So...whats for dinner?

Lol Debbie on the 'tag'.. I'm still here reading all the posts when I can but we're into a combination of end of semester drama with the kids and holiday festivities for us... I really do prefer the latter....lol!!
Your Bloody Mary mix sounds really good and different (and how did I know there would be peppadews involved?.... Lol). Do you have a recipe or some proportions of ingredients that you could share? Would love a good mix for the holidays....
Laurie,
Glad that you all were feeling well enough to celebrate your son's birthday as you had planned! Don't sweat the camera thing... Been there where we either forgot it or brought it and it malfunctioned, much to our horror.... The memories are sweet none the less!
Lol Bedo.... Sounds like 1970 was an interesting year! I think we all have a few events from the past that we'd prefer to have behind us but... they are a part of what made us who we are today....0 -
Laurie- Sorry some of the stuff didn't work out but sounds like the kids enjoyed it anyway hope you all feel better.
Michelle- Did you ever find out why they called it "marshmellow"?
Seaside- Haha!- I didn't really measure but I took 2 large cans of V-8 juice and dumped them in a bowl put 2 large jars of straight horsradish in, along with a lot of worcheshire sauce maybe about 1/4 cup maybe a little more. Jucie of a whole lemon, about 1 tablespoon or more of celery salt, S&P (I put a lot of pepper in) and hot sauce I used franks hot sauce but think tabasco would be good too. I taste it until I have enough hot sauce in there. Then I poured it into a empty gallon water jug. when I serve them I dip the glass rim with water (or vodka) then dip into some Kosher salt mixed with a little celery salt. Then put all your garnish in. (shake the Jug before pouring so you get it all mixed in) Here is another one I do for christmas it is so so good if you like sweet but so yummy it is my homemade hot buttered rum.
1 QT OF FRENCH VANILLA ICE CREAM (SOFTENED)
1 LB OF BUTTER (SOFTENED)
1 LB OF BROWN SUGAR
1 LB POWDERED SUGAR
2 TSP OF CINNAMON
2 TSP OF NUTMEG
RUM (OPTIONAL)
FRESH WHIPPING CREAM OR TOPPING FOR THE TOP OF THE MUG
IN A LARGE BOWL, MIX ALL OF THE INGREDIENTS TOGETHER WITH A BEATER, UNTIL ALL IS BLENDED WELL, PUT IN A LARGE CONTAINER WITH LID THAT WILL FIT IN THE FREEZER- THIS WILL KEEP FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS- WHEN READY TO USE, IN A LARGE COFFEE MUG, PUT AN OUNCE OF RUM IF USING, IN THE CUP. THEN SCOOP OUT A FEW Tablespoons OF THE ICE CREAM MIXTURE THEN PUT HOT BOILING WATER IN CUP, STIR TO MIX REAL WELL, TASTE FOR MORE ICE CREAM MIXTURE IF NEEDED add rum is using (good alone for children) THEN TOP WITH SOME FRESH WHIPPED CREAM AND NUTMEG-

Looks like the holiday season is in full swing with all these parties and recipies! Wish I could contribute, but this year I've been a real scrooge. My tree has been up so long I've almost forgotten it's there...LOL! I still have to do my gift bags...don't know what I'm waiting for. I just don't seem to have the spirit this year and I should.
Yesterday was my one year anniversary cancer free. I should celebrate! I have a girlfriend coming on Wednesday to stay for a few days, so maybe we'll do something. I have a big boat parade party coming up this weekend that should be fun!
Yesterday was DGS's 10th birthday party. It wasn't the usual big bash that his Dad always throws for him....just a nice kids party in the back yard of DD's home with a few of his friends...exactly what a 10 year old should have, with pizza and cupcakes.
Have a great day everyone!

Debbie - that hot buttered rum recipe sounds like a heart attack in a cup...LOL!
So the marshmallow came into play last evening in a couple of ways - they had "mini" marshmallows for the hot chocolate and they had a marshmallow shooter contest for the kids. I think they could have been more creative. They served typical snacks - packaged cookies, veggies and dip, chips, crackers, etc. Where were the rice krispy treats or marshmallow Santas??? A bit lacking in imagination, but they had a good turnout and they filled a mini-cooper with toys for tots, so it was a good thing.
Congratulations, Kaara! You should most definitely celebrate!

YAY congrats Kaara! Enjoy your friends visit. Is it harder to get into the spirit in a warmer climate? We are supposed to get a little snow tomorrow that should inspire us here.
Laurie Wine in the room with your DH and the kids asleep...priceless. sounds like the perfect weekend, where everyone was happy. Happy family= Happy mom.
Craving some chicken french, but I forgot to buy some lemons...may have to do a road trip.

Kaara, These anniversaries are hard on us I think. As you say you "should" be celebrating, but obviously that isn't what your heart wants to do. Anytime a statement includes "should" and any emotion, bag it. You feel what you feel; and whatever you feel you just have to go with.

Sorry couldnt get this pic smaller. this is my daughter "the horse wisperer" picking out the perfect horse for our carriage ride through central park.

Kaara, congrats on your anniversary! I'm having difficulty getting into the swing of things too. I find myself wishing it was January already (I don't know why, I HATE January).

Carrie, what a pretty daughter! At first, however, I didn't have the full pic in the screen and I kept just seeing the horse and the pole, wondering what your message meant! LOL
Really makes me hanker for NYC....tho maybe not on this rainy day.
DH had to cancel his cataract surgery this AM since his virus is worse today....spent much of the night aching and coughing...and I spent all of it listening. We may soon be making our own manvirus video! He so rarely gets sick, I think fortunate people like that just don't have enough "experience" with managing feeling crappy! I just sent him off to try to nap, while I get the chicken soup going..... And I'm intensely promoting coughing into one's inner elbow to keep those germs from spreading all over the house. Pre- schoolers are experts at that.
Congrats Kaara.....

Oh dear, I have no idea why that urban jogger piece showed up on my post....sent it to DS2 last night and it seemed to infiltrate here. Sorry.....

Great picture, Carrie! I think your daughter resembles you
Lacey - sorry to hear DH had to cancel his surgery, I'm sure that's disappointing. I hope he is feeling better very soon. I still have a little cough and stuffiness from my sinus infection - this thing doesn't want to leave me alone!!!
The kids are coming over to watch the Patriots game tonight and I am making chili and hot wings. I hope I can eat the wings - I like them but spicy food has been a no-no for months. I figure I've got one shot before I go back on chemo.

Congrats Kaara. I have been in a funk too. Things will get better ;-)))
Michelle- Yes, you are right the hot buttered rum is Very rick that is why I only have it during christmas lol!
Carriie- Your daughter looks very pretty!
Going to a Christmas party tonight and have no Idea what I'm wearing not even sure my stuff fits me anymore "sigh"

For those of you who might be looking for some appetizers for the holidays, this is a nice little list:

Chicken enchilladas with tomatillo sauce and some black beans. Such a simple meal, and so very good. The carcass is turning into stock and will hang in the oven all night. I suspect lunch tomorrow will be a simple chicken noodle soup. One of my favorites.

Tortilla and lime crusted tilapia, mac and cheese ramekins, sauteed spinach and garlic. A fancy dessert of chocolate graham crackers and milk

Auntienance thanks for that link I looked up the buttered rum popcorn with cranberries, think I will try it. Your meal sounds great esp the tilapia. funny on the dessert...love the simple stuff cause who needs a big dessert when you have such a spectacular meal. I have a bit of a cold with sore throat, so really wanted something cool, so got out the instant pudding and wham! in 10 minutes we had a nice light cool dessert with whipped topping.

Susan and Auntie, both your meals sound good.
Lunch yesterday was mediocre Chinese at a nice restaurant. Or the building and gardens are nice, anyway. The hot tea was delicious. The meal came piled onto a luncheon plate and wasn't hot. A LOT of fried rice. I ate about 1/4 of it.
Dinner last night was the last of the beef veggie noodle soup, very tired at this point! Glad to see it go. Also triscuits spread with butter and home-made iced tea.
Dinner tonight will be chicken sausage gumbo ladled over brown rice and a salad.
A promised front came through and it's actually cold enough to wear jeans today! Yay!

Carrie, I'm going to make the popcorn too. It sounded good and looks festive.
Carole, the gumbo sounds wonderful. I'm going to have to make some soon too.
I think dinner tonight will be grilled hamburgers and a few (very few) oven fried potatoes.
The sun is finally shining today, yay! It's been damp and gloomy the past four days. Enough already.
Tomorrow we are going to the city (St. Louis) to do some shopping and spend the night at a new casino. Maybe 12-12-12 will end up being lucky.
Is tomorrow the end of the world or is it the 21st? I forget.0 -
Nancy - have fun at the new casino!
Ladies - I'd like to send out some holiday cards but I need your addresses. Please PM me your mailing addresses so I can send you some holiday cheer!

Nance, your last line is hilarious!! I totally broke out into laughs...for a variety of reasons!
Today is little DGS's second birthday.....the little guy who has the hairstylist (she was the person in the pic Michelle posted for me). It feels like he should be turning four with all the activity and learning he's packed into that time. His family is moving to their new home today...I guess so they will remember the date?
Last night we had baked salmon topped with sliced garlic, salad, brussels sprouts, and a side of leftover wheat pasta with broccoli rabe, butternut squash and walnuts.
Susan, are/ were you a trained chef? Your food is so authentic.....
Does anyone watch Treme? I love the chef sequences in that series.0 -
Lacey, I love Treme, for the food AND the music.
As it turns out, it doesn't matter which day it ends, I'll be in a casino both days with some of my most favorite friends and family. Not a bad way to go I guess lol!0 -
Nance, sounds wonderful for you!! Enjoy to the fullest!
Our DS2 turned us on to Treme and we are so hooked....almost totally caught up which presents the problem of having to wait a week to see a new episode. I do not even know how far they are into season three which we just started.
Just cleared out a few cabinet shelves to see what I have for cookie baking. OMG! The age of some of the items is embarrassing...I think they are as old as the "new" kitchen cabinets. So it is good that I am now home and can pay better attention to using/moving my inventory! Very good news that there was not an "unwanted item" in any of the areas....and with such tasty items ....I had been a bit afraid to tackle that cabinet...but all is well. Off to the store to get some fresh cookie baking ingredients.0 -
LOL Nancy, sounds perfect to me!!! I must admit I miss being 20 minutes from a casino. My bank account, however, is very relieved

Lacey, season 3 ended 2 weeks ago. The good news is, it was renewed next year for one final season at the last minute. Rumor was that it was going to be canceled.
0 -
Carrie, what a beautiful daughter you have!
Laurie, I think that the boys will always remember their wonderful day anyway. I'm so glad they enjoyed it! I can just picture the excitement!
Susan, congratulates on DH's 60th. What do you get at 60? Not SS.... I know, wisdom and a sense of acomplishment and not caring what anybody thinks anymore!
Wow, auntienance that dinner sounds good.
In fact everyones does.
I have the day off tomorrow, I asked for it. I will see my financial planner and get my hair done. I want 6 months off from work in a year. I hope he can help me. I want to live in Cuenca, Ecuador. Will my job allow it? manybe.. a big maybe. Do I speak Spanish?? No. But that's why I want to go. We'll see gotta dream..
Oh, for dinner, more fish, peas and boxed mashed potatoes. Sorry, bought them when I had oral surgery and have to use them up now or never.

Thanks Bedo...I laugh everytime I see that pic cause she made the three of us wait on the curb while she picked out the perfect horse and then we had to wait till he finished eating before we could go. Tells me she is going to go back and visit him once in awhile. i guess she misses some things from home here in the country. Way to go putting your dreams into reality!
Auntienance Kinda sounds like the end of the world is a sale that you dont want to miss..lol. Hope its not tomorrow...I have too much to do!
Tonight will be open faced hot meatball subs.. they had a 2fer on pre-cooked meatballs at the store.

Strangely, at least to me, Jacques Pepin LOVES boxed potatoes and uses them freely to thicken soups. For that reason, I always have some on the shelf. They are also a perfect ingredient for making potato bread. You could also use the dried potatoes as a breading for the fish. I love fish wrapped in thin slices of potato, so why wouldn't this work?
Tonight a few chops from Lamb No 2 will find their way to the grill. The potato Dauphinois is in the oven. Will also serve a salad with a light vinagrette and goat cheese. The goat cheese is in the freezer, I will dip into the leftover egg wash and then some herbs and breadcrumbs to lightly fry before placing on the salad. Fell in love with this in France. Never make it since I hate to waste a whole egg, but I baked the rest of the brioche dough today so I have leftover egg!

Had a Rachel Ray recipe, "Ricky Chicky", which was basically a stir fry with chicken, scallions, peas (I subbed carrots, julienned) in a honey, lime, bitters sauce. It was quite tasty, and I enjoyed straying from the usual soy sauces with stir fry. Instead of rice we had quinoa, and a salad of arugula with balsamic dressing.
Lord! I just heard on MSNBC of a mass shooting in a mall in Portland Oregon. That topped the guy who shot a man in the back of his head today in Columbus Circle, NYC. It is so disturbing to turn on the news and hear about pedophiles, testosterone-laden murderers, parents abusing their babies, etc., etc. I was glad to see a piece on swimming babies, and a generous eight year old tonight....give me the soft stuff, P-L-E-A-S-E !0 -
Before I retired, I rarely watched the news. It was too much like work. I was a prison warden.
