decluttering thread....I must find it! I seriously am feeling ready to tackle this “filled to the brim” house.
Another envier of your Hawaii trip here, Special! And I know the bathing suit panic about which you speak! I am just heading to LA in a month and dread putting on shorts. Maybe it will be unseasonably cool there. Ha! Our trip is to visit my brother (a year older than I) who, sadly, is suffering/failing with Lewy Body Dementia. It is awful to see this former fit Marine and FBI agent, who headed up security for a major hospital in his retirement, failing pretty rapidly. I wasn’t even aware of this devastating disease before. So, really, what I wear in LA will be the least of my concerns once there. But it’s easier to obsess about that than what we will see once there.
We never heard NYE fireworks here, (too busy eating pizza and watching Celtics game;); but saw on our town Facebook page that some folks’ dogs reacted to the loud banging noises so they were somewhere. I agree that such loud local town extravagances are unnecessary to start the new year. I’m sure that there were loud bursts of noise, if not sparkly color, in our lake neighborhood. Once the fireworks start there on July 4th, the noise continues every late night for weeks. Our poor pooch suffered so.... I never even thought about it being gun shots, which it could well be up there. My mindset is sooooo Massachusetts! LOL
BTW...I promise not to post any more paella pix....just couldn't resist this last one since I thought it was the most colorful so fa.
We are talking about having a beef braciole feast for our next Christmas dinner. I love it!Tonight I’ll be sautéing chicken with lots of veggies to pair with farro and a salad. Back to our boring meals...

My mom had a form of Lewy Body dementia....it was truly, absolutely, completely horrible.

Tonight was seared chicken in a spinach and mushroom cream sauce over whole wheat bow ties with broccoli & cauliflower and a Cesar salad.

lacey - you shouldn't need to wear shorts in Los Angeles at this time of year - it will be cooler than you think, prob in the 60's-70's, then dropping at night. I am sorry about your brother, it has to be hard. I lost my brother about 18 months before I was diagnosed, he also had cancer, but a rare one - bile duct. Lewy Body Dementia was what Robin Williams was diagnosed with, before that I had not heard of it - it does sound terrible. eric, I am sorry that your mom, and your family, had to deal with it as well.
Dinner tonight was shrimp, red peppers, onion, julienned carrot, in a teriyaki type of sauce over brown rice. Not exciting, but it did the job, lol!

We went out for Italian tonight (neighborhood joint specializing in Barese/Pugliese, but mostly pan-southern-Italian). App was tomato foccaccia and baked clams (childhood comfort food). Then Caesar salad. Bob had farfalle (bow-tie pasta) with seared sea scallops in lemon-zest cream sauce. I had cozze (mussels) over linguine in classic white wine-garlic sauce. Yes, loads of leftovers!

Wow, Sandy.... you had wide ranging tastes in food even as a child! My childhood comfort food was a grilled cheese sandwich and green jello.
Tonight I’m making a chicken stir fry served over rice. Easy to make, and easy to serve in stages since my husband and I have totally different schedules tonight.

Been craving cheeseburgers, so DH ground some brisket and we wrapped them in lettuce. We’re stuffed but feel good about not hitting a drive thru. We don’t do New Years resolutions but have been using the daily dozen app as a guide to getting more veggies in and it’s been awesome 😀

Breakfast & dinner were the leftover scallops over farfalle; lunch was a leftover Caesar to which I added more lettuce (red leaf & romaine) and half of a purple "Kumato" tomato. Not sure about what to do for dessert...if anything. Maybe some tangerines, or bake an apple. Getting awfully bored with Christmas cookies & mini-baklava, and trying to steer clear of all the chocolate candy.

Tonight is meatloaf, mashed potatoes and steamed veggies

I'm headed out to meet my ex-DH for lunch & Christmas gift exchange. His wife decided not to join us this year. Perry's for steak & all the trimmings. (it's like Morton's or Ruths Chris or Capital Grille but mostly local).

Last night's dinner was a pizza from the extra sourdough crust I made awhile back.
After the oven cooled down...when I took the stone from the oven, about 1/3 of the stone stayed put. :-(
Sharon wants to go to the store to get another pizza stone, so I guess yesterday's pizza turned out well.

Hmmm, Eric, I’ve never made, nor had, pizza with sour dough crust. Is it just more tangy? Sounds interesting! Sorry to hear about the pizza stone. I guess they can be a bit fragile given the high heat environment. I had one that I thought picked up a smell of old oil, so disposed of it, and never replaced it. How does one avoid that?
For the past two nights we’ve had that chicken vegetable toss with some rosemary powder and balsamic vinegar, along with farro and a cuke salad with horseradish dressing. Tonight we’re headed to the Celtics/Mavs game (poor Cs have their three best players on injured list, but am eager to see the new Mavs’ phenom, 19 year old, Luca Doncic, play) so, for dinner, I will likely have salmon in one of our three fave restaurants near there...translation, wherever we can get in!
Last two nights’ dinner inour house:

Mine wasn't old enough to get a stale oil smell....and I have no idea about what to do about it.
The taste seems to vary a bit depending on how recently the starter has been fed. The first batch of dough was made from a starter that was going to be fed (I saved what I poured out of the starter's home to make room for 'a feeding') and it was noticeably sourdough. The 2nd batch of dough was made with recently fed sourdough and it was essentially normal tasting.
I bought a new pizza stone today. Hopefully it will last longer than the first one.
Tonight I'm going to make a pumpkin soup from the pumpkin that was left over from my pie making.

Eric, what happened? Did the stone break in two as you tried to retrieve the pizza from the oven? Did part of the pizza stick to it? Yuck either way. Hope the new one's better.
Half a BLT for breakfast (mostly "L&T") and leftover linguine for late lunch. Removed and refrigerated the mussels, since reheating would have turned them rubbery. So I will toss them with oil & vinegar and put them in a salad. Bob's coming home for dinner, so we'll drive to Cellars to pick up the wine we bought last month and satisfy my craving for great fish & chips. (If they're out of it, I'll have a dinner-sized portion of the seared ahi app instead).

minus, I love Perry’s, the pork chop is so good!
Lacey, that looks delicious!
Tonight was spaghetti squash with rosemary garlic bread and a side salad.

Tonight was gluten free spaghetti with tomato meat sauce and a green salad -- nothing very exciting as we have a guest who cannot have dairy products, so there went the plans for pizza with cheese! The last of a bottle of aglianico went well with the pasta.

I was being really careful with it.....don't bang it, don't drop it, let the oven heat up and cool down with the stone in it. After the last time it cooled to room temperature, I went to take the stone out of the oven and part of it stayed in the oven. It cleaved in a curve that reminded me of the yin-yang 'symbol'.
I got the thing off of the "final clearance" sale table for something like $5 and it wasn't in any packaging, so someone may have banged it around before I got it....I looked for chips and cracks and didn't see any, but that doesn't mean one wasn't hidden inside the stone.
Illimae, what is in the squash filling? The pumpkin soup was good. The recipe is here. I was going to use a different recipe, but I didn't have all the stuff to make it, so I went looking for one that could be filled from the pantry. I didn't have "lite" coconut milk, so I used the "regular" canned coconut milk and I used my left over roasted pumpkin (I measured one time and a 15 (weight) ounce can of pumpkin is about 15 liquid.ounces).
It is kind of pretty in the bowl, and I think it would make a nice soup course for a "fancy meal", but I would need to remember that it's VERY filling.
I agree with Special about LA's winter weather being too cold for shorts.
Tomorrow, Sharon and I are going on this almost 10 mile hike. We walked the same route a couple of weeks ago and the last three months of rains have filled all the little "catchments" and brought out the wildflowers. There were places where the whole hillside was a beautiful yellow with rose, purple and blue colored "dots" of other flowers. And, since it rained just a few days ago, it will likely be even more "flowery and watery".

Went to Cellars. Shared app of "tacos gringos:" carne asada tacos with salsa, guac, crema, in a crispy shell cradled in a flour tortilla shell. Entree was fish & chips, with slaw. Yup, lots of leftovers (incl. part of Bob's seared ahi Niçoise). Tomorrow's dinner will be leftovers--not just those but mussels (marinated and atop a salad) and linguine. Unless, of course, Bob works so late that he'll get home too late for dinner. Sunday morning we're headed to 900 N. Mich. so he can get a haircut with his favorite barber; then investigate the new food court. Probably get some Donut Vault donuts to go, and have lunch down the street at Hugo's Frog Bar (seafood).

Illimae - we both had the lunch filet, but we did treat ourselves to fried deep asparagus with lump crab meat as a side. I probably only eat steak every 2 or three months, so it was a treat.
Eric - looked up your hike. That sounds like a great day. I miss the desert.
Did you know that Barry Goldwater was a professional photographer even more than a politician? I had no idea. His goal was to document the state that he loved and the history of that state. His favorite subjects were the ancient cultures of Arizona and the state's unparalleled landscapes. He was a member of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain and a friend of Ansel Adams. He was a frequent contributor to Arizona Highways and sold his first photograph to them in 1939. He preferred black & white, but would shoot in color if requested.
There is a fairly new museum in Scottsdale that has a premier showing of some of his photographs - The Arizona Highway Collection. The museum is Scottsdale's Museum of the West, a Smithsonian affiliate. The exhibit is in the Heritage Hall Gallery from January 6 - June 23, 2019

Eric, the spaghetti squash was topped with spaghetti sauce and Parmesan cheese. Pretty easy meal and I already had leftover sauce from a previous pasta night.

Thanks Illimae. I'm always interested in "easy". :-)
Thanks Minus. I didn't know about the museum's upcoming exhibit. It is about a 45 minute drive from home..I would very much like to see that.
Arizona Highways, over the years, has published quite a few of Barry Goldwater's photographs.
I found out about Barry Goldwater's photography around 1980 via ham radio. I'm a ham radio operator, as was Barry Goldwater. A college classmate that grew up near Goldwater's house was also a ham and known him for probably 10 years. I got invited along one time to go visit and it was literally "drive up, ring the doorbell, get introduced and we get invited in".
I'm sure security concerns would make it impossible to do this now.
Anyway, after greeting us, we walked back to see the ham radio station and along the way, I noticed all the photographs......and that's how I found out about his photography skills.0 -
I'm only on pg 521 (from my mobile view on reading all of these posts - fantastic recipes for those that have shared them, many I've copied and pasted to my cloud to try later). Wanted to join and post my meal today. Had Taxol #2 at 8am Friday (my phone keeps autocorrect Taxol to taco).... Soup was made on Thursday while I was teleworking.
Had some of the 'kitchen sink soup' around 2p Fri after tx, was fantastic. Leftover frozen Thanksgiving turkey plus whatever veggies I had around the house that were 'past their prime' or just sounded like they would work well. I used parsnips, mushrooms, carrots, garlic, cherry tomatoes (added last 30 min so they kept their form), potatoes, celery, onion and white beans. Simmered in chicken stock with garlic powder, oregano, black pepper, basil, tumeric, a bit of sea salt, ground sage, cumin and the celery leaves chopped up. Simmered for about 4 hrs then added the tomatoes.
I'll eat on this for the next few days. Haven't done the lasagna yet, tho everything is prepped for it (herbed ricotta, cream cheese and cottage cheese; seasoned ground beef, pork and veal; store bought sauce but added seasoned stewed tomatoes and doctored further w more herbs and snuck in some wilted but sauteed kale - I don't think my husband will notice the kale). Hubs was apprehensive about putting it all together on his own so he had a soft pretzels and Christmas cookies for dinner while I was sleeping off the benadryl. I'll assemble and put this in the oven tomorrow for his dinner. I will still be eating soup most likely. My belly doesn't handle cheese well on chemo....
Eat well, be well. MB1

Welcome, MaddieBrie1! That soup sounds delicious. I make a lot of soup in the winter.

tonight was soup (11 bean and ham) & salad (standard garden with balsamic vinaigrette).

Tonight was turkey burgers, oven fries and oven roasted green beans to minimize the cooking utensils needed as a water main down the road from us broke today and, while we do have water the pressure is way low. Not washing dishes until it improves or we become desperate enough to heat some of the water we saved in various and sundry .bowls and pots...
